How to Check Whether Your Area Qualifies for IRS Disaster Tax Relief

Use the IRS’s current state and disaster announcement—not a general disaster declaration—to determine eligibility. Open the IRS disaster tax relief or News Around the Nation pages, select your state, find the notice for the specific disaster, and compare its covered counties or other named locations with your home, business, or record location. Then read the notice’s postponement dates, covered tax actions, deposits and exceptions. Relief is generally applied automatically when the IRS identifies an affected taxpayer by ZIP code. If you recently moved, your address is outdated, or you qualify through records or another connection outside the listed area, call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227.

Start with the IRS notice for the specific disaster

Disaster tax relief is not determined simply because a storm, flood, wildfire or other event affected your community, or because another agency issued a disaster declaration. The IRS announcement for that particular incident defines the locations covered, the postponement period, the tax acts included and the exceptions. A county that received help for one event may not be included in a later event, and the deadline can differ from one notice to another.

The IRS directs taxpayers to its state-by-state announcements. You can begin at IRS.gov and use the site search for “around the nation,” then choose your state. The disaster tax relief pages provide the same kind of area-specific announcement. Always use the notice tied to the disaster and incident period affecting you, rather than an older notice for the same state.

Five-minute eligibility check

  1. Open the official IRS disaster announcements. On IRS.gov, search for “around the nation” and select your state, or open the IRS disaster tax relief information.
  2. Identify the exact incident. Match the notice’s disaster description and incident dates to the event that affected you.
  3. Check the covered-area list. Look for your county, reservation, tribal area or other locality named in the notice. Read any later update because the IRS can add areas after the initial announcement.
  4. Confirm the postponement window. Note the dates on which an otherwise due return, payment or other act must fall to receive relief.
  5. Read what is included and excluded. The notice controls which returns, payments, deposits and other tax obligations are postponed. Do not assume every tax deadline moves.
  6. Check how the IRS identifies you. If your address of record is in the covered area, relief is generally applied automatically. If your situation is not reflected in IRS records, call 866-562-5227.

This process answers “Does my county qualify?” more reliably than a generic ZIP-code search. The IRS uses ZIP codes to identify many affected taxpayers automatically, but the announcement’s named-area list and rules remain the controlling source.

Where to find the controlling announcement

IRS News Around the Nation

IRS Publication 3067 (Rev. 2-2026) tells taxpayers to visit IRS.gov, click “Search,” type “around the nation,” and select their state to see disaster-related relief. The state page links to announcements for individual incidents. Use the publication’s instructions as a navigation method, not as a substitute for the current incident notice.

IRS disaster tax relief pages

The IRS also maintains disaster-relief guidance that explains how relief works and directs taxpayers to area announcements. These pages provide general rules; the incident-specific notice supplies the operative dates, locations, covered acts and exclusions.

Updates to an existing notice

A notice can expand its covered area after initial publication. Recheck the announcement if your locality was not listed when you first looked, or if the IRS has issued an update for the same disaster. Keep the notice’s publication date and any update dates with your records so you know which version you relied on.

How to read the covered-area and deadline language

Covered locations

Find the paragraph or list that identifies the affected counties or other localities. Match the legal name used by the notice, not only a nearby city or mailing address. If the notice names a reservation, tribal area or another defined locality, verify that your location falls within that description.

Postponement period

Notices state a beginning date and a postponed due date, often describing obligations that fall on or after the disaster date and before a specified end date. An obligation outside that window does not move merely because you live in the same county. The notice may also specify separate treatment for tax deposits or other time-sensitive acts.

Covered tax acts

Read the full list of returns, payments and other acts postponed. A notice can cover individual or business filings, estimated-tax payments, information returns and other listed actions, while excluding particular deposits or obligations. The headline date is not a universal extension for every form or payment.

Who can qualify for IRS disaster tax relief?

The IRS generally considers the taxpayer’s connection to the covered area and whether a postponed tax act was affected. The following categories are identified in IRS disaster guidance:

  • An individual whose main home is in the covered disaster area.
  • A business or sole proprietor whose principal place of business is in the area.
  • A taxpayer outside the area whose records needed to meet a postponed deadline are located in the area.
  • Certain disaster-relief workers affiliated with a recognized government or philanthropic organization.
  • A person visiting the covered area who was injured or killed as a result of the disaster.
  • Other affected people whom the IRS determines qualify under the circumstances.

Being outside the listed area does not automatically disqualify you, but the IRS may not identify you through the normal ZIP-code process. If your qualifying connection is your records, relief work or another affected-person category, contact the disaster hotline and explain the situation.

Automatic relief, ZIP codes and recent moves

When automatic relief usually works

The IRS says it generally applies relief automatically when its address-of-record information places an individual or business in a qualifying ZIP code. You normally do not file a separate request merely to receive the postponement described in the notice. Keep the announcement and your records in case a filing or payment is later questioned.

Why a recent move can cause a mismatch

If you moved into the disaster area after the IRS received your last address, the IRS may still have an address outside the covered ZIP code. The same problem can occur when a business relocates or when the IRS’s records do not reflect where necessary records are maintained. Update your address with the IRS after a move and call 866-562-5227 about the affected deadline rather than assuming automatic relief will appear.

When to call

Call the disaster hotline if you recently moved into a covered area, live outside it but believe your records or duties qualify, or have another eligibility question that the notice does not resolve. Have the disaster name, your location, the relevant tax obligation and the address information the IRS may have on file available when you call.

What an IRS notice does—and does not—postpone

IRS disaster relief is a postponement of specified tax acts for an identified period. It is not a blanket cancellation of tax, a universal extension of every deadline, or proof that every loss is deductible.

