Why a bank description cannot prove a Social Security payment is real
A transaction label is created or transmitted through banking systems; it is not an authentication certificate from the Social Security Administration (SSA). The label may not explain why the payment arrived, whether the amount is correct, or whether someone changed your direct-deposit instructions. Official guidance does not provide one universal explanation for every unexpected deposit.
That is why the reliable path uses two independent checks: the bank identifies the posted transaction, and SSA confirms what the benefit record and payment instructions show. Treat a deposit as unresolved until both checks—or an SSA representative reviewing your record—explain it.

An unfamiliar amount can result from a payment you did not expect, a correction, a timing issue, or an account change. You should not diagnose the cause from the amount or description alone. A legitimate-looking entry can still be connected to an unauthorized direct-deposit change, while a genuine payment can appear unfamiliar because of posting or record timing.
The safe verification workflow
1. Check the transaction with your bank
- Use the bank’s ordinary customer-service number, secure app, or a branch you already know. Do not use a number in an unsolicited text, email, pop-up, or phone call.
- Ask what organization originated the entry, the settlement or posting date, the amount, and whether the credit is pending, reversed, or fully posted. Request the bank’s transaction or trace reference if one exists.
- Ask whether the bank sees a recent change to the account receiving federal benefits. The bank can explain its posting, but it cannot confirm that SSA intended the payment.
- Do not send the money elsewhere, withdraw it for a caller, or “return” it to an account supplied by someone who contacted you. Leave it untouched while the source is verified.
A bank may tell you that posting is delayed or that an entry is being corrected. Record the representative’s name, date, and case number so you can give SSA precise information.
Ask the bank to distinguish an actual posted credit from a pending entry, provisional credit, reversal, or correction. A pending item can change before settlement, so note its status when you call and check again later if the bank advises you to do so. Save a screenshot or statement showing the date, amount, and description, but redact account numbers before sharing it with anyone who has not been independently verified.
If the bank says the payment was sent to an account number or routing information that does not match your normal benefit destination, tell the bank that you did not authorize a change. Ask what account-security steps are available, then contact SSA. Do not let a caller who claims to be helping you direct those steps.
2. Open your personal my Social Security account yourself
- Type the Social Security Administration’s official web address into your browser yourself, or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not follow a link supplied in an unexpected message.
- Sign in to your personal my Social Security account using your normal credentials. If you do not have an account, reach SSA through an independently obtained official channel before creating one in response to a contact.
- Review the benefit-payment history, benefit type, payment dates, amounts, and the bank account or payment method listed for direct deposit.
- Look for a direct-deposit change, unfamiliar contact information, or other account activity. Save or print the details for your records, but do not alter them merely because a caller told you to.
SSA’s direct-deposit scam alert says to review and change direct-deposit information through the personal account and to contact SSA directly if a change may have occurred without permission. If the account shows a change you did not make, treat it as possible account takeover and follow the recovery steps below.
Compare the account’s payment date and amount with the bank’s posting details rather than relying on memory. Check whether the benefit type shown is the one you receive. If you see an unfamiliar mailing address, telephone number, email address, representative, or payment destination, write down exactly what appears and when you noticed it. Avoid making additional changes until SSA has reviewed the record unless SSA directs you to do so through a verified channel.
3. Ask SSA to reconcile the payment
Call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local office using contact information obtained independently. Tell the representative the posting date, amount, bank trace information, and what your account shows. Ask whether the payment is recorded on your benefit record and whether any notice, adjustment, or direct-deposit change is associated with it.

