Have your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), filing status, tax year, and exact whole-dollar refund amount ready if you use the tracker without signing in. The correct tool and waiting period depend on how you filed, which year you filed, and whether the return is a standard individual return.
This guide covers U.S. federal refunds first. State refunds must be checked with the relevant state revenue or taxation agency. India uses a separate Income Tax Department system, and its detailed steps and timing should not be inferred from the IRS process.

What you need before checking a U.S. federal refund
The IRS tracker verifies the return using information already on the filed return. Gather these four items exactly as they appear on that return:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- SSN or ITIN
- Filing status, such as single, married filing jointly, or head of household
- Tax year
- Exact refund amount in whole dollars
Use the taxpayer’s own details, not information from a different year or a different return. An incorrect filing status or a refund amount rounded differently from the return can prevent the tracker from finding your record. Keep a copy of the filed return nearby so you can transcribe the amount and status accurately.
#1 Best Overall
If you sign in to an IRS online account instead, the account can display refund status and other tax records without entering the tracker’s full set of return details each time. An account is particularly useful when you want to review more than one piece of federal tax information. Follow the identity-verification prompts shown by the IRS and use the account belonging to the taxpayer whose return is being checked.
How to check your income tax return status and refund
Option 1: Use the IRS Where’s My Refund? tracker
- Open the IRS Where’s My Refund? service.
- Enter your SSN or ITIN, filing status, tax year, and exact whole-dollar refund amount.
- Submit the request and read the status shown for that return.
- Record any personalized refund date or instruction displayed.
- Return to the tracker only after the appropriate availability window if no record appears.
The tracker normally shows one of three processing stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, or Refund Sent. A status can remain unchanged while the IRS performs ordinary processing or additional checks. Once the IRS processes the return and approves the refund, the service provides a personalized refund date when one is available. “Refund Approved” means the IRS has authorized the payment; it does not necessarily mean the money has already appeared in your bank account or that a mailed check has arrived.
Option 2: Sign in to an IRS online account
An IRS online account can show refund status along with tax records. This route is useful when you want a broader view of your federal tax information or do not have the exact refund amount immediately available for the tracker. Use the account associated with the taxpayer whose return you are checking and follow the identity-verification prompts presented by the IRS. The account does not change the IRS processing timetable; it is another way to view information held by the agency.

Option 3: Use the IRS mobile app
The IRS mobile app provides an official way to check refund information from a phone. It uses the same underlying federal return records as the IRS’s other digital channels, so the filing details and timing rules still apply. If the app does not yet show a return, first compare the date you filed with the IRS availability window for your filing method.
Option 4: Call the automated refund hotline
The IRS automated refund hotline is 800-829-1954. Have the same identifying information used by the online tracker available before calling. Automated information can be limited compared with an online account, particularly when a return needs correction or additional review. A phone result that says the return is still processing is not, by itself, evidence that the IRS denied the refund.
When your refund information should appear
The IRS gives different availability windows based on the filing method and return year. The current IRS Refunds and Where’s My Refund? guidance describes the following general points at which a return can generally be checked. They are not guarantees that processing is complete or that a payment will arrive on a particular day.
| Return and filing method | When status can generally be checked | Typical processing estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year return filed electronically | About 24 hours after e-filing | About 3 weeks from e-filing |
| Prior-year return filed electronically | About 3 or 4 days after e-filing | Timing varies with the return and any review |
| Return mailed on paper | About 4 weeks after mailing | 6 or more weeks from the IRS’s receipt of the mailed return |
The IRS’s typical timing estimates are measured from e-filing or from receipt of a mailed return. A mailed return’s arrival date is not always the same as the date it was posted. Keep mailing or delivery evidence if you need to establish when the IRS could have received the return, but do not treat a postal date as the IRS receipt date.

