How to Check Whether an NBFC Deposit Is Covered by DICGC Insurance

No—an NBFC-mobilized deposit is not covered by DICGC deposit insurance. DICGC’s own guide places “Deposits mobilized by Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC)” under what is not covered. Regulation by the Reserve Bank of India, a fixed-deposit label, a credit rating, or a repayment promise does not turn an NBFC deposit into an insured bank deposit. You must first identify the legal institution holding your money and then verify whether it is an insured bank.

The practical check is straightforward: identify the legal entity, search its exact name in the DICGC list of insured banks, and ask a branch official directly if anything remains unclear. The list is for verifying banks; it does not create coverage for an NBFC deposit.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The short answer: NBFC deposits are outside DICGC insurance

DICGC explicitly excludes deposits mobilized by a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) from its deposit-insurance scheme. That means a deposit accepted by an NBFC does not receive the DICGC protection that may apply to an eligible deposit at an insured bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction is easy to miss because an NBFC may advertise a “fixed deposit,” operate under financial-sector regulation, use a familiar consumer brand, or promise a stated rate and maturity value. None of those descriptions establishes DICGC coverage. Insurance depends on the legal institution that owes you the deposit and, for bank deposits, whether that bank is covered by DICGC.

DICGC’s Guide to Deposit Insurance lists NBFC-mobilized deposits under “What’s Not covered?” The Reserve Bank of India’s FAQ on NBFC public deposits also frames NBFC oversight separately from the question of deposit insurance. Treat those as two different checks: an NBFC can be subject to regulation without its deposit being DICGC-insured.

What DICGC insurance actually covers

DICGC insurance applies to eligible deposits in an insured bank, subject to the statutory limit and aggregation rules. DICGC states that the maximum cover is ₹5,00,000 for a depositor in an insured bank, including both principal and interest, when held in the same right and capacity.

“Same right and capacity” describes the legal ownership in which the money is held. For example, deposits held by you individually are considered in one ownership capacity, while a genuinely different ownership capacity may be treated separately under the applicable rules. The ₹5 lakh figure is therefore not a universal allowance for every account number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deposits at different branches of the same bank are aggregated. If you hold ₹3,00,000 at one branch and ₹3,00,000 at another branch of the same insured bank in the same ownership capacity, the total considered for insurance is ₹6,00,000, not two separately insured amounts. The maximum payable cover for that depositor and capacity is ₹5,00,000, including principal and accrued interest.

DICGC’s FAQ states: “The deposits kept in different branches of a bank are aggregated for the purpose of insurance cover and a maximum amount of upto Rupees five lakhs is paid.” You can read the wording in the DICGC FAQ. The ₹5 lakh rule matters only after you have established that the institution is an insured bank and that the deposit is otherwise eligible. It does not extend insurance to an NBFC deposit.

Step 1: Identify the legal entity that owes you the money

Start with the name of the entity that is legally accepting your deposit, not the name of an app, product, group, or marketing brand. A financial group can operate more than one kind of institution, and a product page may not make the distinction prominent.

Where to find the legal name

  • Read the application form, deposit certificate, terms and conditions, and receipt. Look for the company’s full legal name and its designation as a bank or NBFC.
  • Check the “issuer,” “accepting institution,” or “depositor” field rather than relying on a logo or shortened trading name.
  • Note whether the document says “bank” or “Non-Banking Financial Company.” The words “company fixed deposit” or “NBFC deposit” indicate that the DICGC bank-insurance test is not satisfied.
  • If an intermediary collected your application, confirm which legal entity is responsible for repayment. The intermediary’s identity is not the same as the deposit-taking institution.

Do not infer status from a high interest rate, a familiar corporate group, an “AAA” or other credit rating, a registration reference, or a statement that the firm is regulated. Those facts may be relevant to a separate credit or liquidity assessment, but they do not establish DICGC insurance.

Why the legal name matters

DICGC’s insured-bank list is organized around insured banks. Searching only a product name can produce a false match or no match at all. A group may have a bank subsidiary and a separate NBFC; insurance status does not automatically transfer between them. The entity named on your deposit contract is the one whose status you must verify.

Step 2: Search DICGC’s official insured-bank list

Use DICGC’s List of Insured Banks and search for the exact legal name. The page showed a latest-update date of September 22, 2026 when checked. Because the list is time-sensitive, open the live page whenever you are making a current deposit decision rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party directory.

