What to check first
Have the details you used when filing the claim ready: your PF account number, the EPFO office that maintains the account, the claim form or type if you know it, and the submission date. Do not share your UAN password, one-time password (OTP), Aadhaar, PAN or bank details with anyone offering to check the claim for you.

The wording and menu placement of these live services can change. Use the labels currently displayed on the official EPFO pages rather than relying on an old screenshot or an unofficial app.
Which status route should you use?
The two routes are complementary rather than competing systems. The direct lookup is useful when you have the PF account information and want to check a claim without navigating the full member account. The member service is useful when you already use your UAN login and want to see the claim information presented inside your account. If one page is temporarily unavailable, retain evidence of the problem and try the other official route later; an access problem is not a reason to submit a duplicate withdrawal request.

Neither route should be treated as a complete explanation of a delay. A status such as “pending” or “under process” is an activity label, not a finding about your documents or eligibility. The purpose of the lookup is to establish what EPFO has recorded, when it was recorded and whether a written return or deficiency message is available.
How long an EPF withdrawal claim should take
Two different clocks are often confused.

The 20-day statement is the key benchmark for deciding when to seek an explanation. It is not evidence that every claim showing “pending” is defective, and it does not reveal the account-specific cause of a delay.
Keep calendar days and working days separate in your notes. The scheme statement is expressed as 20 days from receipt by the Commissioner. The Citizen Charter uses seven working days and expressly calls that service time aspirational. The grievance target is also seven working days, but it begins when EPFO receives your complaint, not when you first filed the withdrawal claim. These are three related but distinct measurements.

Route 1: use Know Your Claim Status
Enter the account information
- Open EPFO’s official Know Your Claim Status service.
- Select the EPFO office where the account is maintained. If you are unsure, use the office associated with the establishment that held the PF account.
- Enter the PF account number in the fields shown on the live page.
- If your account has no extension, leave the extension or sub-code field blank. Do not insert a made-up value such as zero.
- Submit the lookup and save or photograph the result, including any claim number, date, status wording or return message.
Older EPFO instructions describe the PF number as a combination of an office or region code, establishment code, an optional extension or sub-code, and the member’s account number. The downloadable help document may use labels that no longer match the live form, so treat the current page’s fields as authoritative.
When you save the result, include the page address, the date and time of the check, and the exact spelling of the status. A screenshot that shows only a colored status icon may not be enough for an officer to identify the transaction. Save the complete result or acknowledgement where possible, while removing passwords, OTPs and other credentials before forwarding anything.
If the lookup returns no result
- Check that the office selection matches the account and that you have not swapped the establishment and member-account portions.
- Try the lookup again without entering an extension when your PF number has none.
- Retain a screenshot of the error or empty result. It is useful evidence when you ask EPFO to investigate.
- Do not create a second withdrawal request merely because the lookup is inconvenient or temporarily unavailable.
An empty result does not by itself prove that EPFO rejected the claim. It may reflect an incorrect office or number entry, a temporary service issue, or a record that needs attention. Ask EPFO to verify the claim against the acknowledgement you received instead of guessing which explanation applies.
Route 2: sign in to EPF Passbook & Claim Status
Use the member login
- Open EPFO’s official member passbook service. The page identifies the service as EPF Passbook & Claim Status.
- Enter your UAN and password.
- Complete the captcha exactly as displayed and submit the login.
- Open the claim-status area shown in your account and save the claim reference and status text.
The member portal is a live service, so a particular button or menu may move. The current portal also states that UAN activation and allotment have moved to Aadhaar-based face authentication in UMANG. That notice does not guarantee that every member will see the same screens or that an older activation method will remain available.

Protect the login
EPFO’s passbook page warns members never to respond to calls requesting Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, OTPs or payment. The member portal likewise says to protect UAN and password credentials and states that EPFO does not ask members to deposit money. Type your credentials only into the official EPFO service; do not send them in a message to an agent or “consultant.”
How to interpret a delayed or unclear status
A status label by itself is not a diagnosis. “Pending,” “under process” or a similar phrase tells you that the claim has not reached a final recorded outcome; it does not identify whether a document, employer action, verification check or system issue is responsible. Public status pages cannot establish the reason for an individual account.
The documented process rule is more specific: when EPFO considers a claim deficient, the deficiency should be recorded in writing and communicated to the applicant within 20 days of receipt. Look for a written deficiency, return reason or message in the status result, in your EPFO correspondence or in a grievance response. If there is no explanation, ask EPFO to state the exact deficiency or processing hold rather than relying on a generic internet list of possible causes.

