How to check your credit report if you live in Jersey

To check your credit report in Jersey, ask each credit reference agency (CRA) directly for the information it holds about you. The Government of Jersey says a copy request is free and can be made verbally or in writing. Since 30 July 2026, the Government has shared residents’ name, residential address and date of birth with Experian and Equifax unless they opt out. That limited identity data is intended to support lender checks; it is not a government-issued credit score or a promise that an application will be approved.

If you are preparing to apply for a card, loan or mortgage, request your records early enough to investigate unfamiliar entries. Checking a file is different from applying for credit: the request lets you see information held about you and does not itself create a government score or guarantee that a lender will make an offer.

What a credit report is—and what it is not

A credit report is the information a CRA holds about your identity and borrowing history. Lenders may use that information, alongside their own criteria, when assessing a credit-card, loan or mortgage application. A credit score is a separate calculation: it may be produced by a CRA or lender from information in a report, but the Government of Jersey’s data-sharing arrangement does not create a single government score for residents.

A report can contain identifying details, account information, applications, payment or judgment information and the source of an entry. The exact contents depend on what the agency has received and how it matches records. A numerical score or an app summary is therefore not a substitute for asking for the underlying personal information.

The Government’s current guidance directs Jersey residents to the CRAs for questions about data held in their files. It does not say that one agency provides a complete view of every Jersey record, so checking more than one relevant source can be sensible when an application depends on a particular entry.

Do not assume that the Government’s feed contains your entire financial history. The arrangement sends only specified identity fields, and a lender still performs its own assessment. A file can be accurate while an application is declined for reasons such as affordability, income, residency, fraud controls or the lender’s risk policy.

How do I get a copy of my credit report in Jersey?

  1. Contact the CRA directly. Ask for a copy of all personal information it holds about you. The Government’s 28 July 2023 CRA Q&A says this access request is free and may be made verbally or in writing.
  2. Ask how the agency handles Jersey residents. Consumer portals and identity-verification processes designed for UK addresses may not accept a Jersey address or may not show the same information. The current Jersey guidance does not establish a particular online workflow for either Experian or Equifax, so do not assume that a UK sign-up route will work.
  3. Complete the agency’s identity checks. The CRA will tell you what information or documents it needs to confirm that the file belongs to you. Provide only what is necessary through the agency’s official contact channel. If the agency asks you to clarify a former address or another identifier, answer consistently so it can distinguish your file from someone with a similar name.
  4. Request the file in a usable form. You can ask the agency to explain entries, dates, account status and the source of disputed information. Keep the request and the reply so you have a record if an entry later needs correcting. Save the report securely because it contains personal information.
  5. Check the other relevant record holder. If your question concerns a Jersey court judgment rather than a lender account, use the local court-record routes described below. A CRA copy alone may not answer every question about a Jersey judgment.
  6. Repeat the check with the other named CRA when it matters. The Government shares the limited identity feed with both Experian and Equifax, but the available guidance does not establish that their files are identical or complete. Comparing responses can reveal why an entry appears in one file but not another.

The Government’s Q&A establishes the free access right, but current Jersey-specific request links and interfaces for Experian and Equifax were not confirmed in the latest guidance. Contact the agency first rather than relying on a portal that may be limited to UK residents. Avoid paying for a score or monitoring package simply to exercise the free access right.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you write or call, describe the request clearly: you want the personal information and credit-related records the agency holds about you as a Jersey resident. Ask where the response will be sent, what identity evidence is required and how to raise a correction if an entry is wrong. Keep a dated copy of what you submitted.

Which source should you use?

What you are checking Where to start What the source can tell you Who can correct the underlying record?
CRA-held identity, account or lender information Experian or Equifax, contacted directly The personal information and credit-related records held in that agency’s file Raise the error with the CRA; if it came from a lender, that lender may need to amend its own data
Jersey court judgment information Jersey Court Registry, Jersey Business Brief and the local judgment-record process Published or inspectable judgment information, subject to the current court and registry procedures The creditor or relevant record holder, using the correction route described by Citizens Advice Jersey
Petty Debts Court records Registry Trust records, where applicable Records held for the Petty Debts Court Contact the party responsible for the inaccurate source record and follow the applicable registry process

These are different record streams, not competing credit products. The Government confirms that it shares limited identity fields with Experian and Equifax; Citizens Advice Jersey identifies Channel Islands Data Services in the local judgment context. Neither source establishes that one report contains every credit-related record in Jersey.

Use the table to identify the party that can actually answer your question. A CRA can explain what it displays and may correct its file, but a lender often controls the account data it supplied. A court or registry record follows a separate local process. Asking the wrong organisation first can delay a correction.

What changed on 30 July 2026?

From 30 July 2026, the Government of Jersey began sharing the following information about Jersey residents aged 18 and over with Experian and Equifax, unless the resident opts out:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • name;
  • residential address; and
  • date of birth.

