The right fiduciary financial advisor is the one whose legal capacity, services, compensation, conflicts, and total cost match your situation—not simply someone with “financial planner” on a business card. Start by defining the help you need, then verify the person and firm, read their disclosures, and compare the dollars you would pay under the proposed engagement.
For U.S. consumers, this process means distinguishing investment advice from brokerage or insurance sales, asking how every party is compensated, and checking regulatory records before signing. The steps below show how to do that systematically.

Start with the service you actually need
Write down the decision or problem you want help with before interviewing anyone. Common engagements fall into four categories:
- Investment management: selecting and monitoring a portfolio, placing trades, and providing agreed investment oversight.
- A one-time financial plan: a written analysis covering specified goals such as retirement, cash flow, insurance, education funding, or estate-planning coordination.
- Ongoing financial planning: recurring advice and monitoring as your income, taxes, family, goals, and account balances change.
- A combination: continuing planning together with investment management.
Ask what is included and what is outside the engagement. A person may prepare a plan without managing investments, manage a portfolio without broader planning, or offer both. A title such as “financial advisor” or “financial planner” does not establish the scope of services, the products the person can recommend, or the legal standard that applies in every interaction.

Questions that define the engagement
- What products and services do you offer?
- Will you provide a financial plan, manage investments, or both?
- What continuing work and monitoring are included, and how often will we meet?
- What work is outside the engagement or billed separately?
- Can you recommend only a limited number of products or providers? If so, why?
Request the answers in the proposed agreement or another written description. Verbal assurances are difficult to compare later, particularly when several affiliated companies or professionals are involved.
What “fiduciary” means—and what it does not mean
Under the CFP Board’s Code and Standards, CFP professionals must act as fiduciaries whenever they provide financial advice to a client. The duties include loyalty, care, and following the client’s instructions. The loyalty duty requires avoiding conflicts or fully disclosing material conflicts, obtaining informed consent, and managing those conflicts.
“The cornerstone of the new Code & Standards is the requirement that all CFP® professionals act as a fiduciary at all times when providing financial advice to a client,” CFP Board CEO Kevin R. Keller said in a May 15, 2019, news release.

That standard should not be generalized to everyone who uses “advisor” or “planner.” The SEC describes investment advisers as people or firms in the business of giving advice about securities, while brokerage, insurance, and other professional relationships can operate under different rules and compensation structures. One person can also act in different capacities for different services.
Verify the capacity, not just the label
Ask which entity is providing each service, which written agreement governs it, and when the person is acting as an investment adviser, broker, insurance agent, or another professional. Ask whether the fiduciary obligation applies to the entire relationship or only to specified advice. A careful answer should identify the applicable standard and the disclosure that explains it.

Compare fee methods without assuming one is automatically best
SEC investor guidance identifies several compensation methods. Each can fit different work patterns, account sizes, and client preferences; none is inherently the cheapest or most suitable for everyone.
| Fee method | How it is commonly described | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage of managed assets | A recurring percentage based on assets under management | Which assets are included, how are values calculated, when is the charge deducted, and do rates change by asset tier or service? |
| Hourly | A charge for time spent on defined advice or planning work | What is the hourly rate, estimated number of hours, billing increments, and treatment of work that exceeds the estimate? |
| Fixed fee | A stated amount for a defined plan or service | Exactly what deliverables and revisions are included, how long the engagement lasts, and what triggers additional charges? |
| Commission | Compensation connected to transactions or products | Which products generate compensation, how much is paid, who pays it, and what alternatives were considered? |
| Combination | Two or more methods used together | Which service produces each charge, whether any payment can occur twice for the same work, and how the components interact? |
For every proposal, obtain the rate, the dollar calculation, the billing date or frequency, and the event that ends or changes the charge. Ask whether the fee is negotiable and whether discounts depend on assets, service level, household relationship, or another condition.
Translate a quoted rate into dollars
For an asset-based quote, ask the adviser to show the calculation using the valuation method and billing period that will appear in the agreement. For hourly or fixed work, request an estimate and the circumstances that could increase it. For commissions, ask for the payment associated with each recommended product or transaction.
Do not compare a headline percentage with an hourly or fixed quote without putting all options on the same time horizon. A recurring charge may continue while assets are managed; a planning fee may be paid once but cover less continuing work. Compare the service received and the expected dollar total, not just the format of the quote.
Calculate the complete cost, not only the advisory fee
Your total expense can include several layers. The advisory fee is only one component. Ask for an estimate in dollars and, where meaningful, as a percentage of the assets or account value involved.

- Advisory compensation: the percentage, hourly, fixed, commission, or combined amount paid to the professional or firm.
- Brokerage and custody charges: costs associated with where assets are held and trades are executed.
- Account fees: charges for maintaining, transferring, closing, or administering an account.
- Transaction expenses: commissions, markups, markdowns, spreads, or other trade-related costs where applicable.
- Fund and product expenses: operating expenses and other charges inside mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, annuities, or other recommended products.
- Planning or special-project charges: separate work such as a tax analysis, retirement projection, or plan update if it is not included.
Form ADV Part 2 disclosures describe an adviser’s fee schedule, whether fees are negotiable, how billing works and how often fees are charged. They also discuss other client costs, including brokerage, custody, and fund expenses. Use those disclosures to test the proposal, then ask the candidate to identify which costs apply to your accounts.

