To check whether a mobile recharge plan changed, compare the live plan listing for your operator and service area with the same tariff in the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) consumer tariff portal. Match the exact voucher or plan, price, validity, data allowance and limits, voice and SMS inclusions, and every bundled benefit. An old screenshot or third-party recharge page is evidence of what was displayed then—not proof that your operator changed the plan.

This guide applies to Indian mobile connections. Prices and benefits can vary by operator, prepaid or postpaid status, service area (circle), and the date you check. TRAI’s plans-and-tariff FAQ was updated on 9 October 2026, its consumer portal on 13 October 2026, and its tariff-filing explanation on 12 October 2026; use those sources together with the operator’s current app or website.

What counts as a real change to a recharge plan?

A plan has changed when the operator’s current, applicable listing differs from the previously published terms for the same plan or voucher. The difference may be a higher price, shorter validity, lower data allowance, a newly imposed daily data limit, fewer voice or SMS benefits, or the removal or alteration of a bundled service.

Do not compare only the headline price. A plan that costs the same but lasts fewer days is more expensive per day; a plan with the same validity but less data has a different value; and a “data” amount may be subject to a daily cap or a fair-use condition. Treat the plan name, voucher code or denomination, service area, and connection type as part of the identity of the offer.

  • Price: the amount charged for the exact voucher or plan, including any stated recurring or one-time component.
  • Validity: the number of days, billing period, or other duration shown for that plan.
  • Data: total allowance, daily allowance, speed restrictions, rollover language, and any stated high-speed limit.
  • Voice and SMS: minutes, unlimited wording, network restrictions, national or local limits, and SMS quota.
  • Other benefits: subscriptions, roaming, entertainment, cloud storage, caller tunes, or other inclusions that the operator expressly lists.

A discrepancy in an archived listing becomes persuasive only after you confirm that it refers to the same operator, circle, plan, and connection type. If the old material is for a different service area or a similarly named voucher, it may describe a different tariff rather than a revision.

How do I check if my mobile recharge plan has changed?

Use the operator’s current information first, then use TRAI’s portal as an independent tariff record. TRAI says providers must publish available plans through customer-care centres, points of sale, retail outlets, their websites, and their apps.

  1. Identify the connection. Write down the operator, whether the line is prepaid or postpaid, the mobile number’s service area or circle, and the exact plan or voucher name. If you are checking another person’s recharge, obtain these details from that subscriber rather than assuming your own circle applies.
  2. Open the operator’s official app or website. Sign in to the relevant number where required and open the current prepaid, postpaid, recharge, or plan-details page. Select the applicable circle and connection type. Save the plan name, denomination, validity, data wording, voice and SMS allowances, and other benefits as displayed on the date you check.
  3. Open TRAI’s consumer tariff portal. Choose the service area, provider category, provider, and connection type. The portal currently lists Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vodafone Idea. Filter or search for the same tariff type, then note the displayed price and validity.
  4. Match the plan identity. Compare the exact voucher or plan name and denomination, not merely a similar amount. Confirm that both records refer to the same prepaid or postpaid category and service area. If the operator uses a marketing name while TRAI uses a tariff description, use the price, validity, and benefit wording to establish that they are the same offer.
  5. Compare every benefit field. Check price, validity, total and daily data, speed or usage limits, voice, SMS, and each listed extra benefit. Record “not stated” where one source does not publish a field instead of assuming that the benefit is included.
  6. Resolve conflicts using current records. When an old screenshot, saved web page, or third-party recharge page disagrees with the current operator listing, treat the operator’s live page and TRAI’s filed tariff information as the records to reconcile. Keep dated screenshots or notes if you need to ask customer care to explain the difference.

Which details should you compare side by side?

A side-by-side worksheet prevents a price-only comparison. Use one row for the old record and one for the current record, and identify the source and date for every value.

