You cannot use an official EPFO balance service completely without a UAN. EPFO’s SMS, missed-call and passbook services all require an activated UAN in some form. If you have forgotten the number, first retrieve it through the EPFO Member portal’s Know Your UAN option. If you have never received a UAN or need to activate one, EPFO currently directs members to UMANG’s Aadhaar face-authentication service. After you recover or activate the UAN, you can check the balance by SMS, missed call or the detailed passbook.
Use only the official EPFO website and UMANG app. Portal menus can change, so follow the live prompts rather than old instructions that still describe portal-based activation.

Is an EPF balance check possible without a UAN?
Not through the official EPFO methods currently documented. The missed-call service requires a mobile number activated with your UAN and at least one of Aadhaar, PAN or a bank account seeded to that UAN. The short-code SMS service requires an activated UAN and the mobile number registered with it. The Member Passbook page asks for your UAN and password.

That means a forgotten UAN is a recovery problem, not a balance-service shortcut. Start at the EPFO Member portal and select Know Your UAN. If no UAN exists, or an existing one needs activation, use the current UMANG route described below.

Know which problem you are solving
“I cannot check my balance” can describe several different situations. You may have a UAN but have forgotten the number, have a UAN that was never activated, have an activated UAN but no access to the registered mobile, or need detailed entries rather than a single balance message. The correct next step depends on that distinction.
- Forgotten number: use Know Your UAN on the EPFO Member portal.
- No UAN or inactive UAN: use the UMANG face-authentication service that EPFO currently identifies for generation or activation.
- Activated UAN and registered phone: SMS or missed call may be the quickest options, subject to each method’s requirements.
- Need transaction-level detail: use the Member Passbook login with your UAN and password.
Neither a missed call nor an SMS is a substitute for UAN recovery. They are lookup services available after the underlying UAN and mobile identity have been established.
Prepare before you begin
A short checklist can prevent repeated failed attempts. Use the official EPFO Member portal for recovery, the official UMANG app for face authentication, and a phone you control. Keep your Aadhaar number available only inside the official service, and make sure you can receive messages on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar if you are using UMANG.
For an SMS or missed call, identify which mobile number is registered with the UAN. A number that is merely in your possession is not necessarily the number EPFO has associated with the account. For missed call, also determine whether Aadhaar, PAN or a bank account has been seeded to the UAN. For the passbook, you need the UAN and the passbook password, not just an employer name or PF account reference.
Recover a forgotten UAN through the EPFO Member portal
The Member portal’s Know Your UAN route is the official first step when you previously had a UAN but no longer know the number. EPFO describes it as a way to retrieve the Universal Account Number using basic personal details.
- Open the official EPFO Member portal from EPFO’s website.
- Choose Know Your UAN from the member services shown on the live page.
- Enter the information requested by the portal and submit the verification details.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for the mobile number and identity checks the portal presents.
- Record the UAN shown or sent to you, then use it to activate or sign in to an eligible balance service.
The exact fields and verification sequence are controlled by the live portal. Do not assume that every identity detail or mobile-number arrangement will work in every case. If the information does not match EPFO’s records, stop after the official error message and use the support options rather than repeatedly submitting altered details.
Once the number is recovered, note it in a secure password manager or another private record. Do not post it in a public forum or send it to an unknown “PF agent.” Knowing the UAN alone does not make the passbook or SMS service work if the UAN is inactive or the registered phone is different.

EPFO’s current member guidance says portal-based UAN activation has been discontinued. For new UAN generation or activation of an existing UAN, it directs members to UMANG’s UAN Services Through Face Auth. EPFO’s 2025 notice explains the Aadhaar, OTP and face-authentication sequence.
- Install or open the official UMANG app on a compatible smartphone.
- Open the UAN services section and select UAN Services Through Face Auth.
- Choose the service for generating a new UAN or activating an existing UAN, according to your situation.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
- Request and validate the one-time password sent for verification.
- Complete the face-authentication step in the app. The process uses Aadhaar-image matching as described in EPFO’s notice.
- After successful matching, look for the generated or activated UAN in the SMS sent to your verified mobile number.
The official notice covering this process is EPFO’s 2025 announcement on UAN generation and activation through UMANG face authentication. The Member portal currently lists EPFO’s helpdesk as 14470 if the service does not complete or your records cannot be verified.

