Use the Reserve Bank of India’s official list of registered non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and asset reconstruction companies (ARCs). Search the company’s exact legal name, then compare identifiers such as its Corporate Identification Number (CIN), address and full name with the documents you received. Check the separate list of cancelled Certificates of Registration (CoRs), and read the list’s “as at” date before relying on it.
If the company is asking you to place a deposit, perform a second check: RBI registration does not itself authorize public-deposit acceptance. Confirm that the exact company is on RBI’s permitted-deposit list and is not subject to a prohibition. For deposit-related checks or complaints, Sachet is another official route.

What “RBI-registered NBFC” actually means
An NBFC (non-banking financial company) generally needs a Certificate of Registration from the RBI to conduct business that falls within the NBFC regulatory framework. The certificate relates to a specific legal company, not to an app name, logo, website, group, agent or product brand.

Registration is also not a guarantee that the company is financially sound, will approve a loan, will repay money, or that every agent claiming to represent it is genuine. It is a regulatory-status check at a particular point in time. It does not certify service quality, pricing, collection conduct, data security or the likely return on an investment.
Get the identity right before searching
Find the legal name in primary documents
Take the exact legal name from the loan agreement, deposit form, account statement, receipt, sanction letter or official company document. Copy punctuation and suffixes such as “Limited,” “Private Limited” or “LLP” exactly. An app title, shortened name, logo or an agent’s spelling is not enough.
If you have only seen an advertisement or a message, ask for the full name of the lender or deposit-taking company before proceeding. A technology provider, broker or collection agency may contact you without being the regulated entity. The name that matters is the company legally responsible for the loan or deposit.

Collect identifiers that can distinguish similar companies
- Corporate Identification Number (CIN), if shown.
- Registered or corporate address.
- Company name, including its legal suffix.
- Name of the lender or deposit-taking company printed in the agreement.
- Bank-account name and beneficiary details supplied for payment.
Save a copy or screenshot of each document before searching. If any details conflict, pause the transaction. A matching logo, telephone number or domain name cannot cure a mismatch in the legal entity.
How to check the RBI register step by step
- Open RBI’s current NBFC page. Locate the downloadable or searchable list of registered NBFCs and ARCs. Do not rely on an old screenshot, a search-engine result, a social-media post or a third-party directory.
- Read the list date. The RBI listing page used for this guide identifies a register as at December 31, 2024. RBI may publish a newer file; before making a decision, open the live page and note the date printed on the newest downloadable list.
- Search the exact legal name. Use the document name, not the app or product name. If the file is a spreadsheet or PDF, use its built-in find function and try the exact spelling first. If the search returns no result, check whether punctuation, spacing or a legal suffix differs, but do not silently substitute a similar company.
- Compare the entry’s identifiers. Where the list provides them, compare the CIN, address and full company name with your documents. A similar name without matching identifiers is not a confirmed match.
- Check the cancelled-CoR list separately. Search the company there as well. An entry in a cancelled list means you must not treat an older registration as current.
- Record what you found. Save the list date, the company’s row, the document name you searched and any mismatch. This creates a useful record if you later need to complain or explain why you stopped a payment.
How to interpret the search result
| Result | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Exact legal name and identifiers match the current registered list | The company appears in RBI’s register for the date shown on that list. | If money is being placed as a deposit, perform the separate deposit-authorisation checks below. |
| Name appears only in the cancelled-CoR list | An earlier certificate should not be treated as current authorisation. | Do not send money until the current status is clarified directly through official channels. |
| No exact match | The search did not establish that the company is an RBI-registered NBFC. | Check whether an exemption or another regulator could apply; do not assume the offer is safe. |
| Only a similar name appears | Identity remains unresolved. | Obtain the legal entity and identifiers from the documents and stop until they match. |
| The app or agent name appears, but the contracting company does not | You have identified a brand or intermediary, not necessarily the lender. | Request the legal lender’s name and verify that entity instead. |
Registration and permission to accept deposits are different checks
A registered NBFC is not automatically permitted to accept public deposits. RBI directs depositors to check the separate list of NBFCs permitted to accept public deposits and to check whether a prohibition applies to the company.
Use three separate questions
| Question | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is this legal company in the NBFC register? | Registered NBFC/ARC list and its date. | Establishes the company’s registration status for that record. |
| May this company accept public deposits? | RBI’s current list of NBFCs permitted to accept public deposits. | Registration alone does not answer this question. |
| Is it prohibited from accepting deposits? | RBI’s applicable prohibition or related status information. | A prohibition overrides a sales representative’s assurance. |
Ask the company to identify the legal entity and the basis for its deposit-taking authority in writing. Treat vague statements such as “RBI approved,” “RBI verified” or “licensed lender” as incomplete until the exact company appears in the relevant official records. A receipt, certificate image or message supplied by a salesperson is not a substitute for checking RBI’s records yourself.

