Use the official EPFO Member Passbook and Claim Status portal. Sign in with your Universal Account Number (UAN), open the passbook for the member ID used by your former employer, and inspect the interest entries and closing balance. Then open every other member-ID passbook linked to your UAN so you can distinguish missing interest from an incomplete transfer or a balance left in an older account.
Leaving a job by itself does not prove that an EPF account has become inoperative. Government explanations tie the 36-month test to age 55 or actual retirement, whichever is later, rather than to the date contributions stopped. Your passbook is therefore the best starting record for determining what has been credited and where your balance sits.

What the EPFO passbook can tell you
A balance enquiry gives you a figure. The passbook gives you the ledger behind that figure: contributions, transfers, withdrawals, interest credits and the closing balance for each member ID. That distinction matters after a job change because one UAN can be associated with several member IDs created by different employers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInterest under the EPF scheme is calculated using monthly running balances and credited through the scheme’s annual accounting process. Do not assume that an account must display a separate interest line every month. A missing monthly line is not, on its own, evidence that interest has stopped. Review the full accounting period and the closing balance instead.

The reviewed official material does not establish one interest rate that applies to every financial year or every account. For that reason, use the amount and posting shown in your own passbook rather than applying a rate found in an old article or message.
How to check your former employer’s EPF interest
- Open the official Member Passbook and Claim Status service. Use EPFO’s current passbook page rather than an unofficial balance app or a link sent in a message.
- Sign in with your UAN, password and captcha. The passbook service requires the same UAN-based credentials used for member services. If the password is rejected, use the recovery options in the current UAN member portal before creating another account.
- Choose the member ID for the job you left. The employer name or establishment information shown in the selector can help you identify the correct record. Do not stop after opening only the newest member ID.
- Read the ledger through the latest completed period. Look for the employee and employer contribution entries, any transfer-in or transfer-out entry, interest credits and the closing balance. Compare the closing balance with the previous year’s closing figure, allowing for contributions, withdrawals and transfers that occurred during the year.
- Check each other member ID linked to your UAN. An older employment account may still hold the balance, while the latest account may show no corresponding transfer credit. Record the member ID, employer and closing balance for each passbook so you can compare them without relying on memory.
- Look specifically for a transfer credit in the latest passbook. EPFO’s transfer guidance says a completed transfer appears as a credit in the latest passbook. If the older passbook still shows the balance and the latest one has no transfer credit, treat the transfer as unresolved rather than as lost interest.
How to read an interest entry correctly
Expect annual accounting, not a monthly promise
The EPF scheme describes interest as being calculated on monthly running balances and credited at year end. Contributions made at different times therefore affect the calculation for different numbers of months. A passbook can show the contribution history and then a later interest posting; the absence of a line for each individual month does not establish that no interest was earned.
Compare like with like
When checking whether the balance is growing, compare the same member ID’s closing balance across complete accounting periods. First account for new contributions, partial withdrawals, advances and transfers. Only then assess whether the interest posting appears in the expected period. Comparing an old account’s closing balance with a current account that has received a transfer can produce a misleading result.
Separate the ledger from a quick balance enquiry
EPFO lists two quick balance options on its passbook page: a missed call to 9966044425 and an SMS containing EPFOHO UAN <LAN> to 7738299899. These options can confirm a balance, but they do not replace reviewing the detailed passbook when you are trying to identify an interest entry, transfer or posting gap.
Four explanations for a balance that looks wrong
| What you observe | Most relevant explanation to check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The old member ID still has money, while the latest one does not show it. | The transfer may not have completed or may not yet be visible in the latest passbook. | Compare both ledgers and look for a transfer-in credit in the latest passbook. |
| Contributions are present, but the expected interest line is absent for a recent period. | The annual posting may not yet be visible, or the ledger may still be undergoing processing. | Check the full-year record and monitor the official passbook for a later posting. |
| No new contributions appear after your employment ended. | The account simply has no recent deposits; that fact alone does not establish inoperative status. | Review the interest and closing-balance entries and apply the age-and-retirement rule described below. |
| The account appears to meet the conditions for an inoperative account. | Interest treatment can change from the date the account becomes inoperative under the applicable provision. | Confirm the dates and account treatment with EPFO, especially if the case is disputed. |
Does EPF interest stop three years after you leave?
Not automatically. A 2017 Government of India answer describes the amended inoperative-account definition as a period of 36 months without a claim after attaining age 55 or after actual retirement, whichever is later. That wording does not make the last working day the start of a universal three-year countdown.
EPFO’s 29 March 2016 release said that interest crediting on inoperative accounts resumed with effect from 1 April 2016. The release connected that policy decision with the rule permitting full withdrawal on retirement after age 58. These are dated official explanations, not a blanket statement that every former employee continues to receive interest indefinitely.
The EPF Scheme’s interest provisions state that interest is not credited from the date an account becomes inoperative under the referenced provision. Whether that date has arrived depends on the relevant age, retirement and claim facts in your case. If those facts are unclear, use the passbook to establish the ledger history and ask EPFO to confirm the account’s treatment rather than assuming that “three years without a job” is the rule.

