How to Check Your Credit Report for Accounts Opened by a Scammer

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you suspect a scammer opened credit in your name, check all three U.S. nationwide credit reports, document every unfamiliar entry, report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and contact both the business and the credit bureaus. You can obtain the reports free through AnnualCreditReport.com; current FTC recovery guidance says you may check them weekly for free.

Do not wait for a bill or collection call. The FTC lists “You find unfamiliar accounts or charges on your credit report” as a warning sign of identity theft. Treat an account you do not recognize as a lead to investigate, not as proof that the creditor made a mistake.

1. Get all three credit reports

Order reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A scammer’s account may appear on only one report, so checking a single bureau can leave the fraud undiscovered.

Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized source named in FTC recovery guidance. The FTC says consumers can check their reports every week for free. You can also use the phone number listed on that site if you cannot complete the request online.

Use the official request channel

  • Type the website address yourself rather than following an unsolicited email, text or social-media link.
  • Download or save each report as a separate file and note the date obtained.
  • Have identification information available, because the bureaus use questions to verify that you are the person requesting the file.
  • Keep the reports in a secure location. They contain sensitive personal and account information.

Why all three reports matter

Creditors do not necessarily report to every bureau. One report may show a new card while another shows only the resulting collection account or inquiry. Comparing the three files also helps you see whether the same fraudulent account was furnished inconsistently.

2. Read each report line by line

Work through every section, not just the account-summary page. Mark anything you did not apply for, authorize or recognize. An unfamiliar account, transaction or other entry is worth investigating even when the balance is zero or the account is already closed.

Entries to examine

  • Open credit-card, personal-loan, retail-credit and other accounts.
  • Accounts marked closed, charged off, transferred or sent to collections.
  • New inquiries that coincide with an application you did not make.
  • Balances, payment histories or account-opening dates that do not fit your own activity.
  • Personal information, such as an address or employer, that you do not recognize and that could indicate a broader misuse of your identity.

Do not assume an entry is legitimate because the creditor’s name is unfamiliar. A lender may report under a parent company, bank subsidiary or servicing company. Search the creditor’s contact information independently and ask its fraud department to identify the account. Do not use a phone number supplied in a suspicious message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the details while you investigate

Create a separate record for each suspected account. Include the creditor or furnisher, account number (mask all but the last few digits in your working notes), account type, opening date, balance, collection agency if listed, and the bureau or bureaus displaying it. Record the report date and save a copy of the page showing the entry.

Also note dates, names or identification numbers of representatives, phone numbers used, documents requested and every promise made. A chronological file prevents you from having to reconstruct the case later and gives you evidence if the account reappears.

3. Create an FTC Identity Theft Report

Submit the incident at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC site produces an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Save or print both documents immediately, along with the confirmation details.

What to include

  • Every fraudulent account or inquiry you found, including the reporting bureau.
  • How you learned about the account and when you first noticed it.
  • Any contact you have already had with the creditor, collector or bank.
  • Related misuse, such as an unauthorized application, charge or address change.

Keep the report with your credit-report copies and identity documents. The FTC Identity Theft Report is important because it supports a request to block information that resulted from identity theft. If you do not have an FTC report, you can still dispute inaccurate information, but the FTC says that route may take longer and does not guarantee removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Contact the business that opened or reported the account

Contact the creditor, lender, retailer or collection agency behind each fraudulent entry. Ask for the fraud department, explain that you did not open or authorize the account, and request that it be closed or flagged as fraudulent.

Ask for written confirmation

Request a letter stating that:

  • the account was opened or used fraudulently;
  • you are not responsible for the debt;
  • the business has closed the account or stopped collection activity; and
  • the business has instructed the credit bureaus to remove or correct its reporting.

Ask when the business will send updates to each bureau and how you will be notified. Keep the letter even after the entry disappears; an account can return if a furnisher later resubmits information.

Send the documents the business requires

The business may request your FTC Identity Theft Report, proof of identity, a police report or its own fraud affidavit. Supply only what is reasonably required, send copies rather than irreplaceable originals, and use a traceable delivery method when mailing documents. Follow the business’s instructions, but do not sign an admission that you owe the account.

Ask for the underlying application

If the business disputes your claim or you need stronger evidence, request records connected with the identity theft, including the application and the applicant’s signature. Write to the business that holds the records and include a copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report. Keep a copy of your request and proof of delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Request a block from each credit bureau

Send a separate request to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Include the FTC Identity Theft Report, proof of identity and a letter that clearly identifies every fraudulent item you want blocked. Identify the creditor, partial account number, account-opening date and the report page where the item appears.

Your bureau packet should contain

  • A copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report.
  • Proof of identity, such as the identification document the bureau accepts.
  • Proof of your current address if requested.
  • A list of each fraudulent entry and the action you want: block the identity-theft information and stop reporting it.
  • Copies of the business’s written confirmation, if you have received it.

Use the bureau’s current identity-theft or dispute instructions and retain a complete copy of everything submitted. Send documents through a trackable method when the instructions permit mail, or save electronic submission confirmations.

