Check the goal before you check the fund. To see whether an existing mutual fund systematic investment plan (SIP) still fits, compare the goal’s current amount and deadline with your time remaining, financial capacity, willingness to accept losses, the scheme’s current Riskometer label and the allocation of all investments serving that goal. A SIP is only a facility for investing a fixed amount at regular intervals; it is not a promise that you will reach a particular corpus or earn a particular return.
The review should lead to a better question—whether the plan still matches your circumstances—not an automatic instruction to continue, stop or switch a scheme. Revisit it after a material change in family, work, income, expenses, priorities, goal date or risk tolerance.

What a SIP does—and what it cannot promise
SEBI’s investor-education booklet defines a SIP as investing a fixed amount regularly in a mutual fund scheme. The facility can make contributions consistent, but the investment remains exposed to the risks of the underlying scheme. Regular instalments do not guarantee a target value, a positive return or achievement of a financial goal.

A useful review therefore has two separate questions. First, is the goal itself still correctly defined? Second, does the chosen scheme and the rest of the portfolio still serve that goal at its current horizon and risk level? A satisfactory answer to one question does not settle the other.
A seven-step check for whether the SIP still fits
1. Write down the goal as it exists today
Record four items before examining recent fund returns:
- What the money is for, such as a home down payment, education or retirement.
- The amount you expect to need, in the currency and terms that make sense for the goal.
- The date or period when the money will be needed.
- Which investments, including this SIP and other accounts, are intended for it.
SEBI describes a useful goal as specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. A goal can change even when the SIP instruction has not. A marriage, child, job change, relocation, new debt, altered education plan or revised retirement age may change the amount or date. Higher expenses can reduce the amount you can invest; a larger target can require a different savings plan. Write the revised goal rather than allowing an old label to drive a new decision.

Separate the goal from the contribution. “Invest ₹10,000 a month” describes an action, not an outcome. “Have the amount needed for a defined fee by a specified date” describes the objective that the SIP is supposed to support. If you have several objectives, give each one its own target, deadline and list of counted assets instead of assuming one undifferentiated corpus will cover everything.
2. Recalculate the time horizon
Use the time remaining until the money is actually needed, not the date on which the SIP began. Investor.gov defines the time horizon as the period an investor plans to invest to achieve a financial goal. A shorter horizon generally leaves less time to recover from a market fall, while a longer horizon can provide more time for a diversified allocation to experience market cycles.
There is no universal number of years that makes one fund safe or unsafe. Ask whether the current horizon has shortened, lengthened or become uncertain. If a payment is now needed sooner, an allocation that was tolerable for a distant goal may expose near-term money to too much volatility. SEBI cautions against using volatile or illiquid investments for money required soon.
Put the target date in writing and note any deadlines that cannot move, such as a school fee or contractual payment. A flexible retirement date and a fixed fee date are different planning problems even if the monthly SIP amount is identical. If the date is a range, record the earliest plausible date as well as the preferred one; the earlier date is the more demanding test of liquidity and volatility.

Also distinguish time until the first withdrawal from the period over which money will be spent. A retirement goal may begin on one date but continue for many years, while a house deposit may be needed in one transaction. The review should identify which portion must be available first, rather than treating the entire future goal as having one identical horizon.
3. Separate willingness to take risk from ability to take risk
Risk tolerance has two parts. Willingness is how comfortable you are seeing the account fall without abandoning the plan. Capacity is whether you could absorb a loss without endangering rent, emergency savings, debt payments or another near-term obligation.