- Compact for travelling
Electronic filing generally makes a return visible sooner than paper filing, but it does not eliminate review. The IRS estimates about three weeks from e-filing for a typical refund and six or more weeks from its receipt of a mailed return. Corrections, missing information, identity checks, or other review can extend the wait beyond these estimates. These figures are estimates from the IRS’s current guidance, not a promised payment date.
How to read each IRS status
Return Received
This status means the IRS has received the return into its processing system. It is not an approval and does not establish a payment date. The return may still be checked for arithmetic, eligibility, identity, or other issues. Keep checking only at reasonable intervals; repeatedly submitting the same information will not accelerate processing.
Refund Approved
The IRS has completed the relevant processing and approved a refund. The tracker normally supplies a projected refund date at this point. The date is a processing estimate, so a bank posting time or a mailed-check delivery time can be later. Approval also does not rule out a later reduction for an eligible offset, which may be explained in a notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
Refund Sent
The IRS has sent the payment. For direct deposit, allow time for the financial institution to post it. For a paper check, allow for postal delivery. If the payment does not arrive after the applicable processing and delivery period, use the IRS’s refund-trace instructions rather than submitting a second return. Filing another return can create a separate problem and will not replace the trace process.
Why a refund can be delayed
A missing status or a long pause does not by itself mean the refund was denied. Common causes identified by the IRS include:
- A forgotten signature on a paper return
- Math or data-entry errors that require correction
- Additional identity or eligibility review
- An amended return or an injured-spouse-relief request that needs separate processing
- Credits that are subject to special timing rules
Read every IRS notice carefully. A notice may ask for information, explain a correction, or tell you that a refund was applied to a debt. Until you receive such an instruction, compare your entries with the filed return and allow the normal processing period to pass.
Earned Income Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit
By law, the IRS must hold refunds that include the Earned Income Credit until at least mid-February. The Additional Child Tax Credit can require additional review, so a return claiming it may take longer than a straightforward return even when it was filed electronically. The credit-related hold is a timing rule, not a message that the claim was rejected.

What to do when the tracker does not change
- Confirm that you selected the correct tax year and filing status.
- Re-enter the refund amount exactly as a whole-dollar figure shown on the return. Do not substitute the amount from a different calculation or year.
- Check that enough time has passed for your filing method: approximately 24 hours for a current-year e-file, 3 or 4 days for a prior-year e-file, or 4 weeks for a paper return.
- If the return is still within the IRS’s normal estimate, continue checking periodically rather than filing another return.
- If the estimate has passed or the IRS requests information, follow the notice or contact route supplied by the IRS.
Switching between the tracker, app, and account does not create a new return record. Those channels report the same federal processing information, so a delay appearing in all of them usually means the return is still processing or requires action.
When the refund amount is smaller than expected
The federal government can reduce a refund to collect certain past-due debts. Possible offsets include past-due child support, federal agency nontax debt, and state income tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails an offset notice explaining the action. Read that notice before contacting the IRS, because the agency that received the offset may be the appropriate place to dispute the debt.
An offset is different from an ordinary processing correction. The tracker may show that a refund was approved or sent even though the amount arriving is lower than the amount shown on the original return. Keep the notice with your tax records and use the contact information in it for questions about the debt or the amount taken.
How to trace a missing mailed check
First verify that the IRS has reached the end of the applicable processing period and that the tracker says the refund was sent. If a mailed check is lost or stolen, use the IRS refund-trace process. A trace locates or replaces a payment; it does not accelerate normal processing while the return is still under review.
The available route depends on filing status. The IRS lists tracker, app, and phone options for some filing statuses. Married taxpayers who filed jointly may be directed to a phone process or Form 3911. Follow the route the IRS specifies for your filing status rather than sending a form prematurely. Keep the address used on the return and any payment details available when starting a trace.
Returns that need a different checker
Amended individual returns
Where’s My Refund? does not display Form 1040-X amended-return refund information. Use the IRS Where’s My Amended Return? service instead and follow its separate timing and status instructions. Entering the original return into the ordinary refund tracker will not show the amended-return progress.
Business and other non-Form 1040 returns
Refund information for business returns and returns other than Form 1040 uses a separate IRS phone route. The individual tracker is not a universal checker for every federal return type. Identify the form that was filed before choosing a contact method; an individual SSN-based search may not apply to a business return.

