To check whether GST is included, obtain the insurer-issued premium invoice or tax invoice and identify three figures: the taxable premium (base premium), the GST or tax amount, and the total payable. For employer-sponsored group health insurance and group life or term insurance in India, the Department of Financial Services says GST continues at 18%. The 22 September 2025 exemption applies to qualifying individual life and individual health policies, not group policies.

A payroll deduction or benefits statement may show only your employee contribution, a combined amount, or a share of a consolidated master-policy premium. That figure alone cannot prove whether GST is included. If the statement is not itemized, request the underlying insurer invoice or a written breakdown from HR, the benefits administrator, or the insurer.

What you should see before doing any calculation

Keep these documents together:

  • the insurer-issued premium invoice, tax invoice, debit note, or payment receipt;
  • the policy schedule or certificate showing whether the cover is group or individual;
  • your employer benefits statement, payroll slip, or member contribution notice; and
  • for a renewal or instalment, the invoice and payment date.

The insurer’s document is the primary record for the premium and tax. A payroll system can display an amount calculated by the employer rather than the insurer’s full premium. Do not infer the tax treatment from the payment method, the fact that the employer paid the insurer, or a single deduction line.

Before comparing numbers, write down the policy period, invoice number, invoice date, payment date, covered people, and whether the amount is for a new enrolment, renewal, mid-year addition, or refund. These details prevent you from comparing a monthly deduction with an annual invoice or a current deduction with a prior policy period.

First identify whether the policy is group or individual

Employer-sponsored group health insurance

A policy arranged by an employer for employees, dependants, or other eligible members is generally a group or master policy. The Department of Financial Services’ FAQ, last updated 5 January 2026, states that employer-sponsored group health insurance continues to be taxed at 18% GST.

Employer-sponsored group life or term insurance

Employer-provided group term cover is a form of group life insurance for this tax question. It remains subject to 18% GST under the same government guidance. Calling the cover “term insurance” does not make it an individual policy when the employer holds the master contract.

Individual life or health insurance

The government announced a zero-GST exemption for individual life and individual health insurance policies, effective 22 September 2025. That exemption is separate from group cover. An employee who buys a personal policy outside the employer’s master arrangement should check that policy’s classification and the relevant supply and payment dates rather than applying the group rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the classification matters

The employer’s role is not, by itself, the deciding test. Ask who is named as policyholder, whether a master policy covers a defined employee population, and whether the certificate refers to a group scheme. If your documents conflict, ask the insurer to confirm the policy type in writing.

Do not rely solely on labels such as “corporate plan,” “employee insurance,” or “staff benefit.” The policyholder name, master-policy number, scheme wording, and contracting party are more useful. A personally purchased policy can be paid through payroll in some arrangements, while an employer policy can be paid directly by the employer; the payment route does not settle the classification.

Read the invoice line by line

1. Find the premium or taxable value

Look for labels such as “premium,” “base premium,” “taxable value,” or “value of supply.” This is the amount on which GST is calculated when the invoice identifies a taxable base. Some invoices may show separate components for employees, dependants, riders, or coverage periods. Add only the components that belong to the policy period and coverage being checked.

2. Find the GST or tax line

The document may show “GST,” “CGST and SGST,” “IGST,” or a combined “tax” amount. The label and split depend on the transaction’s tax details and the invoice format. Official sources do not establish a universal insurer layout or require every member statement to contain a field literally named “GST included.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Find the total payable

The total should reconcile to the taxable premium plus the displayed tax and any separately identified non-tax amounts, adjustments, or credits. If the invoice includes several tax components, add them together before comparing the result with the total.

4. Check whether the document is a member statement or the insurer’s bill

A member-facing statement can show only your share. A master-policy invoice can cover the employer’s entire insured group. When the statement has no premium base or tax line, treat it as an allocation notice, not as proof that GST is absent or included.

5. Check the coverage period and adjustments

A tax invoice may include additions, removals, endorsements, refunds, or a credit for an earlier period. A total that does not equal the simple base-plus-tax formula may therefore be correct. Identify each adjustment and ask whether GST was reversed or recalculated on it. Do not edit the insurer’s arithmetic; request clarification if the adjustment is not explained.

Calculate the expected GST for a group policy

For a group health or group life policy covered by the current government guidance, use 18% of the taxable premium base shown on the insurer’s bill:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • GST amount: taxable premium × 0.18
  • Tax-inclusive amount: taxable premium × 1.18

These formulas are an arithmetic check, not a promise that every insurer prints the same fields or rounds in the same way. Use the invoice’s stated base and follow its rounding convention.

Example: group health premium

If the invoice identifies a taxable premium of ₹10,000, the expected GST at 18% is ₹1,800 and the tax-inclusive amount is ₹11,800. If your payroll deduction is ₹11,800, that is consistent with a tax-inclusive amount only if the deduction represents the entire premium and no other adjustment is included. If the deduction is ₹5,900, it could be an employee share of the combined amount; it cannot be analyzed without the employer’s allocation method.

