There is no universal “enough” level for workplace critical illness cover. Start with your current benefits statement, then check your policy wording and schedule for the scheme that applies to you. Confirm the insured amount, eligibility, covered conditions and definitions, exclusions, partial payments, family benefits and the date cover ends. Then compare the possible lump sum with your mortgage or rent, debts, essential spending, dependants, savings, sick pay and other insurance.
Critical illness insurance usually pays a one-off amount only when you have one of the listed conditions and meet that policy’s definition and severity threshold. A diagnosis that uses the same illness name as the policy does not, by itself, establish a claim. Your employer’s scheme terms and your personal finances determine whether the benefit is sufficient.

What “enough” means in a workplace scheme
Critical illness cover is designed to provide a lump sum after a qualifying diagnosis. It is not a general payment for any serious illness, and it is not normally a replacement for your salary while you are unable to work. The qualifying event, medical evidence and severity test are set out in the policy wording.

MoneyHelper describes the practical issue plainly: “The conditions and illnesses covered can vary significantly between different insurers.” The most comprehensive policies may list 50 different conditions or more, while other policies cover fewer conditions or narrower stages. That figure describes a possible market feature, not a standard and not the number in your employer’s plan. Read the actual definitions rather than counting condition names.

Adequacy is therefore a household calculation. A large salary multiple may still leave a gap if your housing costs or dependants’ needs are high; a smaller benefit may be sufficient when you have substantial savings or other insurance. The steps below show how to establish both the policy’s real protection and the amount your household would need.
1. Collect the documents for your current scheme
Begin with the benefits portal or HR team. Ask for documents that identify your employee category and the current policy year, not a generic brochure. Aviva’s workplace guidance tells members to use the wording and schedule applicable to their policy for the contractual details: Aviva Group Critical Illness policy information.
Keep these items together before you assess the amount:
- the latest benefits statement showing your elected or automatic benefit;
- the insurer’s policy wording and any amendments;
- your member, benefit or certificate schedule;
- the scheme rules or eligibility description;
- any separate document for partner or child benefits; and
- the claim form or claims contact details, if supplied.
Check that the employee category, salary basis and policy year on the schedule match your circumstances. If a benefits portal shows several versions, ask the administrator which one governs your cover. Record the insurer’s name and the policy number so that a later query is tied to the correct scheme.
2. Confirm the benefit amount and who is covered
Find the clause that calculates the insured amount. It may be a fixed sum or a multiple of salary. Unum’s UK group product illustrates both formats, but its arrangement is only an example; your employer may use different calculations and limits: Unum group critical illness information.
Write down the following details from your schedule:

| Item | What to verify | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Benefit basis | Fixed amount or salary multiple | A salary multiple can change when your pay changes; a fixed amount may not keep pace with household costs. |
| Salary definition | Which earnings count and when they are measured | Basic salary, eligible earnings and any cap can produce different insured sums. |
| Maximum limit | Any scheme or insurer ceiling | A stated multiple may be restricted by an upper monetary limit. |
| Eligibility | Employee class, service requirement, age or other entry rules | Being employed does not necessarily mean every worker is eligible on the same terms. |
| Start date | When cover begins and whether an actively-at-work condition applies | A benefit shown in a portal may not have started if an entry condition is unmet. |
| Family cover | Whether a partner or child benefit is included and its separate limits | Family payments can be separate from the employee lump sum and may have different definitions. |
Check whether a salary figure is updated automatically or only at a scheme anniversary. Ask HR how unpaid leave, reduced hours, a promotion, a bonus or a change of employment status affects the calculation. Do not assume that a benefits statement’s headline amount includes family cover or every optional election.

