How to Check Your Portfolio’s Exposure to AI Stocks

To find your portfolio’s AI-stock exposure, look through every ETF and mutual fund to the companies it owns, then add those indirect weights to any shares you hold directly. The calculation is only meaningful after you define what counts as an “AI stock,” record the holdings date, and decide how to treat cash, derivatives and short positions. A portfolio that appears diversified by fund ticker can still be concentrated in the same chip, cloud or software companies.

This guide gives a repeatable process: inventory your accounts, calculate position weights, download fund holdings, apply a stated AI rule, perform look-through math, and test the resulting concentration against a risk limit.

What does AI-stock exposure mean?

AI exposure is the share of your total portfolio value whose economic performance is linked to companies you classify as beneficiaries or suppliers of artificial-intelligence activity. It has two components:

  • Direct exposure: shares or other instruments that name a company in your account.
  • Look-through exposure: your proportional interest in companies held inside an ETF or mutual fund.

For example, owning 10% of your portfolio in a technology ETF does not automatically mean 10% AI exposure. If the ETF has 8% of its assets in a company that meets your AI rule, your indirect exposure through that position is 0.8% of the portfolio (10% × 8%).

How do I build a complete inventory of my investments?

Start with one worksheet covering taxable accounts, retirement plans, cash-management accounts and any other account that contributes to the portfolio you are evaluating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Export or transcribe each position from the custodian.
  2. Record the ticker or security identifier, vehicle type, market value, account, and the date of the price or valuation.
  3. Separate individual securities from ETFs, mutual funds, closed-end funds, options, futures, swaps and short positions.
  4. Add cash and cash equivalents as separate lines rather than silently omitting them.
  5. Choose whether the portfolio denominator includes every asset or only invested assets, and use that choice consistently.

Keep a copy of the original account statements. A fund’s published holdings date will usually differ from your account’s valuation date; do not imply that the two are simultaneous.

How do I calculate each position’s portfolio weight?

For a long position, divide its market value by the total portfolio market value:

position weight = position market value ÷ total portfolio market value

Multiply by 100 when displaying a percentage. If your portfolio totals $200,000 and a stock is worth $12,000, its weight is 6%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide how the denominator treats cash

Including cash answers “what percentage of everything I own is exposed to AI?” Excluding cash answers “what percentage of my invested assets is exposed?” Both are valid; label the choice at the top of the worksheet.

Handle shorts and derivatives explicitly

Do not mix a short position’s liability with a long position’s market value without an agreed convention. You can report gross long exposure, gross short exposure and net exposure in separate columns. For options, futures and swaps, use the instrument’s economic or notional exposure only when your statement or fund document provides a reliable figure, and identify whether it is a delta-adjusted or unadjusted amount. If the treatment is uncertain, mark it “not established” rather than presenting false precision.

What counts as an AI stock?

There is no universal definition. Morningstar reported that the largest U.S. and European AI funds shared only three holdings in their respective top 10 as of March 31, 2025. That divergence means a fund’s name or “AI” label cannot substitute for your rule.

Use an index-based rule

One transparent approach is to classify a company as AI-exposed when it is included by the AI index or benchmark you selected. Save the index methodology and the effective date with your worksheet. This is easy to reproduce, but it inherits the index provider’s judgment and rebalancing schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a business-role and revenue rule

Another approach is to require evidence that AI is material to the company. Morningstar’s methodology considers current companywide revenue, projected five-year revenue, the probability of a material increase in net profit, and the company’s role in the AI supply chain. You can adopt those factors as a screen, set your own thresholds, and document borderline cases.

Separate roles instead of using one bucket

Tag qualifying companies by value-chain role: semiconductors and equipment; cloud, data centers and networking; software platforms; and applications or automation. A broad technology holding may contain several roles, while a high-purity AI fund may emphasize only one. The tags help you see whether your “AI” risk is really a single industry bet.

How do I inspect an ETF or mutual fund’s actual holdings?

Open the fund issuer’s latest holdings file, prospectus and shareholder report. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov says most ETFs post portfolio holdings on their websites daily and advises investors to inspect actual holdings and fund documents. The file’s “as of” date matters: a daily ETF file, a monthly report and a semiannual shareholder report describe different snapshots.

  1. Find the fund’s official holdings page and download the machine-readable file when available.
  2. Capture the file date, total net assets, security names, tickers or identifiers, and each holding’s percentage or market value.
  3. Read the prospectus for the investment objective, index methodology, derivatives policy, sampling approach and geographic scope.
  4. Use the shareholder report to identify turnover, material changes and positions that may not appear in a simplified webpage view.
  5. Normalize names and identifiers so the same company is not counted twice because one file uses a depositary receipt, a local listing or a different share class.

Investor.gov also warns that different indexes may include the same securities or assign them unexpected weights. Therefore, owning several “diversified” funds does not prove that your underlying companies are diversified.

How do I calculate look-through AI exposure?

For each qualifying company inside a fund, multiply your fund weight in the portfolio by the company’s weight inside that fund:

look-through company weight = portfolio weight of fund × company weight in fund

Then add any direct position in that same company:

combined company exposure = direct company weight + all look-through company weights

Worked example

Assume a $200,000 portfolio owns $30,000 (15%) of Fund A and $10,000 (5%) of Fund B, plus $4,000 (2%) directly in Company X. The funds’ dated holdings files show Company X at 8% and 3%, respectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Source Portfolio weight Company X weight inside source Look-through weight
Fund A 15% 8% 1.20%
Fund B 5% 3% 0.15%
Direct Company X 2% 100% 2.00%
Combined Company X exposure 3.35%

The direct 2% holding alone understates the economic exposure. Apply the same calculation to every qualifying company, not only the largest one.