These are basic identity fields. They are not a government-built credit report, a government credit score or a record of every account you have held. The legal provision limits the fields and the purposes for which they may be used. Those purposes include vetting credit applications, specified anti-money-laundering purposes and anonymised statistical analysis.

The age scope matters: the Government guidance describes the arrangement for Jersey residents aged 18 and over. It is not a statement that every person of that age has a complete CRA file, nor that a person under 18 can use the same process. If your circumstances do not fit the guidance, ask the Government department or the CRA how its procedure applies.

The policy is designed to help providers carry out identity and credit checks for Jersey applicants. On 1 July 2026, Social Security Minister Senator Elaine Millar said: “Sharing our basic information will make it easier for banks to carry out the necessary checks and will give us more choice and greater access to credit cards in Jersey.” That is the intended policy effect, not a guarantee that a particular person will receive a card, loan or mortgage.

The Jersey Information Commissioner, Paul Vane, described the background on 3 July 2026 as a longstanding disadvantage for residents seeking credit “purely on the basis of where they live.” The new sharing arrangement addresses an identification and access problem; it does not remove lenders’ responsibility to assess affordability, risk and eligibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Jersey Consumer Council said on 7 July 2026 that the practical effect would become clearer as applications were processed. In other words, the change may improve the ability to match an applicant with identity information, but it does not prescribe how a bank will score, price or approve an application.

How to opt out of future government data sharing

If you do not want future updates sent under the arrangement, change your data-sharing preference online at services.gov.je or contact the Employment, Social Security and Housing Department on +44 (0) 1534 444444.

  1. Submit the opt-out through the online data-sharing preference service, or make the request by telephone.
  2. Keep confirmation of the change and the date it took effect.
  3. Ask the department what will happen to any pending update if you have recently changed address or personal details.

An opt-out stops future sharing; it does not recall information already sent to Experian or Equifax. The Government says information already shared remains with the CRAs and that no further updates will be sent after the opt-out. It also warns that opting out may affect access to some financial products. That warning means the decision has a trade-off: you retain more control over future government disclosures, but a provider may have less information available for its identity or credit checks.

Opting out and requesting a copy are separate actions. You can ask a CRA what it already holds even if you later choose to stop future Government updates. Conversely, opting out does not erase an account, judgment or other information supplied by a lender or another record holder.

What to do if the report is wrong

Use a source-first correction route. A CRA can correct the way it records or displays information, but it may not be able to change an account detail supplied by a lender.

  1. Identify the exact entry. Note the account or judgment reference, dates, amount, status and the particular detail you believe is inaccurate. Distinguish a factual error from an entry you simply do not recognise.
  2. Dispute it with the CRA. Explain what is wrong and provide supporting evidence. Ask the CRA to confirm the outcome in writing and keep the case or reference number.
  3. Contact the original lender if necessary. If the CRA says the information came from a bank, card provider or other lender, send the same correction request to that organisation. The source provider may have to amend its own record before the CRA can update the file.
  4. Check for linked identity details. A wrong address, date of birth or name spelling can cause another person’s information to be matched to you. Tell the CRA exactly which identifying detail is incorrect and supply evidence that supports the correction.
  5. Escalate an unresolved dispute. The Government’s CRA Q&A points to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner if neither the CRA nor the lender will correct inaccurate personal data.

Do not assume that an unfamiliar entry is automatically fraudulent or that a spelling difference proves an account is not yours. First ask the CRA for the source and context, then report suspected identity misuse through the appropriate financial-crime or law-enforcement channel if the facts support that concern. Keep copies of correspondence and avoid sending irreplaceable originals.

How Jersey court judgments appear in the local record trail

Jersey judgments have a local process that is separate from the Government’s identity-data feed to Experian and Equifax. Citizens Advice Jersey says judgment information is published in the Jersey Business Brief and can be inspected at the Court Registry.

For a judgment that has been paid, the Citizens Advice guidance says to obtain written proof from the creditor and provide it to Channel Islands Data Services. Registry Trust also holds Petty Debts Court records. The Citizens Advice page was updated on 19 November 2024, so procedural details may change; confirm the current requirements with the relevant registry or advice service before sending documents.

If a paid judgment still appears as unpaid, gather the creditor’s written confirmation, the judgment reference and the date of payment. Send copies—not irreplaceable originals—and ask the record holder to confirm when the status will be amended. If the judgment itself is disputed rather than merely marked with the wrong status, seek advice on the court process as well as contacting the CRA.

A local judgment check is particularly important where your application depends on a debt that was settled. The CRA’s presentation, the creditor’s underlying information and the Court Registry record may need to be considered together.

What lenders can—and cannot—conclude from the arrangement

Sharing your name, address and date of birth helps a provider match an application to identity data and perform its own checks. It does not transfer the Government’s entire records to a bank, establish that you have a good credit history or compel a lender to approve an application.

The Jersey Consumer Council said on 7 July 2026 that the practical effect would become clearer as applications were processed. Each lender remains free to apply its own affordability, income, residency, fraud and risk policies. An application can therefore be declined even when your CRA file is accurate, and an opt-in does not guarantee a credit offer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nor should a successful identity match be treated as evidence that every account has been reported correctly. Review the actual CRA information and challenge inaccuracies before relying on it in a time-sensitive application.