  1. Open the DICGC insured-bank list.
  2. Copy the full institution name from your deposit certificate or application and search the page for that name.
  3. Check that the result is the same legal entity, not a similarly named bank, parent company, subsidiary, or NBFC.
  4. Record the result and the date you checked it. Keep a copy of the deposit documents alongside your record.

A match on the list supports the conclusion that the named institution is an insured bank. It does not mean every financial product sold by a corporate group is insured. Confirm that your particular deposit is with the listed bank and that the ownership details are correct.

What a missing name means

If the exact legal name does not appear, do not assume that the deposit is insured because the firm is well known or because an employee said it was “under RBI.” A missing match may reflect a spelling difference or a change in institutional status, so seek clarification from the institution and DICGC’s current information. Until the identity and insured status are resolved, treat DICGC coverage as unconfirmed.

Step 3: Ask a branch official when there is any doubt

DICGC’s FAQ advises: “In case of doubt, depositor should make specific enquiry from the branch official in this regard.” The advice is directed at confirming whether the bank is insured, not at obtaining a general assurance that the product is safe.

Questions to ask

  • “What is the full legal name of the institution accepting this deposit?”
  • “Is this institution a bank or an NBFC?”
  • “Is this bank included in DICGC’s insured-bank list?”
  • “Is the specific deposit I am opening held by that insured bank?”
  • “How will principal and interest be counted under the ₹5 lakh limit for my ownership capacity?”

Ask for the answer in writing when practical, for example in an email or on an official letterhead. Retain the response with your application and certificate. A sales representative’s description of a product is not a substitute for identifying the legal institution and checking the official list.

How to handle an unclear answer

If staff use phrases such as “RBI-approved,” “government protected,” or “similar to a bank deposit” without answering whether the bank is insured by DICGC, ask the question again using the exact words “DICGC-insured bank.” If the institution cannot provide a clear legal name or status, pause the deposit decision until you can verify it independently.

NBFC deposit versus insured-bank deposit

The following comparison keeps the decision focused on the facts DICGC establishes.

Question NBFC-mobilized deposit Deposit at an insured bank
What is the legal institution? A Non-Banking Financial Company accepting the deposit. A bank that appears on DICGC’s insured-bank list.
DICGC status Not covered by DICGC, according to DICGC’s guide. Potentially covered if the deposit is eligible and the bank is insured.
How do you verify the institution? Identify the NBFC; the insured-bank list does not convert it into an insured bank. Search the exact legal name in DICGC’s current insured-bank list.
What if you remain uncertain? Do not treat uncertainty as coverage; obtain the institution’s legal status and assess the deposit separately. Ask a branch official specifically whether the bank is insured by DICGC.
Insurance limit, if applicable No DICGC cover merely because the NBFC offers a deposit. ₹5,00,000 maximum per depositor, per insured bank, including principal and interest, in the same right and capacity.
Accounts at different branches No DICGC aggregation rule creates coverage for the NBFC deposit. Deposits at different branches of the same bank are aggregated for the ₹5 lakh limit.

How the ₹5 lakh limit works at an insured bank

Principal and interest are combined

The limit includes both the amount you deposited and the interest due under the coverage rules. It is not ₹5,00,000 of principal plus an additional ₹5,00,000 of interest. If principal and accrued interest together exceed ₹5,00,000, the excess is outside the maximum insurance amount for that ownership capacity at that bank.

Branches do not create separate limits

Suppose you hold ₹2,75,000 at Branch A and ₹2,75,000 at Branch B of the same insured bank, both in your individual name. The deposits are aggregated to ₹5,50,000 before interest. The insured maximum remains ₹5,00,000, not ₹10,00,000.

Accounts are not automatically separate because they have different numbers

Opening several accounts in the same legal ownership capacity at one bank does not create a new ₹5 lakh cap for each account. The relevant comparison is the depositor, the bank, and the right and capacity in which the deposits are held.

Do not apply the bank limit to an NBFC

The ₹5 lakh figure is a bank-deposit insurance limit. It cannot be used to describe an NBFC deposit as “insured up to ₹5 lakh.” If the legal institution is an NBFC, the DICGC exclusion applies regardless of the amount deposited.

Common mistakes that lead to a wrong coverage assumption

Mistake: treating RBI regulation as deposit insurance

RBI oversight and DICGC insurance answer different questions. A statement that an NBFC is regulated does not establish that its deposits are insured by DICGC. Verify the institution’s category and use the DICGC bank list only for the bank-insurance question.

