How to Check Your Federal Income Tax Return Status and Respond to an IRS Notice (2026 Guide)

Use the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tool to see refund progress, and use your IRS online account for broader return and account information. If you received a notice, follow that notice—not a generic internet deadline—because the notice number, issuer, requested documents, response method and due date control what you must do.

“Filing status” can mean several different things. You may be asking whether the IRS received or processed your return, where a refund is, or how to deal with a letter that changed or questioned your account. The correct federal channel depends on which of those questions you have. A state tax notice must be handled with the state tax agency that issued it, not with the IRS.

The IRS does not provide one public dashboard that answers every filing-status question. Start with the question you actually need answered.

Do not order a transcript merely to make a return process faster. A transcript can be useful when you need a record, but it is not a shortcut for IRS processing.

How to check a federal refund with Where’s My Refund?

Where’s My Refund? is a refund-status tool, not a universal return-status dashboard. It reports whether the IRS has recorded the return for refund purposes and whether the refund has been approved or sent. The IRS says the tool generally updates once a day.

Have the exact information the tool asks for

  • Your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  • The filing status shown on the return, such as single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household or qualifying surviving spouse.
  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars, as entered on the return. Do not round a different amount or enter the amount of a payment you made.

Enter the information exactly as filed. A mismatch can prevent the tool from finding the return even when the IRS has received it.

Wait the appropriate amount of time before checking

How the return was filed When refund status is generally available Qualification
Current-year return filed electronically After about 24 hours This is the IRS’s general availability guidance, not a promise that every return will appear at that time.
Prior-year return filed electronically After 3 or 4 days The interval is measured from electronic filing and can vary by account circumstances.
Paper return After about 4 weeks Paper returns take longer to enter into IRS systems, so the tracker may not show information immediately.

Checking before the applicable interval has passed can simply produce no usable status. Once the return is in the system, the page normally refreshes daily rather than continuously.

Understand the three status stages

  1. Return Received: The IRS has received the return and recorded it in the refund process. This does not mean the refund has been approved.
  2. Refund Approved: The IRS has approved the refund amount shown for that return. Approval still is not the same as money being delivered to your bank or mailed to you.
  3. Refund Sent: The IRS has sent the refund. Delivery timing then depends on the payment method and financial institution or mail service.

“Return Received” is therefore not a final decision. If the tracker remains at that stage, the return has not reached the approved or sent stages shown by the tool.

How long a refund usually takes

In Tax Tip 2026-33, the Internal Revenue Service states that it issues most refunds in less than 21 days. That is a typical timeframe, not a guarantee for an individual return. The 21-day statement does not override the initial availability intervals above, and it does not create a deadline by which every refund must be paid.

When the refund tracker is not enough

Use an IRS online account when your question concerns more than the progress of a refund. The account is the broader route for tax records and other account details. It can be the appropriate place to look when you need information about account activity rather than one refund’s three-stage status.

The IRS mobile app and automated telephone services are additional ways to check refund information. They use the same basic identity and return details and are alternatives to the web tracker, not replacements for the notice-specific process described below.

If you are checking because you received a letter, do not assume that a refund-status screen will explain the letter. A notice can concern income, credits, payments or another account issue even when a refund status is available.

You received a notice: identify it before responding

“I got a notice from the IRS” is not enough information to determine what to do. IRS notices differ substantially, and a state or another agency may have sent the letter instead. Work through these identification steps before sending anything.

1. Confirm the issuer and return address

Read the letterhead, return address and contact information. An IRS notice should identify the Internal Revenue Service. A state department of revenue or another agency must be answered through that agency’s process. Do not send a state response to the IRS merely because the subject is income tax.

2. Find the notice number

Look for a code beginning with CP or LTR, usually near the top or in the header. Record the complete number and any revision or tax-year information. The number lets you locate the explanation and keeps your response tied to the correct issue.

3. Read the explanation and requested action

Identify what the agency says is different from your return or account. Note every document requested, the tax period involved, the amount at issue and whether the letter asks you to agree, disagree, pay, provide information or call.

4. Mark the notice’s deadline

The due date printed on the letter controls. There is no single IRS notice deadline. A late or incomplete response can lead to additional charges, an unfavorable account adjustment or loss of an appeal opportunity, depending on the notice.

5. List only the response methods the notice allows

Some notices provide a telephone number; some allow mail, an online upload or more than one option. The available method can depend on the notice and on whether the IRS has requested particular documents. Follow the instructions printed on your notice rather than selecting a method that appears convenient but is not listed.

Examples of different notice deadlines and issues

Two IRS notices illustrate why a generic “respond within 30 days” rule is unsafe.

CP05B: income verification

A CP05B concerns an income discrepancy and asks the taxpayer to send supporting documentation by the date shown on the notice. The letter’s date—not a standard period copied from another notice—is the deadline to use. Gather the specific records requested and use the submission method identified in that CP05B communication.

