The most direct way to check your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) balance and contribution entries is EPFO’s official EPF Passbook & Claim Status service. Sign in with your Universal Account Number (UAN), password and the captcha, then choose Download → Download Passbook to open the passbook or save its PDF.
If you do not yet have an activated UAN, EPFO currently directs members to use UMANG with Aadhaar-based face authentication. If your employer operates an exempted establishment, the online passbook may not be available; in that case, request your provident-fund statement from the establishment itself.

What you need before checking your EPF account
Have your UAN and UAN-member-portal password ready. The official passbook page also displays a captcha, so you need to be able to read and enter that challenge before submitting the login form. Use a browser on a phone or computer and type the EPFO address yourself rather than following an unsolicited message or caller’s link.

- Password: the password associated with your UAN member login.
- Captcha: the verification challenge shown on the live sign-in page.
- Secure connection: use the official epfindia.gov.in or passbook.epfindia.gov.in domain and avoid look-alike websites.
EPFO’s live member portal also states that direct UAN allotment and activation facilities on that portal have been discontinued. Members are directed to UMANG for activation of an existing UAN or generation of a new UAN through Aadhaar-based face authentication. Because the route and screen labels are operational services that can change, check the notice on the live portal before beginning.

How to open and download your EPF passbook
1. Open the official passbook service
Go directly to EPFO’s Member Passbook. The page is titled EPF Passbook & Claim Status and shows fields for your UAN, password and captcha. Confirm that the address bar shows the official domain before entering anything.
2. Sign in with your UAN and password
Enter the UAN and password associated with your member account, complete the captcha and submit the form. Do not give these credentials to an agent, a caller claiming to be from EPFO or anyone offering to “unlock” your balance. If the form rejects the details, recheck each character and reload the official page before trying again.
3. Use the documented download path
After signing in, open the Download menu and select Download Passbook. This is the navigation path documented in EPFO’s member FAQ, which also describes using the PDF link to open or download the statement. Save the PDF only on a device or account you control because it contains personal account information.

Read the entries shown for the member account and identify the periods and amounts recorded for your contributions. The passbook is the place to compare what EPFO has posted with the deductions and employer contributions shown on your payroll records. Keep the comparison factual: an amount absent from the passbook is not proof by itself that a payroll deduction was never made, and the official pages reviewed here do not establish a universal posting interval.
5. Keep a dated copy for your records
Give the downloaded file a clear name that includes the account and the date you retrieved it, then store it in an encrypted or otherwise protected location. A dated PDF lets you show the exact entries you saw if you later need to ask your employer or EPFO about a discrepancy. Avoid emailing the file to an unknown address or uploading it to an unverified “balance-check” service.
What the online passbook can tell you
The passbook presents the contribution details that EPFO has recorded for the member account. Use it as an account record, not as a promise that a very recent payroll transaction will already be visible. The official passbook page and member FAQ do not state a current update schedule, so do not rely on a fixed number of days when deciding that a contribution is missing.

- Compare the member and employer amounts displayed there with the corresponding payroll record.
- Mark the entries that differ, including the period, amount and the date on which you downloaded the statement.
Keep the original payroll documents and the PDF together. If you contact the employer, provide the specific period and amount rather than sending your password, OTP or unnecessary identity documents.
If no passbook appears
Check whether the establishment is exempted
EPFO’s member FAQ says that members of an exempted establishment cannot use the portal passbook and should contact their establishment for the PF statement. An employer-managed statement is therefore the correct record for that case; repeatedly trying the public passbook page will not create an online statement.
Ask the establishment’s authorised provident-fund contact for the statement and retain the response with your payroll records. Do not assume that the absence of a portal passbook means that your account has no balance.
Check the account and login details
If you are not known to be in an exempted establishment, confirm that you are using the correct UAN and password on the official page. A UAN that has not been activated cannot be used for the normal member sign-in, and a password or captcha error can prevent access even when the account exists.

