Choose the mutual fund before you choose the SIP. A SIP only automates periodic purchases; it does not make a scheme suitable, reduce market risk, or guarantee returns. Start with your goal and time horizon, match them to the scheme’s category and portfolio exposure, then check the current Riskometer, plan-specific total expense ratio (TER), exit-load rules, and whether a direct or regular plan fits the help you need.
What a SIP does—and what it does not do
A systematic investment plan (SIP) is a facility for investing a chosen amount in a mutual-fund scheme at regular intervals. It describes the investment schedule, not the quality of the underlying scheme. The same SIP format can be used with schemes holding very different assets, risks, objectives, costs and exit rules.

- It does: automate recurring purchases according to the frequency and amount you select.
- It does not: select a fund for you, remove losses, make an unsuitable category appropriate, or guarantee a return.
Every instalment buys units at the scheme’s applicable net asset value (NAV). When markets fall, the same contribution generally buys more units; when markets rise, it buys fewer. That purchase pattern is a feature of regular investing, not evidence that the scheme itself is low-risk or suitable for every goal.
The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) investor-education material both place the responsibility for assessing the scheme, its risks and its costs on the investor. There is no evidence-based list of one universally suitable SIP fund.

Begin with the goal, deadline and loss you can tolerate
Define the amount and the date
Write down what the money is for, how much you expect to need and when you will need it. A retirement contribution with a long, flexible horizon is a different decision from money earmarked for a near-term fee, house deposit or planned purchase. The closer and less negotiable the deadline, the less room you have for a market decline immediately before withdrawal.
Do not start by searching for the highest recent SIP return. First establish the job the money must perform. A scheme’s stated objective and portfolio exposure should be compatible with that job, and the category should be one you can hold through its normal fluctuations.
Set a loss boundary before you invest
Ask how much temporary loss you could withstand without stopping the SIP or selling in panic. This is separate from your willingness to accept a high number on a risk questionnaire. If a fall would make you abandon the plan, a more volatile category may be a poor fit even when the deadline is distant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Record the goal and target date.
- Identify whether the date is fixed or flexible.
- Estimate the largest short-term decline you could tolerate while continuing the plan.
- Keep money needed for immediate spending outside a market-linked SIP.
Match the scheme category and portfolio to the goal
Read the objective, not just the label
Open the scheme’s current information and read its stated investment objective. Then inspect what it actually holds: the types of securities, concentration, geographic exposure, credit quality, interest-rate sensitivity or equity exposure described in the portfolio. Two schemes that both accept SIP instalments may serve entirely different purposes.
A category name is a starting point for comparison, not a substitute for reading the portfolio. Compare schemes only when their objectives and underlying exposure are sufficiently alike. A short-term return table can otherwise place unlike schemes beside each other and create a misleading winner.
Check whether the portfolio risk matches the deadline
Consider how the assets could behave over the period you have available. A scheme with substantial exposure to volatile assets may experience a large decline over a short interval. A scheme with interest-rate or credit exposure has different drivers and risks. The relevant question is not whether a category has recently performed well, but whether its possible outcomes are acceptable for your goal and time horizon.

Use the scheme documents and current portfolio disclosure to understand what you would own through the SIP. If you cannot explain the main sources of risk in plain language, pause the selection rather than relying on the SIP label.
Use the Riskometer as a screening tool, not a promise
SEBI describes the Riskometer as a visual indication of a mutual-fund scheme’s risk. It helps you compare the risk level assigned to a particular scheme with your own ability to tolerate losses. The displayed level is scheme-specific and can change, so check the current disclosure before investing and when reviewing the scheme later.
The Riskometer does not predict a return, cap a loss or make a fund safe. Read it alongside the portfolio and objective:
- Identify the current Riskometer level shown for the exact scheme and plan.
- Find the assets and exposures that drive that level.
- Ask whether a decline caused by those exposures would be tolerable before your goal date.
- Recheck the indicator if the scheme’s portfolio, classification or disclosure changes.
Choosing a lower displayed risk level is not automatically correct. A lower-risk scheme can still be unsuitable if it cannot reasonably serve the goal, while a higher-risk scheme can be inappropriate if a loss would force an early exit.
Understand TER and the cost of your exact plan
What TER means
The total expense ratio (TER) is the aggregate operating cost of running and managing a scheme, expressed as a percentage of average NAV. These expenses are reflected in the NAV, reducing the return that remains for investors. The relevant figure is the current TER for the exact scheme and plan you intend to buy, not a number copied from an old article or a different plan.
AMFI says current scheme TER disclosures are available daily on asset-management-company (AMC) websites and on AMFI’s website. Check the disclosure immediately before investing and verify it again when comparing alternatives, because costs can change.