It also supports complaint filing and tracking for matters within its remit. Use the same exact legal name and identifiers there; a brand-only search can produce the wrong result.

Keep your documents and payment details available so the complaint describes the legal entity, not merely the app or marketing name.
Extra checks for loan apps and online lenders
Digital lending adds an identity problem: the app you install may not be the regulated lender. RBI’s consumer caution says to verify the antecedents of the firm offering loans through websites or mobile applications and not to share KYC documents with unidentified or unverified or unauthorised apps.
Match every layer of the transaction
| Layer | What should match |
|---|---|
| App or website | Displays the legal lender’s full name and a physical or registered address, not only a marketing brand. |
| Loan agreement | Names the same legal company that you found in RBI’s records, where RBI registration is required. |
| Repayment account | Names the same lender or an explicitly identified, authorised service arrangement; an unexplained personal account is a red flag. |
| Privacy and KYC requests | Explain why documents and permissions are needed and identify the responsible company. |
| Customer support | Can provide the lender’s legal identity and complaint route without directing you to an unrelated entity. |
A familiar app name, a copied RBI logo or a claim that “our partner is registered” does not establish which company is actually lending. The lender named in the agreement is the entity you must verify. If the app refuses to disclose that name, pressures you to pay before showing a contract, or asks for KYC copies while remaining unidentified, stop and do not continue merely because the interface looks professional.
What to verify before sharing KYC documents
- Identify the legal lender and compare it with the RBI entry where applicable.
- Read the agreement or application so you know which company will receive and use the documents.
- Check that payment instructions point to the identified lender or a clearly explained authorised arrangement.
- Do not send identity documents to an unidentified, unverified or unauthorised app.
- Keep screenshots of the app, website, messages and account details if the offer appears suspicious.
What to do when you cannot find the company
Do not treat absence as an automatic criminal finding
RBI’s NBFC FAQ describes registration as generally required but also identifies company types and activities that can be exempt under specified conditions. A company missing from the NBFC register may therefore be exempt or regulated under another framework. Identify what the entity actually does and which regulator governs that activity before drawing a conclusion.
The relevant question is not simply “Is this name absent?” It is “What legal entity is performing what activity, and which regulatory regime covers it?” An entity that is not an NBFC may still need authorization from a different regulator, while an exempt company may not appear in the NBFC list. That uncertainty is a reason to verify further, not a reason to accept an unexplained offer.

Do not treat absence as permission to proceed
An unverified identity is not a safe basis for sending a deposit, paying a “release fee,” signing a loan agreement or uploading KYC documents. Ask for the legal entity, regulator and authorisation in writing. If the explanation remains unclear, stop the transaction.
Do not let urgency change the standard. A limited-time rate, demand for an immediate transfer, or warning that an application will be cancelled does not make a missing registration or unresolved identity acceptable. Wait until the official records and your documents point to the same entity.
Escalate apparent unauthorised NBFC activity
- Keep the agreement, receipts, app screenshots, phone numbers, web addresses, payment instructions and bank details.
- Do not send additional money or provide more identity documents while the status is unresolved.
- Use Sachet where the matter concerns a deposit-seeking entity or another issue covered by its complaint process.
- Inform the nearest RBI Regional Office if a company appears to be carrying on NBFC business but does not appear in the authorised list.
- Report suspicious apps and associated bank-account information to law-enforcement authorities or through the available Sachet route, as advised by RBI.
Describe the conduct precisely: the legal name used, the name shown in the app, where money was requested, what documents were supplied and what the RBI searches showed. A clear chronology helps the receiving authority understand whether the issue concerns identity fraud, an apparent unauthorized NBFC activity, deposit solicitation or a different regulatory matter.