Compensation tied directly or indirectly to recommended investments can create incentives involving investment types, fund families, share classes, and trading. Ask whether the adviser, firm, affiliates, or related parties receive commissions, 12b-1 fees, revenue sharing, referral compensation, or any other payment from a product provider or platform.
Then ask how the conflict is avoided, disclosed, or managed; whether lower-cost or unaffiliated alternatives are available; and how the recommendation would change if the payment did not exist. A clear explanation should identify the payer, the amount or calculation, and the disclosure or policy that governs the arrangement.
Understand “fee-only” and “fee-based” language
CFP Board standards address how CFP professionals describe compensation and distinguish fee-only from fee-based arrangements. Treat both terms as starting points for questions, not as a guarantee of low cost, absence of every possible conflict, or suitability for your needs.
Ask what the professional, the firm, and related parties actually receive. Request the explanation in writing and reconcile it with the agreement and disclosures. A person may describe the primary relationship one way while an affiliated entity receives another form of compensation, so clarify the entire arrangement rather than relying on a marketing label.

Use regulatory disclosures and verification tools
Perform due diligence on both the individual and the firm. The SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) system can help you locate the most recent Form ADV for a relevant registered adviser.
| Record or document | What it helps you examine |
|---|---|
| Form ADV Part 1 | The adviser’s business, ownership, affiliations, and regulatory or client problems reported in the filing. |
| Form ADV Part 2 | Services, investment strategies, fee schedules, billing practices, negotiability, conflicts, and other client expenses. |
| Form CRS | A concise relationship summary for retail investors comparing investment-advisory and brokerage offerings, where applicable. |
| IAPD | A way to locate an adviser’s current registration information and Form ADV filings. |
| BrokerCheck | A source for checking broker registration and reported disciplinary information. |
| CFP professional verification | A way to confirm whether an individual currently holds the CFP certification and to review relevant public information. |
Read both parts of Form ADV rather than stopping at a directory listing. Check the current version and whether Form CRS applies to the candidate’s relationship. Registration frameworks, forms, databases, and professional standards can change, so use the current records when you compare candidates.
Interpret disciplinary information carefully
A disclosure is a reason to investigate, not an automatic conclusion. Determine who was involved, when the matter occurred, what conduct was alleged or established, and whether it relates to the services you are considering. Ask the candidate for context and compare the explanation with the official record. Consider the person and the firm separately because a firm-level matter may not involve the individual you would hire, and an individual matter may not describe the firm’s full history.

- Define the work. “What services will you provide, and what is outside the engagement?” Ask whether the relationship is a one-time plan, ongoing planning, investment management, or a combination.
- Establish continuity. “What continuing work and monitoring are included? Who will provide it if my primary contact leaves?”
- Check relevant experience. “What experience do you have with clients whose circumstances resemble mine, and what licenses or credentials do you hold?”
- Identify product limits. “Can you recommend only certain products or providers? If so, what limits apply and why?”
- Map every payment. “How are you and your firm paid? Do you or related parties receive sales compensation, referral payments, or other compensation from products or providers?”
- Request a total-cost estimate. “What is my expected total cost in dollars and as a percentage, including adviser fees and relevant fund, brokerage, custody, transaction, or account expenses?”
- Clarify billing and termination. “How and when are fees assessed? Are they negotiable? What happens if I terminate the engagement, and are prepaid amounts refunded?”
- Discuss conflicts. “What conflicts exist, and how are they avoided, disclosed, or managed?”
- Request documents. “May I review your Form ADV Parts 1 and 2 and Form CRS, if applicable?”
- Verify history. “Have you or your firm had relevant regulatory or client disciplinary matters? Where can I verify the information?”
The wording above follows the SEC’s consumer questions about products, service limitations, compensation, experience, licenses, and disciplinary history. A useful Form CRS question is: “Given my financial situation, should I choose an investment advisory service, a brokerage service, or a combination of both?”

Compare candidates on the same six axes
After the interviews, create one worksheet for each candidate. Compare:
- Scope and continuity: what is delivered, how often, by whom, and for how long.
- Expertise and credentials: experience relevant to your circumstances, licenses, and credentials that can be verified.
- Total expected cost and billing: every adviser, product, account, custody, brokerage, and transaction charge, plus when each is collected.
- Product restrictions and compensation sources: whether recommendations are limited and who pays the professional or related parties.
- Conflicts and controls: the conflicts identified and the specific ways they are avoided, disclosed, or managed.
- Registration and disciplinary record: current filings for the individual and firm, and the relevance of any disclosed matter.
Use the candidate’s written proposal and current disclosures as the evidence for each comparison. If one candidate will not provide a clear fee calculation or compensation explanation, that is itself a meaningful difference in transparency.
Common mistakes that produce expensive surprises
- Choosing by title: “planner” does not tell you what the person can sell, what services are included, or which standard applies.
- Comparing only percentages: a low advisory rate can coexist with costly products, account charges, trading expenses, or separate planning fees.
- Assuming fee-only means conflict-free: confirm all compensation received by the professional, firm, affiliates, and related parties.
- Ignoring product restrictions: a limited menu can affect diversification, share-class selection, or access to lower-cost alternatives.
- Accepting a verbal total: insist on a written calculation, billing schedule, and termination terms.
- Checking only the individual: review the firm, ownership, affiliations, and firm-level disclosures as well.
- Using an old filing: confirm that the Form ADV, Form CRS, registration, and professional verification information are current.
- Treating a disciplinary record as either irrelevant or disqualifying: examine the facts, dates, resolution, and connection to the proposed service.
Before you sign and after the relationship begins
Before signing, confirm that the final agreement matches the proposal and disclosures. It should identify the services, fees, billing method, outside costs, conflicts, termination process, and the entity or entities providing the work. Make sure you know where assets will be held, who has authority to trade or withdraw funds, and how you will receive statements.
