Your Public Provident Fund (PPF) account does not mature on the fifteenth calendar anniversary of its opening. It matures after 15 complete Indian financial years counted from the end of the financial year in which you opened it. To estimate the amount payable, you must then apply the notified interest rate to each month’s lowest eligible balance and stop the interest calculation at the end of the month before closure.
The maturity date can be worked out from the opening financial year in your passbook or account statement. An exact rupee amount, however, requires the account’s complete deposit, withdrawal and interest-credit history, the rates applicable in each period and the month in which you plan to close it. A generic online calculator cannot produce the official closure amount without those records.

What the PPF maturity rule actually counts
The National Savings Institute (NSI) describes the rule this way: “Account matures on completion of fifteen complete financial years from the end of the year in which the account was opened.” The relevant year is the Indian financial year, which runs from 1 April through 31 March. The account’s opening date is used to identify that financial year; the fifteenth anniversary on a calendar is not the test.
For example, an account opened at any point in FY 2010–11 belongs to the financial year ending 31 March 2011. Fifteen complete financial years counted from that year-end finish at the end of FY 2025–26, on 31 March 2026. This is an illustration of the official counting rule. Confirm the opening year recorded for your own account before relying on a date.

How to check your PPF maturity date
1. Find the recorded opening date or opening financial year
Check the first entry in your passbook, the account statement supplied by your bank or post office, or the account-office record. You need the year in which the account was opened, not merely the year of your first large deposit. If the records show both a date and a financial year, use the financial year recorded by the account office and retain the date as supporting evidence.
2. Convert the opening date to an Indian financial year
Dates from 1 April through 31 March belong to the financial year that starts in April. Thus, an opening on 20 March 2011 is in FY 2010–11, while an opening on 20 April 2011 is in FY 2011–12. Write the opening FY in the form “YYYY–YY”; this prevents an accidental calendar-year calculation.
3. Count fifteen complete financial years from that year’s end
Identify 31 March at the end of the opening FY, then count the next fifteen complete financial years. The year in which the fifteenth period ends is the maturity financial year. In a personal worksheet, record both entries: “opened in FY …” and “matures at the end of FY …”. Showing both makes the arithmetic auditable if the account office queries the date.
4. Check the result against the official account record
Take the calculated year to the bank or post-office account office, or compare it with the official account statement. The public rule establishes how the date is counted, but it cannot correct an incorrect opening date in a personal record, a transfer history or an account conversion. Ask the office to confirm the maturity status before submitting a closure or extension request.
How PPF interest is calculated for an amount estimate
PPF interest is based on monthly balance windows rather than on the balance shown only at the end of the financial year. For each calendar month, the eligible balance is the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and the end of that month. The government-notified annual rate for the relevant period is applied, and the resulting interest is credited at the end of the year. The PPF rules state: “Interest shall be credited to the account at the end of each year.”
Use the actual transaction ledger
Start with the opening balance and every transaction, including the date and amount of each deposit, withdrawal and interest credit. Do not substitute a guessed pattern such as one annual deposit or an assumed maximum contribution. A withdrawal can lower the eligible balance for the rest of its month, and a deposit made late in the month may not affect that month’s eligible window.

- Record the balance immediately after each transaction.
- Sort transactions by actual date, including transactions made on the fifth day.
- Keep each year’s interest credit as a separate transaction when reconciling the statement.
- Investigate any difference between your running balance and the official statement before estimating maturity proceeds.
Apply the fifth-day-to-month-end window
For each month, inspect the balance from after the close of 5th day through the last day of that month and select the lowest figure in that interval. A deposit made after the fifth may therefore fail to increase the interest-eligible balance for that month. A deposit made by the fifth can affect the month, subject to the balance shown throughout the eligible interval. The same window captures the effect of withdrawals.

For an estimate, calculate that month’s interest as the eligible balance multiplied by the annual rate for that period and divided by 12. Repeat for all twelve months, using the rate applicable to each month or rate period, then add the monthly results for the financial year. This method is a calculation aid; the account office’s ledger remains the authority for the credited amount.
Split the calculation whenever the notified rate changes
PPF rates are notified for periods and can change during the account’s life. Do not apply today’s rate to a fifteen-year history. The NSI rate table accessed in 2026 displays 7.1% per annum for PPF in each shown quarter of FY 2025–26 and FY 2026–27, through the quarter ending March 2027. That figure describes the displayed periods only; check the current NSI table before relying on it, and use the historical notified rate for earlier years.
In a spreadsheet, place the applicable annual rate beside every month or rate period. If a rate changes at a quarter boundary, calculate the months on either side separately. Label each rate with its financial year and quarter so a later reconciliation does not silently apply one rate to the whole account.
Account for year-end crediting and rounding
Interest is credited at the end of each year, not immediately after each monthly calculation. The scheme text also provides that fractional interest is rounded to a whole rupee at annual credit: 50 paise or more is rounded up and less than 50 paise is ignored. Keep the unrounded monthly figures in your working paper, total the year, and then apply that rounding rule to the annual amount. The credited whole-rupee figure becomes part of the subsequent account balance.