Comparison field What to record Where to verify
Operator and service area Provider, circle or service area, and connection type Operator account or plan page; TRAI portal filters
Plan or voucher identity Exact name, denomination, tariff type, and any code shown Operator listing and matching TRAI tariff entry
Price Displayed recharge or tariff amount and whether it is one-time or recurring Operator listing; TRAI portal price field
Validity Days, billing period, or other stated duration Operator listing; TRAI portal validity field
Data allowance Total data, daily quota, speed cap, rollover, and fair-use wording Full operator benefit description; TRAI entry where provided
Voice Minutes or unlimited wording, network restrictions, and calling conditions Operator benefit description
SMS Quota, national or local scope, and excess-use terms if stated Operator benefit description
Other benefits Every subscription, roaming inclusion, or service bundled with the plan Operator benefit description
Evidence date Date and time you viewed or saved each record Your screenshot, note, or downloaded statement

TRAI’s portal exposes comparison fields such as price and validity, but the operator’s own listing is the place to read the complete benefit wording. If a benefit appears only in a promotional banner and not in the detailed terms, capture both and ask the operator which terms govern the recharge.

How to use TRAI’s consumer tariff portal

Select the correct filters

Start with the service area, then select the provider category, provider, and connection type. A national search can mix tariffs that are not available in your circle. The portal’s filters are therefore part of the comparison, not optional navigation.

Search by tariff identity, not just amount

Several plans can share a denomination while offering different validity or data. Locate the tariff type and validity that match the operator’s listing. If multiple entries remain, compare the benefit description and any plan or voucher identifier before deciding that one has changed.

Read the portal’s status and date information

The online tariff filing and retrieval system is intended to make providers’ filed tariffs available for consumer comparison. Providers are expected to report tariff revisions and withdrawals. A portal entry is useful evidence of the filed tariff, while the operator’s current page confirms what the customer is being offered in the app or checkout flow.

Save a dated record

Record the portal filters, tariff name, price, validity, and the date checked. Tariffs are volatile; a later search may show a revised or withdrawn entry. Your dated record lets customer care distinguish a genuine revision from a mismatch between two plans.

Did my recharge plan price increase, or did another term change?

Calculate the change across all comparable terms before concluding that the price increased. A denomination can remain unchanged while validity or data falls, and a higher denomination can include a longer validity or additional benefits.

  • Price increased, other terms unchanged: the same plan identity and benefits appear in both records, but the current amount is higher.
  • Price unchanged, value reduced: the amount is the same, but validity, data, voice, SMS, or an included service is lower or absent.
  • Plan replaced: the old plan is no longer listed and a new plan has a different identity, even if the denomination is similar.
  • Display mismatch: the operator app, website, and portal describe different plans because of circle, connection type, channel, or timing.
  • Usage or billing issue: the advertised terms match, but your balance fell unexpectedly or a charge appeared during use. That requires an itemized usage investigation rather than a tariff comparison.

Keep the comparison limited to the same service area and enrollment circumstances. A friend’s result in another circle is not evidence that your plan changed.

What notice and protection does TRAI describe for existing plans?

TRAI’s Plans & Tariff FAQ states: “The service provider cannot change the terms and conditions of the existing tariff plan without giving a notice of 30 days to its customers.” The 30-day notice statement concerns an existing tariff plan; it does not mean every new offer, future enrolment, or individual dispute has identical circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same FAQ states that a plan must remain available to an enrolled subscriber for at least six months and that no tariff component can be hiked for that subscriber during those six months. It also says a provider may reduce the tariff. These are statements in TRAI’s FAQ, so apply them to the facts of the enrollment and plan you can document rather than assuming they settle every complaint automatically.

TRAI also says it does not fix mobile tariffs. Providers have flexibility to offer plans with different charges, validity periods, and usage benefits as long as they follow the applicable regulatory principles. TRAI’s role in the portal is to provide tariff information for comparison, not to select the cheapest or best plan for you.

What if the operator app and an old listing disagree?

Check whether the records describe the same offer

Compare the circle, prepaid or postpaid category, plan name, denomination, validity, and benefit wording. A third-party page may retain a discontinued plan, show a different circle, or combine several vouchers under one headline. Those possibilities must be eliminated before calling the difference a price or benefit change.

