The official way to check your Social Security Statement is through a personal my Social Security account at SSA.gov. After signing in, you can review the earnings record the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses, see personalized retirement estimates at different claiming ages, and test how future covered earnings could change those estimates. Review the record at least annually, because an incorrect year of earnings can affect eligibility and the amount of a future benefit.
What the Social Security Statement shows
Your Statement is SSA’s summary of the earnings and Social Security taxes recorded under your name. It also presents benefit estimates based on that record. The redesigned Statement includes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Your reported earnings history, year by year.
- Instructions for reporting an error in the record.
- A graph with personalized retirement estimates at nine different claiming ages.
- Information that helps you assess eligibility for retirement, disability and survivor benefits.
The earnings history is the foundation of the estimate. SSA’s own benefits-estimate guidance explains the relationship this way: “The more you earn and pay Social Security taxes (FICA), the higher your benefit payment.” That is a general rule, not a promise of a particular payment. Your actual result also depends on your covered earnings pattern, the age at which you start benefits and the assumptions used by the calculator.
How can I get a Social Security Statement?
Use a personal my Social Security account
Go to SSA.gov and choose the personal my Social Security account sign-in or registration option. SSA describes the account as the secure route to your Statement, earnings history and future benefit estimates. Follow the current prompts on the SSA site because identity-verification and sign-in screens can change.

- ID.me: SSA lists this option for users inside or outside the United States.
After you have authenticated, open the Statement or retirement-estimate area. The account-linked estimate uses the earnings record SSA has on file, so you do not have to retype every past year.
If you are 60 or older and do not have an online account
SSA says it currently mails a Statement to a worker age 60 or older who does not have an online account, approximately three months before the person’s birthday. SSA’s FAQ also says a person can request a mailed Statement and that it should arrive in four to six weeks. Those mailing rules and time frames are dated information; check SSA for the current request process before relying on them.
Make an annual review a routine
SSA encourages people to review the Statement every year. A yearly check catches a missing or misreported year while supporting records are easier to locate and before an error is carried into later estimates. Save a copy of the Statement or note the date you reviewed it, then compare each year’s entry with your own wage and tax records.

- Sign in to my Social Security. Use the current Login.gov or ID.me path shown by SSA.
- Open the Statement. Select the link for your Social Security Statement or retirement estimate.
- Read the earnings history from the earliest year forward. Look for missing years, an amount that is clearly wrong, or earnings assigned to a year in which you did not work.
- Compare the entries with your records. Use the wage, tax and employer records you retained. Check both the year and the amount; a correct total in the wrong year can still matter.
- Read SSA’s correction instructions. The redesigned Statement includes directions for reporting an error. Follow those instructions and provide the supporting information SSA requests.
- Save the result. Keep the reviewed Statement and any material you submit so you can track the correction and check the next version.
Do not assume that a projection is correct merely because it appears in your account. The estimate is only as reliable as the earnings record and the assumptions behind it.

What to do when an earnings year is wrong
Identify the exact problem
Write down the year, employer or type of earnings involved, and the amount shown versus the amount in your records. Distinguish a missing year from an amount that is too high or too low. That description will make it easier to follow SSA’s correction process.
Use SSA’s reporting instructions
The Statement contains instructions for reporting an error. Use that route rather than trying to alter an account estimate yourself. SSA, not the calculator, must decide whether the earnings record can be changed.
Recheck after the correction is processed
Once SSA has handled the report, sign in again and review the updated earnings history and estimate. Until the record is corrected, treat the displayed benefit amount as a projection based on the uncorrected data.

How do I estimate my future Social Security benefits?
Start with the personalized retirement estimate
- Sign in to my Social Security and open the Statement or retirement-estimate tool.
- Review the estimate at the claiming ages shown in the Statement. The redesigned Statement displays projections at nine different ages.
- Record the monthly amount and the age or date associated with each result.
- Run the estimate again after changing the expected future income assumption, if the tool offers that control.
- Label each result as either today’s dollars or future inflated dollars, and keep the calculator output with that label.
The tool’s future-income control matters because continued covered work can increase a benefit when the new earnings become one of your highest earning years. It does not mean every additional year automatically produces a larger payment; the effect depends on the earnings already in your record and the calculation rules.

Compare the reference claiming ages
At a minimum, compare the estimate for:
- Age 62, the earliest age identified in SSA’s calculator materials for retirement benefits.
- Your full retirement age, the age applicable to your birth year and Social Security rules.
- Age 70, the later reference age shown in SSA’s materials.
The Statement’s nine-age graph lets you see the progression rather than comparing only two points. Do not treat the largest monthly figure as an automatic recommendation. The choice involves your health, cash needs, work plans, other income and expected longevity, none of which SSA’s estimate can decide for you.
Keep dollar presentation consistent
SSA’s Online Calculator lets you choose between amounts expressed in today’s dollars and amounts expressed in future inflated dollars. Today’s-dollar figures are easier to compare with your current budget. Future-dollar figures reflect inflation assumptions and can look larger without representing more purchasing power.
When comparing scenarios, use the same dollar presentation, the same expected earnings and the same benefit start date except for the variable you are testing. A today’s-dollar result and a future-dollar result are not interchangeable, even when they come from the same calculator.

