Use Passbook Lite for a quick total and the full passbook when you need month-by-month contributions, withdrawals and employment records. Withdrawal eligibility is not determined by the balance alone: it depends on the claim type, service and exit details, and the rule currently applied by EPFO for that claim.
What your EPF record contains
EPFO administers three separate schemes. The Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme (EPF) is the savings account that accumulates contributions and interest. The Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) provides pension benefits. The Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI) provides insurance related to death in service. A figure shown in an EPF passbook should therefore not automatically be treated as your total pension or insurance entitlement.

The passbook is the account record available to you through EPFO. Your payslip is a useful cross-check for the amount your employer deducted, but it is not a substitute for the EPFO transaction history. When checking a record, look at the member ID and employment period as well as the wage month; a person who has changed jobs can have more than one employment record linked to the same UAN.
Choose the right way to check your balance
| Route | What it provides | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| EPFO member portal | Account access, Passbook Lite summary, contribution and withdrawal totals, and links to member services | UAN and password; the portal also displays account-recovery and UAN-service options |
| EPFO Member Passbook portal | Comprehensive passbook transactions and graphical display, with claim-status access on the same service | UAN, password and captcha |
| Missed-call enquiry | A balance enquiry without signing in to a website | A mobile number registered with EPFO; call 9966044425 |
| SMS enquiry | A balance message sent to your phone | Send EPFOHO UAN <LAN> to 7738299899; use the language code specified by EPFO |
Use only the official EPFO member and passbook services. Search results can contain look-alike pages, so check the domain and the service branding before entering a UAN, password, Aadhaar, bank information or one-time password.

How to check your EPF balance online
1. Sign in to the member portal
- Open the official EPFO member portal.
- Enter your UAN and password, complete the captcha or other on-screen verification, and sign in.
- If you do not yet have access, use the UAN activation, recovery or account-access link shown on the portal. Current portal instructions direct members to UMANG for UAN activation or generation through Aadhaar-based face authentication.
Do not create a second UAN merely because an old password is unavailable. First use the recovery instructions shown by EPFO or the UMANG route. A duplicate UAN can make employment records and transfers harder to reconcile.
2. Open Passbook Lite for a quick view
Passbook Lite is the summarized view inside the member portal. EPFO announced it on 18 September 2025 as part of a single-login approach. It is useful when you want the current balance, a broad contribution total or a withdrawal total without opening every transaction. The summary is not a replacement for the detailed passbook when you are investigating a missing wage month or checking an individual entry.
3. Open the full Member Passbook portal for transaction detail
- Go to the official service branded EPF Passbook & Claim Status.
- Enter the UAN, password and captcha.
- Select the relevant member ID or employment period.
- Review the wage-month entries, employee and employer postings, interest entries, withdrawals and running balance. Use the graphical display when you need to see how the account changed over time.
The full portal is the better choice for an audit trail. Save or print the relevant period only after checking that you selected the correct member ID; selecting an older employment record can make a current contribution appear to be missing.

How to check your PF contribution
To answer “How do I check my PF contribution?”, compare the passbook month by month with your payslips and employment dates.

- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- List the wage months for which you were employed and paid.
- In the passbook, open each applicable member ID and check whether an entry appears for each expected month.
- Compare the employee deduction shown on the payslip with the employee contribution recorded in the passbook. Keep the employer’s contribution as a separate line when reviewing the total.
- Check for interest, transfers or withdrawals that explain why the running balance differs from the sum of recent deductions.
- Keep copies of payslips, the passbook extract and your joining and exit records if you need to raise a correction request.
Do not calculate an individual EPF-versus-EPS split from a generic percentage. The official pages used for this guide do not provide a sufficiently current, comprehensive rate breakdown for every applicable situation. If you need the exact allocation, rely on the current EPFO notification or the figures displayed for your account rather than applying a remembered rate.