Both can change. A person may remain psychologically comfortable with equity volatility but lose the financial capacity to bear it after a job loss. Conversely, a debt-free investor with a larger emergency reserve may have more capacity than when the SIP started. Investor.gov notes that suitable allocation depends on both time frame and risk tolerance, and that allocation may need to change as circumstances change. The sources do not support a one-size-fits-all equity-to-debt percentage.
Ask yourself:
- How large a temporary loss could the goal withstand without changing its date?
- Would a fall make you stop contributions or redeem in panic?
- Are emergency cash and essential obligations funded separately?
- Has income become less stable or has a new liability appeared?
- Could you continue the contribution if expenses rose for several months?
Your answers are evidence for a review, not a formula that produces a universally correct fund. Willingness is not proved by a questionnaire completed during a rising market; consider how you actually reacted during a fall and whether that reaction would be compatible with the goal’s deadline.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →4. Read the scheme’s current Riskometer and documents
SEBI requires mutual fund asset-management companies to display a Riskometer, a visual indication of a scheme’s risk level. The label is reviewed periodically, so read the current label rather than relying on an old screenshot, a distributor description or the risk level you remember when you invested.
Check the latest scheme information and factsheet for the scheme’s stated objective, asset mix, permitted instruments and other characteristics. Compare those features with the goal’s horizon and your risk capacity. A label is a useful starting signal, not a guarantee of how the account will behave over a particular month or year.
Note the date on which you read the Riskometer and factsheet. Scheme characteristics can be updated, and the document you saw when you started the SIP may no longer describe the current mandate. Read the objective and principal investment approach, not just the scheme name or a category label. A name that sounds conservative or aggressive is not a substitute for the current official description.
Do not infer that a recent fall automatically means the scheme has become unsuitable. First establish whether the scheme’s role, current risk level and investment mandate still match the plan you intended. Conversely, a familiar name and a comfortable past experience do not prove that the present risk level remains appropriate.
5. Review the entire portfolio earmarked for the goal
The SIP instalment is not the same as the goal’s allocation. Include other mutual funds, shares, deposits, provident-fund balances, bonds, cash and any employer or pension assets that you are counting toward the same objective. Two funds that appear different may expose the portfolio to similar companies or asset classes; a single fund may also represent an unexpectedly large share of the goal money.
SEBI recommends reviewing and rebalancing to keep a portfolio aligned with its objectives. Rebalancing means bringing the mix back toward the intended allocation, rather than allowing a rising or falling asset class to determine the mix by accident. Diversification can reduce the damage from poor performance in one holding, but it cannot remove market-wide volatility.
List each holding’s purpose, approximate value and broad asset exposure. Then look at the combined result. A SIP in one fund may be reasonable in isolation but create concentration when added to shares, another fund or an employment-linked asset with similar exposure. The question is not how many folios you have; it is whether the assets serving the goal provide the intended mix.

| Time | Horizon assumed at commencement | Years or months remaining today | Has the shorter or longer horizon changed the acceptable volatility? |

| Scheme | Risk and mandate understood at purchase | Current Riskometer and documents | Does the scheme still perform the role you assigned it? |
| Portfolio | Intended mix across all goal investments | Actual mix and concentration today | Is rebalancing needed to restore the intended allocation? |
6. Put performance in context
Past performance is evidence of what happened, not a forecast. SEBI’s investor-education page states: “Past performance can provide insights, but it does not guarantee returns.” Do not decide from a single recent return, a brief ranking change or one market fall without first checking the goal, horizon, risk and portfolio role.
AMFI’s investor page advises patience with an actively managed equity scheme and says investors should allow a reasonable period of 18–24 months for the fund to generate returns in the portfolio. This is AMFI guidance, not a regulator-mandated holding period, a return forecast or a universal test of suitability. It should not be applied mechanically to every type of scheme or every investor.
For this review, the important performance questions are qualitative:
- Was the period you are judging long enough to assess the scheme’s stated role?
- Did the fund experience the same market conditions as the comparison you are making?
- Does the current portfolio still provide the diversification and exposure the goal requires?
- Are you reacting to a goal or circumstance change, or merely to discomfort caused by a short-term price move?
- Would a different result alter the goal date, or is the concern only about an account statement’s recent number?
The available guidance does not establish a specific benchmark, ranking method or current scheme comparison for deciding whether an unknown investor should switch. Avoid treating a chart, social-media ranking or one-month return as a complete suitability analysis.
7. Decide what needs investigating next
A review can produce several legitimate outcomes. If the goal, deadline, circumstances, scheme risk and portfolio role remain consistent, document the baseline and set a date to review it again. If one of those elements changed, investigate the relevant adjustment rather than treating the SIP instruction as untouchable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| What changed? | Reasonable next question |
|---|---|
| Goal amount or date | Does the savings rate and allocation still correspond to the revised target and horizon? |
| Income, expenses, liabilities or emergency reserves | Can the current contribution and risk exposure be maintained without compromising essential needs? |
| Willingness or capacity for loss | Does the portfolio need a different risk level or a staged adjustment? |
| Scheme Riskometer or mandate | Does the current scheme still fit the role assigned to it? |
| Portfolio concentration or drift | Would rebalancing restore the intended mix across the investments serving the goal? |
SEBI recommends review and rebalancing to keep a portfolio aligned with objectives. Investor.gov likewise says allocation may need to change when the goal, risk tolerance or financial situation changes. Neither source dictates a universal redemption, switch or continuation decision for an investor whose facts are unknown.
Write down the next question before taking action. It might be whether the target needs to be recalculated, whether the current allocation has drifted, whether the scheme mandate changed, or whether a qualified adviser should review several competing goals together. A question-led process reduces the chance that an emotional reaction becomes an irreversible transaction.
When a market fall is not, by itself, a suitability test
A market decline can make an otherwise suitable long-term allocation look alarming. The correct response is to return to the written goal, horizon and risk assessment. If those remain intact and the scheme’s role and current risk label remain appropriate, a short period of poor performance does not by itself establish that the SIP no longer fits. Conversely, patience is not a reason to ignore a changed deadline, an inability to absorb losses or a material change in the scheme’s characteristics.
Do not increase, stop or switch contributions solely to chase the latest winning category. Such a move can alter the portfolio’s risk and may leave the goal dependent on an outcome you did not plan for. A market fall is a prompt to check assumptions, not an automatic buy, sell or pause signal.

