Request all three nationwide credit reports—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—review each one separately, and dispute any errors before you submit a loan application. You can check your own reports without lowering your credit score. The review helps you correct inaccurate information and recognize what a lender may see, but it does not guarantee approval or show the exact score or underwriting rules a particular lender will use.
Why check your credit report before applying?
A credit report is a record of information reported about your borrowing and repayment history. It can include identifying details, credit-card and loan accounts, payment history, balances, credit limits, collection accounts, and inquiries. A credit score is different: it is a number calculated by a scoring model from information in a report. A lender’s decision is different again. Lenders combine one or more reports and scores with their own income, debt, employment, collateral, and policy requirements.

Reviewing your files in advance gives you time to identify an account that is not yours, a payment marked late when it was paid on time, an incorrect balance, or an outdated personal detail. You can then gather documentation and submit a focused dispute before the lender reviews your application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Checking your own report is a soft inquiry and does not hurt your score.
- The three nationwide reporting companies may hold different information because creditors do not necessarily report every item to every company.
- A report review cannot reveal with certainty which score model, report, or underwriting criteria a specific lender will use.
When should I review my credit report?
Review a report before you begin shopping for a loan, not just the day you apply. Start early enough to investigate unfamiliar accounts and send supporting records if an item is wrong. A second review shortly before applying can confirm whether a correction appears and can catch a new change.

There is no score penalty for checking your own file, so you can review it whenever you need to make a financial decision. CFPB guidance says consumers can review their reports online weekly for free. The general access terms and any temporary offers can change, so confirm the current terms when you request the reports.
How much time should you allow?
The time needed depends on what you find. A clean report can be reviewed in one sitting. If an account is unfamiliar or a balance, date, or payment status is inaccurate, allow time to collect statements, payment confirmations, identity documents, or other records and to submit disputes to the appropriate parties. Do not wait until a lender has already pulled your report if you can avoid it.
How to get all three reports for free
Use the official route to obtain reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Requesting only one report can miss an error that appears at another company.
Recommended Free Tools
- Go to AnnualCreditReport.com, the official source for the nationwide reporting companies, and follow the request process for each bureau. You may also request reports by calling 877-322-8228.
- Request Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports individually. Save or download each report in a secure location and note the date you accessed it.
- Read the access terms shown at the time of your request. CFPB guidance describes online access as available weekly for free. It also describes a temporary allowance of up to six additional Equifax reports during a 12-month period through December 2026, in addition to the general free-report entitlement. Because that Equifax allowance is time-limited, verify that it is still available when you apply.
- Use the official route rather than a site that advertises a free report but requires you to buy another product or cancel a billed service. A paid monitoring subscription is not required to retrieve or dispute a report.
Protect the reports after downloading them. They contain personal and account information, so avoid posting them publicly and use a secure device and connection when accessing them.
Review the three reports separately
Do not assume that one report represents all three. Reporting companies can receive different information, update on different schedules, or omit an account that another company lists. Compare the same categories across all three files, but evaluate every report on its own terms.

| Report | What to verify | Why the comparison matters |
|---|---|---|
| Equifax | Your identity, accounts, status, payment history, dates, balances, limits, and inquiries | An item may appear here even when it is absent or different on another report. |
| Experian | Your identity, accounts, status, payment history, dates, balances, limits, and inquiries | Different creditors may report to this company, or report different updates. |
| TransUnion | Your identity, accounts, status, payment history, dates, balances, limits, and inquiries | Comparing the same account across files can reveal a mismatch or duplicate. |
There is no universally superior bureau. The useful question is which company holds a particular item and whether the information is accurate.
What are common credit report errors that I should look for on my credit report?
Identity and personal-information mistakes
- Confirm that the report belongs to you.
- Look for an incorrect name, former address that is not yours, wrong date of birth, or other identifying information that could cause another person’s file to be mixed with yours.
- Check whether an account lists you as the owner when you were only an authorized user, or lists the wrong owner or co-borrower.
A misspelled name or former address is not automatically a scoring error, but an identity mismatch deserves attention because it can indicate mixed files or make an unfamiliar account harder to evaluate.
Accounts you do not recognize
Scan every credit card, line of credit, installment loan, collection account, and other tradeline. An unfamiliar account can result from identity theft, a creditor using a different business name, or an account on which you were an authorized user. Check the creditor name, opening date, account number ending, ownership designation, and balance before deciding that it is fraudulent.
If the account truly does not belong to you, treat it as a potential identity-theft issue. Follow the reporting and recovery steps at IdentityTheft.gov and dispute the account with the reporting company and the furnisher.
Account status and payment history
For each account, verify whether it is shown as open, closed, paid, in collection, charged off, or otherwise reported. Check every reported late payment and its month and year. A paid account should not be shown as currently unpaid, and a payment should not be marked late if your records show it was timely. Do not assume that a familiar creditor means every field is correct.

Dates, balances, and credit limits
Compare the opening date, closing date when applicable, date of last payment, date updated, current balance, past-due amount, and credit limit with your statements and lender records. A balance that is much higher than your latest statement, a limit that is too low, or a date that places an account in the wrong period can affect how a lender interprets your file.