Use the current operator record for what you can buy now

The live operator app or website shows the plan currently presented to your number or selected circle. TRAI’s portal supplies a second record of filed tariffs. If both current sources agree, an old screenshot is normally historical information rather than evidence of a current display error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask customer care for a written explanation

Provide the number or account identifier through the operator’s authenticated channel, the exact plan name, the date of recharge, and the fields that differ. Attach dated screenshots without exposing one-time passwords or unrelated personal information. Ask whether the difference is a circle-specific tariff, a plan withdrawal, a benefit expiry, or an account-level issue.

Escalate a documented discrepancy

Keep the customer-care reference number and the response. If the explanation does not address the documented tariff terms, use the operator’s formal complaint or appellate route and include the same evidence. The TRAI portal’s filing information and the operator’s published terms give you a clearer record than an undated social-media post.

How do I investigate an unexpected debit or usage charge?

An unexpected deduction is different from a changed advertised plan. First compare the plan terms as described above. If those terms match but your balance or bill does not, request itemized usage details from the operator.

TRAI’s prepaid FAQ says a prepaid subscriber may request usage details for the six months preceding the month in which the request is made. The provider may charge a reasonable amount, capped at ₹50, for supplying those details. Ask for the records through customer care and specify the period, service, and number for which you need the itemization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the date and time of the recharge and the date the deduction appeared.
  • Separate voice, SMS, data, roaming, subscription, and service charges in the itemized record.
  • Compare each event with the plan’s stated limits and with any add-on or pack purchased separately.
  • Request correction or reversal when the itemized event does not match the published terms, and retain the complaint reference.

How should I document a plan comparison?

Make a short evidence file whenever the difference matters financially or you expect to complain. Use a consistent naming method such as “operator-circle-plan-date” for screenshots or notes.

  1. Write the operator, circle, connection type, plan name or voucher code, and the date checked.
  2. Capture the operator’s detailed plan page, not only the recharge button or advertising headline.
  3. Capture the TRAI portal filters and matching tariff entry, including price and validity.
  4. Record data, voice, SMS, and bundled benefits in a table, marking any field that is not stated.
  5. Save the recharge receipt, transaction identifier, and account statement if money has already been charged.
  6. Redact passwords, full payment details, and unrelated personal information before sharing evidence with support.

This record separates a plan revision from a display error, a circle mismatch, or a usage dispute and gives customer care the exact facts needed to investigate.

Common mistakes that produce a false “plan changed” conclusion

Comparing different circles

Indian mobile tariffs can vary by service area. Always select the circle associated with the connection, not the place where you happen to be browsing.

Comparing prepaid with postpaid

Prepaid vouchers and postpaid plans use different tariff structures. Confirm the connection type before comparing price or validity.

Using only a price filter

Two plans at the same amount can have different validity, data, or bundled services. Match the exact plan identity and every benefit field.

Relying on an old third-party page

Archived or cached pages can be useful historical evidence but do not establish the operator’s current terms. Verify against the operator and TRAI records.

Ignoring daily limits

A stated data total may be delivered as a daily allowance or subject to speed reduction. Copy the full wording instead of converting it into a simple total.

Confusing a missing display with a removed benefit

If a benefit is absent from a summary card, open the detailed terms and check the operator’s current support information. Record “not stated” until the operator confirms whether it is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should you conclude that the price or benefits changed?

You have a defensible conclusion when the operator’s current listing and the matching TRAI tariff entry refer to the same circle, connection type, and plan, and your dated older record shows different terms. State exactly what changed—such as price, validity, daily data, SMS quota, or a named bundled service—and identify the dates and sources.

If the records do not match on plan identity, circle, or connection type, the correct conclusion is that the evidence is inconclusive. Recheck the filters and ask the operator for clarification rather than treating the difference as a confirmed revision. If the advertised terms are consistent but money was deducted unexpectedly, pursue itemized usage details as a separate billing complaint.
