The status will show whether your return was received, your refund was approved or the refund was sent. If the IRS needs information, it generally sends a notice by mail. Read that notice, identify its number, and use only the response method and deadline printed there.
What the IRS status can tell you
The refund tracker has three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. After the return is processed and the refund is approved, the tracker can provide a personalized date. Your IRS Online Account also displays refund status.

A delayed status by itself does not prove that the IRS is waiting for documents. Returns can take longer because of corrections, additional review or credit-related processing. Check the tracker and your mail before assuming that a particular notice is pending.
The IRS generally contacts taxpayers by mail when it needs more information. An online status that has not changed is therefore different from an actual request for identity verification or supporting tax records.

Check your refund in the official IRS channels
- Open the official tracker or sign in to your IRS Online Account. Use the IRS refund pages rather than a third-party status site.
- Select the correct tax year. A prior-year return and a current-year return have different status-availability windows.
- Enter the information exactly as filed. The tracker asks for your SSN or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount in whole dollars. A mismatch can prevent the lookup even when the return is in the IRS system.
- Compare entries with your filed return. If a value is rejected, check the return or an IRS transcript for the number, filing status and refund amount you actually reported.
- Read every instruction shown with the status. The tracker may display a processing update or a date after approval. Save or print the status for your records if the IRS has given you a date or an action.
- Check your physical mail. Look for an IRS notice that names the issue and gives a response channel. Do not infer that a notice is outstanding solely because the tracker is slow.
- Respond only as the notice directs. Use the address, upload service, telephone number or other method printed on that notice, and meet the deadline shown there.
When the status should become available
The IRS publishes different intervals for the first status update, depending on how and when you filed:
| Filing situation | When status is generally available | Typical refund timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year return filed electronically | About 24 hours after e-filing | Most e-filed refunds are issued within 3 weeks |
| Prior-year return filed electronically | About 3 days after e-filing | Most e-filed refunds are issued within 3 weeks |
| Return filed on paper | About 4 weeks after mailing | Usually 6 or more weeks |
These are the IRS’s usual processing intervals, not guaranteed dates for an individual return. The IRS explains the current ranges on its Refunds page and in its April 21, 2026 Tax Tip. A return that requires review, correction or additional information can take longer.
Identify what the notice is asking for
Find the notice or letter number near the top of the first page. Similar-looking notices can require completely different actions. This guide summarizes the most common notices connected with a refund hold:

| Notice | What it generally means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CP5071, CP5071F or Letter 5071C | The IRS needs you to verify your identity and the tax return before processing can continue. | Follow the notice’s identity-and-return verification instructions. Have the notice and your return records available. If you did not file the return, report that through the verification process. |
| Letter 12C | The IRS needs information to process an individual income-tax return, such as missing or corrected forms or verification of income, withholding, credits or identifying numbers. | Send the requested information within 20 days of the letter, using the method and address in the letter. Respond even if you disagree; do not file Form 1040-X solely to answer Letter 12C. |
| CP05 | The IRS needs more time to verify income, withholding, credits or business income and may request documents after its review. | Read the notice carefully and wait for any further request. If it tells you to respond, follow those instructions. |
| CP05A | The IRS needs supporting documentation to verify reported income, withholding, credits or business income before issuing the refund. | Gather the records listed and reply by the notice date through the response method identified in the notice. |
| CP05B | The IRS says income on the return does not match third-party documents and is holding the refund while it requests information. | Submit the requested documentation by the stated date to the address or channel printed on the notice. |
Notice names are only a starting point. The exact tax year, facts on your return and wording of your letter control what you must send. Use the IRS’s notice-specific pages for the instructions that apply to your number.
How to handle an identity-verification notice
CP5071, CP5071F and Letter 5071C
The IRS uses these notices when it needs to verify both that you are the taxpayer and that you filed the return shown in the notice. The IRS describes the reason as: “We sent you a CP5071 series notice because we need you to verify your identity and the return.”
- Open the CP5071 series guidance and follow the channel named in your letter.
- If the notice offers the IRS verification service, use that service. Otherwise use the telephone or alternative method listed in the letter.
- Keep the notice, the tax return for the year named, and any records the service asks you to consult nearby.
- Complete the return-verification questions as well as the identity questions. Identity verification alone may not finish the review if the return itself remains unverified.
- If you did not file the return, use the process in the notice to report that fact rather than confirming a return you do not recognize.
The IRS’s Verify your return instructions explain which notices qualify for the online service and what happens afterward. Processing can take up to 9 weeks after identity and return verification.
How to handle a request for tax documents
Letter 12C
Letter 12C means the IRS cannot finish processing the individual return with the information currently available. The IRS wording is direct: “We need more information to process your individual income tax return.” The letter may list a missing form, a corrected form, income or withholding evidence, credit documentation or an identifying-number issue.