What you need before starting face authentication
- An Aadhaar number that can be entered into the UMANG service.
- A mobile number linked to Aadhaar so you can receive and validate the OTP.
- A smartphone capable of completing the app’s face-authentication flow.
- Adequate lighting and a clear view of your face for the image-matching step.
The process is an identity check, not a balance statement by itself. A successful UAN generation or activation gives you the identifier needed for the later balance methods. Keep the confirmation SMS, but still use the official EPFO services for the actual account information.
Do not treat a failed match as proof that your EPF account is missing. It only means the current verification attempt did not establish the required identity match. Contact EPFO through the official helpdesk or ask your employer to help resolve a record mismatch.
Choose a balance-check method after you recover the UAN
Once your UAN is known and activated, the available official routes differ in what they require and what they show.

Choose SMS when you have the registered phone and only need a quick text response. Choose missed call when the registered phone meets the additional KYC-seeding condition and you prefer not to compose a message. Choose the passbook when you need to inspect entries rather than receive a brief balance notification. All three choices remain downstream of the UAN.
Check the balance by SMS
EPFO’s short-code instructions require you to send a message from the mobile number registered with your activated UAN.
- Open the SMS app on the registered phone.
- Type
EPFOHO UAN. - Send the message to
7738299899. - Wait for the response containing your EPFO account information.
English is the default language. You can append one of EPFO’s listed three-letter language codes after UAN. For example, a Telugu request is EPFOHO UAN TEL. The available languages are English (default), Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali.
Sending the text from a different phone, using an unactivated UAN or omitting the required spacing will not bypass EPFO’s identity checks. If you changed your phone number, update the registered details through an official EPFO process before relying on SMS. The SMS route is intended for the registered member, so do not ask a friend to send the request from their handset.

Check the balance with a missed call
The missed-call route is useful when you have a working registered mobile but do not want to use a browser or compose an SMS. It is not a UAN-free service.

- Confirm that your mobile number is activated with your UAN.
- Confirm that at least one of your bank account, Aadhaar or PAN details is seeded to that UAN.
- From the same registered mobile, give a missed call to
9966044425. - Wait for EPFO’s response message with the available balance information.
If the call is made from an unregistered number, or none of the required KYC details is seeded to the UAN, the service’s prerequisites are not met. The official requirements and number are listed in EPFO’s Missed Call Service document.
Do not infer that a non-response means the account has no balance. It can indicate that the registered mobile, UAN activation or KYC-seeding requirement has not been satisfied. Check those conditions first, then use the official support route if the problem continues.
Use the EPFO Member Passbook for detailed entries
The passbook is the most useful route when you need more than a quick balance message, because it provides an online view of the account entries available through the passbook service. It requires both the UAN and the password associated with the Member Passbook login.
- Open the official EPFO Member Passbook page.
- Enter your UAN and passbook password.
- Complete any security verification shown on the page.
- Sign in and select the relevant account view presented by the service.
- Review the displayed entries and balance, and save or print the page only on a device you control.
The passbook page also displays EPFO’s directions for the missed-call and SMS services. If you do not know the UAN, those directions cannot replace the recovery step on the Member portal. If you can sign in but an expected entry is not visible, record the exact message or missing period and raise it through EPFO or your employer rather than trying an unofficial viewer.
What to do when recovery or verification fails
The “Know Your UAN” details do not match
Check that the information you entered matches the records held by EPFO and that you are using the current Member portal. Avoid guessing at alternate spellings or submitting a series of inconsistent details. If the official route still cannot identify you, contact EPFO’s helpdesk at 14470 and ask your employer to check whether the personal details attached to your employment record need correction.

