How to Check Whether Debt Advice Will Increase Your Total Repayment

By TheFinanceBase Team 12 min read

Compare the total amount you would pay from the same starting date—not just the proposed monthly payment. Add creditor payments, continuing interest and penalties, every adviser or account fee, payments on debts left outside the plan, and the time until completion. Treat interest freezes and creditor concessions as savings only after they are confirmed in writing.

Use total repayment as the test

A debt recommendation is cheaper only if the complete cash outlay to finish is lower on a like-for-like basis. The relevant total includes money reaching creditors, money retained by a counselling or administration service, interest and charges that continue, and payments you still have to make on excluded debts. A lower instalment can cost more when the term is longer or fees are deducted before creditors are paid.

Ask for the figures and assumptions in writing. You need to know which creditors have accepted the proposal, which interest or fee reductions are actually agreed, and what happens if an acceptance, payment or income assumption changes. The same method works when comparing a recommendation with your current arrangements or comparing two proposed solutions.

Build a baseline from your current debts

Start with the position on one stated date. Do not compare a new plan using today’s balances with an old schedule that began months earlier. Record each account separately, including accounts that an adviser says will not be included.

Record for every debt Why it matters
Current balance Shows the amount the proposed arrangement must address and lets you detect omitted accounts.
Required monthly payment Provides the cash-flow baseline and identifies payments that may continue outside a plan.
Interest rate and type Determines how quickly the balance grows if interest is not reduced or frozen.
Fees, penalties and arrears These can continue even when the headline payment falls.
Security or legal status Secured debts and debts in legal recovery may be treated differently from unsecured accounts.
Creditor and account reference Prevents a proposal from silently leaving out an account or assigning a payment to the wrong creditor.

Save recent statements and note the date of each balance. If an adviser supplies different balances, ask which date and transaction assumptions were used. The comparison should use the same debts and the same starting point for both options.

Request a written repayment schedule

A verbal promise about a “lower payment” is not enough to calculate cost. Request a schedule that shows:

  • the exact monthly amount you will pay;
  • the number of scheduled payments and the expected completion date;
  • the amount expected to reach each creditor;
  • all amounts retained by the provider before distribution;
  • the interest, late fees and other charges assumed for every account; and
  • what happens to any balance left when scheduled payments end.

If the schedule gives a range, ask what produces the high and low outcomes. A plan based on creditors accepting concessions has a different total from one based on those concessions merely being requested.

Count every fee and deduction

Ask for a line-by-line fee statement, not just a percentage or a monthly figure. Potential charges include setup, monthly administration, payment handling, membership, per-creditor and account fees. Ask whether each charge is one-time or recurring and whether it rises during the plan.

Cost to check Question to put in writing
Setup or enrollment fee What is the amount, when is it charged, and is it refundable if creditors reject the proposal?
Monthly administration fee How much is charged each month, for how many months, and does it change after a review?
Payment-handling fee Is a fee taken from each payment before the remaining money is sent to creditors?
Membership or account charge Is there a separate subscription or per-account charge in addition to the quoted monthly payment?
Per-creditor fee Is the charge multiplied by the number of accounts, and what happens if an account is added or removed?
Failure, cancellation or variation charge What will you owe if you miss a payment, change the plan, or leave before completion?

For each month, separate the amount leaving your bank account from the amount credited to debts. The difference is a real repayment cost even if the provider describes it as administration. Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency advises comparing agency fees with the interest savings expected from a debt-management plan; if fees exceed the expected savings, its guidance suggests seeking help elsewhere.

Verify interest and other concessions

For every debt, ask whether the creditor has agreed to reduce or freeze interest, late fees or other charges, when the change begins, and what could end it. A request sent by an adviser is not the same as an accepted concession. Keep the creditor’s written confirmation, including any conditions such as making every payment on time.

Use two totals when the outcome is uncertain:

  • Confirmed-case total: based only on reductions and freezes documented by the creditor.
  • No-concession or failure-case total: based on the account terms if the creditor refuses, delays or later withdraws the concession.

If the adviser provides only one total while relying on unconfirmed concessions, ask for a revised schedule that shows the difference. Interest can continue while a proposal is being considered, so the balance on the acceptance date may be higher than the balance used in the sales illustration.

Check debts that are outside the plan

List every payment you must continue separately and add it to the proposed plan payment for the same months. Canadian consumer guidance notes that debt-management plans may not cover secured debts and warns that excluded debts still require payment. Other jurisdictions and arrangements may exclude taxes, fines, student loans, mortgages, vehicle finance or debts already subject to legal orders. The exact list depends on local rules and the agreement.