  • Returns: Only the returns and filing acts listed or covered by the notice receive the postponed date.
  • Payments: A payment may qualify when the notice includes that type of tax and due date; read the exact language instead of assuming all balances are deferred.
  • Tax deposits: Notices can contain separate rules or exclusions for deposits. Check that section before changing a deposit schedule.
  • Other acts: Information returns, elections or other administrative actions are covered only when the notice says so.

Keep the postponed date tied to the particular incident. A deadline in one disaster notice cannot be borrowed for another county or another event.

Example: how to use a state-specific notice

An IRS Indiana announcement dated September 2, 2026 illustrates the method. It covers named Indiana counties affected by storms, winds, tornadoes and flooding beginning August 11, 2026. For covered taxpayers, it generally postpones certain deadlines that fall on or after August 11 and before February 1, 2027, until February 1, 2027. The notice also describes exclusions and the treatment of certain deposits.

  1. Find the Indiana notice rather than relying on a general statement about storms in the state.
  2. Check whether your county is one of the counties named in that notice.
  3. Confirm that your filing, payment or other act falls within the notice’s stated period and is one of the covered acts.
  4. Read the exclusions and deposit language before moving a payment or deposit.

This Indiana date is an example of how an IRS notice operates, not a nationwide deadline. A taxpayer in another state—or a taxpayer affected by a different Indiana incident—must use the notice for that specific disaster.

If your locality is not listed

Do not substitute a general disaster declaration

A federal or state disaster declaration, by itself, does not tell you which IRS deadlines are postponed. The IRS must issue a tax-relief announcement defining the covered area and acts. Continue checking the IRS state announcements for a notice tied to your event.

Check for an expanded area

Review the notice for amendments or later announcements. The IRS can add counties or other areas after the original publication. Use the most current version when deciding whether a location qualifies.

If your main home and business are outside the listed area but necessary tax records are inside it, or you fall into another affected-person category, call the hotline. Explain the connection rather than trying to force your situation into a ZIP-code rule.

Keep filing and paying unless the notice covers the act

Until the IRS confirms that your obligation is postponed, follow the original due date when possible. Do not infer relief for an unlisted form, payment or deposit from the existence of relief for another obligation.

Deadline relief is separate from a casualty-loss deduction

Qualifying for a postponed tax deadline does not establish that a damaged home, vehicle, inventory item or other property loss is deductible. These are separate tax questions with different rules.

IRS guidance says eligible federally declared disaster losses may qualify for casualty-loss treatment. Publication 547 describes rules that can allow an election to claim an eligible loss on the preceding year’s return. Whether an election is available, what documentation is required, which forms apply and when the election must be made depend on the facts and the tax year.

Therefore, use the disaster notice to determine whether a deadline moves, and use the casualty-loss guidance to analyze a potential deduction. Do not treat one result as proof of the other.

A practical recordkeeping checklist

  • Save the IRS announcement URL, publication date and any update that changes the covered area or deadline.
  • Write down the disaster name, incident dates and the locality listed in the notice.
  • Identify each return, payment, deposit or other act you believe is postponed.
  • Record the original due date and the postponed date stated by the notice.
  • Keep evidence of your home address, principal business location or the location of necessary records if your qualification is not obvious from your ZIP code.
  • Document a recent move and the date you updated your address with the IRS.
  • Save the date of any call to 866-562-5227 and the guidance you received.

These records help distinguish an IRS postponement from an ordinary late filing and make it easier to explain an outside-area qualification.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Searching for a universal IRS ZIP-code lookup

The IRS material directs taxpayers to state and area announcements. ZIP codes help the IRS apply relief automatically, but they are not a replacement for reading the incident notice. Use the named-area list and the notice’s rules.

Using an old notice for a new event

Disasters in the same state can have different incident dates, counties and postponed deadlines. Match the notice to the event that affected you and check for updates.

Assuming every tax obligation is extended

Read the covered-acts and exclusions sections. A postponed filing date may not change a deposit schedule or another obligation that the notice excludes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring an address mismatch

Automatic relief depends on the IRS’s records. Recent movers and taxpayers qualifying through records or other connections should update their address and call the hotline.

Confusing tax relief with a deductible loss

A deadline postponement and a casualty-loss deduction require separate analyses. Consult the applicable IRS casualty-loss guidance for the property-loss question.

Decision guide: which next step fits your situation?

Your situation Next step
Your main home is in a locality named in the current IRS notice. Read the covered acts, postponement dates and exceptions; relief is generally applied automatically when your IRS address of record matches the qualifying ZIP code.
Your principal place of business is in the named area. Use the notice to identify the business returns, payments and other acts covered, then check the deposit and exclusion language.
Your necessary tax records are in the area, but you live or operate elsewhere. Call 866-562-5227 to self-identify and ask how the notice applies to the postponed act.
You recently moved into the disaster area. Update your address with the IRS and call 866-562-5227 because automatic ZIP-code identification may not yet reflect the move.
You were a qualifying relief worker, were injured while visiting, or fit another affected-person category. Contact the hotline and explain the category and the tax obligation involved.
Your county is not named and you have no apparent outside-area connection. Check for a later expansion or amended notice; until coverage is confirmed, do not assume a postponed deadline.

What to do before changing a due date

  1. Verify the disaster and incident period.
  2. Verify that your county or other locality appears in the current covered-area list.
  3. Match the original due date to the notice’s postponement window.
  4. Confirm that the specific return, payment, deposit or other act is covered.
  5. Check exclusions and special rules.
  6. Confirm that the IRS can identify you automatically, or call 866-562-5227 if it cannot.
  7. Save a copy of the notice and your eligibility notes with your tax records.

That sequence prevents the two most costly errors: relying on a broad disaster announcement instead of an IRS tax notice, and moving an obligation that the notice did not include.