State income-tax returns
Each state operates its own refund system. USAGov directs taxpayers to the revenue or taxation agency website for the state where the return was filed. Do not enter a state return’s details into the federal IRS tracker and assume that a federal status is a state status. A federal refund can be approved while a state refund is still processing, or the reverse, because the agencies use separate systems.
India: use the Income Tax Department system instead
Taxpayers in India should use the official Income Tax Department’s Check Refund Status help page, its linked video, and the Refund Status User Manual. The department also publishes e-Filing and Centralized Processing Center contact information. Those resources are separate from the IRS and use their own account requirements, status language, and timelines.
The official material identified for this guide establishes that the India portal and manual exist, but it does not establish a verified login sequence, status labels, or processing timetable here. Use the instructions displayed in that system and do not substitute the U.S. SSN, filing-status, refund-amount, or IRS timing rules. If the portal directs you to the e-Filing or Centralized Processing Center contact route, use that route rather than an IRS number.
Compare the route by filing method, year, and return type
Three questions determine which checker is appropriate: How was the return filed? Which tax year is it? What kind of return is it? A current-year e-filed Form 1040, a prior-year e-filed return, and a paper return may all use the same federal tracker but become visible at different times. An amended, business, state, or Indian return requires a different official resource.
| Your situation | Official route | Key timing or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year U.S. individual e-file | IRS Where’s My Refund?, IRS online account, mobile app, or automated hotline | Generally check after 24 hours; typical processing estimate is about 3 weeks |
| Prior-year U.S. individual e-file | IRS Where’s My Refund?, IRS online account, mobile app, or automated hotline | Generally check after 3 or 4 days |
| U.S. individual paper return | IRS Where’s My Refund?, IRS online account, mobile app, or automated hotline | Generally check after 4 weeks; typical estimate is 6 or more weeks from IRS receipt |
| Form 1040-X amended return | IRS Where’s My Amended Return? | Not displayed in Where’s My Refund? |
| Business or other non-Form 1040 federal return | Separate IRS phone route for that return type | Individual tracker does not apply |
| U.S. state return | The state revenue or taxation agency | Use the agency for the state where you filed |
| Indian income-tax return | India Income Tax Department refund-status resources | Follow the department’s current manual and portal instructions |
Common mistakes that prevent a useful status result
- Checking immediately after filing instead of waiting the stated availability period.
- Choosing a prior-year return when the current-year return was filed, or vice versa.
- Using the status from a different filing status, such as selecting single for a married-filing-jointly return.
- Entering an estimated or rounded refund instead of the exact whole-dollar amount on the filed return.
- Using Where’s My Refund? for Form 1040-X, a business return, or a state return.
- Treating “Refund Approved” as proof that a bank has already posted the funds.
- Filing a second return because the first one has not moved to the next status.
- Starting a refund trace before the IRS shows that the payment was sent and the applicable period has passed.
Practical checklist before contacting anyone
- Identify the country, and for a U.S. return identify federal versus state.
- Identify the return type: standard individual, amended, business, or another form.
- Record the tax year and filing method.
- Keep the filed return nearby for the exact refund amount and filing status.
- Wait through the applicable status-availability window.
- Use only an official tax-authority account, tracker, app, or phone number.
- Write down the status and any personalized date displayed.
- Keep any IRS or Bureau of the Fiscal Service notice, because it may identify a correction, offset, or requested action.
- If a check is missing, confirm that the tracker says “Refund Sent” before beginning the appropriate trace process.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How soon can I check a current-year federal e-filed return?
The IRS generally makes a current-year e-filed return available in Where’s My Refund? about 24 hours after filing. That is the time when status may appear, not a promise that the refund will be approved or paid.
What information does the IRS refund tracker require?
For the no-sign-in tracker, have the taxpayer’s SSN or ITIN, filing status, tax year, and exact whole-dollar refund amount from the filed return. A mismatch in any of these details can prevent a result.

No. It means the IRS authorized the refund and normally provides a projected refund date. A financial institution may post a direct deposit later, and a mailed check requires delivery time.

Why has my Earned Income Credit refund not arrived yet?
Federal law requires the IRS to hold refunds that include the Earned Income Credit until at least mid-February. The Additional Child Tax Credit may also require extra review.
Can I use Where’s My Refund? for Form 1040-X?
No. Form 1040-X amended-return refund information is handled through the IRS Where’s My Amended Return? service, not the ordinary refund tracker.
How do I check a state income-tax refund?
Use the revenue or taxation agency website for the state where you filed. State refunds are separate from federal IRS refunds and do not appear in the federal tracker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I do if the refund amount was reduced?
Look for an offset notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Possible offsets include past-due child support, federal agency nontax debt, and state income tax. The agency named in the notice may handle disputes.
What if my mailed refund check is lost?
Wait until the IRS shows that the refund was sent and the applicable processing and delivery period has passed. Then follow the IRS refund-trace route for your filing status; married joint filers may be directed to a phone process or Form 3911.
Can the same IRS return show different information in the app and online tracker?
The app, tracker, and online account report the same federal processing records. Differences in when a channel refreshes can occur, but switching channels does not create a new return record or speed processing.
How do taxpayers in India check a refund?
Use the official India Income Tax Department Check Refund Status page, linked video, and Refund Status User Manual. Do not apply the IRS login fields, status labels, or timing rules to an Indian return.
