How to Check Whether Your Salary and Service Qualify You for EPS Pension

For an ordinary Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) superannuation pension, check two primary conditions: at least 10 years of eligible EPS service and age 58. “Eligible service” is not necessarily the same as the number of years shown on an employment timeline. It is service for which EPS contributions were received or are receivable.

If you left covered employment before 58, you may qualify for an early pension after 10 years of eligible service once you reach at least age 50. The amount is reduced by 4% for every year your pension starts before 58. Your salary affects how the pension is calculated, but salary alone cannot substitute for the age-and-service test.

Start with the correct EPS benefit test

EPS eligibility depends first on the benefit you are seeking. The ordinary member-pension rules are different from early, disablement and survivor benefits. Use the following table as the starting point for an ordinary member claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Benefit route Age condition Service condition Reduction or qualification
Ordinary superannuation pension Age 58 At least 10 years of eligible EPS service The normal member-pension test
Early pension At least age 50 and below 58 when the pension starts At least 10 years of eligible EPS service Reduced by 4% for each year below age 58
Disablement pension Separate provisions apply The ordinary 10-year minimum does not apply under the EPFO manual Do not use the ordinary member checklist
Widow or children pension Separate provisions apply The ordinary 10-year minimum does not apply under the EPFO manual Do not use the ordinary member checklist

Leaving employment at 49, or at another age below 50, does not create an immediately payable early member pension under this rule. A member who has the required service must still meet the minimum age of 50 for early pension, and the pension is reduced because it begins before 58.

What “eligible service” means

EPFO’s seasonal-worker booklet defines eligible service as “a period of service for which the contribution under EPS’95 has been received or is receivable.” That definition is the key to checking your record. A joining date and a relieving date can show that you worked for an employer, but they do not by themselves prove that every month between those dates is counted for EPS.

EPFO’s pension manual describes service as a combination of past service and actual service, while taking account of periods that were not regularized, unemployment between spells and non-contributory service. Consequently, a simple subtraction of your first joining date from your final exit date can overstate the service that EPFO will recognize.

Contributory periods matter

Review whether an EPS contribution was actually posted, or was receivable under the applicable rules, for each employment period. A missing passbook entry can reflect a record problem, a transfer issue, a period without contributions or another account discrepancy. It should be investigated rather than silently counted as service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A year can count as a full eligibility year in the seasonal-worker example

EPFO’s seasonal-worker booklet states that, for eligibility, a year containing any contributory service is treated as a full year even when the contribution period is shorter than 12 months. Its example says that four months of contribution during a year count as one eligible year. This is an eligibility rule in that booklet; do not automatically use it to calculate pensionable salary or the final pension amount.

How to check your own record: a practical sequence

1. Identify the benefit and the age at commencement

Decide whether you are checking for ordinary superannuation pension at 58 or an early pension beginning between 50 and 57. For ordinary superannuation, write down your date of birth and the date on which you expect the pension to commence. For early pension, confirm that you will have stopped employment before 58, will be at least 50 when the pension begins and have at least 10 years of eligible service.

Do not treat “I have left my job” as equivalent to “I can draw an immediate pension.” The early-pension route has both a minimum age and a permanent reduction for starting before 58.

2. Open the UAN-linked EPFO passbook

Sign in to the EPFO Member Passbook portal with your Universal Account Number (UAN) credentials. Review the available passbook and claim-status information, and use EPFO’s employee-services resources if you need the relevant UAN or online-service entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The passbook is an important record to inspect, but the screen is not, by itself, a universal eligibility certificate. It may not resolve a disputed break, an omitted establishment, a transfer or whether a contribution is legally receivable.

3. Build a year-by-year service ledger

Make your own chronological record while the passbook is open. For every establishment, note:

  • the establishment or employer name shown in the account;
  • the start and end dates displayed;
  • the months in which EPS contributions appear;
  • any past-service period transferred into the account;
  • gaps, overlapping dates or periods with no contribution entry; and
  • the claim or transfer status associated with the account, if displayed.

Compare this ledger with appointment, wage and exit records that you retain. The purpose is not to replace EPFO’s determination; it is to identify exactly which period needs verification.

4. Count eligible service, not just calendar employment

Combine recognized past service and actual service, then examine every gap. Unregularized breaks, unemployment between spells and non-contributory periods may not count in the same way as contributory service. If an employment date appears in company records but no EPS contribution is shown, flag it instead of adding it automatically to the 10-year total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where the seasonal-worker rule applies to your case, a year with any contributory service may count as one full eligibility year. Keep that treatment separate from salary averaging: counting an eligibility year does not establish the salary used for the pension calculation.

5. Compare the resulting total with the 10-year threshold

For the ordinary member pension and the early member pension, the relevant threshold is 10 years of eligible service. If your verified total is below 10 years, you have not established eligibility for those two pension routes merely by showing a long employment history. If your total is at least 10 years, then apply the age rule for the route you selected.

