How to Check Whether You’re Eligible for Social Security Coverage

The fastest way to check possible Social Security eligibility is to use the Social Security Administration (SSA) eligibility screener, then sign in to a my Social Security account to review your Statement, earnings record and benefit estimates. The screener asks about your age, work, disability, family situation and financial need, identifies benefits you may qualify for now and points to application steps. It is not a promise of future eligibility: SSA says, “We can’t determine if you’ll become eligible in the future.”

Eligibility depends on the specific coverage you mean. Retirement, disability, survivor, family, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicare programs use different rules. Your own work credits may be central, or a spouse’s, parent’s or deceased worker’s record may matter more. Use the process below to identify the right program and the records SSA will use.

Start with the SSA eligibility screener

Open SSA’s online eligibility screener and choose the circumstance that best matches your question. The tool covers retirement, disability or blindness, the loss of a spouse or parent, and difficulty paying for essentials. SSA says the questionnaire takes 10 minutes or less. It evaluates circumstances that exist now and directs you to the relevant application information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Have basic details available, including your age, work history, disability information if applicable, and family relationship to a worker. Answer each question for the person whose eligibility you are checking. For survivor benefits, that may be a deceased worker rather than you.

What the screener can and cannot tell you

  • It can identify programs for which your current facts may fit and explain how to apply.
  • It cannot make a final award decision, calculate every exception or guarantee that you will qualify later.
  • A screening result is not a substitute for SSA’s application, medical review or verification of earnings and family records.

If the screener indicates a possible benefit, continue to the application instructions rather than waiting for a separate eligibility letter.

Check your Statement and earnings record in my Social Security

A free my Social Security account is the practical place to inspect the information SSA uses. The online Social Security Statement shows your recorded earnings history and personalized estimates for retirement, disability and survivors benefits.

How to review the record

  1. Sign in to your my Social Security account, or create one through SSA’s identity-verification process.
  2. Open your Social Security Statement and review every year of reported earnings.
  3. Check the credit and benefit information shown for retirement, disability and survivor coverage.
  4. Compare the record with your tax documents, wage statements and self-employment records.
  5. Note any missing or incorrect year before you apply, because SSA may need evidence to correct it.

People who do not have an account and do not receive benefits are generally mailed a paper Statement three months before their 60th birthday. You can request a Statement sooner; an online account is usually faster for ongoing checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why earnings accuracy matters

Credits establish insured status in programs that use a work test, but your payment estimate is based primarily on covered earnings and the timing of your claim. SSA says the average of earnings over your working years, not the total number of credits, determines the monthly retirement benefit. A missing year can therefore affect both eligibility and the estimated amount.

Account estimates are planning tools. They are not an official determination on a pending application, and they can change when additional earnings are posted, when you claim, or when law and annual parameters change.

Understand work credits before judging eligibility

Work credits (also called quarters of coverage) are earned from wages or self-employment income on which Social Security taxes are paid. You can earn no more than four credits in one calendar year.

2026 covered earnings Credits earned What the figure means
$1,890 1 credit SSA’s 2026 amount for one credit, subject to covered earnings being reported.
$7,560 4 credits The 2026 earnings needed to reach the annual maximum of four credits.

These dollar amounts apply to 2026 and can change each year. They are thresholds for counting credits, not a measure of your eventual monthly payment. The amount of covered earnings counted for benefit calculations is also capped; SSA lists a maximum taxable earnings figure of $184,500 for 2026. That ceiling is separate from the credit threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use the credit figures

Use the annual figures as a way to understand what your Statement is showing, not as a substitute for the Statement itself. Someone who earns enough covered income to reach the annual maximum can receive only four credits for that year; additional earnings do not create a fifth credit. Conversely, a year with less than the amount needed for one credit may not add any credit to the record. SSA’s account is the authoritative place to see which credits have actually been posted.

Credit totals answer an insured-status question. They do not tell you whether a disability meets SSA’s definition, whether a family relationship qualifies, or how much a monthly benefit will be. Those questions require the program-specific rules and, ultimately, an application review.

Match the check to the benefit you mean

Do not apply a retirement rule to a disability or survivor question. The relevant work record, age, recency of work and non-work requirements vary by program.

Retirement benefits

Retirement eligibility generally requires that you are at least 62 and have at least 10 years of work with Social Security taxes paid, usually represented by 40 credits. Your Statement shows whether your record appears to meet that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eligibility and payment size are separate. Credits establish insured status; lifetime covered earnings and the age at which you start benefits affect the estimate. A person with 40 credits may have a very different monthly amount from another person with the same credit total.

Disability benefits

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) requires a qualifying disability as well as enough work history. SSA applies both a recent-work test and a duration test. The required credits depend on your age when the disability begins.