Have your notes ready: the bank’s transaction reference, the exact description, dates and amounts, screenshots of your account, and any letter or message you received. Explain whether the deposit is wholly unfamiliar, larger or smaller than expected, or associated with a change you did not authorize. Ask what you should do with the funds while the review is pending and request a case or confirmation number when one is available.
Do not rely on caller ID. A criminal can spoof a government number, and an authentic-looking letter or email can contain a fraudulent phone number. You initiated the contact; that distinction is important.
First identify which situation you have
| Situation | What to do first | What resolves it |
|---|---|---|
| Posted but unexplained deposit | Ask the bank to identify the entry, then ask SSA through an independently reached channel to match it to your benefit record. | SSA confirms the payment and its basis, or investigates an unrecognized payment or account change. |
| Expected payment is late or missing | Contact the bank first; posting may be delayed. | If the bank cannot resolve it, call SSA or a local office. SSA says it will review the case and replace a payment if it is due. |
| Overpayment notice or repayment demand | Verify that a real SSA notice exists by contacting SSA independently. Do not pay a caller or use a link they supplied. | The notice explains the reason and amount and gives repayment, appeal, and waiver options. |
These categories require different first steps. A posted but unexplained credit calls for identification and reconciliation. A missing payment calls for the bank’s posting investigation before SSA reviews the case. An overpayment allegation is a formal notice process, not permission for a stranger to collect money from you.
If the payment may be an SSA overpayment
SSA defines an overpayment as receiving more than was due. An official notice should identify the reason and amount and explain how to repay, appeal the decision, or request a waiver. The benefit program and the wording of your notice control; do not assume that a generic online explanation settles your case.

- Compare the notice with your benefit account and the payment information your bank provided.
- Call SSA through an independently obtained number to confirm that the notice exists and that its amount and case details match.
- Never pay a person who contacted you unexpectedly, and never use a repayment link sent in an unsolicited message.
A legitimate notice should give you enough information to identify the alleged overpayment, including the reason and amount. Preserve every page, envelope, attachment, and follow-up letter. If the notice conflicts with your account history, tell SSA exactly which date or amount does not match instead of guessing at a repayment figure.
Understand the response deadlines
In the process described by SSA, the agency waits at least 30 days after sending an overpayment notice before beginning collection. If you request a waiver or appeal within 30 days, collection is paused while SSA decides. Your specific notice and benefit program may contain controlling instructions, so read every page and contact SSA about your own case.
If you believe the amount or decision is wrong, SSA says to appeal. If repaying would be unaffordable or unfair and the error was not your fault, you may request a waiver. Keep copies of your request and proof of when SSA received it.

Do not ignore the notice while investigating whether a deposit was legitimate. Verification and an appeal or waiver request are separate actions, and the notice’s deadline still matters. Ask SSA how to submit the request and how to document timely delivery. Continue retaining statements that show what you actually received.

When an authentic notice includes a Remittance ID and online instructions, SSA identifies Pay.gov and bank online bill pay as repayment options and lists a phone option for repayment assistance. Confirm the notice with SSA before using any of those channels. A scammer can copy official wording and invent a Remittance ID.
Red flags that the contact—not the deposit—is the scam
An unexpected deposit can be a reason to check your records. It is not a reason to obey an unexpected caller. SSA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) warns that real employees will not unexpectedly ask for personal or bank details, threaten to seize an account or suspend a Social Security number, demand secrecy, or require gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, cash, or similar payment.
- Pressure or secrecy: The person says you must act immediately, stay on the phone, or tell no one.
- “Protect your money” instructions: You are told to transfer funds to a “safe” account, withdraw cash, buy cryptocurrency, or send a wire.
- Direct-deposit manipulation: You are told to change the bank account receiving benefits to claim a prize, unlock an account, or receive an increase.
- Unexpected identity demands: The contact asks for your Social Security number, password, one-time code, full bank details, or a photo of identification.
- Prize or fee claims: You are promised a contest award or higher benefits in exchange for information or a payment.
- Links and attachments: A message directs you to a sign-in page or asks you to open an attachment before you can verify the payment.
SSA OIG states: “Social Security and other government agencies will never help you transfer or move your money to protect it, and no legitimate bank employee needs you to stay on a call for hours or keep the call a secret.” (September 14, 2026.)
It also states: “No legitimate contest or prize requires you to redirect a federal benefit payment to claim it.” (September 9, 2026.) And: “The Social Security Administration will never offer to increase your benefits in exchange for information or for a fee.” (September 9, 2026.)
An SSA OIG alert dated November 12, 2025, quotes Acting Inspector General Michelle L. Anderson: “If you get an unexpected call, text, email, letter, or social media message from SSA OIG or any government agency, pause and think scam first.”
A caller may know your name, partial Social Security number, or the amount of a deposit. Those details do not prove the caller is from SSA; information can be obtained from stolen data or public records. End the contact and start over with the bank and SSA channels you choose yourself.