Look for the same debt listed more than once, especially when a collection account and the original account appear in a way that incorrectly counts the obligation twice. Review the inquiries section as well. An inquiry you do not recognize should be investigated, although an inquiry alone does not prove that an account was opened fraudulently.
Does requesting my credit report hurt my credit score?
No, requesting your own credit report does not hurt your credit score. Your request is a soft inquiry. It is different from a lender’s hard inquiry after you apply for credit. A hard inquiry may affect a score, depending on the scoring model and the circumstances.
Checking your files before applying is therefore a protective step, not a score penalty. It lets you identify problems before a lender makes a hard inquiry. The report you obtain may also show inquiries made by other companies, so distinguish your own access from applications or account reviews initiated by creditors.
Report, score, and lender decision: keep them distinct

The report is the underlying file of reported information. It does not contain a single universal score, and the three companies may not show identical records.

Your score
A score is a model-based number calculated from report data. A score you buy or receive through an online service may differ from the score a particular lender uses because lenders can choose different scoring models, versions, and data sources.
The lender’s decision
Approval, interest rate, loan amount, and terms depend on the lender’s underwriting criteria as well as credit information. Your report review cannot guarantee approval or identify the exact model and bureau that will be used. Use the review to correct factual problems and understand your file, not as a promise of a particular outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I dispute an error on my credit report?
Dispute a specific inaccuracy with both the reporting company that displays it and the creditor, debt collector, or other furnisher that supplied the information. Sending the dispute to only one party can leave the same incorrect data at the other source.
- Identify the exact item. Record the bureau, creditor or furnisher name, account number ending, field that is wrong, and the correct information.
- Explain why it is inaccurate. State the facts plainly—for example, that an account is not yours, a payment was made on time, a balance is incorrect, or the same debt is duplicated.
- Attach supporting records. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals, of statements, payment confirmations, correspondence, identity-theft records, or other documents that support your position.
- Use the dispute instructions provided by each party. Follow the reporting company’s submission method and the furnisher’s stated address or online process. A separate dispute is appropriate when the error appears on more than one report.
- Keep a complete file. Save the report page showing the error, your explanation, attachments, submission date, confirmation number, and any later response.
- Review the result. After the investigation, obtain an updated report or confirmation and check whether the specific field was corrected. If the information is still wrong, use the response instructions to provide additional documentation or take the next available complaint or dispute step.
CFPB guidance says reporting companies and furnishers have a legal duty to investigate qualifying disputes without charge. You do not need to pay a credit-repair service to submit a factual dispute yourself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat makes a dispute useful?
- It identifies one concrete error instead of making a broad accusation about the entire report.
- It explains the correct version and connects that explanation to an attached record.
- It names every bureau where the error appears.
- It avoids sending unnecessary sensitive information or original documents.
If the company verifies information that is actually accurate, a dispute is not a way to remove a negative item merely because it is unfavorable. The purpose is to correct information that is incomplete, misleading, or factually wrong.

What to do when an unfamiliar account may be identity theft
First, check whether the account could belong to a joint applicant, former spouse, authorized-user relationship, or creditor whose name differs from the brand you recognize. If none of those explanations fits, preserve the report and account details and use the IdentityTheft.gov process for a recovery plan. Dispute the account with every reporting company that lists it and with the furnisher. Change exposed account credentials and contact the legitimate creditor through a verified channel rather than using contact information in a suspicious message.
Keep identity-theft documentation with your dispute records. It can help explain why the account is not yours and lets you respond consistently if more than one bureau lists related entries.
Should you buy credit monitoring or a score before applying?
No paid product is necessary to retrieve the official reports or dispute inaccuracies. Monitoring can be an optional way to receive alerts, but it does not replace reading the reports themselves, and an alert does not establish that an item is inaccurate. If you purchase a score, treat it as an educational estimate: the lender may use a different model and may obtain data from a different bureau.
Be cautious with websites that advertise a free report but require enrollment in another product or make cancellation difficult. Use AnnualCreditReport.com or the published 877-322-8228 route for the official free reports.
A practical pre-application checklist
- Request Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion reports through the official route.
- Record the date of each report and keep the files secure.
- Confirm your identity information and ownership or authorized-user status.
- Review every account’s status, payment history, dates, balance, limit, and past-due amount.
- Check for duplicate accounts, unfamiliar accounts, and inquiries you do not recognize.
- Compare the same account across all three reports without assuming they should be identical.
- Gather statements and other records for each suspected error.
- Dispute the item with every bureau that reports it and with the furnisher.
- Save your submissions and review the investigation result.
- Only then submit loan applications, understanding that the lender’s score model and underwriting rules may differ from what you saw.
What a report check can—and cannot—tell you
| It can help you | It cannot establish |
|---|---|
| Find inaccurate personal details, accounts, payment statuses, balances, limits, dates, duplicates, or inquiries. | That a lender will approve the loan. |
| See which of the three reporting companies lists a particular item. | Which bureau or score model a specific lender will use. |
| Prepare a documented dispute before a lender reviews your file. | The exact score a lender will calculate from its own data and model. |
| Check your file without lowering your score. | The lender’s full income, debt, collateral, or other underwriting assessment. |
That distinction is why a careful report review is worthwhile even when your score appears strong: accurate records support a reliable application, while the final decision remains the lender’s.