Age when disability begins General recent-work example Important qualification
Younger than 24 Six credits in the three-year period ending when disability starts. This is an example of SSA’s age-based table, not a complete statement of every rule.
24 through 30 Generally credits for half the time between age 21 and disability onset. The exact count changes with age and the onset date.
31 or older Generally at least 20 credits in the 10 years immediately before disability begins. The duration test and other exceptions still apply.

SSA describes these figures as estimates within its table, not a complete account of all situations. A disability claim also requires medical and vocational review; a credit total alone cannot establish disability.

When checking disability eligibility, record the date you believe the disability began and whether you were working recently. The same total number of lifetime credits can produce different results depending on when the recent credits were earned. If you are close to an age-based threshold, ask SSA to apply its table to your exact onset date rather than relying on a general example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Survivor benefits

Survivor benefits can be payable to qualifying family members of a worker who paid Social Security taxes. The deceased worker’s required credits depend on the worker’s age at death. A special rule may allow children and a spouse caring for the worker’s children to qualify when the worker had six credits in the three years before death.

Family members claiming on a worker’s record generally do not need their own work credits. They must still satisfy relationship, age, caregiving or other program requirements. When checking a survivor claim, gather the worker’s Social Security number if available, death certificate information and documents showing the family relationship.

The worker’s age at death matters, so do not assume that the retirement benchmark of 40 credits applies. Start with the deceased person’s Statement when available, then ask SSA which survivor category applies to each claimant. A child and a surviving spouse may be evaluated under different relationship or caregiving rules even though both rely on the same worker’s record.

Family benefits while a worker is living

A spouse, former spouse or child may qualify on a worker’s record even when the family member has little or no work history. The worker’s insured status and the claimant’s relationship and age rules are considered together. Review the worker’s Statement and ask SSA which family-benefit category fits; do not assume that your own credit total controls the claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check SSI separately from Social Security insurance benefits

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a separate needs-based program. It considers age, disability or blindness, income and resources rather than relying only on a worker’s payroll-tax record. Some people may qualify for SSI and Social Security benefits at the same time, but a separate application may be required.

Use the SSI pathway when the concern is inability to meet basic expenses, limited income or resources, or disability/blindness without enough insured work history. The eligibility screener can point you there, but an SSI decision requires financial information in addition to the work record shown in your Statement.

When comparing SSI with an insurance benefit, separate the questions: Does the person have enough covered work for an insured benefit? Does the person meet SSI’s income and resource requirements? Could both routes apply? A favorable answer to one does not automatically answer the others.

Do not confuse Social Security eligibility with Medicare coverage

Medicare has its own eligibility routes. SSA identifies age 65, end-stage renal disease and receipt of disability benefits as pathways to Medicare. A person asking whether they are “covered” should specify whether they mean a Social Security cash benefit, SSI or health coverage. The correct SSA application and timing depend on that answer.

Use a decision checklist when more than one route may apply

Work through these questions before you interpret the screener or your Statement:

  • Which program? Retirement, disability, survivor/family, SSI or Medicare.
  • Whose record? Your earnings, a current or former spouse’s, a parent’s or a deceased worker’s.
  • What circumstance? Age, disability onset, death, caregiving responsibility or financial need.
  • How many credits? Total credits and, for disability or some survivor cases, credits earned recently.
  • Are income and resources relevant? They are central to SSI and generally not the same test used for retirement insurance.
  • Are you estimating or applying? A Statement estimate helps planning; only SSA’s application review creates an individualized determination.

Compare possible routes side by side

Question Retirement Disability Survivor/family SSI
Whose record? Usually your own Usually your own Worker’s record Not based only on insured work
Work-credit focus Generally 40 credits Recent-work and duration tests Depends on worker’s age and situation Income and resources are central
Other central factor Age and claim timing Qualifying disability and medical review Relationship, age or caregiving Age, disability/blindness, income and resources

This comparison is a sorting tool, not a decision. If two columns appear to fit, use the screener for both and ask SSA whether separate applications are needed.

Fix an earnings-record problem before you rely on an estimate

If a year is missing or the amount is wrong, first collect documents that show the work and pay, such as Forms W-2, tax returns, pay stubs or employer records. The evidence needed can vary with the year and type of work.

  1. Write down the tax year, employer or business, and the amount you believe should be recorded.
  2. Gather copies of supporting documents and keep the originals.
  3. Contact SSA through its official service channels and explain that the earnings record needs correction.
  4. Ask what additional proof or form is required for that year.
  5. After SSA updates the record, review the Statement again to confirm the change.

