Your SIP fits your budget only when its recurring debit can be paid from dependable monthly cash flow after essentials, debt, irregular bills, emergency savings and other priorities. Start with predictable take-home income, calculate the surplus that remains in both normal and tight months, and choose an installment below that dependable surplus. A ₹500 minimum installment—or ₹250 under Chhoti SIP—is only a scheme entry point, not proof that you can afford it.
This check answers affordability, not whether a particular mutual-fund scheme suits your goal. After the cash-flow test, match the scheme’s objective, risk and time horizon to what you are saving for.

Use a cash-flow ceiling, not a salary percentage
There is no evidence-based universal rule that says an affordable SIP must equal a fixed percentage of salary. Your ceiling depends on income reliability, household obligations, debt, upcoming bills, emergency reserves and existing goals. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) advises investors to create a budget, track spending, prioritize basic needs, build an emergency fund and make informed decisions. Its investor guidance says: “One should manage income and expenses by creating a budget, tracking spending, and making informed financial decisions.” See SEBI’s Management of Income and Expenses guidance.

Dependable SIP ceiling = dependable take-home income − essential expenses − debt payments − monthly provisions for irregular bills − emergency allocation − other committed goal savings
The result is a ceiling, not a target. Select a recurring amount below it so a higher-cost month does not force you to skip rent, insurance, loan payments or necessary care. A budget surplus that appears only when every month goes perfectly is not dependable enough for a standing instruction.
Build your monthly check step by step
1. Start with income you can reasonably count on
Use monthly take-home pay and other income that is predictable. SEBI’s budgeting framework recognizes income sources such as salary, bonuses and rental income, but a bonus or occasional payment should not be treated as guaranteed monthly cash. If income varies, use a conservative figure based on the amount you can reliably access in a lean month rather than the best month.

Keep one-time receipts, annual incentives and uncertain freelance work outside the recurring-income base unless you have a separate plan for investing them when they actually arrive. A SIP is a repeated commitment; funding it with income that may not recur creates avoidable debit risk.
2. Record actual outflows, not just planned spending
List the expenses that leave your household account. Include:
- Housing costs, food and household supplies.
- Electricity, water, phone, internet and other utilities.
- Transport, fuel and recurring education or work costs.
- Insurance premiums and medical spending.
- Loan and credit-card payments, including minimums and scheduled instalments.
- Dependent care, school fees and support for family members.
- Other regular subscriptions or commitments.
Use bank and card records where available. A budget based on memory usually misses small, frequent purchases and periodic bills. Tracking several recent months gives a better baseline than a single unusually cheap or expensive month.

3. Convert irregular bills into monthly provisions
Annual, quarterly and seasonal costs still consume money. Divide an expected annual bill by 12, a quarterly bill by three, or use another consistent monthly provision. Examples include annual insurance renewals, school costs, maintenance, festivals, travel that you have already committed to, tax payments and predictable medical expenses.
Set that provision aside before calling the remainder available for an SIP. Otherwise, the SIP may appear affordable for eleven months and then compete with a large bill in the twelfth.
4. Protect essentials and emergency savings first
SEBI recommends prioritizing basic needs and allocating money to an emergency fund. Do not count emergency money or cash reserved for near-term bills as a safe recurring surplus. An equity-market investment cannot substitute for money needed immediately after a job loss, medical event or urgent repair.
If you are still building an emergency reserve, include the amount you intend to set aside each month in the calculation. The SIP amount should be what remains after that allocation, not money diverted from it.
5. Calculate the dependable surplus
Subtract the categories above from dependable income. Use a separate line for existing investments and other goals you have already committed to. The remainder is the maximum amount your regular cash flow appears able to support; it is not an instruction to invest all of it.
For example, in an illustrative household budget, a dependable ₹60,000 take-home income might be reduced by ₹32,000 of essential and debt costs, ₹5,000 provisioned for irregular bills, ₹6,000 for emergency savings and ₹4,000 for another goal. The calculated surplus is ₹13,000. A SIP of ₹13,000 would leave no margin for an unexpectedly expensive month, so a lower recurring installment would be more resilient. These figures are only a calculation example; they are not a recommended amount.