- Read the entire letter and make a checklist of every item requested.
- Send the documents within 20 days of the letter date, unless the letter gives a different deadline or response instruction.
- Use only the mailing address, fax number, upload tool or other channel printed in your letter. Do not substitute an address from another IRS notice.
- Include the identifying information the letter requests so the IRS can match the response to your return.
- Keep a complete copy of the letter, every page submitted and proof of delivery or upload.
The IRS says not to file Form 1040-X merely to answer Letter 12C. If a refund is due, the IRS generally sends it about 6–8 weeks after receiving the response, although that is an estimate rather than a promise. Read Understanding your Letter 12C for the document list and submission directions.
CP05
A CP05 tells you that the IRS is taking more time to verify income, withholding, credits or business income. It may request evidence later. The notice itself may not require an immediate submission, so read it for a specific response instruction and retain it with your return records. The Taxpayer Advocate Service explains the review in its CP05 notice guide.
CP05A
CP05A is an active supporting-document request. The IRS states: “We need more supporting documentation to verify your income and federal tax withholding before we can issue your refund.” Collect the exact wage, withholding, income, credit or business records listed in the notice and send them by the notice date through the named method. Details are on Understanding your CP05A notice.
CP05B
CP05B concerns an income mismatch with third-party information. The IRS says: “We’re holding your refund until we receive the information requested from you to determine your reported income is correct.” Follow the document list and deadline in the letter, and use the address or electronic channel printed there. See Understanding your CP05B notice.
Identity verification is not the same as sending documents
A CP5071-series notice asks you to establish your identity and confirm the return. A CP05A or CP05B notice asks for supporting tax records. They are separate processes, even when both delay a refund.
- For an identity notice, follow the verification service or contact path in that notice and complete the return questions.
- For a document notice, assemble the specified evidence and submit it through the response method named in the notice.
- Do not send income documents merely because you completed identity verification, and do not assume identity verification satisfies a document request.
- Do not send documents to a guessed address or answer a different notice’s checklist.
A quick comparison before you act
Use the notice number, not just the fact that your refund is late, to decide what happens next:
| Situation | What the IRS needs | Your immediate action | Published follow-up timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| No notice; tracker still processing | No specific request has been identified. | Keep checking the official tracker and mail. Do not send unsolicited records. | No universal estimate beyond normal processing ranges. |
| CP5071, CP5071F or Letter 5071C | Identity and confirmation that you filed the listed return. | Use the verification service or contact route in the notice and answer both sets of questions. | Up to 9 weeks after identity and return verification. |
| Letter 12C | Missing or corrected information needed to process the individual return. | Send every requested item within 20 days, or by the different date printed in the letter. | About 6–8 weeks after the IRS receives the response if a refund is due. |
| CP05 | Time to review income, withholding or credits. | Wait unless the notice specifically asks you to respond; follow any later request. | No single published completion time. |
| CP05A or CP05B | Supporting evidence for income, withholding or a reported-income mismatch. | Send the listed documents by the deadline and through the stated channel. | Depends on the notice and review; no universal interval is published. |
This comparison does not replace the letter. A notice can contain tax-year-specific instructions, a special upload option or a different response date.

Common mistakes that can create another delay
- Using the wrong refund amount: enter the whole-dollar amount from the return you filed, not an amount recalculated later or a figure that includes cents.
- Choosing the wrong filing status: the tracker’s lookup fields must match the filed return, even if your circumstances later changed.
- Sending a partial response: a Letter 12C, CP05A or CP05B checklist should be answered item by item. Missing one requested record can leave the review unresolved.
- Using a generic IRS address: notices often direct taxpayers to a particular address, fax number or upload service. A response sent elsewhere may not be matched promptly.
- Confusing a notice with a scam or ignoring it: compare the number and instructions with the IRS notice guidance, then use the contact route in the letter if something is unclear.
- Filing an unnecessary amended return: the IRS specifically says not to file Form 1040-X solely to answer Letter 12C.
- Assuming a phone call accelerates processing: representatives generally cannot move a return ahead of other work. Calling is useful when the tracker or notice directs you to call.
What happens after you respond
Keep the notice and your submission together so you can establish what was requested and when you answered. The IRS does not publish one universal completion time for every document review. Two notice-specific estimates are available: a Letter 12C refund is generally sent about 6–8 weeks after the IRS receives the response, and identity-and-return verification can take up to 9 weeks after completion.