Make a list of every condition in the schedule, then find its definition in the wording. The definition usually specifies the medical event, evidence required and a severity threshold. The familiar name of a disease is not enough if the policy requires a particular stage, permanent impairment or treatment.
Cancer and other staged conditions
Check which cancers qualify and at what stage. Some wordings distinguish invasive and non-invasive disease or require a specified spread, tumour size or treatment. MoneyHelper identifies non-invasive cancers as a common exclusion example, but exclusions differ by insurer and policy. Do not infer your scheme’s rule from another provider’s summary.
Less severe or partial payments
Look for a section covering less severe conditions. It may pay a smaller amount rather than the full benefit, and it may set a lifetime or annual limit on those payments. Establish whether a partial payment reduces the main benefit, uses up a condition category or affects a later claim.
Permanent disability provisions
Some schemes include a provision for permanent disability. Read whether it is tied to inability to perform your own occupation, any occupation or specified daily activities, and what medical evidence and waiting period apply. The wording may treat disability as a separate benefit with its own cap.

Exclusions and claim restrictions
Locate the exclusions beside each relevant condition, not just in a general list. The Association of British Insurers’ Guide to Minimum Standards for Critical Illness Cover 2023 says exclusions should be made clear for the conditions to which they apply, while allowing individual policy terms to differ: ABI guide (2023 PDF). Check exclusions involving prior symptoms, specific forms of cancer, self-inflicted injury, alcohol or drug use, and other restrictions only if they appear in your own wording; do not assume an exclusion applies without reading the clause.

Create a short condition worksheet with four columns: condition, exact qualifying definition, exclusion or threshold, and full or partial payment. This turns a long policy document into a usable reference without mistaking a marketing list for contractual cover.
4. Compare the lump sum with your household needs
Estimate what the payment would need to accomplish if a qualifying illness happened. MoneyHelper highlights debts, dependants, take-home pay, housing costs, work benefits and other insurance as core factors. Add costs that illness could create for your household.
| Need to assess | Questions to answer | Evidence to gather |
|---|---|---|
| Mortgage, rent and debts | What balances or housing payments would remain? | Mortgage statement, loan balances and tenancy costs. |
| Dependants | Who relies on your earnings or unpaid care? | Household budget and childcare or care commitments. |
| Essential spending | What bills continue if your income falls? | Recent bank statements and a realistic monthly budget. |
| Income replacement | How much take-home pay could disappear, and for how long? | Payslips, sick-pay policy and employer benefits statement. |
| Savings | How much cash is available without selling essential assets? | Accessible savings balances and emergency-fund records. |
| Other insurance | What could personal cover, life cover or another group benefit pay? | Current schedules and benefit amounts. |
| Illness-related costs | Could you need home adaptations, equipment, travel to treatment or extra care? | Likely household changes and professional estimates where available. |
Set out the one-off costs separately from ongoing costs. A lump sum may clear a debt or fund an adaptation, while ongoing bills may require income protection or continued earnings. Include any employer sick pay, but record its duration and eligibility rather than treating “sick pay” as an unlimited benefit.
Next, compare the policy’s full and partial payments with those needs. A condition list or a salary multiple is not proof of adequacy: the payment must be available for the events your wording covers and large enough for the purpose you have identified. Savings and other insurance can reduce the additional amount required, while high fixed costs or dependants can increase it. This is a planning comparison, not a promise that a claim will be accepted.
5. Check when the cover starts, changes and ends
Read the eligibility and termination sections for events that can remove or reduce cover. Ask HR or the insurer about leaving employment, retirement, a move to a different employee category, unpaid leave, working reduced hours and any age limit.
Legal & General’s group technical guide gives an insurer-specific example: its cover normally stops when an insured employee leaves employment or no longer meets eligibility conditions. That is not a universal rule, but it is why you should verify your scheme’s exact end date and any notice period: Legal & General group critical illness technical guide.

