To check whether an NPS contribution was credited, open the CRA Transaction Statement for the correct PRAN, tier and date range, then verify the contribution amount and posting details. If the entry is missing after the applicable settlement window, trace the payment with the POP or your employer’s nodal office, and file a CRA grievance if necessary.
What “credited” means in an NPS account
An NPS contribution is credited when the Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) has matched the contribution information with the Trustee Bank’s fund receipt and posted the transaction to your PRAN. The primary evidence is the CRA Transaction Statement, not a bank-debit message alone and not a later investment value.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Once processed, the statement may show the contribution in a contribution or contribution/redemption section. The transaction section records the units allotted for processed contributions. Your account value can subsequently rise or fall with the applicable Net Asset Value (NAV), so a different balance does not by itself prove that the contribution was missed.
“Credited” also does not necessarily mean that the payment appears on the same calendar day that you initiated it. A bank confirmation proves that your payment instruction or salary deduction occurred. The CRA statement shows whether the contribution details and funds were matched and recorded against the intended PRAN and tier.

Information to have ready before you check
- Your 12-digit Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).
- The tier involved: Tier I or Tier II.
- The approximate payment date, amount and payment method.
- Your CRA login credentials, including the I-PIN where required.
- Your bank debit confirmation, salary slip, remittance advice or POP receipt.
- The contribution month or payroll period, if the payment came from an employer.
Use the CRA associated with your account. CRA portals and login hostnames can change, so use the current CRA site shown in your account paperwork or reached from the official CRA home page rather than relying on an old saved login address.
Have the original receipt or salary record open while checking. Matching the PRAN, tier, amount and date at the same time reduces the risk of treating another contribution or another account as the missing payment.
How to check whether an NPS contribution was credited online
1. Sign in to the CRA account for the right PRAN
- Open the current CRA subscriber login and sign in with your PRAN and I-PIN or the credentials requested on that portal.
- If you have more than one PRAN, confirm that you opened the account matching the payment. A contribution made under another PRAN will not appear in the statement you are viewing.
- For a payroll contribution, check the account connected to the employer or government service through which the deduction was made.
CRA guidance says subscribers can view statements online using the I-PIN. The NPS mobile app also provides account information and recent-contribution details. Some government subscribers can obtain information on the last contribution credited through the CRA’s IVR, but that facility is scoped to the government-subscriber service described by the CRA.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe app or IVR can be a quick first check, but the downloadable Transaction Statement is the stronger record for resolving a discrepancy because it gives the line item, date and units. If an app display and a statement appear inconsistent, save both results and ask the CRA to reconcile them.
2. Open the Transaction Statement
- Choose the menu item labelled “Statement of Transaction,” “Transaction Statement” or an equivalent statement option; labels can vary by CRA interface.
- Select the correct PRAN, tier and date range. If you are unsure of the posting date, start with a range covering the payment date and the following several working days.
- Generate or download the statement and retain the file with your payment evidence.
A statement covering only Tier I will not show a Tier II payment, and a narrow date range can hide a contribution posted later than the day you initiated payment. If the statement lets you filter by financial year or contribution period, choose a period broad enough to include any delayed posting.
3. Find and verify the contribution entry
Check the contribution or contribution/redemption section for an entry matching the payment. Confirm all of the following:
- Amount: the contribution amount expected after any permitted deductions or charges shown by the applicable channel.
- Posting or transaction date: the date the CRA recorded the transaction.
- Tier and account: Tier I or Tier II and the PRAN you intended to fund.
- Units: the units allotted in the transaction section, where the contribution has been processed.
For a payroll contribution, compare the statement amount with the amount shown on your salary slip or employer remittance record. For a direct payment, compare it with the bank debit, eNPS receipt or POP acknowledgement.