Assume, purely for illustration, that a month’s eligible balance is ₹100,000 and the applicable annual rate is 7.1%. The monthly estimate is ₹100,000 × 0.071 ÷ 12, or about ₹591.67. If the next month’s eligible balance is ₹120,000 at the same rate, the estimate is ₹710.00. The two-month subtotal is about ₹1,301.67 before any other months are added. You would repeat the process for every month in the financial year, add the complete-year total and round the annual credit under the scheme rule.

This example does not predict a reader’s maturity balance. It omits the remaining months, changing rates, deposits, withdrawals, prior interest credits and the closure adjustment. It shows only how the monthly window and annual rate interact.
How the planned closure month changes the amount due
For a matured account that you intend to close, due interest runs through the last day of the month before the closure month. A closure planned for 10 September therefore uses interest through 31 August for the closure estimate; September’s days are not added to the amount due under this rule.
- Determine the maturity financial year from the opening FY.
- Choose the intended closure month.
- Calculate monthly interest through the final day of the preceding month.
- Reconcile your estimate with the interest already credited and the account-office closure quote.
The closure month is essential information. Two otherwise identical accounts closed in different months can have different payable amounts because their final interest periods end at different points.

Records you need for a reliable estimate
Before treating a spreadsheet result as a decision figure, assemble the following:
- The opening date and the opening financial year recorded by the institution.
- The opening balance and every deposit date and amount.
- Every withdrawal date and amount, including partial withdrawals.
- Each annual interest credit shown in the passbook or statement.
- The government-notified rate applicable to each historical period.
- The month in which you plan to close the account.
If any of these is missing, describe the result as an estimate and identify the missing input. Do not present an assumed annual contribution pattern or a calculator’s generic maturity figure as the official amount due.
What you can do after the account matures
At maturity, the PPF scheme gives the account holder more than one path. The practical differences are whether new deposits are permitted, whether an election is required and how withdrawals work.

| Choice | Deposits after maturity | Election or timing requirement | Withdrawal treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close the account | No further deposits; the balance is withdrawn | Submit the closure request through the account office’s process | Due interest runs through the month preceding closure |
| Keep it open without further deposits | No further deposits | Keep the matured account under the scheme’s post-maturity conditions | One withdrawal is allowed in each year while it remains open, and it continues to earn the applicable scheme rate |
| Extend with deposits | Deposits may continue during a five-year extension block | Make the prescribed election within one year after maturity; confirm the current form and account-office procedure | Withdrawals are governed by the conditions applicable to the elected extension |
The five-year extension option is not automatic when you want to keep making deposits: the election must be made within one year of maturity. If you do nothing, do not assume that a later deposit will be treated as a valid extension election. Ask the account office which form and supporting documents it currently requires.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the fifteenth calendar anniversary
Problem: Counting fifteen years from the exact opening date can produce a date that does not match the scheme’s financial-year rule.
Fix: Convert the opening date to April–March FY notation, then count fifteen complete financial years from the end of that FY.
Applying one current rate to the entire history
Problem: PPF rates can change, so a single rate can overstate or understate a long-held account.
Fix: Divide the worksheet at every rate change and use the notified historical rate for each period. The NSI table’s 7.1% display for FY 2025–26 and FY 2026–27 does not establish the rate for earlier years.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Fix: Review the complete eligible interval from after the close of the fifth through month-end and use the lowest balance.
Adding interest for the closure month
Problem: Including the closure month in a projected payout can overstate the amount.
Fix: Stop the due-interest calculation on the last day of the month before closure, then ask the account office to reconcile the final figure.

Problem: Generic calculators usually require simplified assumptions and cannot see your ledger, historical rates or planned closure month.
Fix: Use a calculator only as a checking aid. Base a decision on the institution’s statement and closure quote after supplying the complete transaction history.
A practical worksheet sequence
- Write the opening FY exactly as shown in the account record.
- Mark the end of that FY and count fifteen complete FYs to identify the maturity FY.
- Enter every ledger transaction in date order and calculate a running balance.
- For each calendar month, identify the lowest balance after the fifth day through month-end.
- Attach the notified annual rate to each month or rate period and calculate the monthly estimate.
- Total each financial year, apply the annual whole-rupee rounding rule and reconcile the result to the credited interest.
- For a closure estimate, stop at the month-end immediately before the planned closure month.
- Take the worksheet and statement to the account office for the official maturity or closure confirmation.
Bottom line
Check the opening financial year, not the calendar anniversary: PPF maturity is reached after fifteen complete financial years from that year’s end. Estimate the balance month by month using the lowest balance after the fifth day, the rate notified for each historical period and the annual crediting and rounding rules. For closure, include interest only through the month before the closure month. Because the exact result depends on your ledger and chosen closure date, use your calculation to understand the account and the official statement or closure quote to establish the amount payable.