Why a small percentage matters
SEBI Investor uses a simplified hypothetical illustration: a ₹1,00,000 investment earning 10% before expenses would show an illustrated effective return of 8.5% with a 1.5% expense ratio and 9.5% with a 0.5% expense ratio.
| Item in SEBI Investor’s illustration | Illustrated value |
|---|---|
| Initial investment | ₹1,00,000 |
| Return before expenses | 10% |
| Expense ratio example A | 1.5% |
| Illustrated effective return with example A | 8.5% |
| Expense ratio example B | 0.5% |
| Illustrated effective return with example B | 9.5% |
Those figures are a teaching example, not measured performance, a current quotation, a forecast or a promise about any fund. A lower TER is a relevant comparison, but it is not a complete selection rule: category, portfolio, risk, service and exit terms still matter.
Choose between direct and regular plans
What is common and what differs
Direct and regular plans of the same scheme share the portfolio and fund manager, but they use different distribution routes and therefore have different expense ratios.

| Distribution route | Invests without a distributor or agent | Uses an intermediary or distributor |
| Expense ratio | Generally lower because distributor intermediation is omitted | Includes costs associated with the distribution route |
| Research and execution | Investor identifies, selects and transacts independently | Investor receives distributor-assisted selection or transaction support, subject to that service’s scope |
| Portfolio and fund manager within the same scheme | Shared with the corresponding regular plan | Shared with the corresponding direct plan |
AMFI describes direct plans as for people who prefer to invest directly without a distributor or agent. The lower expense ratio is a cost advantage only if you can make and maintain the decisions yourself. A regular plan may suit someone who values assistance with shortlisting, paperwork or transactions and accepts the associated cost. This is a service-and-cost choice, not a universal verdict that one route is right for every investor.
Questions to answer before selecting the route
- Can you identify a suitable category and read the scheme documents without relying on a sales pitch?
- Will you complete purchases, redemptions, nominee details and account changes accurately?
- Can you monitor current TER, risk information and exit terms yourself?
- Would an intermediary’s ongoing assistance help you stay invested and avoid impulsive changes?
If you choose a regular plan, understand what service the intermediary actually provides and how the cost is represented in the plan’s expenses. If you choose direct, accept that the research and execution work remains yours.
Check exit-load rules before starting the SIP
An exit load is a charge that may apply when units are redeemed within a scheme-defined period. The schedule differs across schemes and can depend on how long the units have been held. A generic percentage or holding period cannot be applied to every mutual fund.

- How the charge is calculated and which units are affected when you redeem part of the investment.

Do not assume that a SIP creates one single holding period. Each instalment may have its own purchase date, so a redemption can involve units acquired at different times. Use the scheme’s current rule and transaction records when planning a withdrawal.
Compare performance only among genuinely comparable schemes
Performance can inform a decision after you have established category, objective, portfolio and risk fit. Compare schemes with similar mandates and exposures, and use periods that match the decision you are making. A return ranking over an arbitrary short interval can reward a temporary market exposure rather than a durable fit.
SEBI Investor’s education index explicitly asks how to compare the performance of two schemes, but the material available here does not establish one universally correct evaluation window, benchmark method or selection threshold. That means you should document the comparison method instead of treating one headline number as decisive.
- Compare like with like: similar objective, category and portfolio exposure.
- Use more than one period where the information is available, rather than relying on a single recent result.
- Check whether differences came from materially different holdings or risk levels.
- Consider current TER and exit terms alongside returns.
- Do not treat past performance as a guarantee of future returns.
The purpose of performance comparison is to understand how comparable schemes behaved under different conditions, not to chase the latest leader.

