Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best corporate bond is not the one with the highest coupon or headline yield. For a U.S. investor, compare the issuer’s ability to pay, the bond’s seniority and protections, the price and type of yield shown, maturity and interest-rate sensitivity, call provisions, liquidity, taxes, and every transaction cost. Then confirm the listing against the offering documents, issuer filings, and reported trading data before placing an order.
What to decide before opening a bond listing
An online platform can make individual corporate bonds look as easy to compare as stocks, but the quote is only one part of the decision. Your first step is to define the job the bond must do in your portfolio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- When might you need the money? A bond held until maturity still carries default risk. A bond sold earlier can be worth more or less than you paid, especially if market rates or the issuer’s credit condition change.
- Is predictable cash income important? Fixed-coupon bonds pay a stated rate, while floating-rate bonds reset according to their benchmark terms. A zero-coupon bond pays no interim interest.
- How much price movement can you accept? Longer maturities generally fluctuate more when interest rates move. A shorter maturity may better fit money that could be needed soon, although it does not remove credit or liquidity risk.
- Could you tolerate a missed payment or loss of principal? Corporate bonds are not insured deposits. Even a highly rated issuer can deteriorate, and ratings are opinions about relative credit risk rather than guarantees.
The SEC advises considering personal circumstances, time horizon, risk tolerance, and existing holdings, particularly when evaluating high-yield bonds. Set these constraints before comparing yields; otherwise the platform’s highest number can pull you toward a security that does not fit.
Step 1: Identify the exact security, not just the issuer
Large companies can have many bonds outstanding at the same time. Each issue can differ in maturity, coupon, seniority, collateral, call schedule, and price. Record the exact listing you are considering.

- Maturity date: This is when principal is scheduled to be repaid if the bond has not been called or otherwise redeemed earlier.
- Coupon and payment frequency: The coupon is the stated interest rate on the bond’s face amount; it is not your return when you buy at a premium or discount.
- Offered price: Check whether the quote is expressed as a percentage of face value and whether accrued interest is added to the amount you pay.
- Yield measure: Note whether the platform is showing yield to maturity, yield to call, yield to worst, or another calculation, and the assumptions used.
- Rating and call status: Treat both as details to verify, not as permanent labels. Ratings are reviewed and can change.
Save a screenshot or export of these fields with the date and time. A quote can change, and two listings with similar names may be different securities.
Step 2: Evaluate credit risk and bondholder protections
Use ratings as a starting point
The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy explains that credit rating agencies assign ratings based on their evaluation of the risk that a company may default on its bonds. A lower rating generally indicates greater default risk, but a rating is neither a promise of payment nor a substitute for reviewing the issuer’s current finances.
Check the issuer’s latest financial statements, debt schedule, cash flow, and upcoming maturities. Consider whether earnings and cash generation appear sufficient to service all debt, not just the particular bond shown on the platform. A rating may lag a rapid change in leverage, liquidity, or business conditions.
Find where the bond stands in a failure
Read the prospectus, offering memorandum, and indenture to determine whether the claim is:
- Secured: Specific collateral is pledged. The value and priority of that collateral still matter in a bankruptcy.
- Senior unsecured: No specific collateral secures the claim, but it generally ranks ahead of junior unsecured debt under the bond terms.
- Subordinated or junior: The holder agrees to be paid after more senior claims, which can reduce recovery in a restructuring.
The documents also describe covenants, events of default, acceleration rights, guarantees, and permitted additional borrowing. These provisions can be more important than a small difference in coupon because they determine what the issuer may do and what remedies bondholders have if payments are missed.
Give high-yield issues extra scrutiny
High-yield bonds offer higher yields because investors are taking greater default risk. They can also carry greater liquidity and economic risks. Review restrictions on dividends and new debt, collateral, payment-in-kind provisions, and the consequences of a missed payment rather than assuming the extra yield is compensation you will certainly receive.

Step 3: Compare price and yield on the same basis
Coupon is not your return
The coupon is calculated from the bond’s face amount. If you pay less than face value, your potential return includes the discount that may be realized at maturity; if you pay more, part of the coupon can be offset by the premium you may lose when principal is repaid. Accrued interest may also be included in the amount charged at settlement.