Common mistakes Jersey residents should avoid

  • Confusing a report with a score: ask for the underlying information, not only a numerical score or marketing summary.
  • Assuming one agency is complete: the Government shares with Experian and Equifax, but the evidence does not establish that either file contains every Jersey record.
  • Importing UK procedures without checking: electoral-roll rules, UK consumer portals and UK statutory guidance may not apply to a Jersey address.
  • Expecting an opt-out to erase history: it prevents future government updates; it does not remove data already sent.
  • Disputing only the display layer: where a lender supplied the data, ask that lender to correct the source as well as asking the CRA to amend its file.
  • Relying on an old court-record instruction: local judgment procedures can change, so verify the current process before submitting proof of payment.
  • Waiting until the day you apply: an unfamiliar entry may require contact with both a CRA and a lender, so leave time to document the issue.
  • Paying for an unnecessary product: the Government’s Q&A describes a free copy request; a paid monitoring service is not required simply to ask what information is held.

A practical review checklist

When your file arrives, work through it systematically:

  • Check your name, current and previous residential addresses, and date of birth.
  • Look for accounts, applications or judgments you do not recognise.
  • Check account status, payment history, balances and default or settlement dates against your own records.
  • Mark duplicate entries and information that belongs to another person with a similar name or address.
  • Check that a paid judgment is described as paid and that the reference and creditor details are consistent with your documents.
  • Record the CRA’s reference number and the date you disputed each item.
  • Keep lender correspondence, proof of payment and any Court Registry or creditor documents with the report.
  • Store the report and identity documents securely and share them only through official channels.

Reviewing before applying gives you time to correct a source record. It also lets you explain a legitimate entry—such as a paid judgment—to a lender instead of discovering the issue during an urgent application. If two agencies show different information, list the difference precisely and ask each agency which source supplied the entry.

Privacy and the legal limits on government sharing

The Register of Names and Addresses (Jersey) Law 2012, in its consolidated form accessed 13 October 2026, sets the permitted fields and purposes for the arrangement. The Government’s guidance applies to residents aged 18 and over and describes the shared fields as name, residential address and date of birth. The legal purposes include credit-application vetting, specified anti-money-laundering checks and anonymised statistics; it is not an unrestricted transfer of every government-held financial detail.

If you want to know what a CRA itself holds, the correct route remains a free access request to that CRA. If you want to stop future government updates, use the services.gov.je preference service or the telephone number above. Those are separate decisions: requesting your file gives you visibility, while opting out changes future government disclosures.

For questions about the Government’s use of the arrangement, use the department’s current guidance. For questions about entries in a CRA file, start with the CRA; for an underlying lender record, contact the lender; and for an unresolved personal-data correction, the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner is the escalation point identified in the Government’s Q&A.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my credit report if I live in Jersey?

Contact the relevant CRA directly and request the personal information it holds about you. The Government of Jersey says the copy request is free and can be made verbally or in writing. Ask the agency how it handles Jersey addresses rather than assuming a UK consumer portal will work.

Is a Jersey credit report free?

The Government’s 28 July 2023 CRA Q&A says an access copy is free. You do not need to buy a score or monitoring package merely to ask what information the CRA holds.

What information does the Government share with Experian and Equifax?

Since 30 July 2026, for residents aged 18 and over unless they opt out, the Government shares name, residential address and date of birth. The arrangement does not send a complete government credit report or score.

Can I opt out after information has been shared?

Yes. Change your preference at services.gov.je or call the Employment, Social Security and Housing Department on +44 (0) 1534 444444. An opt-out stops future updates but does not recall information already sent to the CRAs, and the Government warns it may affect access to some financial products.

Who fixes an incorrect lender entry?

Dispute the entry with the CRA and contact the lender or other organisation that supplied the information. The source provider may need to amend its own record before the CRA can update its file. If neither will correct inaccurate personal data, the Government’s Q&A points to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner.

Where can I check a Jersey court judgment?

Citizens Advice Jersey says judgment information is published in the Jersey Business Brief and can be inspected at the Court Registry. It identifies Channel Islands Data Services for proof of payment in the relevant process and says Registry Trust holds Petty Debts Court records. Because its page was updated on 19 November 2024, confirm current requirements before relying on those steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does sharing my details guarantee a credit card or loan?

No. The sharing is intended to help identity and credit checks. Lenders still decide using their own affordability, income, residency, fraud and risk policies, so an accurate file or a successful identity match does not guarantee approval.

The Bottom Line

Request your CRA-held information directly and free of charge, checking Experian and Equifax where relevant. Review identity details, accounts and judgments; correct errors with both the CRA and the original source; and use services.gov.je or +44 (0) 1534 444444 if you want to stop future Government updates. Jersey’s 30 July 2026 data sharing can support checks, but it is limited identity information—not a complete report, score or promise of lending.