Missed call
The official passbook service lists a missed-call balance enquiry at 9966044425. Call from the mobile number registered with your UAN and end the call when the service responds or disconnects it. If no message arrives, confirm that the calling number is the one recorded with EPFO and then use the online passbook instead.
SMS
Send EPFOHO UAN <LAN> to 7738299899. Replace <LAN> with the preferred-language code defined in EPFO’s SMS instructions. Do not guess the code; check the current instruction on the official service if you are unsure. An incorrectly formatted message can fail even when the UAN is valid.
Why is my EPF passbook not updated?
A missing online entry does not by itself prove that your employer failed to remit a contribution. EPFO has posted a notice that passbook posting for certain wage months was under process during a system change. Processing and display can therefore lag behind a payslip or payroll date.
Rank #3
Use this check before escalating
- Confirm that you are viewing the correct member ID and employment period.
- Check the wage month, not only the date on which you received your payslip.
- Compare more than one month; a single delayed posting is different from a continuing gap.
- Look for current EPFO notices about posting or system changes.
- Retain the payslip and bank-credit evidence while waiting for the passbook to catch up.
If the expected period remains absent after the relevant processing delay, ask your employer’s payroll or provident-fund contact to verify the remittance and member details. If the employer’s explanation conflicts with the passbook, use EPFO’s member-support channels and provide the member ID, wage month and documentary evidence. Do not infer non-remittance solely from one delayed screen entry.
EPF, EPS and EDLI claims are different
Your balance enquiry concerns the EPF account, but the claim menu can include benefits from the other two schemes. EPFO’s scheme overview associates the following forms with different purposes:
| Form | General purpose described by EPFO | What to verify before filing |
|---|---|---|
| Form 19 | Final settlement of the EPF member account | Whether your exit and service circumstances satisfy the current final-settlement rule |
| Form 31 | Specified EPF withdrawals or advances | The permitted purpose, amount, service history and documents, if any |
| Form 13 | Transfer of an EPF balance to a new account | That the new employment and member IDs are correctly linked |
| Form 10D | Monthly EPS pension | Pension eligibility and the pension-service information shown by EPFO |
| Form 10C | EPS withdrawal benefit or a scheme certificate | Whether withdrawal benefit or a certificate is the applicable EPS outcome |
This table is an orientation, not an entitlement decision. The live claim screen can ask for information or show options that depend on your record. A request for an EPF final settlement is not the same as an EPS pension claim, and neither is an EDLI insurance claim.
How to check EPF withdrawal eligibility
There is no single withdrawal answer that applies to every member. Start with the purpose of the claim, then consider your service history, recorded exit status, member ID, previous withdrawals and the rule currently implemented for that claim. The balance displayed in Passbook Lite cannot, by itself, tell you whether a claim will be approved.
Rank #4
Check the live claim options
- Sign in to the official EPFO member portal with your UAN and password.
- Open the current withdrawal, advance, transfer or pension-claim service.
- Select the member ID and claim type that match your circumstances.
- Read the eligibility prompt, amount shown, service requirement and document list before submitting.
- Submit only when the bank, identity and exit information displayed by EPFO is correct, and save the acknowledgement or claim reference.
If the portal rejects a claim or shows an option that seems inconsistent with your circumstances, do not submit a contradictory declaration simply to force the request through. Record the message and contact EPFO for clarification.
What changed in the October 2025 withdrawal announcements?
The Ministry of Labour and Employment and EPFO issued releases in October 2025 describing reforms approved by the Central Board of Trustees. Those releases are important context, but an announcement does not establish the live entitlement for every member or every claim type. Check the current portal wording and effective scheme provision before relying on a figure.
| Detail described in the 2025 releases | How to use it safely |
|---|---|
| Partial withdrawals consolidated into essential-needs, housing-needs and special-circumstances categories | Use the category presented by the current claim screen; do not assume every purpose qualifies. |
| Minimum service requirement reduced to one year | Confirm that the one-year rule is effective for your exact claim and that the service is counted as EPFO records it. |
| Up to 75% of the eligible amount described as withdrawable without documentation | Treat 75% as the announced policy figure, not an automatic amount available in every account. |
| Twenty-five per cent of contributions described as a minimum balance to retain | Check how the portal calculates the eligible balance and retained amount for your claim. |
| Education withdrawals described as available up to 10 times and marriage withdrawals up to five times | Verify the applicable purpose, count of previous claims and effective implementation. |
| Partial withdrawal described as up to 100% of the eligible balance after the minimum balance in specified circumstances | “Eligible balance” and the specified circumstance control the result; it does not mean an unrestricted withdrawal of every EPF rupee. |
| Premature EPF final-settlement waiting period described as changing from two months to 12 months | Confirm the period currently enforced for your exit date and claim. |
| Final EPS withdrawal benefit waiting period described as changing from two months to 36 months | Verify that the EPS provision is in force and that you are seeking an EPS withdrawal benefit rather than monthly pension. |
The 75%, 25%, 10-times, five-times, 12-month and 36-month figures above are figures published in the 2025 official releases. They are not independent estimates or a guarantee of claim processing. The portal’s eligibility result and the effective scheme rule for the date of your claim take priority.

How to check EPF claim status
The official Member Passbook service is branded “EPF Passbook & Claim Status.” Sign in with your UAN, password and captcha, then open the claim-status function and select the relevant member record. Compare the claim reference and type with the acknowledgement you saved when filing. If the status does not match the claim you submitted, use the member portal’s support instructions rather than filing a duplicate request.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
For a claim that is pending, first check whether EPFO has requested information or whether the bank and identity details on the member profile are complete. A status screen is a progress indication, not a promise that a claim satisfies a separate scheme condition. Questions about an eligibility decision should include the claim reference, member ID and the exact message shown by the portal.
Security rules for EPFO accounts
- Use only official EPFO domains and the UMANG route referenced by EPFO.
- Never share your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar, PAN, bank-account details or card information with a caller or message sender.
- Do not pay anyone who says EPFO requires a deposit to release your balance or accelerate a claim.
- EPFO’s passbook and member-portal warnings state that it does not call members to request personal details or a deposit.
- Type the service address yourself or use a trusted bookmark instead of following an unsolicited payment or login link.
When you cannot access your UAN
Use the account-recovery or UAN instructions displayed on the official member portal. Current instructions also direct members to UMANG for UAN activation or generation through Aadhaar-based face authentication. Keep your registered mobile available for the verification step and stop if a page asks for a payment or for credentials to be sent to an intermediary.
EPFO lists 14470 as its helpdesk number. Have your UAN, member ID, wage month and claim reference ready, but disclose them only through the official support channel. A paid agent is not required to check a passbook and should never handle your OTP.

A practical monthly checking routine
- After payroll closes, keep the payslip showing the employee deduction.
- Check Passbook Lite for a quick update, then use the full passbook when the month appears.
- Verify the member ID, wage month, employee entry and employer entry.
- Record any transfer, interest or withdrawal that changes the running balance.
- If an entry is delayed, check EPFO notices and retain evidence rather than assuming a default.
- Before requesting money, identify whether you need an EPF advance, final settlement, transfer, EPS benefit or another scheme service.
- Read the live eligibility and documentation prompts and save the claim acknowledgement.
This routine separates three decisions that are often confused: whether a contribution was posted, what amount the EPF account currently shows, and whether a particular claim is available. Keeping them separate makes a missing entry, a transfer issue and a withdrawal decision much easier to resolve.