Ask the broker, in FINRA’s suggested wording, “what is the yield for this bond and what type of yield is it?” A platform’s displayed yield may assume a particular settlement date, call outcome, or reinvestment convention.
Understand maturity and call yields
- Yield to maturity (YTM) estimates the annualized return if scheduled payments are made and the bond remains outstanding until its stated maturity.
- Yield to call (YTC) evaluates an earlier redemption date and the call price specified in the documents.
- Yield to worst (YTW) compares the relevant permitted redemption outcomes and identifies the lowest yield under those assumptions.
For a callable bond, a YTM alone can overstate the period you actually receive the coupon. Compare YTC and YTW whenever the issue can be redeemed early, and verify which call dates and prices the calculation includes.
Do not mistake a quote for a guaranteed exit price
A platform’s offer is the price at which you may be able to buy at that moment, subject to the platform’s execution and inventory. It is not a promise that you can sell at the same price. Corporate bond pricing is less transparent than equity pricing, and the spread between a dealer’s purchase and sale prices can be material.
Step 4: Match maturity and rate sensitivity to your holding period
Bond prices generally move opposite prevailing market rates. When rates rise, existing fixed-rate bonds usually fall in price so that their yields become competitive; when rates fall, their prices generally rise. Longer-maturity bonds usually have greater sensitivity to these changes than otherwise similar shorter-maturity bonds.

Inflation creates a separate risk: fixed payments may buy less in the future as prices rise. A bond with a high nominal coupon can still lose purchasing power if inflation remains elevated.
Step 5: Inspect calls, redemption terms, and payment provisions
A callable bond can be repaid before its stated maturity, often when market rates have fallen. The issuer then replaces expensive debt with cheaper financing, while you may have to reinvest at a lower rate. A call can also limit the bond’s price appreciation because investors know the issuer may redeem it near the call price.
Read the schedule for:
- the first date on which the issuer may call the bond;
- each subsequent call date;
- the redemption price or premium paid on each date;
- any make-whole, sinking-fund, put, conversion, or extraordinary-redemption provisions; and
- notice requirements and the conditions that trigger early payment.
Payment-in-kind provisions deserve particular attention in higher-risk issues. They may allow interest to be added to principal instead of paid in cash, changing both your cash flow and your exposure to the issuer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 6: Check liquidity using actual trade evidence
Liquidity is the ability to sell at a price reasonably close to the bond’s value when you need to exit. A bond that rarely trades may require a large concession to attract a buyer, regardless of its stated rating or coupon.
Use FINRA’s Fixed Income Data and Bond Facts services to review eligible TRACE-reported activity, including execution time, price, yield, transaction size, and recent trade frequency where available. Compare multiple recent trades rather than relying on a single print. Note whether trades are small retail-sized transactions or larger institutional blocks; the price available for your order may differ.
Thin or stale trading is a warning to plan on holding to maturity, accept a wider bid-ask spread, or choose a more actively traded issue. It is not proof that the bond is mispriced, and a current platform quote is not evidence that a fair exit will be available later.

Step 7: Calculate the all-in cost
Before submitting the order, ask for the total amount debited and the amount of face value being purchased. Include every component the broker discloses:
- commission, if any;
- dealer markup on a purchase or markdown on a sale;
- accrued interest paid to the seller;
- platform or transaction charges; and
- any difference between the displayed quote and the executable price.
FINRA notes that bond transaction costs may not be clearly disclosed until after a transaction. Investor.gov advises investors who sell before maturity to ask about the markdown and compare firms. Request a written explanation of the markup or markdown and compare the actual purchase amount and expected proceeds, not just the headline yield.
A low coupon bond bought at a deep discount can have a better net return than a high-coupon bond bought at a large premium, but only after costs, taxes, call outcomes, and the holding period are included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 8: Account for taxes and payment structure
Tax treatment changes the return you keep. Verify whether interest is taxable in the account and jurisdiction involved, and whether the bond’s structure creates taxable income without a matching cash payment.
Zero-coupon bonds are the clearest example. The SEC gives an illustrative five-year example in which an investor pays $800 for a bond with $1,000 face value, receives no interim coupon, and receives $1,000 at maturity. Although no cash interest is paid along the way, applicable tax rules can require recognition of accrued interest before maturity. Confirm the treatment with a qualified tax professional.

Floating-rate bonds reset according to the benchmark, spread, floor, and reset dates in their documents. Fixed-rate bonds keep the same coupon even when market rates change. Compare the expected cash-flow pattern with your tax bracket and spending needs rather than comparing pretax yields alone.