Common mistakes that produce false reassurance
Searching only the brand name
One legal company can operate several products, while an app can be marketed by a separate technology provider. Search the lender or deposit-taker named in the legal documents.
Accepting a similar spelling
“ABC Finance Limited,” “ABC Financial Services Private Limited” and “ABC Finance” may be different entities. Compare the CIN and address rather than selecting the closest-looking result.
Using an old list
Regulatory lists are point-in-time records. A company’s status can change, and the RBI page’s December 31, 2024 date is not a promise that no newer list exists. Always check the current file date.

Confusing an intermediary with the lender
A broker, collection agency, payment processor or app operator may not be the NBFC. The legal lender must be identified before you rely on its claimed authorisation.

Checking registration but not deposit permission
Finding a company in the registered list answers only the entity-registration question. It does not establish that the company may take public deposits. Complete the separate permission and prohibition checks whenever money is described as a deposit.
Assuming registration proves repayment or returns
The register does not assess your individual loan outcome, guarantee a deposit, confirm an agent’s conduct or establish that an investment will be profitable. Those are separate due-diligence questions.
Relying on a certificate image or logo
A document forwarded by an agent can be outdated, altered or associated with a different company. Confirm the status in the current RBI records and match the legal name and identifiers yourself.

- I have copied the exact legal name from a contract, receipt or application.
- I have checked RBI’s current registered NBFC/ARC list and noted its “as at” date.
- The name, CIN and address match, where those identifiers are available.
- I have searched RBI’s cancelled-CoR list.
- If money is described as a deposit, I have checked the separate permission-to-accept-deposits list and any prohibition.
- For an app, the app, agreement, payment account and named lender identify the same entity.
- I have not sent KYC documents to an unidentified or unverified app.
- I have saved the relevant list row, date and transaction documents.
- If the status remains unclear, I have paused payment and used the appropriate RBI, Sachet or law-enforcement reporting route.
The limits of this check
An RBI register search answers a narrow question: whether a particular legal entity appears in a regulatory record and, separately, whether it has the relevant permission to accept public deposits. It does not certify the company’s solvency, service quality, pricing, collection practices, data security or the authenticity of an agent.
The list is also a point-in-time record. A match to a file dated December 31, 2024 describes what that file records; it is not a guarantee that the status has remained unchanged. Conversely, a missing name may reflect an exemption or another regulatory framework rather than conclusive proof of illegal conduct. Use the current RBI page and the newest downloadable files, and preserve the exact file date and matching row so your conclusion is tied to the record you actually inspected.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is every RBI-registered NBFC allowed to take public deposits?
No. Registration and deposit-taking authority are separate. Check RBI’s current list of NBFCs permitted to accept public deposits and check whether a prohibition applies to the exact legal company.
What name should I search in RBI’s list?
Search the exact legal name printed in the loan agreement, deposit form, receipt or other primary document. Do not rely only on an app name, logo, shortened brand or agent’s spelling.
What if I find a similar company name?
A similar name is not a match. Compare the CIN, address and full legal name where available, and stop until the identifiers point to the same entity.
What does it mean if the company appears in the cancelled-CoR list?
Do not treat an earlier Certificate of Registration as current authorization. Clarify the company’s present status through current official records before sending money.
What if the company is not in RBI’s NBFC list?
Absence alone does not prove illegality because some company types or activities may be exempt or regulated under another framework. It also is not permission to proceed. Identify the activity and applicable regulator, and pause if the explanation is unclear.
How can I check a loan app’s claimed RBI connection?
Identify the lender named in the agreement, then match that legal entity to RBI’s records where registration is required. Also compare the app, website, payment account and customer-support details. Do not share KYC documents with an unidentified or unverified app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere can I complain about an apparent unauthorized deposit offer?
Sachet provides deposit-related checking, complaint filing and tracking within its remit. RBI guidance also says to inform the nearest RBI Regional Office when a company appears to be carrying on NBFC business but does not appear in the authorized list. Suspicious apps and associated bank-account information can be reported to law enforcement or through the available Sachet route.
The Bottom Line
Verify the exact legal entity—not merely the brand—in RBI’s current registered NBFC/ARC list, compare its identifiers, and search the cancelled-CoR list. If money is being solicited as a deposit, separately confirm permission to accept public deposits and the absence of a prohibition. For apps or unclear offers, pause payment, protect your KYC documents and use RBI, Sachet or law-enforcement reporting channels as appropriate.
