Select the exact service you are considering, confirm that the firm has permission for it, and compare the FCA record’s telephone number, email address, website and other contact details with those used by the adviser. A mismatch can indicate a clone scam, so stop and verify the firm through contact details shown by the FCA.
Do not rely on an “FCA regulated” badge, a firm name or an FCA Firm Reference Number (FRN) by itself. Authorisation is permission for particular regulated activities, not blanket approval of everything a business offers. The Financial Conduct Authority says that checking the right permissions is “the most effective and simplest way to reduce your risk.”

Why an FCA claim is not enough
Most UK firms providing financial services must be authorised or registered. Those words have different meanings. A firm can appear on an FCA record without being authorised to provide the investment, insurance, mortgage, pension or other service you are being offered.
The relevant question is not simply “Is this firm FCA regulated?” It is “Does this firm have current FCA permission for this particular service, and am I dealing with the genuine firm shown on the FCA record?” A legitimate firm can have several permissions, while another may be authorised for one activity but not the product being marketed to you.

An FCA record lowers risk but does not make an adviser risk-free. The FCA states that using an authorised firm with the correct permissions greatly reduces the risk of harm, but does not remove all risk. The Firm Checker also cannot guarantee that Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) or Financial Ombudsman Service protection will apply to your specific transaction.
How to check an online adviser: the exact process
1. Record the adviser’s claimed identity
Write down the firm’s legal name, trading name, website address, email domain, telephone number, postal address and any FRN supplied to you. Save the original email, social-media message or webpage as evidence.
Use the name shown in contracts or disclosures as well as the trading name. Do not treat an FRN supplied by the adviser as proof: a clone can copy a genuine firm’s name, address and FRN.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Open the genuine FCA Firm Checker
Navigate to the FCA’s own website independently rather than using a link sent by the adviser. Clone operators can imitate a firm and can also create lookalike websites. In the Firm Checker, search for the firm by name and select the financial product or service you are considering.
Read the result rather than stopping when a similar name appears. Confirm that the record identifies the same legal or trading entity and says it has permission for the service you want.
3. Check the permission for the precise service
Review the activities and products listed in the result. A firm authorised for one regulated activity may not be permitted to provide another. For example, a record that covers one type of advice does not automatically authorise investment management, arranging a mortgage or holding client money.
If the service you were offered is not clearly covered, pause. Ask the firm to explain the difference only after you have independently obtained its FCA contact details; do not let the adviser direct you to a page or number of its choice.
4. Match every contact detail
Compare the FCA-listed details with the channel through which you were approached:
- website domain and spelling;
- email address and domain;
- telephone number, including country and area codes;
- postal address; and
- the legal or trading name on documents.
A genuine firm may have more than one office or brand, but unexplained differences deserve verification. Do not accept a caller’s assertion that the FCA record is merely out of date. Call or email the firm using details displayed in the FCA record, not the details in the unsolicited message.
5. Look up an individual only as a supplementary check
The Financial Services Register can help you look up an individual adviser. However, not every person working for an authorised firm needs individual approval or appears on the Register. An individual’s absence is therefore not, by itself, proof that the firm is unauthorised or that the person is a fraud.

The FCA identifies checking the firm’s permission as the simplest and most effective first step. Use an individual search to clarify who is permitted to perform a role, not as a substitute for checking the firm and its activity.

Some advisers operate as appointed representatives (ARs) of a principal firm. An AR does not have unrestricted FCA permissions of its own. The principal agrees the AR’s activities and is responsible for that regulated business.
Ask the adviser for the principal’s name, then find the principal independently in the FCA records. Contact the principal through the FCA-listed details and ask it to confirm:
- that the adviser is currently its appointed representative;
- the exact activities the AR is permitted to carry out; and
- what protections and complaint routes apply to the service.
If the AR is operating outside the scope agreed by its principal, the protection available to a consumer may be affected.
7. Use the Financial Services Register for deeper or historic checks
The Financial Services Register is the FCA’s official public record. It provides detailed firm information, permissions, individual records and historic material such as fines. It can also establish whether a firm was authorised at the time you bought a service, which may matter in a complaint or compensation claim.