When an old balance is missing from your current UAN view
Check for multiple member IDs
Employment changes can create a separate member ID for each establishment. The UAN acts as the common identifier, but the passbook selector may still show individual employment records. Open the older passbooks one by one, including records from jobs you left several years ago.
Use the transfer credit as the evidence of completion
EPFO’s transfer FAQ says a completed transfer is reflected as a credit in the latest passbook. An amount remaining in the earlier passbook, without a corresponding credit in the latest one, is a reason to investigate transfer status. It is not proof that the money or its interest has disappeared.
Keep the records needed for an enquiry
Note each member ID, employer name, dates of employment, the old closing balance and what appears in the current passbook. Screenshots or downloaded statements can help you explain exactly which ledger entry is missing when you contact EPFO. Protect those records because they contain personal account information.
Could a posting delay explain a missing entry?
Yes. EPFO reported that passbook updates for wage months September and October 2025 were temporarily under processing during revamped ECR ledger posting. That notice is historical evidence that ledger visibility can lag processing; it is not evidence of a current outage or a promise that every absent entry will appear on a particular date.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your contributions and the rest of the year are visible but a recent interest or wage-period entry is not, check the passbook again after the relevant processing cycle. Avoid treating a short-term display gap as proof of an inoperative account. If a complete period remains unexplained, move to an official enquiry with the member IDs and dates you recorded.
Use a simple timeline to diagnose the problem
Start with the date of your last contribution, but do not use it as the only legal date. Mark the employment end date, the last contribution month visible in the ledger, any date on which you requested a transfer or withdrawal, and your age at the time you stopped working. Then identify whether an actual retirement date is relevant. This timeline lets you test the official 36-month wording against your circumstances instead of applying a slogan about “three years.”
Next, separate events that affect ownership from events that affect posting. A transfer request can move a balance from one member ID to another; a passbook update can make an already processed transaction visible later. A withdrawal or advance reduces the balance but is not an interest failure. Write down the event, the member ID on which it appears and the date shown. This makes it easier to tell EPFO whether you are reporting an accounting question, a transfer question or an access problem.

What to compare before concluding interest is missing
- Same account: Compare one member ID with itself across complete periods. Do not compare an old passbook directly with a new passbook that may contain a transfer.
- Same type of figure: Match closing balance to closing balance. A running balance before a transfer or withdrawal is not comparable with a final balance afterward.
- Complete period: Check whether the period you are reviewing is complete and whether EPFO has indicated that ledger posting is still being processed.
- All transactions: Account for employee and employer contributions, transfer credits, transfer-outs, withdrawals and advances before isolating the interest line.
- Account status: Apply the age-and-retirement conditions for an inoperative account separately from the fact that contributions stopped.
This method also prevents a common error: seeing no interest line in the latest member ID and assuming the old balance earned nothing. If the old member ID still contains the balance, the immediate issue is location or transfer status. If neither passbook explains the amount, preserve the statements and escalate with precise dates.