Mistake: checking only the brand name

A brand may not be the legal depositor. Compare the name on the contract with the name in the DICGC list. If they differ, ask which entity owes repayment and whether that entity is an insured bank.

Mistake: calling the limit “per account” or “per branch”

DICGC’s stated limit is per depositor, per insured bank, for deposits in the same right and capacity, with principal and interest included. Different branches of the same bank are aggregated.

Mistake: relying on a rating or promised return

A credit rating, a stated interest rate, a maturity promise, and a company’s reputation may affect your separate assessment of repayment risk. They do not appear in DICGC’s coverage test and do not replace verification of insured-bank status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: using an old list

Institutional lists can change. The DICGC list displayed September 22, 2026 as its update date when checked. Open the current page before committing funds and save the date of your check.

A practical verification checklist before you deposit

  • Legal entity: I have the full name of the institution named in the deposit documents.
  • Institution type: I know whether that entity is a bank or an NBFC.
  • Official list: If it is a bank, I searched the exact name in DICGC’s current insured-bank list.
  • Direct confirmation: I asked a branch official specifically about DICGC insurance if the result or wording was unclear.
  • Ownership capacity: I know how my existing deposits at that bank are held and whether they are in the same right and capacity.
  • Aggregation: I counted deposits at all branches of the same bank together.
  • Limit calculation: I included both principal and interest when considering the ₹5 lakh maximum.
  • NBFC distinction: I have not described an NBFC deposit as DICGC-insured merely because the company is regulated or offers a fixed deposit.

Worked examples

Example 1: A deposit certificate names an NBFC

Your certificate identifies a Non-Banking Financial Company as the accepting institution. The company has a regulated financial business and advertises a fixed maturity amount. Because DICGC expressly excludes NBFC-mobilized deposits, there is no DICGC cover for that deposit. The correct next step is not to apply the ₹5 lakh bank limit; it is to recognize that the DICGC insurance test does not apply in your favor.

Example 2: Two branches of one insured bank

You have ₹4,80,000 in a savings account at one branch and ₹20,000 in a term deposit at another branch of the same insured bank, both held individually. Before considering interest, the principal totals ₹5,00,000. Any interest that takes the combined amount above ₹5,00,000 is not covered by the maximum limit. The branch locations do not create separate caps.

Example 3: A group has both a bank and an NBFC

A financial group’s website displays a bank name and an NBFC name. Your application is for a product issued by the NBFC. Finding the group’s bank on DICGC’s list does not establish insurance for the NBFC product. Match the legal issuer on your application to the listed institution; if they are different, treat the NBFC deposit as excluded from DICGC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 4: The institution’s identity is unclear

The receipt uses a shortened brand name and does not clearly state whether a bank or NBFC accepted the funds. Do not infer the answer from the logo. Request the full legal name, check the DICGC list if it is a bank, and make the specific enquiry DICGC recommends with a branch official. Until those steps produce a clear answer, you cannot responsibly claim DICGC coverage.

What DICGC insurance does not tell you

Confirming that a bank is insured answers a narrow question: whether eligible deposits fall within DICGC’s protection and its statutory limit. It does not provide a complete evaluation of an institution’s liquidity, service quality, interest rate, tax treatment, lock-in terms, premature-withdrawal rules, or other product conditions. Those are separate matters that must be read in the deposit agreement and evaluated independently.

Likewise, the absence of DICGC coverage for an NBFC deposit is not a prediction of whether that company will repay. It is a statement about the insurance scheme: DICGC does not cover deposits mobilized by NBFCs. Keep the insurance determination separate from your broader assessment of return and repayment risk.

When to recheck your status

Recheck the institution and the DICGC list when opening a new deposit, renewing an existing deposit, moving money between products, or dealing with a change in the legal name shown on your documents. A previous check for one product or date should not be treated as proof for a different legal issuer or a later decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current decision, use the live insured-bank list, compare the exact name with your documents, and ask a branch official when in doubt. The DICGC FAQ and guide remain the primary references for the enquiry process, the NBFC exclusion, and the aggregation rules.

Bottom line for a prospective depositor

There is no DICGC-insurance check that can make an NBFC deposit insured: DICGC expressly excludes NBFC-mobilized deposits. The correct process is to identify the legal entity, distinguish an NBFC from a bank, verify a bank’s exact name on DICGC’s current insured-bank list, and obtain a specific confirmation from a branch official if anything is uncertain. Only after those steps establish an insured bank should you apply the ₹5,00,000 maximum for principal and interest, aggregated across branches in the same right and capacity.
