Compare the live bid-ask spread, order-book depth, expected slippage, your maker or taker tier, and every funding and withdrawal charge. A low advertised commission is not necessarily cheap if the quote is wide, the book is shallow, or your payment method carries a large fee.
Check the fee schedule and availability for your country or state immediately before opening an account. Rates, supported assets, payment rails and regional rules change, and no single venue is cheapest for every trader.

Why exchange choice is a market-quality decision
An exchange is not just a place to submit an order. It is a market with its own participants, quotes, depth, matching rules and charges. Two venues can show slightly different prices for the same asset, and the difference you actually pay depends on how much you buy, how quickly you need execution and whether you add or remove liquidity.
Liquidity is pair-specific. A venue may have a busy bitcoin market but a thin market for a smaller token, or deep activity during U.S. hours and very little depth overnight. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) reported in 2024 that larger exchanges generally had better spreads and depth, and that bitcoin and ether were more liquid than other assets in its sample. ESMA also found that the top 10 exchanges processed 90% of global volume in 2023. That concentration is a useful screening signal, not proof that a particular pair on a particular venue will fill your order efficiently.

Your objective is to estimate the cost of completing your own trade. Record the quote and book conditions at the time you normally trade, model your order against visible depth, add commissions and funding charges, then repeat the exercise on more than one venue.
Start with the exact pair and order you will trade
Write down the asset, quote currency, typical order value and expected frequency before comparing platforms. BTC/USD, BTC/EUR and BTC/USDT are different markets with different participants and books. Even two USD markets can have different depth and fees. A comparison that uses exchange-wide volume while ignoring your pair can produce a misleading result.
Define your trading pattern
- Pair: name the base and quote assets exactly, such as BTC/USD or ETH/EUR.
- Order size: use a realistic amount, including your largest occasional order rather than only your average.
- Order type: decide whether you normally use market orders, passive limit orders, stop orders or recurring purchases.
- Timing: note the hours and days when you trade; depth and spreads can change materially during volatile or quiet periods.
- Settlement needs: identify whether you will keep coins on the venue, withdraw after each purchase or transfer periodically.
These details determine which fees and liquidity measurements matter. A small monthly purchase may be dominated by a card charge or withdrawal minimum, while a $10,000 market order is more sensitive to depth, spread and slippage.
Measure liquidity instead of relying on volume rankings
Liquidity describes how much you can trade near the current price without moving the market against yourself. Examine three observable elements: the top-of-book spread, the quantity available at successive price levels, and recent executed volume for your pair.
Read the order book
- Open the exchange’s advanced or order-book trading screen for your exact pair.
- Record the highest displayed bid and lowest displayed ask at the same moment.
- Measure the quantities available at the best prices and at price bands 10, 25 and 50 basis points from the midpoint.
- Repeat the observation several times during your normal trading window and during a volatile period.
- Compare the amount available within each band with your intended order size.
Depth is more informative than a single volume headline. If your order is larger than the quantity near the midpoint, the matching engine will fill the remainder at progressively worse prices. A venue with lower total volume can still be the better choice for your pair if its nearby depth is stronger when you trade.

Use volume as a screening signal
Recent executed volume helps indicate an active market, but reported volume can include activity that does not translate into tight, reliable quotes for your pair. Treat it as a way to narrow the field, then verify the live book. ESMA’s finding that larger exchanges tend to have superior liquidity is a broad pattern, not a guarantee for every asset or region.
Calculate the spread as a percentage cost
Binance Academy defines the bid-ask spread as the gap between the lowest asking price and the highest bid price. A market order generally crosses that gap, so a wider spread raises your entry and exit cost even when a platform advertises a low commission.

Calculate the midpoint as (best bid + best ask) / 2. Then calculate the spread percentage as (best ask - best bid) / midpoint × 100. For a round trip, buying at the ask and later selling at the bid exposes you to approximately the full spread before commissions and price movement. Compare spreads for the same pair, in the same quote currency and over the same time window.
Do not compare a displayed “instant buy” price with an order-book quote as if they were equivalent. A simple widget may include a spread in the quoted price, while an advanced screen shows bids and asks and charges a separate trading fee.
Estimate slippage at your own size
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected and the volume-weighted price you actually receive. Market orders cross the spread and consume available levels. A limit order can control the worst acceptable price, but it may execute only partially or remain unfilled.