What to do if you cannot sign in
Recover access through the current UAN member service
Use the current EPFO member portal’s UAN recovery and activation options. Verify that the mobile number and identity details associated with the UAN are available to complete recovery. Do not create a second UAN simply because an old password no longer works; duplicate records can make member-ID matching harder.
Use UMANG for UAN activation or generation
EPFO identifies UMANG as a channel for UAN activation and generation. Follow the current in-app instructions and retain the UAN that matches your employment records. Once access is restored, return to the official passbook service for the detailed ledger.
Use missed call or SMS only for a quick balance
If the passbook is temporarily inaccessible, the missed-call number 9966044425 and SMS format EPFOHO UAN <LAN> sent to 7738299899 can provide a balance enquiry, subject to EPFO’s service requirements. They will not show the complete interest and transfer history needed to resolve a disputed entry.
When to contact EPFO
Contact EPFO through its current official member-service and grievance channels when you have checked every member ID and still cannot explain the balance, transfer or interest entry. Include your UAN, the relevant member ID, employer details, employment dates and the exact passbook period that is missing. State whether the older account still shows a balance and whether the latest account shows a transfer credit.
An older EPFO helpdesk document describes assistance with tracing a member ID and seeking merger or settlement. Because that document is not confirmation that the same facility remains available today, ask EPFO which current channel handles your request instead of relying on an old email address, phone number or form.
Questions to include in an EPFO enquiry
Be specific rather than writing only “interest is missing.” Ask which member ID currently holds the balance, whether a transfer credit has been posted to the latest passbook, whether the period is awaiting ledger posting, and from what date EPFO considers the account inoperative, if that status is relevant. If your records show an old balance but no transfer, identify both member IDs in the same request. If your question concerns age or retirement, provide the dates EPFO needs to apply the 36-month wording.

A practical EPF interest-check checklist
- Sign in to the official EPFO Member Passbook and Claim Status service.
- Open the passbook for the employer you left and review the complete ledger and closing balance.
- Compare the closing balance with the previous year after accounting for contributions, withdrawals and transfers.
- Open every other member ID linked to your UAN.
- Look for a transfer-in credit in the latest passbook and a remaining balance in the old one.
- Do not infer inoperative status solely from the date your job ended.
- For a recent missing entry, allow for processing visibility and check official notices rather than assuming interest has stopped.
- If access fails, use the current UAN portal, UMANG, or the listed missed-call and SMS services for a temporary balance check.
- Escalate unresolved ownership, transfer or interest questions to EPFO with the exact member-ID and ledger details.
- Never share OTPs, identity documents, bank details or make a payment in response to an unsolicited call.
The key takeaway
Your former employer’s member-ID passbook—not a single balance message—shows whether interest has been posted and where the balance is held. Check every member ID, verify any transfer credit, account for annual posting and distinguish a recent display delay from the separate inoperative-account rule. Because the rule depends on age, retirement and claim circumstances, confirm an unusual case with EPFO rather than assuming interest stopped exactly three years after your last contribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does EPF interest stop as soon as I resign?
No. Resignation or a gap in contributions does not by itself establish that the account is inoperative. The Government of India’s 2017 explanation refers to 36 months without a claim after age 55 or actual retirement, whichever is later. Check your passbook and confirm an unusual case with EPFO.
How can I see EPF interest in my passbook?
Sign in to the official EPFO Member Passbook and Claim Status service with your UAN, password and captcha. Open the relevant member ID and review the ledger, interest credit entries and closing balance across a complete accounting period.

Why is my old PF balance not showing in my latest UAN passbook?
Open every member ID linked to your UAN. A completed transfer should appear as a credit in the latest passbook. If the old passbook still has the balance and the latest one has no transfer credit, investigate the transfer rather than assuming the money or interest is lost.
Is a monthly interest line required in the EPF passbook?
No. EPF interest is calculated on monthly running balances and credited through an annual accounting process. The absence of a separate line every month is not, by itself, proof that interest was not earned.
Can a recent missing entry be caused by an EPFO posting delay?
It can be. EPFO reported temporary processing for passbook updates covering wage months September and October 2025 during revamped ledger posting. That historical notice shows that visibility can lag processing, but it does not establish a current outage or a guaranteed posting date.

Provide your UAN, the relevant member ID or IDs, employer details, employment dates and the exact ledger period in question. Say whether the old passbook still shows a balance and whether the latest passbook contains a transfer credit. Do not send an OTP, password or payment.
Does EPFO’s 2016 interest announcement mean every former employee earns interest forever?
No. EPFO’s 29 March 2016 release reported that interest crediting on inoperative accounts resumed from 1 April 2016 and discussed the retirement withdrawal rule at age 58. The treatment of an individual account still depends on the applicable status and dates.
The Bottom Line
Check the detailed EPFO passbook for every member ID linked to your UAN. Compare complete periods, look for transfer credits and allow for posting delays; do not treat leaving a job as an automatic three-year interest cutoff. If age, retirement, transfer or ledger facts remain unclear, ask EPFO through its current official channels.