Step 9: Read the primary documents and verify filings
For a registered public offering, read the prospectus and the issuer’s reports. Confirm the legal issuer, ranking, collateral, covenants, call schedule, payment dates, use of proceeds, and material risk factors. Public-company financial statements, debt schedules, and debt ratios can help you assess financial health.
SEC EDGAR and FINRA market-data tools are useful starting points, but the security-specific offering document controls when a platform summary conflicts with a term or date. Look for amendments, supplemental indentures, ratings actions, and recent filings that may post-date the original prospectus.
If the listing is difficult to reconcile with the documents, pause the order and ask the broker to explain the discrepancy. Do not rely on a generic issuer page when the exact CUSIP has different terms.
A side-by-side framework for comparing two bonds
| Comparison axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Credit | Issuer condition, rating, secured or unsecured status, seniority, covenants | Default probability and potential recovery depend on both the issuer and the bond’s legal terms. |
| Return | Offered price, coupon, yield to maturity, and yield to call or worst when relevant | Coupon alone does not capture the price paid or early-redemption outcomes. |
| Time and rates | Maturity, duration, and your expected holding period | Longer maturities generally bring more sensitivity to rate moves. |
| Optionality | Call schedule, redemption price, and payment provisions | Issuer actions can change when and how you are paid. |
| Liquidity | Trade frequency, recent volume and sizes, and bid-ask information if shown | Thin trading can make an early sale difficult or costly. |
| Costs | Commission, markup or markdown, accrued interest, and other charges | Costs reduce realized return and may not be obvious in the quote. |
| Tax | Taxability of interest and accrued-interest treatment | After-tax return can differ materially from displayed yield. |
Complete this comparison for each candidate using the same date and yield convention. If one field cannot be verified, treat that uncertainty as a reason to investigate, not as a favorable assumption.
An online-platform workflow before you click Buy
- Write your constraints. Record the date you may need the money, acceptable price volatility, desired cash flow, and the maximum credit risk you can tolerate.
- Filter cautiously. Use maturity, rating, coupon type, and call status to find candidates, but do not let a filter replace document review.
- Capture the listing. Save the issuer, CUSIP, maturity, coupon, rating, call status, ask price, yield measure, face amount, and displayed costs.
- Check recent trades. Look up the CUSIP in FINRA Fixed Income Data or Bond Facts and review the timing, prices, yields, and sizes of reported trades.
- Read the documents. Verify ranking, collateral, covenants, call prices, payment dates, and redemption language in the prospectus or offering document and issuer filings.
- Recalculate the return. Compare YTM, YTC, and YTW as applicable, then account for accrued interest, commissions, markups or markdowns, and taxes.
- Ask the broker specific questions. Confirm which yield is displayed, how the purchase price is calculated, whether a call changes the expected return, and what charges apply.
- Confirm order mechanics. Check the security’s minimum denomination, your order size, settlement details, and platform eligibility. These are security- and platform-specific.
- Place the order only after reconciliation. If the executable price, terms, or costs differ from your records, stop and resolve the difference before submitting.
Risk checklist: what can go wrong after purchase
| Risk | What it can do | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Credit or default | The issuer may miss interest or principal, causing a loss of all or a substantial part of the investment. | Financial condition, rating changes, debt obligations, seniority, collateral, and covenants. |
| Interest-rate | Rising rates can push the market price of an existing bond down. | Maturity, duration, and whether you might need to sell early. |
| Inflation | Fixed payments may buy less over time. | Real spending needs and the structure of the coupon. |
| Liquidity | Infrequent trading can force a sale at an unfavorable price or delay an exit. | Recent trade frequency, sizes, and available bid information. |
| Call and reinvestment | The issuer may repay early, leaving you to reinvest at a lower rate. | First call date, schedule, redemption price, and yield to worst. |
| High-yield and economic | Higher default, liquidity, and economic risks accompany the higher promised yield. | Covenants, payment-in-kind terms, leverage, cash flow, and recovery position. |
Red flags that should stop an order
- The issuer name is familiar, but the legal issuer or CUSIP does not match the documents.
- The platform shows a high yield without identifying whether it is YTM, YTC, or YTW.
- A callable bond’s yield to maturity looks attractive, but the first call date is soon and the call price is near par.
- Recent trade data are sparse, old, or materially different from the current offer.
- The platform does not clearly show accrued interest, markup, markdown, commission, or total cash required.
- The bond is subordinated or permits payment in kind, but the displayed quote emphasizes only the coupon.
- The issuer’s debt, cash flow, or filings have changed since the rating or original offering document.
- You may need the money before maturity and have no plan for a price decline or an illiquid market.
How to make the final choice
After completing the worksheet, eliminate any bond whose credit risk, liquidity, maturity, or legal terms do not fit your constraints. Among the remaining issues, compare after-tax, net-of-cost yields under the outcomes that are actually possible: maturity, each meaningful call date, and an early sale if you might need to exit.
Do not rank candidates by one number. A lower-yielding senior bond with stronger covenants and more reliable trading may be more suitable than a higher-yielding subordinated issue that can be called early and is difficult to sell. Conversely, a long maturity may be inappropriate for money needed soon even when the issuer is financially strong.
This process is general investor education, not an individualized recommendation or a ranking of securities or brokerages. Corporate bonds can lose value and can default; make the purchase only after the security-specific terms, costs, taxes, and risks are clear.