Example: group term premium

For a group term premium base of ₹4,000, 18% GST is ₹720 and the tax-inclusive amount is ₹4,720. A member contribution may be lower because the employer pays part of the cost, or higher if it includes other benefits. Compare the invoice base and tax with the contribution description before drawing a conclusion.

How to test a tax-inclusive figure

If an amount is described as tax-inclusive and no base is shown, dividing by 1.18 gives an indicative base for an 18% calculation. For example, ₹11,800 divided by 1.18 is ₹10,000. Use this only as a cross-check after confirming that the amount contains only the group-policy premium and GST. It is not a substitute for an invoice because payroll deductions can include employer contributions, administration adjustments, or several covers.

Use this comparison for the policy category and date

Policy situation GST treatment stated by official guidance What to verify on the document
Employer-sponsored group health policy 18% GST Group or master-policy status, taxable premium, GST line, and total
Employer-sponsored group life or term policy 18% GST Group life classification and the same three invoice figures
Qualifying individual life policy paid on or after 22 September 2025 Exempt under the stated individual-policy reform Individual policy status and supply, invoice, and payment timing
Qualifying individual health policy paid on or after 22 September 2025 Exempt under the stated individual-policy reform Individual policy status and supply, invoice, and payment timing
Qualifying individual-policy instalment paid before 22 September 2025 18% GST under the transition guidance Instalment payment date and the applicable invoice or supply event

The 22 September 2025 date does not convert an employer group policy to an exempt policy. The Department of Financial Services FAQ discusses section 14 timing rules involving supply, invoice, and payment events, and separately addresses instalments. If a document spans the transition date, ask the insurer which event determined the tax treatment.

When the bill is consolidated for the whole workforce

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs’ sectoral FAQs discuss a master or group policy issued to a registered person with one consolidated premium that is not segregated among beneficiaries. In that arrangement, the insurer’s invoice may show the employer’s total premium and tax but no employee-by-employee GST allocation.

A consolidated bill does not mean GST is missing. It means the member-level amount may be calculated later by the employer or benefits administrator. Ask for:

  • the insurer’s invoice number and invoice date;
  • the total taxable premium and total GST for the master policy;
  • the method used to allocate the employer and employee shares;
  • whether your displayed amount includes GST, and if so, how much; and
  • any adjustment for additions, removals, dependants, refunds, or mid-year coverage changes.

If the employer cannot provide a member-level tax amount because the insurer did not allocate it, request a written statement saying that the deduction is an allocated share of the consolidated tax-inclusive premium, or explaining that the employer contribution is calculated on another basis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, an employer may pay the entire group health invoice and recover only the dependant portion from employees. Another employer may split the tax-inclusive premium by salary band, coverage tier, or number of enrolled dependants. Neither allocation can be inferred from the 18% rate alone. The invoice establishes the group premium and tax; the employer’s written allocation explains your deduction.

How to handle a payroll deduction with no tax detail

  1. Copy the exact payroll description. Record the pay period, amount, and label, such as “GMC,” “group medical,” “GTL,” or “insurance recovery.”
  2. Ask what the amount represents. Request confirmation whether it is your employee share, the full premium, a tax-inclusive amount, or a reimbursement adjustment.
  3. Request the source invoice. Ask HR or benefits for the insurer invoice or a redacted copy showing the premium base, GST, total, policy period, and master-policy number.
  4. Reconcile the numbers. Compare your amount with the stated allocation method. Do not multiply an unexplained payroll deduction by 18% and call the result GST.
  5. Escalate classification questions to the insurer. If HR describes the cover as individual but the insurer document says group or master policy, ask the insurer to resolve the discrepancy in writing.

Ask for the answer in writing when the deduction affects several pay periods. A verbal explanation can be difficult to verify after a renewal or a change in enrolment. Keep the redacted invoice or written response with your payslip; personal details of other employees do not need to be disclosed.

Questions to send HR, the benefits team, or the insurer

You can use this concise request:

“Please confirm whether my deduction for [policy period] relates to an employer group health or group life policy. Please provide the insurer invoice or a written breakdown showing the taxable premium, GST rate and amount, total premium, my allocated share, and whether my amount includes GST. If the invoice is consolidated for the master policy, please explain the allocation method and identify the invoice date and payment date.”

For a date-sensitive case, add: “Please confirm which supply, invoice, or payment event determines the GST treatment and whether any instalment was paid before or on/after 22 September 2025.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the issue is a changed deduction, also ask for the effective date of the change, the reason for the adjustment, and whether it relates to a new dependant, a coverage upgrade, an employee exit, a refund, or a renewal. Those questions help separate a tax change from an ordinary premium allocation change.

Common situations that cause confusion

The payroll amount is lower than the invoice total

This can be normal when the employer pays part of the premium or when the invoice covers dependants and other employees. It does not show that GST was excluded. Obtain the allocation basis.

The invoice shows one total but no separate GST line

Do not assume the total is tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive. Ask the issuer to identify the taxable base and tax amount in writing. A document’s presentation is insurer-specific, while the group-policy rate is established by the government guidance.

The invoice has CGST and SGST, or IGST, rather than one GST figure

Add the tax components to determine the total GST. Preserve the invoice’s original split for your records; do not substitute a different tax type merely because another invoice uses it.