CP267: payment or credit applied differently

A CP267 addresses a situation in which credits or payments were applied differently from what the taxpayer claimed. Its instructions say to contact the IRS within 30 days if you dispute how the payment was applied. That 30-day instruction belongs to CP267; it should not be treated as the deadline for every IRS notice.

How to prepare a complete response

  1. Make a copy of the notice. Keep the complete letter, including any page with a response coupon or address.
  2. Compare the notice with your return and records. Check the tax year, line or item mentioned, amounts, withholding statements, payment confirmations and prior correspondence.
  3. Decide whether you agree or disagree. If the notice is correct, follow its payment or information instructions. If it is wrong, prepare a concise explanation identifying the specific error.
  4. Include the requested support. Attach readable copies of the documents the notice asks for, such as income or payment records. Do not substitute unrelated paperwork simply because it is easier to obtain.
  5. Use the exact submission route. Mail to the address printed on the notice, call the listed number, or use the permitted upload service if the notice offers it.
  6. Keep a submission record. Retain your copy, the documents sent and practical evidence of when and how you submitted them, such as a postal receipt or upload confirmation. This is sound recordkeeping practice, even when the notice does not expressly require a particular proof.

Write your name, taxpayer identification number and notice number where the notice instructs you to do so. If the notice supplies a payment or response stub, include it as directed; do not remove information that helps the IRS match the response to your account.

Secure ways to send information

Email is generally not the response channel

The IRS says not to respond to a notice by email unless an IRS employee is already involved in an authenticated, ongoing interaction and specifically requests email. A normal notice does not authorize you to invent an email route or send tax documents to an address found elsewhere.

Use the IRS Document Upload Tool only when the notice supports it

Some notices provide access to the IRS Document Upload Tool. Select the exact notice in the tool and submit only the documents requested. The IRS instructions say not to upload an original tax return through that tool. If your notice does not identify the tool or provide its required access information, use the mailing, phone or other method printed on the notice instead.

Mail or telephone when those are the listed options

Use the notice’s address, not a general IRS address copied from another matter. If a call is required, have the notice, return and supporting records available so you can answer account-verification questions and describe the issue precisely.

If you disagree with the IRS notice

A disagreement is strongest when it addresses the exact statement in the notice. State what is incorrect, explain why, identify the return line or payment involved and attach the records that prove the correction. Follow any form, signature or representative requirements printed in the letter.

Do not send a completely new return unless the notice tells you to. A notice response is usually a targeted explanation and supporting documentation; replacing the entire return can create a separate filing problem. If an amended return or another specific form is required, the notice or a qualified adviser can tell you so.

Continue to observe the original deadline while seeking clarification. Calling for information does not automatically extend a due date unless the IRS gives you an extension or other relief under the notice’s rules.

What happens if you ignore the notice?

Ignoring a notice can allow the IRS’s proposed adjustment to become final under the notice’s procedures, add interest or penalties, delay a refund, or reduce your ability to challenge the decision. The exact consequence depends on the CP or LTR number and the tax year. Responding promptly preserves the options the notice provides; it does not guarantee that the IRS will accept your position.

If the deadline has already passed, respond as soon as possible and explain why. Use the notice’s contact method and ask what late-response or appeal procedures are available. Do not assume that a late response is automatically rejected or automatically accepted.

When to get professional help

Many straightforward notices can be handled by matching the requested information to the return and following the printed instructions. Consider help when the issue involves multiple years, disputed income, large credits, identity or payment questions, a proposed assessment you cannot verify, or a deadline that could affect appeal rights.

  • Ask the preparer who signed the return to explain the item and help assemble records.
  • Use a qualified tax professional when the response requires tax-law analysis, a formal appeal or representation before the IRS.
  • The Taxpayer Advocate Service identifies Low Income Taxpayer Clinics as a potential source of assistance for eligible taxpayers. Eligibility and services vary, so confirm them directly with the clinic or the service.

A professional can help interpret a notice, but you remain responsible for giving accurate facts and observing the deadline unless a valid representative arrangement changes who communicates with the IRS.

2026 filing-season deadline context

For the 2026 federal individual filing season, the IRS individual tax-filing guidance identifies April 15, 2026, as the deadline to file and pay federal individual income tax. An extension to file gives more time to submit the return; it does not extend the time to pay. This date is season-specific. Use the deadline that applies to the tax year and filing season at issue, especially when a notice concerns an earlier year.

A practical decision checklist

  • Only checking a refund? Wait the applicable 24-hour, 3-or-4-day or four-week interval, then use Where’s My Refund? with the SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount.
  • Need account history or records? Sign in to the IRS online account instead of expecting the refund tracker to display everything.
  • Received a letter? Verify the issuer, record the CP or LTR number, read the requested action and calendar the printed deadline.
  • Dispute the letter? Explain the specific error and include the requested supporting records.
  • Choosing a delivery method? Use only the phone, mail or upload options the notice authorizes. Do not email unless an authenticated IRS employee specifically asks you to.
  • State communication? Contact the state agency named on the notice.
  • Complex or high-stakes issue? Contact the preparer, a qualified tax professional or, if eligible, a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic before the deadline.