If a firm is marked “No longer authorised” or “Revoked,” the FCA says it can no longer carry out regulated financial activities. A historical authorisation does not make a firm currently authorised.
8. Search the FCA Warning List, but do not treat a blank result as clearance
The FCA Warning List contains firms the regulator knows or suspects may be operating without permission. A match is a serious warning to stop and investigate.
An absent firm is not cleared. The FCA expressly warns that a business may be unauthorised or a scam even if it has not yet appeared on the Warning List. Treat the list as an additional check, never as a complete register of every dangerous firm.
9. Stop and report when details do not line up
Do not send money, identity documents, passwords or remote-access details while a discrepancy is unresolved. If the firm cannot be found, the permission does not cover the service, or the contact details differ, contact the FCA using its official contact route and report suspected clone or unauthorised activity. Keep screenshots, emails, telephone numbers, payment details and documents.

Allow for record updates
FCA records are not a live guarantee of every change made that day. The FCA says Firm Checker information takes an average of 24 hours to update. That is an average, not a promise that a new permission, change of name or removal of authorisation will appear within exactly 24 hours. Check again immediately before signing up or sending money, particularly if the adviser says its status has just changed.

Record the date and time of your search, the result page and the contact details you compared. This creates a clear record of what you verified if the firm later changes its website, bank details, trading name or relationship with a principal.
Which FCA record should you use?
| Record or tool | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FCA Firm Checker | First check of a firm’s current permission for the exact product or service | It reduces risk but does not guarantee that a transaction is safe or covered by FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman Service. |
| Financial Services Register | Individual lookups, detailed permissions, historic status and regulatory information | Not every employee or representative needs individual approval or appears on the Register. |
| FCA Warning List | Checking whether the FCA has identified or warned about a suspected unauthorised firm | No listing does not prove authorisation or safety. |
Use the Firm Checker for the initial consumer decision, then move to the Register when you need detail about an individual, past authorisation or regulatory history. Use the Warning List as a warning signal, not as a whitelist.
How clone-firm scams defeat a superficial check
Clone firms impersonate genuine authorised businesses. They may copy the real firm’s name, office address, branding or FRN and then change one small detail, such as a telephone number. Other warning signs include a lookalike email domain, a free email account, a copied website with a slightly different address, or an unexpected approach by phone, email, newsletter or social media.
The decisive test is whether the contact details used to solicit you match the details in the FCA Firm Checker. Type the FCA website address yourself, inspect the spelling of the domain and use only contact information shown in the official result. If the person claims that the record is wrong or out of date, verify the claim through the FCA and the genuine firm’s independently sourced contact route.
A real FRN proves only that a number exists in the records; it does not prove that the person contacting you works for that firm. Never transfer money merely because the supplied FRN matches a genuine business.
Authorised, registered and appointed representative: the differences
Authorised firm
An authorised firm has FCA permission for specified regulated activities. Check that the permission is current and covers the service being offered. “Authorised” does not mean the FCA recommends the firm, guarantees returns or approves every product it sells.
Registered firm
Registration is a distinct status. Being registered does not authorise a business to provide regulated products or services that require authorisation. Read the status and permission fields rather than assuming that any FCA record is equivalent to authorisation.
Appointed representative
An AR carries out agreed activities on behalf of a principal. The principal sets the permitted scope and is responsible for that business. Confirm both the AR relationship and the scope with the principal before proceeding.
What the FCA check cannot tell you
FCA permission is a regulatory status check, not a promise about investment performance, fees, solvency or suitability. It does not by itself establish that FSCS compensation or Financial Ombudsman Service access will apply. Check the relevant protection directly for the product, firm and circumstances.
FCA information can change. The FCA says Firm Checker information takes an average of 24 hours to update; that is an average, not a guarantee that every change will appear within 24 hours. Recheck the record immediately before using a new adviser and again if the firm changes its name, website, account details or service.