Which SSA calculator should you use?
| SSA tool | Best use | How earnings are supplied | Important limitation or date |
|---|---|---|---|
| my Social Security Retirement Estimate | A personalized projection tied to your SSA record; compare start ages and future income. | Uses the earnings record in your account. | Results depend on the accuracy of that record and the assumptions displayed by SSA. |
| Online Calculator | Estimate retirement, disability or survivor benefits, or model a case without relying on an account-linked projection. | You manually enter earnings from your Statement. | SSA said the most recent update was August 2026. It does not connect to the earnings database. |
| Quick Calculator | A fast, rough estimate when you need an initial sense of the benefit. | Uses limited information and assumed past earnings. | SSA cautions that the result may be unreliable without a substantial earnings history. |
| Detailed Calculator | More involved estimates requiring detailed inputs and assumptions. | You enter the information requested by the downloadable tool. | SSA identifies version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, and says it uses assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. Versions and assumptions can change. |
For most people checking their own retirement outlook, start with the account-linked estimate. Use the Online Calculator when you want to enter a different earnings path manually or estimate disability and survivor benefits. Treat the Quick Calculator as an orientation, not as a planning-grade result. The Detailed Calculator is useful when you need more control and are willing to supply more inputs.

How to make a useful comparison between claiming scenarios
A comparison is meaningful only when you hold the major assumptions steady. Create a simple worksheet with one row for each claiming age or date and columns for the items below:
- Claiming age or benefit-start date.
- Estimated monthly benefit.
- Whether the amount is in today’s dollars or future inflated dollars.
- The future annual covered-earnings assumption.
- The tool that generated the result.
- Whether the tool used your official SSA record or manually entered data.
First compare ages while keeping the earnings assumption unchanged. Then test a realistic future-work scenario and a no-further-earnings scenario, if the tool permits both. Label each run with its date because SSA can update the record, calculator interface or economic assumptions.
This process answers “What age should I compare when estimating Social Security?” without pretending there is one correct age for everyone. It shows the payment trade-off under clearly stated assumptions; it does not calculate your break-even age or provide an individualized financial recommendation.
2026 earnings and credit figures to handle carefully
SSA’s 2026 materials list the following figures:
| 2026 figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| $184,500 | SSA’s 2026 annual taxable maximum. Earnings above this amount do not increase Social Security benefits for that year. |
| $1,890 per credit | The amount of earnings SSA says is required for one Social Security credit in 2026. |
| Four credits per year | The maximum number of credits a person can earn in 2026. |
Credits help determine eligibility, and the number needed depends on the type of benefit. They are not a direct conversion of credits into a monthly payment. The $184,500 taxable maximum and $1,890 credit threshold are year-specific 2026 figures; recheck SSA’s current figures before using them for another year.

Special cases that need separate SSA guidance
Pensions from work not covered by Social Security
If you receive a pension from employment that did not pay into Social Security, SSA directs you to specialized resources addressing the rules commonly associated with non-covered work. Do not apply an adjustment from a general estimate on your own. Use the current SSA guidance for your circumstances, because the applicable treatment depends on the benefit and the pension history.
Incomplete or unusual earnings histories
The Quick Calculator can be especially weak when you do not have a substantial earnings history. Prefer the account-linked Statement when it is available, and use a manually entered calculator only when you can reproduce the relevant earnings accurately.
Changing tools or versions
Calculator interfaces, sign-in flows, annual limits and projection assumptions can change. Record the tool name, version or update date shown on the SSA page when you save an estimate. A result generated in August 2026 or with Detailed Calculator version 2026.2 should not be presented as a timeless benefit quote.

- Checking only the final estimated amount: Read the earnings history first; the estimate cannot fix a missing year.
- Comparing mixed dollar formats: Keep today’s-dollar and future-dollar outputs separate.
- Entering future income casually: Use a reasonable covered-earnings assumption and label it, rather than treating an optimistic salary as certain.
- Mixing calculator methods: An account estimate based on SSA’s record is not directly comparable with a Quick Calculator result based on limited assumptions.
- Ignoring the date: Taxable maximums, credit thresholds, calculator versions and assumptions are time-sensitive.
- Assuming a higher number is advice: SSA provides estimates; it does not choose your claiming age.
- Applying rules for non-covered pensions without checking: Those cases require the specialized SSA material identified for them.
A practical annual review checklist
- Sign in to my Social Security once a year.
- Download or save the current Statement.
- Compare every reported earnings year with your personal records.
- Report a discrepancy using the instructions included with the Statement.
- Open the retirement estimate and note the nine displayed claiming ages.
- Run consistent scenarios for age 62, your full retirement age and age 70.
- Test a realistic future covered-earnings assumption if you expect to keep working.
- Mark whether each result uses today’s dollars or future inflated dollars.
- Record the calculator name, version or update date and the date you ran it.
- Return to SSA for current thresholds or special-case guidance before making a decision.
What the estimate can—and cannot—tell you
The estimate can show how SSA’s current record translates into projected monthly benefits at different start ages. It can show the effect of changing the future earnings assumption within the tool and give you a consistent starting point for household planning.
It cannot verify that every past employer reported correctly, predict your health or lifespan, determine the best claiming age for your household, or account for every source of retirement income. It also cannot make a dated figure current after SSA changes its rules or assumptions. Use it as an evidence-based projection, then make the broader decision using your complete financial situation and, where appropriate, qualified advice.
When to return to SSA for help
Use SSA’s current instructions when an earnings year is missing or wrong, when you cannot authenticate an account, when a mailed Statement does not arrive within the stated time frame, or when a non-covered pension may affect your benefits. The agency’s website is the authoritative place to confirm the current sign-in process, calculator versions, annual earnings limits, credit thresholds and correction requirements.
The Bottom Line
For the most reliable starting point, create or sign in to your personal my Social Security account, verify every earnings year, and compare the personalized estimates at age 62, your full retirement age and age 70 using the same dollar basis and future-income assumption. Treat 2026 figures and calculator versions as dated information, and use SSA’s specialized guidance for corrections or non-covered pensions.