Check whether the statement contains more than one line for the same period. A duplicate-looking entry, an amount different from the receipt, or a contribution shown in the wrong tier is a statement discrepancy even if the total account value appears plausible.
4. Do not reject a valid entry because two dates differ
The transaction posting date and the NAV allotment date may be different. CRA statement guidance specifically cautions that they need not match. A contribution can therefore be correctly posted even when the units carry a later NAV date.
Likewise, do not use a particular rupee balance as the sole test. The value of units changes with NAV after allotment. The contribution or transaction record is the relevant evidence that the payment was credited.
How long an NPS contribution may take to appear
The general T+2 explanation
Protean’s CRA contribution FAQ states: “It takes T+2 days to get unit credited in subscriber account, wherein T being the date of fund receipt at Trustee bank.” In this explanation, T is not necessarily the day you clicked Pay or the day your bank account was debited. It is the date the Trustee Bank receives the funds.
Settlement also requires the CRA to have both the contribution details and the Trustee Bank’s receipt information. A POP may send the contribution file at a different time from the fund transfer, so the effective settlement clock begins only when the required information is available. Treat T+2 as the general settlement explanation for that CRA process, not as a promise measured from your initial payment instruction.
For example, a payment instruction on Monday does not establish that Monday is T if the intermediary or Trustee Bank received the funds later. Conversely, a later posting date is not automatically an error if the file and funds became matchable after the initial debit. Use the receipt, upload and remittance dates to establish what happened.
A government Tier II timing stated by the CRA
A separate CRA government-subscriber service FAQ says that a Tier II contribution paid by cash, cheque or demand draft through a POP-SP may take up to 15 working days for initial registration and up to 7 working days for a subsequent contribution. Those figures apply to the specific government-subscriber service described there; they are not a universal processing guarantee for every NPS contribution, payment method or subscriber sector.

In that service context, registered subscribers receive an SMS or email alert when the contribution is credited. Keep the alert, but still verify the transaction in the statement. If the stated period has passed, contact the office that handled the payment rather than assuming that a bank debit completed the CRA posting.

If the contribution is missing, identify the payment route
The right organisation to contact depends on who transmitted your contribution details and who handled the money. Use the route that matches your payment.
| Payment route | Who uploads or transmits details | What must be matched | First tracing contact | Useful evidence to request |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct contribution through a POP or POP-SP | The POP or POP-SP submits the subscriber contribution information. | Contribution details must match the Trustee Bank’s fund receipt. | The POP or POP-SP that accepted or processed the payment. | Receipt number, upload or transaction reference, submission date and confirmation that funds reached the Trustee Bank. |
| Government payroll contribution | The employer or government nodal office uploads the contribution file and transfers the money. | The CRA matches the file details with the Trustee Bank’s receipt record. | Your payroll office, employer or designated nodal office. | Payroll deduction record, file or batch reference, remittance date and confirmation of the PRAN and amount transmitted. |
| Other CRA-supported online route | The channel shown on your payment receipt and the associated POP or CRA process. | The payment receipt, submitted contribution details and Trustee Bank receipt must correspond. | The channel’s support contact or POP shown on the receipt. | Payment confirmation, transaction ID, date, amount and the PRAN entered at payment. |
The key distinction is whether an intermediary had to upload contribution details. A direct debit, receipt or salary deduction can exist without a successfully matched CRA file. Ask for evidence from both sides: the contribution submission and the fund remittance.
For a POP-routed contribution
- Give the POP your PRAN, tier, amount, payment date and receipt or bank reference.
- Ask whether the contribution details were uploaded to the CRA and request the upload or transaction reference.
- Ask the POP to confirm the date and amount remitted to the Trustee Bank, not merely the date your form was accepted.
- After the POP confirms submission, regenerate the CRA statement using a wider date range.
If the POP gives only a receipt number, ask whether it has a separate batch, upload or remittance reference. Those identifiers help the CRA determine whether the problem is a missing file, a missing fund receipt or a mismatch in the PRAN, tier or amount.
For a government payroll contribution
- Compare the salary slip with the CRA statement: PRAN, tier, contribution amount and deduction month should correspond.
- Ask the employer or nodal office whether your contribution was included in the uploaded file and remittance batch.
- Request the file or batch reference, upload date, remittance date and any rejection or validation message.
- Have the office verify that the PRAN was typed correctly and that the file amount agrees with the amount transferred.
A payroll deduction proves that money was withheld from salary; it does not by itself prove that the CRA received a correctly matched contribution file. The payroll or nodal office is therefore the first place to correct a wrong PRAN, omitted employee line or rejected batch.

Run a controlled recheck
- Search both Tier I and Tier II if the payment route allowed either tier.
- Expand the statement period to include the payment date and subsequent working days.
- Check for a contribution posted under a nearby date rather than the payment-instruction date.
- Confirm the amount against the receipt, salary record or bank debit.
- Check whether the payment was rejected, returned or left pending by the intermediary.
- Verify that you are checking the CRA account associated with the PRAN used on the receipt.
Do not make a second contribution solely to test the system. A duplicate payment can create a separate reconciliation problem. Do not discard a receipt because the statement is temporarily blank; the receipt, bank reference and intermediary response are needed to trace the payment.
File a CRA grievance or enquiry
- Use the grievance or enquiry option in the current CRA portal or the official CRA support channel linked from your account.
- Describe the payment route, PRAN, tier, amount, payment date, statement period searched and the intermediary’s response.
- Attach or quote the payment and receipt references requested by the CRA. Do not post your full PRAN or bank details in a public forum.
- Save the grievance token number immediately.
- Use the grievance-history or status function to monitor updates and retain each response.
- If the CRA indicates an escalation path to NPS Trust, follow that option with the token and the intermediary evidence.
The token is the link between your evidence and the CRA’s investigation. A grievance does not replace contacting the POP or nodal office; their file and remittance references may be needed for the CRA to match the transaction.