When calling the IRS helps—and when it does not
Use the tracker first. IRS representatives generally cannot speed up refund processing, so repeated calls are not a way to move a return ahead in line. Call when the tracker or a notice directs you to, or when the IRS says your situation qualifies for assistance.
If an identity-verification letter gives you a telephone number, that number is for the verification process and may not provide other refund-account information. Use the route described in the letter for that issue. For general refund-inquiry routes, see the IRS Refund inquiries page.
Troubleshoot the most common lookup problems
The tracker cannot find your return
Confirm that you selected the correct tax year and entered the SSN or ITIN, filing status and whole-dollar refund amount exactly as they appear on the filed return. Check the IRS’s availability interval for your filing method before treating the absence of a result as an error.

Compare each field with the filed return or an IRS transcript. Common causes are selecting a different filing status, entering a refund amount that includes cents or using a number from an amended or corrected calculation rather than the original filed return.
The status has not changed
A static status does not identify the cause. Check your mail, look for a notice number, and follow any notice that arrives. If no notice has arrived, continue checking the official tracker rather than sending unsolicited records.

You received a notice but do not know what to send
Use the notice number and the exact IRS page for that notice. Make a list from the letter itself, and contact the channel printed on it if the request is unclear. Do not rely on a general refund page to replace the letter’s document list or deadline.

When a delayed refund does not mean a notice is coming
The IRS can take longer because it is correcting return data, reviewing a credit, matching information or handling a paper return. A delay is a reason to check the official channels, not proof that the IRS has mailed a request. If the tracker remains in processing and no notice arrives, continue monitoring rather than mailing records the IRS has not requested.
How to organize a response before sending it
- Write the notice number, tax year and response deadline at the top of your checklist.
- Mark each requested form, statement, schedule or explanation as you locate it.
- Check that names, identifying numbers and tax-year references are consistent with the return and the notice.
- Use the exact submission method named by the IRS. If the notice offers a secure upload, follow its instructions instead of improvising an email or mailing address.
- Review the packet once, make a complete copy, and retain delivery or upload evidence.
Good recordkeeping does not shorten the IRS review, but it prevents a second delay caused by an incomplete or misdirected response.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether the IRS needs more information for my refund?
Check Where’s My Refund? or your IRS Online Account, then check your physical mail. The IRS generally sends a notice when it needs information. A delayed tracker status alone does not establish that a document request is pending.
What information does Where’s My Refund? require?
You need the tax year, your SSN or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount in whole dollars as shown on the filed return. The tracker follows Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent.
Recommended Free Tools
How long should I wait before checking my refund status?
Status is generally available about 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, 3 days after e-filing a prior-year return and 4 weeks after filing a paper return. Most e-filed refunds are issued within 3 weeks; mailed returns usually take 6 or more weeks. These are estimates, not guarantees.

What is the difference between CP5071 and CP05A?
CP5071, CP5071F and Letter 5071C request identity and return verification. CP05A requests supporting tax documents for income, withholding, credits or business income. Follow the exact process and deadline in the notice you received.
What should I do with Letter 12C?
Read the full letter, gather every item listed and respond within 20 days unless it gives another deadline. Use only its address, fax, upload service or other response method. The IRS says not to file Form 1040-X solely to answer Letter 12C.
How long after identity verification will the refund arrive?
The IRS says processing can take up to 9 weeks after you complete identity and return verification. Continue checking the official tracker and read any later notice.
Can calling the IRS make the refund arrive faster?
Generally no. Representatives usually cannot speed processing. Call when the tracker or a notice directs you to, and use the telephone number on an identity-verification letter for that verification process.
Should I send tax documents if the tracker is simply delayed?
No. A delay can result from review, correction or credit processing. Send documents only when a notice requests them, and use the response channel and deadline printed in that notice.
The Bottom Line
Use Where’s My Refund? or your IRS Online Account, match every lookup field to the filed return, and check your mail for a notice number. If the IRS asks for identity verification or documents, follow that notice exactly, meet its deadline, keep proof of your response and do not assume a phone call or unsolicited paperwork will speed the refund.