What to do if you already shared information or moved money
Stop the contact and secure access
- End the conversation. Do not answer follow-up calls or messages, and do not click additional links.
- If your my Social Security credentials were exposed, secure the account and create a new strong, unique password. Review direct-deposit and contact details for unauthorized changes.
- Contact your bank immediately through its official channel. Ask whether it can stop, recall, or monitor a transfer and place additional protections on the account.
- Change any other account password that was reused. Turn on multifactor authentication where available.
Tell the bank exactly what happened, including when you gave information, whether you approved a transfer, and which account details may be exposed. Keep the bank’s case number. If a one-time code or password was disclosed, say so explicitly so the bank can assess the risk to online access and transactions.
Report identity theft and fraud
SSA recovery guidance says to contact the credit bureaus about a fraud alert and report identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov. Follow the resulting recovery plan and keep the confirmation numbers. If money was stolen, contact local police and follow Federal Trade Commission recovery guidance.

Report a Social Security-related scam to SSA OIG. SSA’s fraud FAQ also provides an anonymous fraud hotline, fax, and mailing address. Use contact details obtained from an official SSA or OIG page, not from the suspected scammer.
Reporting does not replace securing your account or asking SSA to review a direct-deposit change. Complete those steps even if the scammer stopped responding or the bank reversed a transaction.
What the 2025 fraud statistic does—and does not—tell you
In a March 12, 2025 press release, SSA said approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change direct-deposit bank information. That is an agency statistic about reported direct-deposit fraud, not a probability that any individual unexpected deposit is fraudulent. It supports checking for unauthorized account changes; it does not identify the cause of your payment.
A practical decision checklist
- Have I asked my bank to identify the posting and confirmed whether it is pending, posted, or being reversed?
- Did I reach SSA by typing the official address myself or using an independently obtained phone number?
- Does my my Social Security account show the same payment, amount, date, and direct-deposit destination?
- Is there an official notice explaining an overpayment, including the reason, amount, and response choices?
- Has anyone asked me to move money, keep the call secret, provide a password or code, pay a fee, or redirect benefits?
- If information was exposed, have I secured the account, contacted the bank and credit bureaus, reported identity theft, and notified SSA OIG?
If the bank and SSA records agree, keep the confirmation for your files and monitor the next statements. If they do not agree, leave the funds untouched and continue through SSA’s official review rather than trying to resolve the discrepancy with the person who first contacted you.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I verify an unexpected deposit from the bank description alone?
No. The description is not an authentication certificate. Ask the bank to identify the origin, date, status, amount, and trace information, then ask SSA through an independently reached channel to match the payment to your benefit record.

What should I do if my expected Social Security payment is late?
Contact your bank first because electronic posting may be delayed. If the bank cannot resolve it, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, TTY 1-800-325-0778, or contact a local office. SSA says it will review the case and replace a payment if it is due.
Should I spend or return an unexpected credit?
Leave it untouched while it is investigated. Do not withdraw it, transfer it, or return it to an account supplied by a caller or message. Ask your bank and SSA what the payment represents and what action, if any, is required.
How can I tell whether an overpayment demand is real?
Contact SSA using a phone number or website address you obtained independently and ask whether an official notice exists. A genuine notice explains the reason and amount and gives repayment, appeal, and waiver options. Do not pay an unsolicited caller or use a link they supplied.

What if I already changed my direct deposit for someone who called?
Contact your bank immediately and ask about securing, monitoring, stopping, or recalling transactions. Secure your personal my Social Security account, create a new strong password if credentials were exposed, and ask SSA to review the direct-deposit change. Report identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov and report the Social Security-related scam to SSA OIG.
Can SSA ask me to move money to protect it?
No. SSA OIG says Social Security and other government agencies will never help you transfer or move money to protect it. Requests for secrecy, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wires, cash, passwords, or one-time codes are red flags.
Does the 40 percent direct-deposit fraud figure mean my deposit is probably fraudulent?
No. SSA’s March 12, 2025 figure describes reported direct-deposit fraud associated with calls to change bank information. It is not a probability for any individual deposit. Use it as a reason to inspect your direct-deposit details, not as a diagnosis.
Where do I report a Social Security scam?
Report it to SSA OIG using contact details from an official SSA or OIG page. If identity information was exposed, contact the credit bureaus about a fraud alert and report identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov. If money was stolen, contact local police and follow Federal Trade Commission recovery guidance.