How to document the review
Keep a dated one-page record so that the next review compares decisions, not memories. Include:
- Goal purpose, current target amount and required date.
- Current SIP amount and the other assets counted toward the goal.
- Time remaining and any date that cannot be extended.
- Income stability, major liabilities, emergency-reserve status and ability to tolerate a loss.
- Current scheme name, objective, Riskometer level and the date you read the factsheet.
- Approximate allocation across asset classes and any concentration you noticed.
- The specific question requiring follow-up, such as recalculating contributions, checking a changed mandate or considering rebalancing.
- The date for the next review and the event that would trigger an earlier one.
This record prevents an account statement, a social-media opinion or a recent return from becoming the entire decision process. Keep copies of the official scheme documents you used, so that a later comparison is between like-for-like information rather than recollection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Life events that should trigger an earlier review
SEBI advises reviewing a portfolio at major milestones such as marriage, having children and retirement. Other practical triggers include a job or business-income change, a large new loan, a relocation, a major medical expense, a change in education plans, an inheritance, a decision to retire earlier or later, or a deadline moving closer. The trigger does not prescribe a transaction; it signals that the old assumptions should be tested again.
Consider a review when a partner’s income changes, when a dependent’s needs increase, or when two goals begin competing for the same monthly surplus. A goal may also become less important or be postponed. In each case, update the written purpose, target and date first; only then assess whether the SIP and the broader allocation still have a suitable role.

A general checklist cannot calculate a suitable contribution, assess every holding or resolve competing goals. SEBI’s investor-education material describes Investment Advisers as providing financial planning, goal-based planning, portfolio construction, asset allocation, risk profiling and monitoring.
If you seek help, verify the provider’s current SEBI registration, the scope of advice, fees, conflicts and the services actually included before engaging. Ask what information the adviser will review, how often monitoring occurs and whether the advice covers all investments serving the goal rather than one SIP alone. An adviser can help translate a changed goal or risk profile into a plan, but registration does not turn a return projection into a guarantee.
Important limits of this check
This framework does not calculate an individual’s required SIP amount and does not establish a target return or probability of reaching a goal. It also does not cover tax treatment, current scheme performance, expense ratios, exit loads or redemption rules. Those details can vary by scheme and date; verify them in the current official documents before acting. Investor.gov is a US investor-education source used here for general principles about horizon, allocation and risk tolerance, while SEBI and AMFI provide the India-context guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Should I continue my mutual fund SIP during a market fall?
A fall alone does not establish that the SIP is unsuitable. Recheck the goal, deadline, capacity for loss, current Riskometer, scheme role and whole-portfolio allocation. The appropriate next step depends on those facts, not on a universal instruction to continue or stop.
How do I know if my SIP is on track?
Define the current target amount and date, list every asset counted toward the goal and compare that position with the plan’s assumptions. A goal label, a steady auto-debit or a recent positive return is not proof of progress, and the sources do not provide a universal return or probability target.

Is a higher Riskometer level automatically wrong for a short goal?
The Riskometer is a current visual guide to scheme risk, not a complete personal recommendation. A shorter horizon generally allows less time to recover from a fall, and SEBI cautions against volatile or illiquid investments for money needed soon. Compare the label and mandate with the actual deadline and your ability to absorb losses.
Does diversification guarantee that the goal will be met?
No. Diversification can reduce the effect of poor performance in one holding, but it cannot remove market-wide volatility or guarantee a target value. Review the combined allocation across all investments serving the goal.
Is 18–24 months a compulsory period before judging a fund?
No. AMFI’s investor page gives 18–24 months as a reasonable period for an actively managed equity scheme to generate returns in the portfolio. It is guidance, not a regulator-mandated holding period, forecast or universal suitability test, and it does not override a changed goal or financial emergency.
Should I switch if another scheme recently performed better?
Do not switch solely to chase a recent winner. First examine whether the goal, horizon, risk tolerance, current Riskometer, mandate and portfolio allocation still fit. The available guidance does not establish a universal ranking or benchmark that dictates a switch for every investor.
What if my income has fallen and I can no longer tolerate the same risk?
Separate willingness from capacity. A job or income change can reduce the ability to absorb losses even if your attitude toward volatility is unchanged. Reassess essential obligations, reserves, contribution affordability and allocation, and seek individualized advice if the decision involves several goals.
How often should I review my SIP?
No universal interval is specified. Review after a material life or goal change and whenever the scheme’s current documents or your circumstances require a fresh check. Keep a dated record and choose a practical next-review date so that monitoring is deliberate rather than driven by daily market movement.