The policy was renewed around 22 September 2025

First determine whether it is group or individual. Group policies remain taxable under the stated 18% rule. For an individual policy, review the invoice, supply, and payment timing and any instalment schedule under the Department of Financial Services FAQ.

The certificate says “employee insurance” but does not say group

Look for the policyholder name, master-policy number, scheme name, and whether the employer is the contracting party. Ask the insurer to state the classification; a payroll label is not conclusive.

The deduction changes every month

Monthly changes may reflect additions or removals, a dependant’s enrolment, a pro-rated period, or an adjustment from the master-policy reconciliation. Compare each change with the relevant endorsement or written benefits notice instead of recalculating GST on the new deduction alone.

The invoice includes several covers

An employer statement can combine health, group term, accident, or optional dependant cover. Request the premium and tax allocation for each cover if you need to check one policy. Applying 18% to a combined unexplained figure can produce the wrong result.

Keep an audit trail

Save the invoice, policy schedule, benefits statement, payslip, and any written explanation in the same folder. Note the coverage period, invoice date, payment date, taxable base, GST amount, total, and the person or team that confirmed the figures. This record helps if your deduction changes after a new enrolment, dependent addition, employee exit, refund, or policy renewal.

If the figures still do not reconcile, ask for a corrected invoice or formal clarification rather than editing the payroll amount yourself. Tax treatment can depend on the policy classification and timing of supply, invoice, and payment. The Department of Financial Services is the source for the 18% group-policy treatment and the 22 September 2025 individual-policy exemption; IRDAI material is useful for policyholder communications, while CBIC guidance explains why a master-policy bill may be consolidated.

IRDAI material can also help you ask for clear written communication about premium changes or loadings, but it does not replace the insurer’s tax invoice or determine whether a particular employer arrangement is group or individual. Keep tax questions directed to the insurer, employer benefits administrator, or the applicable government guidance.

Printable check-list

  • Is the cover a group/master policy or an individual policy?
  • Does the document identify the taxable premium or base premium?
  • Is GST shown separately, whether as a combined amount or tax components?
  • Does premium plus GST reconcile with the stated total after adjustments?
  • Is your payroll figure an employee share, an employer-paid amount, or the full tax-inclusive premium?
  • Could the invoice involve an instalment or transition date around 22 September 2025?
  • Have you obtained a written explanation where the member statement is not itemized?
  • Have you recorded the invoice number, policy period, payment date, and allocation method?
  • Does the deduction include more than one insurance cover or a dependant adjustment?

For an employer-sponsored group health or group term policy, the practical answer is usually found by matching the insurer’s taxable base and 18% GST with the total and then tracing how that total was allocated to your payroll deduction. The individual-policy exemption does not remove GST from group cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GST included in my employer’s group health insurance premium?

Employer-sponsored group health insurance continues to attract 18% GST under the Department of Financial Services FAQ. Check the insurer invoice for the taxable premium, GST line, and total; a payroll deduction alone is not enough to tell whether tax is included.

Why is GST still charged on my employer health insurance after 22 September 2025?

The 22 September 2025 exemption applies to qualifying individual life and individual health policies. Employer-sponsored group health and group life policies remain taxable at 18%.

Does group term insurance have GST?

Yes. Employer-arranged group term cover is group life insurance for this purpose and remains subject to 18% GST under the stated government guidance.

What if my payslip shows only one insurance deduction?

Ask HR or the benefits administrator whether it is your employee share, the full premium, a tax-inclusive amount, or an allocation from a consolidated master-policy bill. Request the insurer invoice or a written breakdown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I calculate GST on a group premium?

Use the taxable premium shown on the insurer’s bill: taxable premium × 0.18. The tax-inclusive amount is taxable premium × 1.18. Do not apply 18% to an unexplained payroll deduction.

Can a group-policy invoice omit a member-level GST amount?

Yes. A master-policy invoice may show one consolidated premium and tax for the employer without allocating GST to each beneficiary. The employer or benefits administrator should explain how your share was calculated.

What should I do if the invoice has CGST and SGST or IGST?

Add the displayed tax components to find total GST, then compare that amount with the taxable premium and total payable. Keep the original tax split in your records.

Which date matters for an individual policy near 22 September 2025?

Review the supply, invoice, and payment events and any instalment schedule described in the Department of Financial Services FAQ. Qualifying individual-policy instalments paid before that date attract 18%; group-policy treatment remains 18%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if HR calls the policy individual but the certificate says master policy?

Ask the insurer to confirm the classification in writing. The policyholder, master-policy number, and scheme documents are more reliable than a payroll label.

Can the insurer’s invoice layout be different from another insurer’s?

Yes. Official guidance does not establish one universal invoice layout or require every member statement to use a field named “GST included.” Ask for the taxable base and tax amount when they are not shown.

The Bottom Line

For employer group health or group term insurance in India, verify the insurer’s taxable premium, add the stated 18% GST, and reconcile the total with your payroll allocation. If the bill is consolidated or the deduction is unexplained, obtain a written breakdown. The 22 September 2025 exemption is for qualifying individual policies, not employer-sponsored group cover.