There is no single response deadline that applies to every CRA, subscriber sector and payment route. Avoid treating a grievance acknowledgement as proof that the contribution has already been credited, and continue checking the statement while the enquiry is open.

Protean’s non-government-sector statement notes say: “The contents of the Transaction Statement will be deemed to be correct and accepted by you unless you inform us of any error/ discrepancy within 30 days of receipt of the Transaction Statement.” That 30-day statement applies to the non-government guidance in which it appears; it should not be assumed to govern every subscriber sector or every CRA process.

Common situations and the appropriate response
My bank account was debited, but there is no CRA entry
Confirm the PRAN and tier used, then check whether the payment has reached the settlement stage. Obtain the POP or payment-channel reference and ask that channel to confirm both contribution-file submission and fund receipt. If the response does not resolve the mismatch, open a CRA grievance and include the bank reference.
The statement shows the contribution, but the balance looks lower
Verify the units and NAV date. Investment value changes with NAV, so a later balance is not a fixed representation of the amount originally contributed.
The posting date is later than my salary deduction date
This can occur because the employer or nodal office must upload a contribution file and transfer funds before the CRA can match both records. Compare the posting date with the file and remittance information rather than expecting it to equal the payroll deduction date.

I received an alert but cannot find the entry

The POP says it submitted the contribution, but the CRA cannot find it
Ask the POP for the upload or batch reference and the Trustee Bank remittance date. Provide those details to the CRA so it can investigate whether the contribution file, fund receipt or PRAN match failed.
Can I rely only on the mobile app or IVR?
Use them as additional checks, especially for a recent contribution or the last credited contribution where the government-subscriber IVR service is available. For a disputed amount or date, download the Transaction Statement and retain the receipt because those records show the details needed for tracing.
Keep a complete evidence trail
For each contribution you are checking, retain:
- The payment receipt or bank debit confirmation.
- The salary slip or employer remittance record for payroll contributions.
- The POP or payment-channel transaction reference.
- The CRA Transaction Statement showing the posted entry.
- Any SMS, email or IVR result indicating credit.
- The grievance token, history and responses.
Use a file name that includes the PRAN’s last four digits, tier, contribution month and statement date, but avoid storing an unprotected full PRAN in shared folders. This record lets the POP, nodal office and CRA compare the same amount, date and reference instead of reopening the investigation from scratch.

What is the quickest way to check whether my NPS contribution was credited?
Sign in to the current CRA account for the relevant PRAN, open the Statement of Transaction, select the correct tier and date range, and look for the contribution amount, posting date and units. The NPS mobile app may also show recent-contribution information.
Does the transaction posting date have to match the NAV allotment date?
No. CRA statement guidance says the transaction posting date and NAV allotment date may differ. Judge posting from the contribution or transaction record, not from a later rupee balance.
What does T+2 mean for an NPS contribution?
The Protean CRA contribution FAQ defines T as the date the Trustee Bank receives the funds. Its T+2 explanation is therefore not necessarily two days after your bank debit or payment instruction, and settlement also requires matching contribution details.
Who should I contact if a government salary contribution is missing?
Contact your employer, payroll office or designated government nodal office. Ask whether your PRAN and amount were included in the uploaded file and remittance batch, and request the file or batch reference.
Who should I contact for a direct POP contribution that is missing?
Contact the POP or POP-SP that accepted or processed the payment. Request the upload or transaction reference and the date and amount remitted to the Trustee Bank, then provide those details in a CRA enquiry if needed.
How quickly must I report a statement discrepancy?
Protean’s non-government-sector statement notes cite 30 days from receipt of the Transaction Statement. That wording is scoped to the non-government guidance in which it appears, so report errors promptly and do not assume the same deadline applies to every subscriber sector.
The Bottom Line
Open the CRA Transaction Statement for the correct PRAN, tier and period, and match the contribution amount, posting date and units to your receipt or payroll record. If it is absent, trace the file and funds through the POP or employer/nodal office, then file and track a CRA grievance with the token number. Remember that T+2 is measured from Trustee Bank fund receipt, not necessarily from your payment instruction.