EPFO has displayed a notice explaining that database consolidation and a software upgrade were being phased in with additional verification and validation, and that processing could take longer during an initial two-week stabilisation period. Such a notice is time-sensitive. If it appears on the live portal, follow its current instructions; if it is no longer displayed, do not assume the temporary explanation still applies. In particular, do not generalise a temporary request to avoid repeated submissions into a permanent rule.
A temporary notice can explain slower service at a particular time, but it does not replace the claim-specific response you are entitled to seek. Quote the notice only if it is still visible, note the date you saw it, and continue to preserve your own claim reference and submission evidence.
What to do when the claim is overdue or the reason is missing
1. Build a short case record
- Claim or reference number.
- PF account and the EPFO office selected for the lookup.
- Form type, such as Form 19 or Form 31, if known.
- Date EPFO received the claim or the date shown in the portal.
- Every status label, deficiency message and date you observed.
- Screenshots or downloaded acknowledgements, with sensitive credentials removed.
Arrange the record chronologically: filing acknowledgement first, status checks next, and correspondence or grievance replies last. This makes it easier to show whether the 20-day period has elapsed and prevents you from accidentally reporting a later status as the original one. Keep copies in a secure location, not in a public post or an unencrypted message thread.
2. Register a focused grievance
Use EPFiGMS, identified by EPFO as EPFiGMS (Register your Grievance). The Citizen Charter also lists grievance access through UMANG and pgportal.gov.in. State the claim number, submission date, current status and the precise answer you need—for example, “Please confirm whether the claim is deficient; if so, identify the missing document or correction and the date it was recorded.” Attach only documents relevant to the claim and redact account information that is not necessary.
A focused complaint is more useful than a general message saying that the claim is “too late.” Ask for one of three concrete outcomes: confirmation that the claim is complete and being processed, identification of the recorded deficiency, or the reason and authority for any hold or return. Include the earlier status wording exactly, without adding an unverified diagnosis.

3. Keep the acknowledgement
Save the grievance number and acknowledgement. The Citizen Charter gives a general seven-working-day redressal target and says a grievance that is not redressed is escalated to the next higher authority. That grievance clock is separate from the withdrawal claim’s 20-day scheme period. If the reply does not address your question, use the reply or escalation option provided in the grievance system and quote the earlier reference number.
Do not open multiple identical grievances merely to obtain a faster response. A new submission can make the history harder to follow. If you must follow up, refer to the first grievance number, state what remains unanswered and attach the earlier acknowledgement.
4. Use the official helpdesk carefully
The current member portal lists helpdesk number 14470. Verify the number and operating details on the official portal when you call, because contact arrangements can change. A legitimate helpdesk should not ask you to disclose an OTP, password or payment.

EPFO’s Consolidated Annual Accounts for 2023–24 describe a conditional provision under paragraph 72(7) of the EPF Scheme: when a complete claim is not settled within 20 days without sufficient cause, the Commissioner may be liable for the delay beyond that period and penal interest at 12% per annum may be charged on the benefit amount.
This is not an automatic promise that every late claim will receive interest. The same official report says EPFO did not maintain data that allowed audit to verify how many cases qualified or whether penal interest was imposed, and it records that accounting units reported no such recoveries. Ask EPFO for an official determination in your case; do not calculate or demand interest as though eligibility were already established.
The interest language also depends on the claim being complete and the delay lacking sufficient cause. That is why the written deficiency or processing explanation matters. Preserve the date of receipt and the documents EPFO identifies, then ask whether the conditional provision applies to your individual claim.
Troubleshooting common access problems
The PF number format is confusing
Use the office, establishment, optional extension and member-account fields shown by the live Know Your Claim Status page. Leave the extension blank when none exists. Compare the entry with the claim acknowledgement rather than guessing from a payslip or an old employer email.

Use the portal’s current password-recovery or help options. Avoid giving your UAN password or OTP to anyone who offers to log in for you. If the portal is temporarily unavailable, use the direct status route later and preserve a screenshot showing the outage.

The result has not changed
Record the date and exact wording each time you check. Once the claim is beyond the applicable period or the portal gives no written reason, move to EPFiGMS rather than filing duplicate withdrawal requests. A grievance creates a traceable request for an explanation.
A caller says payment will speed up the claim
End the call. EPFO says it never calls members or pensioners to request a deposit and warns against sharing Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, OTPs or passwords. Do not pay an intermediary to “unlock” a claim.
A website asks for credentials before showing a status
Close it unless it is an official EPFO service. The direct status facility and member login have identifiable EPFO labels; an unofficial page that asks for an OTP, password or payment is not a safe shortcut. Navigate by typing the official address yourself or using EPFO’s own links.

You should not give another person your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar, PAN or bank details for that purpose. Use the official status page yourself, and remember that EPFO says it does not request deposits or personal information by telephone.

Should I file the withdrawal claim again if the status page is blank?
Not merely because the lookup is blank or temporarily unavailable. Check the office and PF-number fields, save evidence of the result, and ask EPFO to verify the existing claim. Follow any current temporary notice on the portal, but do not turn a short-term instruction into a permanent rule.
Will EPFO automatically pay 12% interest on a late claim?
No automatic payment should be assumed. The 12% figure is part of a conditional provision for a complete claim delayed beyond 20 days without sufficient cause. The official accounts also record that implementation data was not maintained for audit verification. Request an official determination for your claim.