- Write the decision brief. Record the goal, target date, contribution amount, flexibility of the deadline and the loss you could tolerate without abandoning the plan.
- Shortlist the relevant category. Use the stated objective and your time horizon to identify schemes whose intended exposure could serve the goal. Exclude schemes whose portfolio risks are incompatible with the deadline.
- Read the scheme objective and portfolio. Confirm what the scheme may hold, the concentration and the principal risks. Do not infer this from the word “SIP” or from a return ranking.
- Record the current Riskometer. Note the level displayed for the exact scheme and understand which underlying assets drive it. Treat it as an input, not a safety guarantee.
- Record the exact plan’s current TER. Retrieve the daily disclosure from the AMC or AMFI and write down whether you are comparing direct plans with direct plans or regular plans with regular plans.
- Read the exit-load schedule. Confirm the holding condition, charge and treatment of units from different instalments using current scheme documents.
- Compare comparable performance. Use a consistent method across schemes with similar objectives and exposures. Keep the comparison in context with risk and cost.
- Select the service route. Choose direct if you can research and execute independently; consider regular if distributor assistance is valuable and you understand the associated cost.
- Verify details immediately before purchase. Recheck the scheme name, plan, option, TER, Riskometer and exit-load disclosure because these details are changeable.
- Set a review trigger. Review when your goal date, ability to tolerate loss, scheme objective, portfolio exposure, costs or risk information changes—not merely because a monthly return is negative.
Worked decision examples
A long, flexible goal
Suppose an investor is building wealth for a goal many years away and can continue contributions through market declines. The investor would still begin by matching the goal to a category and examining the portfolio, then compare risk, current TER and exit rules. A long horizon permits more time for fluctuations to play out; it does not make every high-volatility scheme appropriate.

A fixed date that is approaching
For a goal with a firm date, the investor should focus on whether the scheme’s possible short-term loss could jeopardize the amount needed at that date. The SIP mechanism does not protect the final withdrawal value. Riskometer, portfolio exposure and exit-load conditions deserve particular attention before continuing contributions.
An investor who wants help
Someone who is unsure how to shortlist schemes, complete transactions or stay disciplined may value distributor assistance through a regular plan. The decision should be based on the service required and the plan’s current cost, not on an assumption that regular plans have a different portfolio or manager within the same scheme.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Choosing the SIP before the scheme. Correct it by defining the goal, category and portfolio exposure first.
- Picking the latest top performer. Correct it by comparing only schemes with similar objectives and considering more than one appropriate period.
- Treating the Riskometer as a guarantee. Correct it by studying the assets behind the label and your own loss tolerance.
- Using an outdated TER. Correct it by checking the current daily AMC or AMFI disclosure for the exact plan.
- Assuming every fund has the same exit load. Correct it by reading the current scheme-specific schedule.
- Selecting direct only because its expense ratio is lower. Correct it by checking whether you can research, transact and monitor the investment independently.
- Stopping after a short-term fall. Correct it by revisiting the original goal, horizon and risk capacity, then checking whether the scheme’s objective or exposure has changed.
Checklist before your first instalment
- The goal, amount and target date are written down.
- The scheme category and objective fit that goal.
- The portfolio’s main exposures and risks are understood.
- The current Riskometer has been checked.
- The current TER for the exact direct or regular plan has been recorded.
- The current exit-load schedule has been read.
- Any performance comparison uses genuinely comparable schemes and a consistent method.
- The direct-versus-regular choice reflects the help you need and the work you can do yourself.
- You know what event would cause you to review the investment.
How to review the choice after investing
A review is warranted when the goal or deadline changes, your ability to tolerate loss changes, or the scheme’s objective, portfolio exposure, Riskometer, TER or exit-load terms change. Check the current disclosures rather than relying on the information you used at the first instalment.
A falling NAV by itself does not establish that the scheme has become unsuitable, just as a rising NAV does not prove that it remains suitable. Compare the scheme’s current role with the original decision brief and investigate material changes before altering the SIP.
Bottom line
The right mutual fund for a SIP is the scheme whose objective, portfolio exposure and risk fit your goal and time horizon, at a current cost and exit structure you understand. Use the Riskometer, TER, performance comparisons and plan route as evidence in that decision. The SIP automates contributions; it cannot perform the suitability work for you.