The face-authentication route requires an Aadhaar-linked mobile for OTP validation. Without access to that number, the UMANG sequence cannot complete as described by EPFO. Resolve the mobile-link issue through the appropriate official Aadhaar process, then retry the UMANG UAN service. Do not give an OTP to an intermediary who offers to complete the process.
Face authentication does not match
Retry only through the official app and follow its live prompts. A clear view of your face and adequate lighting are practical prerequisites for the image-matching step. If repeated attempts fail, use the listed helpdesk and involve your employer where an employment or identity record may be inconsistent. There is no official basis for promising that a third-party service can override the match.
You have a UAN but SMS or missed call does not respond
- For SMS, verify that the message is being sent from the mobile number registered with the activated UAN.
- For missed call, verify both the registered mobile requirement and the seeding of Aadhaar, PAN or a bank account to the UAN.
- Check the exact destination number:
7738299899for SMS and9966044425for a missed call. - If your UAN is not activated, complete activation through the current UMANG face-authentication service rather than following an old portal-activation guide.
You know the UAN but forgot the passbook password
Use the password-recovery controls shown on the official Member Passbook login page. Do not create an account on a third-party “PF balance” site that asks for your Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or payment. The passbook route remains dependent on the UAN and its official login credentials.
You no longer have the registered mobile
SMS and missed call both depend on the mobile number registered with the UAN, while UMANG activation or generation requires the mobile linked to Aadhaar for OTP validation. If you cannot access the relevant number, use the official EPFO or Aadhaar update process applicable to your records and seek help at 14470. Do not assume that a different phone can be substituted simply because you know the UAN.

Protect your EPF identity and account information
EPFO warns that it does not ask for Aadhaar, PAN, bank information or money over the phone. A caller promising to retrieve your UAN or release an EPF balance is not an official verification channel.
- Type the EPFO addresses yourself or reach them through the official EPFO website.
- Use the official UMANG app for face authentication; avoid APK files and links sent by strangers.
- Never disclose an OTP, UAN password, Aadhaar details or banking credentials to a caller or messaging contact.
- Do not pay a service that claims it can reveal your balance without a UAN.
- Sign out of passbook sessions on shared devices and avoid saving passwords in public browsers.
- Check that a web address is an official EPFO or government service before entering any identifier.

Frequently asked questions
Can I check EPF balance with only my Aadhaar number?
Aadhaar by itself is not listed as a UAN-free balance lookup. It can support UAN generation or activation through UMANG when paired with an Aadhaar-linked mobile, OTP validation and face authentication. After that, use an eligible UAN-based balance service.
Can I use the missed-call number without knowing my UAN?
No. The missed-call service requires a mobile number activated with the UAN and at least one seeded Aadhaar, PAN or bank account. Recover or activate the UAN first.

Can somebody else send the SMS for me?
The SMS must be sent from the mobile number registered with the activated UAN. Sending it from another person’s phone does not satisfy that requirement.
Does the passbook work with a PF account number instead of a UAN?
The Member Passbook login asks for the UAN and password. A PF account reference alone is not described as a replacement for those credentials.
Is portal-based UAN activation still available?
EPFO’s current member portal says portal-based activation has been discontinued and points members to UMANG’s UAN Services Through Face Auth. Follow the live official guidance rather than an older tutorial.
What if my employer created more than one UAN?
The official materials reviewed here do not provide a separate duplicate-UAN procedure. Do not create or merge records through an unofficial site. Contact EPFO at 14470 and ask your employer to help verify the employment and identity records attached to the UAN.
Will a failed lookup prove that my EPF balance is zero?
No. A failed response can result from an inactive UAN, an unregistered phone, missing KYC seeding, a password problem or an identity mismatch. Resolve the service prerequisite first; do not interpret a technical or verification failure as a balance statement.

A practical decision path
- Forgotten UAN: use Know Your UAN on the official Member portal.
- No UAN or inactive UAN: use UMANG’s UAN Services Through Face Auth with Aadhaar, an Aadhaar-linked mobile and face authentication.
- UAN activated and registered mobile available: use SMS to
7738299899or a missed call to9966044425, observing each method’s prerequisites. - Need detailed entries: sign in to the Member Passbook page with the UAN and password.
- Identity or record mismatch: contact EPFO at 14470 and involve your employer; do not rely on unofficial recovery services.
The key distinction is between not knowing your UAN and not having a UAN at all. In both situations, the official process puts UAN recovery, generation or activation before the balance lookup.