6. Separate the eligibility check from the amount calculation

Only after you have established the service and age conditions should you examine the likely amount. For a new entrant, the formula printed in the scheme is:

Monthly pension = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not a universal personal estimate. Transitional provisions, applicable amendments, membership history and any higher-wage status can change the computation. The formula does not turn a salary figure into proof that you have 10 years of eligible service.

7. Ask EPFO for a records-based decision when anything is missing

Contact the relevant EPFO office if the passbook omits an establishment, shows an unexplained gap, does not reflect a transfer or contains a period whose contributions are disputed. Give the office your UAN, establishment details, dates and supporting records, and ask it to verify the eligible-service calculation under the provisions applicable to your membership.

A quick decision checklist

Before treating the result as settled, answer these questions in order:

  1. Am I checking ordinary superannuation, early, disablement or survivor pension?
  2. What is my age on the proposed pension commencement date?
  3. Does my year-by-year ledger show at least 10 years for which EPS contributions were received or are receivable?
  4. Have I included transferred past service but excluded unregularized breaks, unemployment intervals and non-contributory periods where applicable?
  5. Are missing months explained by a record issue, or have they actually been confirmed as contributory?
  6. Am I using salary only to estimate the amount after eligibility, rather than as a substitute for the service test?
  7. If the answer depends on a disputed period or higher-wage status, have I requested verification from the relevant EPFO office?

A “yes” to every applicable question gives you a well-supported self-check. It is still not a substitute for a records-based determination where the account history is incomplete.

How salary affects EPS—and what it cannot prove

Salary affects the pension amount

Pensionable salary is an input to the amount calculation, so salary history matters after the age-and-service test is satisfied. The scheme text includes transitional pensionable-salary limits of ₹6,500 per month for service up to 1 September 2014 and ₹15,000 per month thereafter in the quoted provision. Those figures are scheme calculation details for the relevant periods, not a statement that every member’s current salary is capped at one universal amount.

Current salary does not establish eligibility

A reported current salary cannot prove that EPS contributions were made on that salary, that every month of employment is eligible or that a higher-wage pension option was accepted. Check the contribution record and the applicable membership rules rather than using a payslip alone.

Salary averaging depends on dates and the case

EPFO’s 2023 higher-wage pension FAQ describes a 60-month average of monthly pay during contributory service before exit for relevant cases where pension commences on or after 1 September 2014. It describes a 12-month period for certain cases where pension commencement was before that date. These are date-specific provisions for qualifying cases, not a single averaging period that applies to every EPS member.

Confirm your commencement date, membership history and whether you fall within the relevant higher-wage provisions before using either period in an estimate. Higher-wage pension is procedurally distinct and is not an automatic entitlement for everyone whose salary exceeded a standard limit.

Understanding early pension reductions

The Ministry of Labour and Employment states that early pension is reduced by 4% for each year the member’s age falls short of 58. The reduction is tied to the age at which the pension commences.

  • At age 57, the reduction is 4%.
  • At age 55, the reduction is 12% because commencement is three years before 58.
  • At age 50, the reduction is 32% because commencement is eight years before 58.

These examples show the rule’s arithmetic; they do not calculate a member’s rupee pension. The underlying pensionable salary, eligible service and any other applicable scheme provisions must still be determined.

Do not confuse EPS service with your EPF balance

EPS service and the balance visible in an Employees’ Provident Fund account are different concepts. A large EPF balance does not, by itself, demonstrate 10 years of eligible EPS service. Conversely, a service record must be checked even if the balance display does not answer the pension question. Use the EPS contribution and employment history, not the balance alone, for the eligibility review.

When the passbook and your records disagree

Missing contribution months

List the establishment, wage period and missing months. Ask EPFO to verify whether the contribution was received, receivable or absent under the applicable record. Do not count the period conclusively until the discrepancy is addressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unregularized breaks or unemployment between jobs

Mark the exact dates and explain whether the break was regularized. EPFO’s manual treats these issues as relevant to the service calculation, so a continuous-looking employment history may not produce continuous eligible service.

Transferred or incomplete service

Collect the details of both the former and current establishments and request an account-level verification. A passbook that displays only part of the history should prompt a records review rather than a confident yes or no.

Higher-wage estimate

EPFO’s higher-wage dues calculator warns that its result is only a ballpark figure and that the concerned Regional Office’s calculation based on records is authoritative. That warning applies to the higher-wage dues calculator specifically; it should not be expanded into a claim that every EPFO calculator decides every eligibility question.

Worked checks

Member aged 58 with 10 verified service years

If the year-by-year review confirms at least 10 years for which EPS contributions were received or are receivable, the ordinary age-and-service test is met. Salary history is then relevant to the amount, not to replacing the service threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Member aged 54 with 12 verified service years

This member can examine the early-pension route because the service exceeds 10 years and the commencement age is above 50 but below 58. The pension would be reduced by 16% under the 4%-per-year rule because it starts four years before age 58.

