A device can keep its private key offline while a computer or phone remains online; that protects key exposure but is not automatically an air gap.
For a genuinely air-gapped design, you must be able to create unsigned transaction data away from the signer, transfer that data to the device without an internet connection, review it on the device, sign it there, and transfer the signed result back for broadcast. Verify every step in the current documentation for your model and wallet app before moving funds.

Start with the signing workflow, not the product name
Solana transactions normally involve three separate jobs. A wallet application builds a transaction, a signer authorizes it with the account’s private key, and a connected service submits the signed transaction to the Solana network. A hardware wallet is intended to keep the private key inside the device while the application handles preparation and, often, broadcasting.
That arrangement is often called offline signing because the key is not stored on the internet-connected computer or phone. It is not necessarily air-gapped. If the hardware wallet is connected by USB or Bluetooth while the companion application is online, the key can remain protected, but transaction data still crosses a live connection. The security properties and practical trade-offs differ from a workflow in which the signer never connects to an internet-capable device.

What an air-gapped Solana workflow requires
- An online computer or phone creates an unsigned transaction or signing request.
- The unsigned data reaches the hardware wallet through the method supported by that model, such as a documented QR or removable-media process. Do not assume a particular transfer method is available without checking the device instructions.
- The device displays the relevant transaction information and signs internally after you approve it.
- The signed transaction leaves the device and returns to an online wallet or broadcaster without revealing the private key.
If any step requires entering the recovery phrase into a website, desktop application, browser extension or support chat, stop. A person who obtains that phrase can control the account and its funds.
Define your requirements before comparing devices
“Supports Solana” is not precise enough to make a buying decision. Support depends on the hardware model, firmware, wallet application, connection mode and transaction features. Write down the requirements below before selecting a device.
1. The wallet application you actually use
Decide whether you will use a browser extension, a mobile wallet, a desktop application, a developer integration or a combination. The application must explicitly support your exact hardware model. An account that works with a device in one wallet may not work in another.
Phantom’s support documentation lists selected Ledger models and different connection methods for its mobile application and browser extension. It also states that Ledger Nano Gen5, all Trezor models and all Tangem models are unsupported in Phantom. Those statements describe Phantom’s listed integrations, not a universal judgment about the devices or their ability to sign Solana transactions elsewhere. Integrations can change, so confirm the current support page immediately before setup.
2. The Solana transaction features you need
Basic transfers are only one use case. If you interact with decentralized exchanges, staking, lending, compressed assets or other programs, the wallet and signer must handle the transaction instructions and message format those services produce. Ledger’s Wallet Provider documentation describes signing for Solana legacy and version 0 transactions. That is useful evidence for integrations that use that provider, but it does not prove that every wallet application exposes every Solana feature through every Ledger model.
3. Your connection or transfer model
Choose among a direct connection, a phone-mediated connection or a separately transferred signing request according to your threat model. A direct USB or Bluetooth session can be convenient and still keep the private key inside the device. A QR or file-based process can reduce the signer’s contact with an online system, but only if the wallet supports a complete unsigned-to-signed round trip and you can verify the data on the device.

4. What must be visible before approval
At minimum, you should be able to check the account, destination, amount, fee and the important effects of the transaction on the device’s screen. Ledger describes showing transaction details on the device before approval. That is the manufacturer’s description; clear-signing behavior can vary by model, firmware and wallet integration, and was not independently tested here. If a transaction is represented only by an opaque program payload, treat the approval as higher risk and use a wallet that can decode the relevant details where possible.

5. How the signed result will be broadcast
An air-gapped signer is useful only if the signed transaction can be returned to an online broadcaster without exposing the key. Identify that broadcaster in advance: the same wallet app, a separate watch-only tool or a developer service. Confirm that it accepts the transaction format and signature produced by your device.

How to sign a Solana transaction while keeping the key offline
The exact button names differ by wallet and model, but the security sequence should look like this. Follow the current instructions for your device rather than improvising when a screen differs.
- Initialize the device in a private setting. Buy from an authorized channel, inspect the packaging and device state, and create a new wallet on the device. Let the device generate the recovery phrase. Write it on the supplied durable medium and store it offline in a place protected from theft, fire and unauthorized access. Never photograph or type it into an internet-connected device.
- Record the account and derivation details you will use. The wallet application may ask you to select a Solana account or derivation path. Confirm that the account shown by the app matches the address displayed on the hardware wallet. A mismatch can mean you are viewing a different account, not that the device is broken.
- Install only the required firmware and wallet application. Download software from the manufacturer or wallet developer, verify the application name and update notices, and keep the device firmware current when the wallet requires it. Do not install unofficial browser extensions or enter the recovery phrase to “restore” a hardware wallet in software.
- Connect the device to a compatible wallet. In the wallet’s hardware-wallet or account-connection menu, choose the exact model and approved connection method. For Phantom, check the current model list and whether you are using the mobile app or browser extension, because the supported connection modes differ. For a Keystone setup, verify the current Solflare Extension or Solflare Mobile instructions for your model.
- Prepare the transaction without approving it. Select the correct source account, recipient, token, amount and network. Review fees and any program actions. If you are using an air-gapped workflow, export or display the unsigned signing request using the transfer method documented for the wallet. Keep the hardware wallet disconnected from the internet-capable system until the request is ready.
- Transfer the unsigned data to the signer. Use only the documented QR, cable, memory-card or other method for that device. Compare the session or request identifiers if the software displays them. A QR-based transfer alone does not prove that the process is air-gapped; the complete workflow must also return the signature without exposing the key.
- Read the device screen before approving. Check the sending account, destination address, asset, amount, network fee and the action being authorized. For smart-contract or program interactions, inspect every field the device and wallet make available. If the device shows an address that differs from the intended recipient, reject the request and investigate malware, address substitution or an incorrectly prepared transaction.
- Approve on the hardware wallet. The private key should perform the signature inside the device. You should never see the private key itself. If software asks you to copy or paste a key, recovery phrase or raw secret, cancel the operation.
- Return the signed transaction to the broadcaster. Transfer the signed result back through the documented channel or let the connected wallet receive it. The online application should broadcast the signed transaction; it should not request the private key.
- Confirm final status independently. Check the transaction signature and account activity in a trusted Solana explorer or the wallet’s transaction history. A successful device approval does not guarantee that the network accepted the transaction, especially if the blockhash expired or the transaction failed in a program.
Understand Solana blockhash timing before approving slowly
Solana transactions include a recent blockhash that expires after a limited period. A careful review on the device can take long enough for that blockhash to become stale. Ledger’s developer documentation specifically notes that device review can outlast a Solana recent blockhash in its documented provider flow. That flow uses delayed, two-step signing and refreshes the blockhash after approval.