What to do when the search produces an unexpected result
The firm does not appear
Stop the transaction. Check spelling and search the legal name as well as the trading name, but do not broaden the search until a similar firm appears and assume it is the same business. Contact the FCA if you still cannot find the firm.
Recommended Free Tools
The firm appears, but the service is missing
Do not proceed on the strength of a general “regulated” statement. Ask the firm to identify the permission that covers the service, then verify it yourself in the official record. If it cannot be confirmed, treat the offer as unauthorised.
The name and FRN match, but the phone or email does not
Assume a possible clone until independently resolved. End the conversation, use the FCA-listed contact details to reach the genuine firm, and report the suspected impersonation.
The record says “No longer authorised” or “Revoked”
The FCA says a firm with either status can no longer carry out regulated financial activities. Do not rely on old paperwork, a recently updated website or an explanation that authorisation is being renewed.
The adviser is an AR and the principal will not confirm the scope
Do not use the service. An AR’s permitted activities are agreed by its principal; refusal or inability to confirm them leaves you unable to establish the regulatory basis for the advice.
The firm is not on the Warning List
This is not clearance. Continue with the Firm Checker, permission and contact-detail checks. The Warning List is incomplete by design and can lag behind new scams.
A printable pre-payment checklist
- I recorded the adviser’s legal name, trading name, website, email, phone number and FRN.
- I searched the genuine FCA Firm Checker independently.
- The firm’s current status is appropriate, and its permission covers the exact service I am considering.
- The FCA-listed contact details match the details that approached me.
- If the adviser is an appointed representative, its principal confirmed the relationship and permitted scope.
- I used the Financial Services Register for any individual, historic or detailed check I needed.
- I searched the FCA Warning List but did not treat an absent result as proof of safety.
- I checked separately whether FSCS or Financial Ombudsman protection applies.
- I paused and contacted the FCA when a record was missing, disputed or inconsistent.
Only after all of these checks are consistent should you continue to the adviser’s suitability, fees, conflicts of interest and the risks of the proposed product. Regulatory authorisation is the identity-and-permission check that comes first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check an adviser’s FCA number?
Note the FRN, but search the firm by name in the FCA Firm Checker independently. Confirm that the FRN belongs to the same legal entity, that the permission covers the service and that the telephone, email, website and address match. A clone can quote a genuine firm’s FRN, so the number alone is never conclusive.
Is an online financial adviser FCA regulated?
There is no single yes-or-no answer based on a marketing badge. Check the exact firm and the specific service in the Firm Checker. A firm may be authorised for one activity but not another, or may be registered without authorisation for regulated products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes an adviser have to appear individually on the FCA Register?
No. Not everyone working for an authorised firm needs individual approval or appears on the Register. Check the firm’s permission first, then use an individual search only as supplementary information about a person’s role.

What is the difference between the Firm Checker and the Financial Services Register?
The Firm Checker is the practical first check of a current firm permission for a selected service. The Financial Services Register provides deeper detail, individual records, historic status and regulatory information such as fines. Use both when the circumstances require it.
Can I trust a firm that is absent from the FCA Warning List?
No. The Warning List contains firms the FCA knows or suspects may be unauthorised, but it is not a complete list. Absence does not establish authorisation or safety; verify the firm and its permission through the Firm Checker.
What should I do if the adviser says the FCA listing is out of date?
Do not rely on that explanation. Use the contact details displayed in the FCA record and contact the firm or the FCA independently. Pause payments and sharing documents until the discrepancy is resolved.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check an adviser’s FCA number?
Search the firm independently in the FCA Firm Checker, then match the FRN, legal entity, permission and official contact details. A copied FRN alone proves nothing.
Is an online financial adviser FCA regulated?
Check the exact firm and service in the Firm Checker. A general badge or registration does not establish authorisation for the product offered.
Does every adviser appear on the FCA Register?
No. Not every employee needs individual approval or appears there. Check the firm first and use an individual search only as a supplementary check.
What if the firm is not on the Warning List?
That is not clearance. The Warning List is incomplete, so verify current permission and contact details through the Firm Checker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if FCA contact details do not match?
Treat it as a possible clone. Stop, use the FCA-listed contact route to verify the firm, and report suspected impersonation.
The Bottom Line
Use the genuine FCA Firm Checker, select the exact service, verify current permission and match every contact detail. Check the principal if the adviser is an appointed representative, use the Financial Services Register for deeper or historic information, and remember that a blank Warning List search or matching FRN is not proof of safety. If anything does not line up, stop and contact the FCA independently.