Escalate a contribution question precisely
When an entry does not match your payroll record, write down the establishment, relevant pay period, amount shown by payroll and amount shown in the passbook. Ask the employer to reconcile that specific item, or use EPFO’s official support channels rather than paying an intermediary. Since no current posting interval is stated on the cited pages, avoid presenting a transaction as overdue solely because it is not visible immediately.

Activating or generating a UAN through UMANG
EPFO’s current member-portal notice says that activation of an existing UAN and generation of a new UAN are handled through UMANG using Aadhaar-based face authentication. The same notice says the portal’s own direct UAN allotment and activation facilities have been discontinued and lists EPFO’s helpdesk number as 14470.
Use the official UMANG application or website, select the EPFO service, choose the option that matches your situation and follow the on-screen Aadhaar face-authentication instructions. The exact labels and prompts can change, so follow the live instructions rather than an old screenshot or a third-party tutorial. Complete the process only inside the official service and do not disclose an Aadhaar OTP or account password to a person assisting by phone.
Once an existing UAN is activated and you have a password, return to the official Member Passbook service to sign in. If you generated a new UAN, retain the number and the credentials created during the official process.

The live passbook page lists two alternatives to signing in to the passbook. They are enquiry services, not permission for an unsolicited caller or text sender to request your personal information.

Phone numbers and service availability can change. Recheck the live page at the time you use either enquiry route. Never send a password, Aadhaar number, PAN, bank details or OTP in response to a balance-related call or message.
How to protect your EPF credentials
EPFO’s member portal warns users about credential theft and says not to share passwords or personal information such as Aadhaar, PAN or bank details over the phone. The passbook page separately warns against sharing personal details or OTPs and against making payments after receiving a call.

EPFO states: EPFO does not contact members to ask for any monetary deposits.
Treat any demand for a deposit, “verification fee” or payment to release a passbook as fraudulent. A legitimate balance check does not require you to transfer money to a caller.

- Check the address bar before entering your UAN or password.
- Keep OTPs, passwords, Aadhaar, PAN and bank information private.
- Do not install remote-access software because someone claims it is needed to view your EPF balance.
- End the call if the person asks for money or sensitive information, then navigate to EPFO yourself.

Troubleshooting checklist
The official page will not load
Confirm that you entered the passbook address correctly and that the address bar still shows the official domain. Try the page again later using a normal browser session, but do not switch to an unofficial “EPF balance” site merely because it appears first in a search result.
The UAN or password is rejected
Re-enter the credentials carefully and check the captcha. If you no longer know the password, use only a recovery or reset option presented within the official member service. Do not ask a third party to log in on your behalf or send your password by email or messaging app.
The PDF link does not open
Return to the signed-in portal and repeat the documented Download → Download Passbook path. Check that your browser is allowing a file download and that you have enough secure storage. If the portal remains unavailable, record the date and time and use the official support route rather than downloading a file from another website.
A recent contribution is not visible
Compare the passbook with the relevant payroll record and note the exact period and amount. Because EPFO’s cited pages do not establish a current update interval, do not claim that a contribution has been lost solely because it is not displayed yet. Ask the establishment to reconcile the specific discrepancy and keep copies of all responses.

You receive a suspicious balance message or call
Do not reply with personal information, click its link or make a payment. Close the message, navigate to the official EPFO page yourself and use the published service details. EPFO’s warning about deposits and credential theft applies even when the caller knows your name or some employment details.

A simple record-keeping routine
- Retrieve the passbook from the official portal when you need to review your account.
- Download the PDF through Download → Download Passbook.
- Save it with the retrieval date in a protected folder.
- Compare each relevant period with your payroll records.
- List discrepancies by period and amount before contacting the establishment.
- Keep the employer’s statement instead of repeatedly attempting the portal if the establishment is exempted.
This routine separates an access problem from a contribution question. It also gives you a clear record of what EPFO displayed at a particular time without relying on screenshots supplied by an unknown person.

Use the EPFO Member Passbook for sign-in, passbook access and the currently displayed missed-call and SMS enquiry details.