Ask whether continuation or conversion to an individual policy is available, what conditions apply and the deadline for applying. Do not assume portability merely because the benefit appears on your payslip. If you are changing jobs, obtain the ending date in writing and arrange any replacement only after you know its underwriting, exclusions, price and start date.
How to decide whether a shortfall exists
After completing the document and needs checks, classify the result:
- Likely aligned: the policy covers the conditions and severity levels you understand, you are eligible, and the full or partial payment has a credible purpose against your household costs.
- Definition gap: the headline list looks broad, but important conditions, stages or disability triggers do not meet the situations you are trying to protect.
- Amount gap: the covered events are suitable, yet the benefit would not cover the debts, housing costs, dependants’ needs or illness-related expenses you have identified.
- Continuity gap: the benefit ends on a job change or another eligibility event and no continuation option is confirmed.
- Coordination gap: you are relying on critical illness insurance to replace income, even though the policy pays only a qualifying one-off amount.
These categories help you ask a precise question. For example, ask HR to explain a definition gap, request a higher election if the scheme permits it for an amount gap, or investigate separate cover for a continuity gap. Keep the policy’s full wording beside your calculations so that each conclusion can be traced to a clause.
Comparing workplace cover with individual cover
If the workplace benefit appears insufficient, compare alternatives using the same measures rather than focusing only on the premium or the number of conditions. MoneyHelper notes that policy features and premiums vary and encourages careful reading of definitions and exclusions.
| Comparison point | Questions for both policies |
|---|---|
| Benefit amount | How is it calculated, and are there caps, indexation rules or separate partial-payment limits? |
| Definitions | Which conditions and stages qualify, and what medical evidence or severity test applies? |
| Exclusions | Which exclusions attach to each condition, and are prior symptoms or specified cancers treated differently? |
| Family payments | Are partner or child benefits included, and do they have separate limits or definitions? |
| Eligibility and underwriting | Is acceptance automatic, subject to health questions, or restricted by occupation, age or residency? |
| Premium | Is the price guaranteed, reviewable or linked to age, and who pays it? |
| Duration | How long does cover last, and can it continue after employment or a change of job? |
Do not cancel existing workplace or personal insurance before a replacement has been accepted and you have read its final terms. MoneyHelper warns that new cover may cost more as you age and that a replacement policy may not cover pre-existing conditions: MoneyHelper, “What is critical illness cover?”. A lower premium can reflect narrower definitions, more exclusions or a shorter term.

Use the needs inventory to decide which risk is causing the gap. A mortgage balance or adaptation may call for a lump sum; monthly bills during a long absence from work point to income-replacement planning. Check any employer sick-pay and disability benefits alongside both types of insurance so that you do not count the same protection twice.
Questions to put to HR or the insurer
Take the schedule and your worksheet to the benefits administrator or insurer. Ask for written answers to questions that the documents do not resolve:
- What is my insured amount today, and what salary figure or cap produced it?
- Which employee category and eligibility rule apply to me?
- When did my cover start, and are there actively-at-work or service conditions?
- Where are the definitions for each listed condition, including cancer stages and permanent disability?
- Which conditions pay a reduced amount, and do those payments reduce later benefits?
- Are partner or child benefits included, and what are their limits?
- What exclusions apply to the conditions I am checking?
- What happens to cover during unpaid leave, reduced hours, retirement or a transfer to another role?
- On what date would cover end if I leave, and is continuation or conversion available?
- Who should receive a claim notification, and what evidence and time limits apply?
Save the replies with the schedule. If an answer conflicts with a benefits portal, ask which document version controls and request the corrected record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen specialist advice is worthwhile
An independent adviser or specialist broker can help when the policy wording is difficult, your household has substantial debts or dependants, you are replacing cover, or a health history makes underwriting consequential. MoneyHelper says advisers may charge a fee or be paid commission, so ask how they are paid and what firms or products they can consider. An adviser cannot change the employer scheme’s definition, but can help you compare a shortfall with other forms of protection.
If a claim is imminent or a condition may fall near a definition threshold, contact the insurer’s claims team and use the wording that applies to your policy. Avoid relying on a summary page or an informal statement about what “usually” qualifies.