Check that fund weights add up

Published holdings may exclude cash, accrued income, derivatives or securities that were added after the file’s cutoff. Compare the sum of reported weights with the document’s stated net assets and note any residual. Do not force the rows to total 100% by inventing an allocation.

How can I find duplicated exposure across funds?

Create a company-level table with one row per normalized issuer and one column for each fund and direct account. Sum each row to obtain combined exposure, then sort from largest to smallest. This reveals duplication that is invisible at the fund level.

Look for concentration by value-chain role

After the company calculation, sum rows tagged as chips, cloud and data centers, software, or applications and automation. Two funds may hold different names yet depend on the same role, such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment or hyperscale data-center spending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the latest concentration evidence carefully

Morningstar reported in 2025 that almost nine out of every 10 AI and big-data funds held Nvidia. That is a broad fund-universe statistic, not a forecast and not a statement about any particular fund’s current weight. The European Securities and Markets Authority reported that, as of June 2024, more than 50% of EU fund market value invested in AI companies was concentrated in the largest companies, including six of the Magnificent Seven. These figures illustrate why a fund count can look diversified while company-level exposure remains top-heavy.

Compare the result with a personal limit

Set a maximum for any one company and for each value-chain role before you review the result. If a combined weight exceeds your limit, possible responses include reducing a direct holding, replacing an overlapping fund, directing new contributions elsewhere, or accepting the concentration with a written reason and review date. The calculation does not tell you which response is suitable; it makes the trade-off visible.

How should I compare two portfolios or funds?

Use the same holdings date and the same AI rule for both. Compare the following measures rather than relying on the product name.

Measure What to calculate or inspect Why it matters
Direct versus look-through AI weight Direct qualifying securities separately from indirect fund exposure Shows whether the risk comes from stock picking or fund ownership
Largest-constituent concentration Combined weight of the top one, five and ten companies Reveals dependence on a few issuers
Fund overlap Number and weight of issuers appearing in multiple funds Identifies duplicated bets
AI definition and purity Index rule or revenue/business-role test; share of holdings that qualify Distinguishes broad technology exposure from high-purity AI exposure
Holdings date and reporting frequency Daily, monthly, quarterly or semiannual; date of each file Indicates how current the comparison is
Fees, liquidity and geography Prospectus expense ratio, trading liquidity and regional allocation Shows costs, implementation risk and geographic dependence

If one fund reports a current daily file and another only a dated quarterly report, state that limitation beside the comparison rather than treating the weights as contemporaneous.

What should my spreadsheet contain?

A simple workbook can make the calculation auditable without requiring special software. Use separate tabs for account inventory, fund holdings, classification and results.

  • Account inventory: account, identifier, vehicle type, market value, valuation date, long/short flag and denominator treatment.
  • Fund holdings: fund, holdings date, issuer identifier, issuer name, fund weight, source document and value-chain role.
  • Classification: issuer, AI rule applied, qualifying yes/no, evidence, role and review date.
  • Results: direct weight, each fund’s look-through contribution, combined issuer weight, role total and limit status.

Use identifiers rather than names as the primary key, retain the original downloaded files, and add a “last reviewed” field. A formula error is easier to find when every contribution can be traced back to one dated source row.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Counting fund labels instead of holdings: an “AI,” technology or innovation label does not establish a common definition.
  • Adding fund and direct percentages: direct holdings must be combined with the fund’s look-through contribution, not with the fund’s entire portfolio weight.
  • Using stale or mismatched dates: write the holdings date beside every fund weight and the account valuation date beside every position.
  • Ignoring share classes or listings: normalize identifiers so the same issuer is not split into artificial rows.
  • Forcing incomplete files to 100%: disclose cash, derivatives, residuals and omitted securities.
  • Calling every technology company AI: apply one stated index or business-materiality rule and record exceptions.
  • Looking only at company names: role-level totals can expose a common dependence even when issuers differ.
  • Assuming current exposure is permanent: rebalance dates, price moves, creations and redemptions can change weights after publication.

How often should I repeat the analysis?

Repeat it after a major trade, a fund rebalance, a large market move, a change in an index methodology, or a material company announcement. For a monitoring schedule, use the reporting frequency available for each fund: daily holdings can be checked monthly, while funds with quarterly or semiannual files require a review tied to the new report. Keep prior snapshots so you can distinguish a portfolio change from a reporting-date change.

When a fund changes its objective, index or derivatives policy, re-run the AI classification rather than carrying forward the old result. A new rule can alter exposure even if you made no trades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an index fund make my portfolio more concentrated in AI without my buying an AI fund?

Yes. A broad-market or sector index can hold large AI suppliers or users, and another fund may hold the same issuers. Only a look-through, issuer-level calculation shows the combined weight created by those overlapping holdings.

What if an ETF’s holdings file is several weeks old?

Use the file, but label the result with its exact as-of date and treat it as an estimate of that earlier portfolio. Avoid presenting the weight as current; wait for a newer file or use the fund’s stated reporting schedule to set a review date.

Should I classify a company as AI-exposed if it only buys AI tools?

That depends on your rule. A revenue-and-business-role test can exclude routine users whose AI activity is immaterial, while an index rule may include them; record the decision and apply it consistently across every issuer.

How do taxes affect an AI-exposure decision?

The exposure calculation is separate from the transaction decision. In a taxable account, compare any proposed sale with your cost basis, holding period and tax consequences; you can also reduce concentration by directing new contributions or changing future purchases instead of selling immediately.
