To see filing information for a GSTIN or UIN, use Search Taxpayer and its filing table. To check your own return workflow, sign in and open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. For money paid through a bank, use Track Payment Status and, when available, Challan History; then verify successful bank confirmation and the credit in the Electronic Cash Ledger (GST PMT-05). A challan that was generated but not paid is not proof that tax reached the government.
The GST portal exposes two different kinds of evidence: evidence that a return was submitted, and evidence that funds were received and credited. Checking one does not establish the other. Use the route that matches the proof you need, and use both routes when you need to establish that a return was filed and the related payment was completed.

| What is the status of my own return period or form? | Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard after signing in | Your account’s return workflow for the selected financial year and filing period. The documented GSTR-7 flow shows an ARN and a “Filed” status after successful filing. |
| Has the bank reported a payment? | Track Payment Status | A payment status obtained from the bank, including cases where the GST system does not yet show the status. |
| What payment challans are associated with my account? | Challan History after signing in | Challan records available in the account. A challan record alone does not prove that the bank processed the payment. |
| Did the money reach the GST account? | Check bank confirmation and the Electronic Cash Ledger (GST PMT-05) | Successful bank confirmation followed by ledger credit is the evidence of completed payment for an online net-banking transaction. |

Check GST return filing status by GSTIN or UIN
The public filing lookup is the quickest way to establish whether a taxpayer has filing records for a selected year. GSTN’s Search Taxpayer manual documents the following path.
1. Open Search Taxpayer
Go to the official GST Portal homepage and select Search Taxpayer. The feature is available before login and after login, so a public lookup does not require you to open your own account session.
2. Enter the identifier and captcha
Enter the taxpayer’s GSTIN or UIN in the requested field, type the displayed captcha, and select Search. Check the identifier carefully before submitting; a single incorrect character can return the wrong taxpayer or no matching record.

What changes after login
The logged-in view provides additional taxpayer profile information. It also lets you use the signed-in Returns Dashboard to inspect your own filing period and form workflow. Do not assume that the public table and the account workflow contain identical fields: they serve different purposes.
Check your own return from Returns Dashboard
When you are checking a return filed from your own account, sign in and use Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard. GSTN’s GSTR-7 manual documents this route for that form.

- Select the filing period.
- Search to load the return workflow for that period.
For the documented GSTR-7 process, successful submission displays an ARN (Acknowledgement Reference Number) and changes that form’s status to “Filed”. Treat that as a form-specific example from the official manual, not a promise that every GST return uses exactly the same screens, wording or milestones. Other return types can present different fields or steps.
An ARN and a “Filed” status answer the filing question: the portal recorded a successful submission in that workflow. They do not, by themselves, prove that a separate challan was paid or that money was credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger.
How to interpret return results without confusing them with payment
“Filed” is a submission result
A displayed filing status, including the documented GSTR-7 “Filed” status, indicates the return submission outcome in the return workflow. Keep the ARN with your records when the portal supplies one, because it identifies that submission in the account workflow.

The filing table is not a cash-ledger statement
Search Taxpayer’s filing table is designed to show filing details. It is not the place to establish whether a bank transfer settled, whether a challan was consumed, or whether a cash-ledger balance increased. Those questions require the payment-status and ledger evidence.
Use the correct financial year and period
The filing table requires a financial-year selection, while Returns Dashboard requires a financial year and filing period. A result for the wrong year or period can look like a missing filing even when the return belongs to another selection.
Check GST payment status on the portal
Payment status can come from the bank even when the GST system has not yet populated its own status. GSTN’s Known Issues & Suggested Solutions document identifies two relevant routes: Track Payment Status and, for signed-in users, Challan History.
1. Use Track Payment Status when the GST system has no status
Open Track Payment Status and submit the payment details requested by the portal. GSTN added this function for situations in which payment status is not available in the GST system, allowing the portal to obtain the status available from the bank.
2. Check Challan History when you are signed in
Sign in and open Challan History to review the challan records available to your account. This is a record lookup, not a substitute for bank confirmation and ledger credit.