Member with nine years on an employment timeline but disputed contributions

The timeline alone does not settle the result. Reconcile the missing period with EPFO. If eligible service reaches 10 years under the applicable records and rules, the member can then apply the relevant age test; if it does not, ordinary or early member-pension eligibility has not been established.

Member with four contributory months in a year

Under the seasonal-worker booklet’s eligibility example, that year is treated as one full eligibility year. The example does not automatically determine the pensionable salary average or the amount payable.

Member aged 49 with 10 verified years

Ten years of service alone does not make an immediate early member pension payable at age 49. The member must reach at least age 50 for the early route, or wait for the ordinary pension age of 58, with the applicable commencement rules then applied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Member aged 57 with 10 verified years

The early route may be considered at age 57, but the pension is reduced by 4% because commencement is one year before 58. Waiting until 58 changes the age route; it does not turn salary into a substitute for service.

Separate rules for disablement and survivor benefits

EPFO’s manual states that the 10-year minimum described for ordinary member pension does not apply to disablement pension or widow and children pension. Those are separate benefit pathways with their own conditions. Do not reject such a claim simply because the ordinary member has fewer than 10 years, and do not approve it by applying the ordinary checklist without checking the relevant provisions.

Common self-check mistakes

  • Counting every calendar month between joining and leaving as EPS service without checking contributions.
  • Assuming a passbook omission proves that no service exists, rather than asking EPFO whether the contribution was received or is receivable.
  • Adding unemployment or an unregularized break to the service total automatically.
  • Using the seasonal four-month example to calculate the pension amount or salary average.
  • Applying the 4% reduction to the age at which employment ended instead of the age at which pension commences.
  • Assuming a high current salary proves higher-wage pension coverage or acceptance of a higher-wage option.
  • Reading an EPF account balance as if it were an EPS-service statement.
  • Using the ordinary 10-year checklist to decide a disablement or survivor claim.

What a reliable self-check can and cannot tell you

A careful self-check can identify your age route, reconstruct the contribution history, highlight missing records and show whether the visible evidence reaches 10 years of eligible service. It cannot turn an incomplete passbook into a final legal determination. When dates, contributions, breaks, transfers or higher-wage status are disputed, the appropriate next step is a records-based verification by the relevant EPFO office.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many years of service are required for ordinary EPS pension?

The ordinary member-pension test is at least 10 years of eligible EPS service and age 58. Count service for which EPS contributions were received or are receivable, not merely the years shown on an employment timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I get EPS pension after 10 years of service?

Ten years is the service threshold for ordinary or early member pension, but age also matters. Ordinary pension is at 58. Early pension can begin from age 50, subject to the below-58 reduction and the other applicable rules.

Can I draw an immediate EPS pension if I leave work before age 50?

Not under the early member-pension rule described here. You must be at least 50 when the early pension starts; leaving employment earlier does not remove that minimum age.

Does salary decide EPS pension eligibility?

No. Salary affects pension computation, while ordinary and early member eligibility depends primarily on age and at least 10 years of eligible service. A payslip or current salary figure cannot prove that EPS contributions were made.

Is the UAN passbook a final yes-or-no eligibility certificate?

No. It is essential evidence to review, but it may not resolve omitted establishments, transfers, disputed breaks or whether a contribution is receivable. Ask the relevant EPFO office for a records-based verification when the history is incomplete.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What if I have only four months of EPS contributions in a year?

EPFO’s seasonal-worker booklet gives an eligibility example in which any contributory service during a year, including four months, counts as one full eligibility year. That treatment should not automatically be used for salary averaging or the pension amount.

How is early pension reduced?

The Ministry of Labour and Employment states that the reduction is 4% for each year the pension commences before age 58. For example, commencement at 55 means three years early and a 12% reduction; commencement at 50 means eight years early and a 32% reduction.

Does my EPF balance prove that I qualify for EPS pension?

No. EPF balance and EPS service are different concepts. Review the EPS contribution and employment history and have disputed periods verified instead of relying on the balance alone.

Which salary average should I use?

The applicable period depends on the case and dates. EPFO’s 2023 higher-wage FAQ describes a 60-month average for relevant cases commencing on or after 1 September 2014 and a 12-month period for certain cases commencing earlier. Confirm that the provision applies to you before estimating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 10-year minimum apply to disablement or survivor benefits?

EPFO’s manual states that the ordinary 10-year minimum does not apply to disablement pension or widow and children pension. Those claims follow separate provisions and should not be decided using the ordinary member checklist alone.

The Bottom Line

For ordinary EPS pension, verify both age 58 and at least 10 years of eligible service. For early pension, verify at least 10 years, commencement from age 50 and the 4% reduction for each year before 58. Use the UAN passbook as evidence, reconcile every gap, and obtain EPFO’s records-based confirmation when service, transfers, contributions or salary treatment are disputed.