Manual slippage simulation
- List each ask level and the quantity available for a buy, or each bid level for a sell.
- Subtract the quantity at each level from your intended order until the order is fully allocated.
- Multiply each filled quantity by its price and divide total cost by total quantity to obtain the volume-weighted average execution price.
- Compare that average with the midpoint immediately before submission.
- Add the explicit trading fee to the result and express the difference as a percentage of the midpoint.
For example, if the first $2,000 of a buy fills near the ask but the next $8,000 reaches several higher levels, the order’s average price can be materially worse than the headline quote. Repeat the simulation with your largest normal order and with a stressed book in which some displayed liquidity disappears.
Choose an order type deliberately
- Market order: prioritizes execution and accepts the available prices; useful when certainty matters more than price precision.
- Limit order: sets a maximum buy or minimum sell price; it may earn a maker rate if it rests, but there is no guarantee of a fill.
- Post-only limit: where offered, prevents immediate execution so the order does not unintentionally pay a taker fee; it can be rejected if it would cross the spread.
- Stop and stop-limit orders: add trigger behavior and may face fast-market slippage when the stop activates.
Never assume a limit order is free of execution risk. A missed fill can be more costly than a small spread saving if you need to enter or exit promptly.
Compare the complete fee stack
Build a personal fee sheet instead of copying a headline rate. Include the rate that applies to your rolling 30-day volume, your order’s maker or taker status, and all charges associated with moving money and coins.

Understand maker and taker tiers
A maker order adds resting liquidity; a taker order removes liquidity by matching immediately. Your classification depends on how the order executes, not merely on selecting “limit.” A limit order that crosses the spread can be charged as taker.
Kraken’s published executed-order schedule illustrates the range: maker rates run from -0.02% to 0.25% and taker rates from 0.10% to 0.80%, with the exact rate depending on 30-day USD volume, pair and order role. A negative maker rate is a rebate under the stated schedule, not a universal guarantee. On the same $10,000 order, a 0.25% taker charge is $25, while a 0.12% maker charge is $12, before spread or other costs.

Use your own rolling 30-day tier, not the best rate shown on a marketing page. If your volume is below a threshold, calculate at the higher applicable tier and note whether the exchange measures volume in USD or another currency.
Separate simple purchase widgets from order-book trading
Trading mode changes the economics. Coinbase explains that its simple buy, sell and convert quotes include a spread. Its Advanced interface interacts directly with the order book and does not include that same bundled spread; bids, asks and depth are shown in real time. Binance.US likewise distinguishes simple Buy/Sell/Convert pricing, which includes a spread, from order-book trading with stated trading fees.
For a small recurring purchase, a simple widget may be convenient if you understand the quoted price and total charge. For larger or price-sensitive orders, use the advanced book, compare the displayed spread and model slippage. Always preview the final amount of crypto received and the total fiat debited before confirming.

Funding costs can outweigh trading costs for small transactions. Binance.US lists ACH deposits and withdrawals as free under its published terms, while debit or credit-card deposits carry a 3.99% fee. The same schedule lists separate network and trading fees, and simple purchase prices include a spread. Treat these as examples of how a fee stack works, not as a promise that every user or region receives the same treatment.
Check whether a bank rail is instant or subject to a holding period, whether a withdrawal has a minimum, and whether the exchange or your bank charges an additional wire or card fee. For crypto withdrawals, identify the exact network, destination address format and current network charge. Sending an asset over an unsupported network can make recovery difficult or impossible.