3. Confirm the bank transaction
For a net-banking payment, look for a successful confirmation from the bank. GSTN’s Online Payments Modes instructions state that successful bank confirmation credits the amount instantly to the Electronic Cash Ledger, identified as GST PMT-05.
4. Confirm the Electronic Cash Ledger credit
After the bank reports success, check that the amount appears as a credit in the Electronic Cash Ledger. The bank confirmation and the corresponding ledger credit together provide the payment-completion evidence. If the bank reports success but the ledger does not show the credit, keep both records and use Track Payment Status to check the bank-reported status again.
Challan created versus payment completed
Creating a challan records a payment request. It does not establish that the selected bank processed the transaction. GSTN’s Welcome Kit for New Taxpayers explains challan creation, payment modes and the subsequent ledger-credit step.
| Evidence you see | What it means | What you still need for payment proof |
|---|---|---|
| Challan generated | A payment request was created. | Bank processing confirmation and the corresponding GST PMT-05 credit. |
| Challan listed in Challan History | The account can display the challan record. | Evidence that the bank accepted the transaction and the cash ledger was credited. |
| Bank reports successful payment | The bank has confirmed the transaction. | Verify the amount is credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger. |
| Amount appears in GST PMT-05 | The GST cash ledger reflects the credit. | Retain the bank confirmation and ledger entry with the relevant return records. |
Do not tell a tax officer, client or accounts colleague that tax was paid solely because a challan number exists. Describe it as “challan generated” until the bank and ledger checks are complete.

Challan History is unavailable for a cancelled GSTIN
GSTN’s known-issues guidance says a cancelled GSTIN may not have access to Challan History. In that situation, use Track Payment Status as the indicated route for checking the bank-reported payment status.
The payment option does not connect to the selected bank
GSTN advises that the bank’s site may be experiencing an issue. If the connection problem persists, contact the selected bank. Keep the attempted payment details and any bank message so that you can distinguish a bank-connection failure from a completed transaction.
The bank says success but the ledger credit is not visible
Do not treat the challan alone as proof, and do not repeat the payment merely because the ledger view is delayed. First preserve the successful bank confirmation, check Track Payment Status, and look again for the GST PMT-05 credit. The decisive records are the bank status and the ledger entry, not the existence of the challan.
A practical evidence checklist
- For filing proof: the GSTIN or UIN used, the selected financial year, the filing-table result, and—when using the signed-in workflow—the ARN and displayed form status.
- For payment proof: the challan record, bank confirmation of success, the amount and transaction details shown by the bank, and the corresponding Electronic Cash Ledger (GST PMT-05) credit.
- For a mismatch: screenshots or downloaded records showing the filing status, Track Payment Status result, bank response and ledger entry, each tied to the same financial year, filing period and payment.
Keeping the filing and payment evidence together prevents a common accounting mistake: treating a “Filed” return as proof of tax payment, or treating a generated challan as proof that the return was filed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only one status: return filing and payment are separate checks. Complete both when your question concerns both obligations.
- Using the public lookup for an account workflow: Search Taxpayer is useful for public filing information, while Returns Dashboard is the signed-in route for your own return period and form.
- Skipping the financial-year selection: the filing table result depends on the year you select; Returns Dashboard also requires the filing period.
- Calling a challan a paid tax receipt: a generated challan is a payment request, not confirmation of bank settlement.
- Assuming every form has identical screens: the ARN and “Filed” sequence is documented for GSTR-7. Labels and milestones can differ by return type.
- Ignoring a cancelled-GSTIN limitation: Challan History may be unavailable, so use Track Payment Status for the bank-reported result.
- Repeating a payment after a connection error: first determine whether the bank processed the original attempt. A connection failure at the portal does not, by itself, establish that money was or was not debited.
Which route should you use?
| Your situation | First check | Second check or confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| You need a public filing lookup for another GSTIN or UIN. | Search Taxpayer, then Show Filing Table. | Choose the financial year and review the filing details. |
| You need your own return’s workflow status. | Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard after login. | Review the selected filing period and any ARN or form status shown. |
| A payment is missing from the GST system. | Track Payment Status. | Compare the result with the bank’s confirmation. |
| You are signed in and want to review payment records. | Challan History. | Verify bank success and the GST PMT-05 credit. |
| The GSTIN is cancelled and Challan History cannot be opened. | Track Payment Status. | Use the bank result and ledger evidence where available. |
What counts as a complete answer?
You have a complete filing answer when the correct GSTIN or UIN, financial year and filing record are visible in Search Taxpayer, or when your signed-in Returns Dashboard shows the relevant form workflow and, where documented for that form, an ARN with a “Filed” status. You have a complete payment answer when the bank reports a successful transaction and the same amount is credited to the Electronic Cash Ledger (GST PMT-05). If either side is missing, label the record precisely—such as “return filed; payment status pending” or “challan generated; bank completion not confirmed”—rather than treating the two statuses as interchangeable.