Ask the adviser to mark each account as included, excluded or pending. For every excluded account, record its required payment, interest rate, end date and consequences of non-payment. An apparently affordable plan can become unaffordable when a mortgage, secured vehicle loan or other excluded bill is added back into the household budget.

Confirm creditor acceptance and what happens if the plan fails

Creditors may reject a proposed plan. Ask for the status of each creditor individually rather than accepting a statement that “the plan is being processed.” Find out:

  • which creditors have accepted and the date their acceptance took effect;
  • whether a creditor can continue collection calls, letters, enforcement or legal action while a proposal is pending;
  • what happens if one creditor refuses while others accept;
  • whether payments already made are returned, reallocated or kept as fees if the plan is cancelled; and
  • how a missed payment, income change or new arrears changes the schedule.

GOV.UK guidance on debt-management plans says creditors do not have to accept a proposed plan and may continue recovery activity. It also notes that setup and per-payment handling fees can apply. Do not count a creditor’s cooperation as a saving until you have confirmation of the terms.

Compare the total and the time side by side

Total expected cash paid = payments to creditors + interest and penalties that continue + all provider fees + payments on excluded debts.

Then record the number of months to completion. A lower monthly amount is not a saving if the term extends far enough for continuing interest and fees to outweigh the lower instalment.

Comparison field Current arrangement Proposed arrangement
Total paid to creditors Use the creditor schedules from the baseline date. Use the written distribution schedule, separating confirmed and assumed concessions.
Provider and account fees Include any existing account charges. Include setup, recurring, handling, membership and per-creditor charges.
Interest and penalties Use contractual rates and known arrears charges. Show what is frozen, what continues and what is only requested.
Excluded-debt payments Record separately, even if they are already in the household budget. Add every required payment outside the plan.
Monthly outlay Show the payment for each account and the total. Show the plan payment plus excluded-debt payments and any separate fees.
Completion date Use the expected final payment date. Use the scheduled end date and a later date if concessions are not obtained.
Acceptance and failure risk Note current collection or legal status. Note each creditor’s acceptance and the consequences of a missed payment or refusal.

Illustrative arithmetic

Suppose a written current schedule shows 30 payments totaling $8,100, while a proposed plan shows 48 payments of $170 ($8,160) plus $480 in administration and handling fees. The proposed monthly payment is lower, but the expected total is $8,640—$540 more—before adding any excluded debt or unconfirmed interest. This is only an illustration of the calculation; your comparison must use your own statements and the provider’s written schedule.

Compare the dimensions that a payment quote hides

Cost is essential, but it is not the only consequence that can change the decision. Use the same questions for every option.

Dimension What to establish
Total cash paid Payments to creditors and service providers through completion, under confirmed and failure-case assumptions.
Interest, penalties and fees Which charges continue, which are reduced or frozen, and the conditions for keeping a concession.
Term Monthly payment, number of payments and expected end date.
Debt coverage Accounts included, excluded and pending, including secured obligations.
Creditor response Acceptance status and whether collection or legal action can continue.
Missed-payment outcome Late fees, loss of concessions, plan cancellation, reallocation of funds and any remaining balance.
Personal consequences Credit reporting, assets, tax treatment and legal process identified by the official guidance for your jurisdiction.
Advice quality Authorization, independence, fee incentives and the alternatives considered.

No arrangement is universally cheapest. Creditor acceptance, debt type, interest terms, provider fees and local law can change the result.

Know what type of arrangement you are being offered

Credit counselling or a debt-management plan

In US guidance, a credit-counselling organization may help you budget, collect one payment and distribute it to creditors. It may charge fees, and the plan does not erase the debts. A plan can reduce interest or monthly payments, but compare the fees with the documented savings and check how long repayment will take.

Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency says debt-management plans generally require repayment of 100% of the debts. In some cases interest or fees may be reduced or eliminated, and some debts may not be covered. Ask for a written agreement, a payment-period estimate, a fee schedule and regular status reporting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the UK, GOV.UK says creditors do not have to accept a proposed debt-management plan. Setup and per-payment handling fees can apply, and creditors may retain recovery rights while the plan is being arranged or if it fails.

Debt settlement

Settlement is not the same as a debt-management plan. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance warns that settlement companies commonly encourage consumers to stop paying creditors while money accumulates. Interest, late fees and other charges can grow; collection activity and lawsuits may follow; and some creditors may refuse to negotiate. Charges on accounts that are not settled can consume the expected savings.

The CFPB states: “Debt settlement may well leave you deeper in debt than you were when you started.” The statement appears in its consumer guidance last modified September 9, 2025. Treat promises of guaranteed reductions, guaranteed settlement of every account or guaranteed protection from lawsuits as red flags, not as assumptions in your total.