Calculate the break-even effect on a small purchase
Suppose you buy $100 using a method with a 3.99% charge: the payment fee alone is $3.99 before spread and trading fees. A free ACH deposit followed by an order-book trade may cost less even if the trading commission is nonzero. Conversely, a bank wire fee can make a very small deposit uneconomic. Compare the fixed and percentage components at your actual amount.
Verify geography, assets and account rules
Availability is part of cost. Confirm that the venue serves your country or state, supports your fiat currency and lists the exact asset-network combination you need. State-specific accounts can have different withdrawal treatment; Binance.US notes that some accounts use BitGo-powered arrangements with distinct withdrawal rules.
- Read the current jurisdiction list and restrictions before completing identity verification.
- Confirm that your bank or card issuer permits transfers to the exchange.
- Check whether the pair is available in your region or only through a conversion product.
- Review deposit holds, withdrawal limits, verification levels and travel-rule information requirements.
- Save the fee page and terms you relied on, then recheck them immediately before funding the account.
A repeatable exchange-comparison workflow
- Shortlist venues: remove any that do not legally serve your location or support your pair and funding method.
- Open the exact market: use the advanced order-book screen rather than an exchange-wide dashboard.
- Capture live conditions: record bid, ask, midpoint, visible quantities and recent executed volume at your normal trading time.
- Measure spread: convert the bid-ask gap to a percentage of midpoint and repeat during a busier or more volatile session.
- Simulate execution: walk your intended order through the visible levels and calculate the volume-weighted price and slippage.
- Apply your tier: use the maker or taker rate tied to your actual 30-day volume and expected order behavior.
- Add non-trading charges: include the chosen deposit rail, fiat withdrawal, crypto withdrawal, network, conversion and financing costs.
- Check the final preview: verify the amount received, total debited and any hold or withdrawal restriction.
- Test with a small amount: complete a small deposit, trade and withdrawal before committing larger balances.
- Recheck periodically: repeat the measurements when your order size, pair, trading hours or fee tier changes.
Worked decision examples
Small recurring buyer
If you buy $50 to $200 each month, fixed withdrawal charges, card percentages and bundled spreads may matter more than a few hundredths of a percentage point in maker fees. Compare the total amount of crypto delivered after the payment fee and quoted spread. A bank-funded order-book purchase can be cheaper, but only if the bank rail’s timing and any minimums fit your routine.
Occasional $10,000 spot trader
At this size, inspect depth within at least 10 to 50 basis points and simulate the full order. A $12 maker commission versus a $25 taker commission, as in Kraken’s published example, is meaningful, but a wider spread or several dollars of slippage can erase that difference. Use a limit or post-only order only when you can tolerate a partial or delayed fill.
Frequent or leveraged trader
Prioritize reliable depth, clear liquidation rules, funding-rate disclosures and the fee tier you can realistically maintain. Perpetual funding and borrowing charges can exceed spot commissions. Confirm whether your strategy’s orders actually rest as maker orders; rapid adjustments often execute as taker.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by global volume alone: verify your pair’s live depth and spread.
- Comparing advertised commissions only: add spread, slippage, payment, withdrawal and network costs.
- Assuming every limit order earns a maker rate: check whether it crosses the book or is canceled by a post-only rule.
- Using an instant-buy quote for a large order: compare the advanced order book and final execution estimate.
- Ignoring order size: model your largest normal trade, not just a test order.
- Overlooking regional differences: read the schedule for your state or country and account type.
- Leaving assets on an unfamiliar venue indefinitely: understand custody, withdrawal limits and security controls before increasing balances.
- Failing to recheck terms: fee tiers, supported rails and network charges can change without matching your old calculation.
Practical checklist before opening an account
- Is my exact pair available in my jurisdiction?
- What are the current bid, ask and percentage spread during my trading hours?
- How much quantity is visible within 10, 25 and 50 basis points?
- What slippage does my intended order size produce?
- Which maker or taker tier applies to my rolling 30-day volume?
- Does the product use a bundled spread or direct order-book pricing?
- What will my chosen deposit method, fiat withdrawal and crypto network withdrawal cost?
- Are there holds, minimums, limits or state-specific withdrawal rules?
- Can I complete a small deposit, trade and withdrawal successfully before scaling up?
Bottom line: choose on measured all-in cost
Use exchange-wide size to create a shortlist, then decide from pair-level evidence. The winning venue for your situation is the one that combines sufficient depth and a tight spread for your order, realistic maker or taker pricing, workable funding rails and acceptable withdrawal rules. Recalculate the all-in cost whenever your pair, order size, trading time, location or fee tier changes.