How to assess each option in practice
Ledger
Ledger is the most clearly documented option in the available material for Solana transaction signing through a provider. Its documentation covers legacy and version 0 transactions, and it describes device-level transaction review before approval. That makes it a candidate when your chosen wallet exposes the features you need.
Do not generalize support from one Ledger model to another. Check the exact model, firmware, wallet application and connection mode. Phantom’s own list is model-specific, and its mobile and browser-extension procedures differ. If your transaction takes a long time to inspect, account for the blockhash-refresh behavior described in the provider documentation.
Keystone with Solflare
Keystone lists Solflare Extension and Solflare Mobile as compatible Solana wallets, while Solflare names Keystone as a hardware-wallet option for offline key storage. This is a documented compatibility path for users who prefer Solflare’s interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompatibility is not the same as a proven air gap. Before funding the account, document how your exact Keystone model receives an unsigned Solana transaction, what it displays, how it signs, and how Solflare receives the signed transaction. Perform a small-value test and confirm that the transaction can be broadcast without entering the recovery phrase anywhere.
Solflare Shield
Solflare and the Solana wallet directory describe Solflare Shield as a Solana-focused hardware wallet or card integrated with the Solflare application. It may appeal to users who want a Solana-specific signing experience rather than a general-purpose hardware wallet.
The available documentation does not establish every current model, availability status or complete air-gapped procedure. Treat the product as a candidate, not as an automatic answer to an air-gap requirement. Confirm the current app, firmware, transaction-review screen and signed-data export path before transferring meaningful funds.

Security checks that matter more than marketing language
- Keep the recovery phrase offline. The phrase is the ultimate backup key. Anyone who sees it can recreate the account and move funds without the hardware wallet.
- Verify addresses on the device. Clipboard malware can replace an address displayed on a computer or phone. Compare the recipient shown by the signer with the intended address before approval.
- Use a separate test transaction. Send a small amount first, confirm receipt and test the return or signing path before relying on a new workflow for a large balance.
- Separate daily and long-term accounts. A hardware wallet reduces key exposure, but approving a malicious program instruction can still authorize an unwanted action. Keep only the funds needed for routine activity in an account used frequently.
- Protect the device and backup independently. A PIN protects the physical device; it does not replace secure recovery-phrase storage. Consider how heirs or a trusted recovery plan could access funds without leaving the phrase in an online document.
- Follow Solana’s production-signing rule. Solana’s official production guidance says: “Never embed private keys in client-side code, bundle them into a frontend, or commit them to source control.” The same principle applies to scripts, support tickets and cloud notes.
Common failure modes and what to do
The wallet does not detect the device
Check the model and firmware, close other wallet extensions that may claim the connection, reconnect using the method documented for that app, and confirm that the account type is supported. Do not install an unofficial driver or restore the hardware wallet into a software wallet as a workaround.
Recommended Free Tools
The app says the model is unsupported
Treat the message as an integration limitation. A device may support Solana through another wallet while remaining unsupported in the app you opened. Check the wallet’s current compatibility list and, if necessary, choose a wallet application that supports the device and transaction features you need.
The address on the device is different
Reject the transaction. Verify the recipient from a trusted source, check whether you selected the wrong account or derivation path, and inspect the computer or phone for clipboard-replacing malware. Do not approve merely because the address in the app looks familiar.
The transaction expires after review
Return to the wallet, refresh or rebuild the transaction and approve the newly generated request. The documented Ledger provider flow addresses this by refreshing the blockhash after device approval; other integrations may require a different retry procedure.
The signed transaction will not broadcast
Confirm that the broadcaster accepts the transaction version and signatures produced by the device, that the blockhash is still valid, and that the account has enough SOL for fees. Preserve the unsigned request and error message, but never send the recovery phrase or private key to support.

Before purchasing or funding a device, answer each question with a documented “yes”:
- Does the exact hardware model support Solana signing?
- Does your chosen wallet application support that model, your preferred connection and every Solana transaction type you plan to use?
- Can you describe how unsigned data reaches the device and how the signed result returns to an online broadcaster?
- Can you verify the recipient, amount, fee and meaningful program actions on the device screen?
- What happens if review takes longer than the recent blockhash lifetime?
- Have you completed a small-value test without exposing the recovery phrase?
- Do you have a secure, offline recovery-phrase backup and a plan for device loss?