In the United States, CFPB guidance also says settlement companies generally must meet specific conditions before charging a fee for a successful result. The legal conditions and complaint routes differ elsewhere, so verify the rules where you live.

Debt-consolidation loan

A consolidation loan replaces several accounts with one loan. It may simplify administration and may begin with a lower interest rate, but an introductory rate can expire and the new term may be longer. Compare the rate after any promotional period, the loan’s complete payment schedule, origination or account fees, and any charges on the debts being repaid.

CFPB guidance warns that after loan length, fees and other costs are included, you might pay more overall than under the original debts. Use the total of every scheduled loan payment plus every fee, not the teaser rate or the first-month payment.

Formal insolvency options

Formal procedures are highly location-specific and should be checked against current official guidance. The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s guidance updated September 22, 2026, describes costs and repayment terms for individual voluntary arrangements and Scottish trust deeds. It warns that failure can leave a borrower owing the balance plus interest and fees that had been frozen.

Canada’s Financial Consumer Agency directs people with serious financial problems toward licensed insolvency trustees for an assessment of consumer proposals and bankruptcy. Do not assume that a procedure’s name, eligibility test, asset treatment or discharge effect is the same in another country. Ask a locally authorized professional to explain the legal consequences before signing.

Questions to ask before enrolling

Take these questions to the adviser and request written answers:

  1. What exactly will you do, and what am I paying for?
  2. What is the total amount I am expected to pay through completion, including every fee?
  3. Which debts are included, which are excluded, and which are still pending?
  4. Have each of my creditors accepted the proposal? What happens if one refuses?
  5. Which interest rates, penalties or other charges will change, when will the change start, and what could end it?
  6. How long will repayment take, and why is that different from my current schedule?
  7. What happens if I miss a payment, lose income or need to change the amount?
  8. Can collection activity or legal action continue while the plan is considered or after a missed payment?
  9. What will happen to my credit report, assets and tax position under the rules where I live?
  10. How are you paid, and do employees receive more for enrolling me in a particular service?
  11. What free or lower-cost alternatives did you consider?

Consumer.gov specifically recommends asking a counsellor, “How much will I have to pay?” The Canadian agency’s comparison questions also cover the amount repaid, payment period, fees, missed-payment consequences, assets and credit-report effects.

Spot red flags and verify the adviser

  • Guaranteed write-off: No adviser can honestly guarantee that every creditor will accept a reduction.
  • Unsubstantiated government claim: Ask which government body authorizes the solution and check the claim independently.
  • Pressure to stop communicating with creditors: You need to know about notices, legal papers and changing balances.
  • Promise to stop all lawsuits: A service cannot guarantee how a creditor or court will act.
  • Missing alternatives: A recommendation that omits free counselling, direct negotiation or other applicable options is incomplete.
  • Unclear fee timing: Refusal to show what is deducted before creditors are paid makes the total impossible to verify.
  • No written acceptance: A requested concession should not be counted as agreed.
  • Unverifiable identity or authorization: Do not send money or personal documents until you confirm the firm through the relevant regulator.

For UK advice, use the Financial Conduct Authority’s Firm Checker and verify the firm’s identity and contact details. The FCA warns against being steered into a fee-charging solution without a proper explanation of alternatives. Other countries have different regulators and complaint routes; use the official consumer or financial-services authority for your location.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Freeze the starting point: Date your statements and list every balance, payment, rate, fee and arrear.
  2. Map coverage: Mark each debt included, excluded or awaiting a creditor decision.
  3. Obtain the schedule: Get the monthly amount, payment count, end date and creditor distribution in writing.
  4. Itemize deductions: Add setup, administration, handling, membership, per-creditor and account charges.
  5. Test concessions: Separate confirmed interest or fee reductions from requests and model the no-concession case.
  6. Add outside payments: Include secured and other excluded debts for the full duration.
  7. Check acceptance: Record each creditor’s response and the collection or legal consequences of refusal.
  8. Calculate two totals: Compare the expected total and a failure-case total, including the time to completion.
  9. Review consequences: Check credit reporting, assets, taxes, legal process and missed-payment rules under local guidance.
  10. Verify the adviser: Confirm authorization, fee incentives, identity and available free alternatives.
  11. Keep the file: Store statements, schedules, creditor letters, the signed agreement and every change notice.

When the numbers are still unclear

Pause enrollment if the provider cannot produce a complete schedule or will not identify excluded debts and fees. Ask for a second opinion from a free, independent or locally authorized service. You can also contact creditors directly to request current balances, hardship options and written interest terms, then rerun the comparison with those figures.

If your circumstances change, recalculate rather than assuming the original result still applies. A reduced income, new arrears, a lost concession or a creditor’s refusal can increase both the monthly amount needed and the final total.