What the block does

FTC guidance says a bureau must honor a request to block information resulting from identity theft when you provide an FTC Identity Theft Report and the other required information. A block prevents the bureau from reporting that identity-theft information, but it does not resolve unrelated inaccuracies or erase legitimate accounts. If a bureau asks for clarification, respond promptly and keep the request in your case file.

If you do not have an FTC report

You may dispute information you believe is inaccurate through the ordinary dispute process. The FTC cautions that disputes without an Identity Theft Report can take longer and do not guarantee that the information will be removed. Obtaining the FTC report first generally gives you the documentation needed for the identity-theft blocking procedure.

6. Choose protection against new accounts

After reporting the existing fraud, add a fraud alert, a credit freeze, or both. They are free, but they work differently.

Protection How it works How to place it Effect on legitimate applications Duration in FTC guidance
Initial fraud alert Asks prospective creditors to verify your identity before extending new credit. Contact one nationwide bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. You can still apply for credit, although verification may add a step or delay. One year.
Extended fraud alert Provides a longer warning for eligible identity-theft victims. Follow the bureau’s requirements, which include identity-theft documentation. Creditors may take additional steps to verify applications. Seven years, according to FTC rights guidance.
Credit freeze Limits access to your credit report, subject to exceptions allowed by law, making it harder to open many new accounts in your name. Request it separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You may need to lift or remove the freeze before applying for credit that requires a report; use the bureau’s process and timing instructions. Until you lift or remove it.

Fraud alert: best when you need credit available

A one-year alert is useful if you expect to apply for a loan, lease or card and do not want to manage three separate freeze accounts. You place it with one bureau, and that bureau shares it with the other two. An alert does not block access to your report and cannot guarantee that every fraudulent application will be stopped.

Freeze: strongest barrier to many new-credit applications

A freeze is appropriate when preventing new-credit access is the priority. Because each bureau operates its own freeze, complete all three requests. Before a legitimate application, ask the creditor which bureau it will use and follow that bureau’s instructions to lift the freeze for the necessary period or remove it. A freeze does not remove an account that is already on a report and does not stop every form of identity theft, such as misuse of an existing account.

7. If the scammer opened a checking account

Checking-account identity theft is handled separately from the three nationwide credit reports. Request your free ChexSystems report if you suspect someone opened a checking account in your name. Review it for unfamiliar inquiries or account records, then contact every financial institution where an account was opened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tell the institution’s fraud department that you did not open or authorize the account, ask it to close the account and stop transactions, and request written confirmation. Checking-account screening information does not replace checking Equifax, Experian and TransUnion when credit fraud is also possible.

8. Follow up until the reports are clean

After the business and bureaus receive your documents, continue checking all three reports. The FTC says weekly free access is available through AnnualCreditReport.com, so use that access to verify that the fraudulent entries and related inquiries have been blocked or corrected.

Maintain a case file

  • The original three reports and each later report showing the change.
  • Your FTC Identity Theft Report and recovery plan.
  • Letters, online confirmations, receipts and fax or upload confirmations.
  • Written responses from creditors, collectors and bureaus.
  • A dated call log with representative names and promised actions.

If an account returns, contact the business and the bureau again with the earlier written confirmation and your original submission records. Explain that the same identity-theft item has been reinserted and ask what additional documentation is required.

9. Common problems and the practical response

The creditor says the account is yours

Ask for the application and signature records, account-opening information and the specific evidence supporting its conclusion. Send the creditor your FTC Identity Theft Report and repeat your request for closure and written confirmation. Dispute the entry with each bureau that reports it rather than relying only on the creditor’s internal investigation.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The account appears on only one report

Dispute it with the bureau showing the entry and still review the other two reports for related inquiries, addresses or accounts. A creditor may update bureaus at different times.

You have not received a bill

Act on the report entry anyway. An unfamiliar account is an FTC-listed warning sign even before a statement, collection notice or fraud call arrives.

You recognize the company but not the account

Contact the company through independently verified contact information. A legitimate company may have a different reporting name, but its fraud department can determine whether the account belongs to you or was opened using your information.

You are applying for credit soon

Place an alert if you need uninterrupted access to your reports. If you choose a freeze, identify which bureau the lender will use and arrange a temporary lift before submitting the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. A concise action checklist

  1. Obtain current Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports from AnnualCreditReport.com.
  2. Mark every unfamiliar account, inquiry, transaction or personal-information change.
  3. Record the creditor, account details, reporting bureau and discovery date.
  4. Submit the incident at IdentityTheft.gov and save the FTC Identity Theft Report and recovery plan.
  5. Contact each business’s fraud department; request closure, no liability and written confirmation.
  6. Request account applications and signature records when more evidence is needed.
  7. Send each bureau your FTC report, proof of identity and a precise list of fraudulent entries for blocking.
  8. Place a one-year fraud alert with one bureau or a freeze separately with all three.
  9. Request a ChexSystems report if checking-account misuse is possible.
  10. Check the reports regularly and preserve the entire paper trail until the corrections remain in place.