6. Test an ordinary month and a tight month
Ask whether the installment remains payable when food, transport, utilities or medical costs rise, or when variable income falls. A practical stress test is to remove uncertain income and add a reasonable buffer to variable expenses, then recalculate. If the debit would require using a credit card, overdraft, emergency reserve or money earmarked for a bill, it is above your dependable limit.
7. Set the debit date after income arrives
AMFI describes an SIP as a fixed amount invested at regular intervals, commonly monthly, and says it can be debited through a standing instruction. Choose a date that follows your dependable income receipt and leaves enough time for essential payments. Check that the bank account will contain the installment after rent, loan debits and other automatic payments have cleared.
Use a worksheet that exposes the real surplus
The following layout keeps the affordability decision tied to cash flow rather than a percentage rule.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Budget line | What to record | How it affects the SIP decision |
|---|---|---|
| Dependable income | Predictable take-home pay and other reliable receipts | Forms the starting ceiling; exclude uncertain bonuses from the recurring base |
| Essential spending | Housing, food, utilities, transport, insurance and dependent care | Must be paid before investing |
| Debt payments | Loan instalments, credit-card payments and other scheduled obligations | Reduce the amount available for a new commitment |
| Irregular-cost provision | Monthly share of annual, quarterly or seasonal bills | Prevents future bills from being mistaken for SIP capacity |
| Emergency allocation | Amount reserved for unexpected expenses | Keep it outside the recurring investment surplus |
| Other goal savings | Existing contributions for near-term or long-term goals | Subtract before setting the SIP |
| Dependable surplus | Income less all preceding lines | Sets the upper boundary; choose a lower amount if the margin is thin |
Recalculate using actual spending records and retain a margin for months that are more expensive than average. A surplus that disappears under ordinary variation is not a stable SIP budget.
Minimum SIP amounts are not affordability rules
AMFI’s current SIP information page states that an installment can be as low as ₹500 per month, or ₹250 per month under Chhoti SIP. Those are minimum examples on the information page, not a recommendation for what your household should invest. Scheme-specific conditions can apply, so check the current official scheme documents before starting. The figures are reported on AMFI’s dynamic page, which should be rechecked when you act: AMFI mutual fund and SIP information.
AMFI also reports ₹32,490 crore in SIP collections for September 2026. That is an industry aggregate, not an affordability benchmark or a target for an individual investor. A low minimum does not make an installment safe for a household whose cash flow is already committed.

Separate affordability from scheme suitability
Passing the cash-flow test only tells you that you may be able to make the payment. It does not establish that the scheme is suitable. SEBI says the scheme objective should align with investor needs; see SEBI’s Understanding Mutual Funds guidance.

Identify what the money is for and when you expect to need it. AMFI explains that mutual funds include different scheme types and investment horizons, and notes that equity schemes are generally more suitable for longer horizons while debt schemes can suit shorter horizons. Read the scheme’s stated objective, risk information and suggested horizon before deciding whether it belongs in your plan. A monthly amount that fits your budget can still be inappropriate for a goal due soon if the investment can fluctuate when you need to withdraw.
Do not use NAV, ratings or past returns as an affordability shortcut
AMFI’s myths-and-facts guidance explains that a lower NAV does not by itself mean a fund is cheaper or will deliver better returns, ratings can change, and past performance does not guarantee future returns. Those factors cannot tell you whether your bank account can support a recurring debit. Review current official scheme information and consider risk and time horizon separately from the budget calculation: AMFI’s Mutual Fund Myths & Facts.
Remember that an SIP is a payment method, not a return guarantee
Regular installments can support disciplined investing and may produce rupee-cost averaging over time, but the mechanism does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. Market value can fall, and you must be able to continue only when the contribution remains consistent with your cash flow and goal.

| Direct plan | Directly from the asset management company | No intermediary commission, so the expense ratio is lower; the investor handles research and transactions | Investors willing to select, monitor and transact without intermediary help |
These distinctions come from SEBI’s Regular and Direct Mutual Funds guidance. Current scheme-level expense ratios and service arrangements should be checked in the official documents. Do not choose a plan type merely because its lower or higher cost appears to make a marginal SIP affordable; first make sure the contribution itself is sustainable.

What to do when the proposed SIP fails the test
The surplus is zero or negative
Do not start a recurring debit. Rework discretionary spending, irregular-cost provisions, debt repayment and emergency savings, but do not remove essentials or borrow to fund the SIP. If no dependable surplus remains, the correct result of the check is that the proposed installment does not fit now.
The SIP works only with a bonus or overtime
Keep the recurring amount within dependable income. When a bonus actually arrives, you can make a separate, deliberate investment decision rather than promising it in advance through a monthly standing instruction.
The debit date causes failed payments
Move the instruction to a date after income receipt and essential debits, and verify the bank mandate and account balance. A failed debit is a cash-flow warning, not a reason to use expensive credit. Review any bank, platform or scheme consequences under the current terms.
A tight month forces you to use emergency money
Pause and reassess the amount and your reserve. Money needed for an emergency should not be treated as available for a recurring market investment. Rebuild the reserve and restart only when the revised cash-flow test passes.
Your income, housing or family obligations change
Recalculate after a job change, pay reduction, rent or mortgage change, new dependent, major debt, insurance change or sustained increase in living costs. A SIP is not a reason to miss an essential payment or take on new borrowing.
A repeatable review checklist
Before authorizing or increasing a SIP, confirm each point:
- I used dependable take-home income rather than assuming an uncertain bonus.
- I listed actual essential spending, debt payments and dependent obligations.
- I converted annual and irregular bills into monthly provisions.
- I kept emergency savings and near-term bill money outside the SIP surplus.
- The proposed debit still works in a lean or unusually expensive month.
- The debit date follows income receipt and does not collide with essential automatic payments.
- I checked the scheme objective, risk information and time horizon against my goal.
- I understand whether a regular or direct plan’s service and cost structure suits how I will manage it.
- I am not relying on a low minimum, low NAV, current rating or past return to justify the amount.
Revisit the worksheet whenever income, housing, debt, family responsibilities or recurring expenses materially change. Treat the SIP as one line in a living household budget, not as a fixed amount that must continue regardless of circumstances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the decision in perspective
Budgeting determines whether a recurring installment is payable without sacrificing essentials or resilience. It does not predict market returns and cannot replace scheme due diligence. For scheme-specific minimums, expenses, mandates and risk disclosures, use the current official documents and investor information from the relevant asset management company and regulators. This is general investor education, not personalized financial advice.