Do not assume that an estimate will automatically correct itself. If you are close to an eligibility threshold or preparing an application, address discrepancies before deciding that you lack coverage.

Keep a dated note of what you reported, which documents you supplied and whether SSA requested anything else. This makes it easier to explain a discrepancy if the record still does not change. Check both the earnings amount and the credit information: an amount can look plausible while a year is still absent from the insured-status calculation.

Move from a possible match to an official application

When the screener or your records suggest that you may qualify, follow SSA’s application instructions for that benefit. The application is where SSA verifies identity, earnings, family relationships, disability evidence and other requirements.

Information commonly needed

  • Your Social Security number and birth information.
  • Employer names, dates worked and self-employment details.
  • Bank information for direct deposit, if requested.
  • Medical providers, treatment dates and medications for a disability claim.
  • Marriage, divorce, birth or death records for family and survivor claims.
  • Income and resource information for SSI.

Apply through SSA even if your online estimate looks favorable. Conversely, do not abandon a possible claim solely because the estimate is low or a credit count appears incomplete; ask SSA to review the underlying record and rules.

Prepare for an SSA conversation

Write down the program you are asking about, whose record should be examined, the dates involved and any question raised by your Statement. Ask which requirement is not yet shown, whether a missing earnings year can be corrected, and whether another family member should file separately. This keeps a general “am I covered?” question from being answered with the wrong program’s rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes that produce the wrong answer

Using 40 credits as a universal rule

Forty credits is the usual retirement benchmark, not a general Social Security requirement. Disability uses age-based recent-work and duration tests, and survivor requirements vary with the worker’s age and circumstances.

Counting credits as dollars

Credits do not directly set your monthly payment. Covered earnings and claiming timing drive the benefit calculation, subject to annual limits.

Checking only your own record

Family and survivor benefits can depend on another worker’s record. A spouse, child or caregiver may qualify without having enough personal credits.

Treating the screener as a future guarantee

The screener evaluates current facts. It cannot determine whether you will become eligible in the future, and a later change in age, work, disability or family circumstances can change the result.

Assuming SSI and Social Security are interchangeable

SSI has income and resource rules and follows a separate route. A person can potentially receive both programs, but one application does not automatically settle the other.

Confusing the taxable-earnings ceiling with a credit requirement

The $184,500 maximum counted earnings figure for 2026 limits earnings used in benefit calculations. It is not the amount you must earn to qualify, and it does not change the four-credit annual maximum.

How to interpret the result

A “possible eligibility” result means you should read the application instructions and have SSA review your case. A result that does not identify a benefit may reflect missing information, a different program, an earnings-record error or a rule that requires an individualized review.

Keep a copy of your Statement, the dates you checked the screener and any documents you submit. Recheck your record after future earnings post and whenever your age, disability status or family circumstances change. For a final answer, rely on SSA’s determination after you apply, not solely on an online estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether I qualify for Social Security right now?

Use SSA’s online eligibility screener first, then review your my Social Security Statement and earnings record. If the screener identifies a possible benefit, follow the application instructions; only SSA’s application review produces an individualized determination.

How many work credits do I need for retirement?

Retirement generally requires age 62 or older and 40 credits, usually about 10 years of work with Social Security taxes paid. Credits establish insured eligibility, while covered earnings and claiming age affect the payment amount.

How many credits are required for disability benefits?

There is no single number. SSA uses recent-work and duration tests tied to age when disability begins. For example, someone younger than 24 may qualify with six credits in the three years before disability starts, while someone 31 or older generally needs at least 20 credits in the preceding 10 years, subject to the full rules and exceptions.

Can I receive benefits on someone else’s work record?

Possibly. Qualifying spouses, former spouses, children and survivors may use a worker’s record and generally do not need the same personal credit history. Relationship, age, caregiving and other requirements still apply.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if my earnings record is wrong?

Gather W-2s, tax returns, pay stubs or employer records for the missing or incorrect year. Contact SSA through its official channels, ask what proof or form is required, and review your Statement again after any correction.

Are SSI and Social Security the same program?

No. SSI is needs-based and considers age, disability or blindness, income and resources. Social Security insurance benefits rely primarily on covered work and may be payable at the same time as SSI, but a separate application may be required.

Does the eligibility screener tell me whether I will qualify later?

No. SSA states that the screener cannot determine whether you will become eligible in the future. It assesses your current circumstances, so revisit the check when your age, work, disability or family situation changes.

The Bottom Line

Check eligibility in two stages: use SSA’s current-circumstance screener, then verify the relevant work record in my Social Security. Match the rules to the program—retirement, disability, survivor/family, SSI or Medicare—correct any earnings errors, and apply through SSA for an official decision. A credit total or online estimate is useful evidence, not a final award.
