How to Check Whether an Investment Adviser or Broker Is Registered

Start with Investor.gov’s free Check Out Your Investment Professional search. Use it to find the person and the firm, then open the linked Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) or FINRA BrokerCheck report. Confirm the current registration status, jurisdiction and capacity being offered, and read the full disclosures. If nothing appears or the result is unclear, verify the spelling and identity, ask for registration details and contact the relevant state securities regulator before relying on the professional.

Why a registration check matters

A person may present as a financial adviser, investment adviser representative, broker, financial consultant or another title. The title alone does not tell you which regulated activity the person is offering. A firm can also have both investment-adviser and brokerage businesses, while an individual may work in both capacities. Checking only one database can therefore leave part of the record unexamined.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Registration records help you establish four facts before you share money or personal information: who the professional legally is, which firm they are associated with, what type of regulated activity they are registered to perform, and which regulator has jurisdiction. The reports can also show licensing, employment and disciplinary information. They are a verification step, not a substitute for understanding the services, fees, conflicts and risks described in the professional’s documents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This guidance is for U.S. investors. Database screens and report labels can change, and a professional’s status can change after you search, so note the date of your check. The official materials used for this process were reviewed on October 13, 2026.

Use the right official lookup

Investor.gov’s Check Out Your Investment Professional search is the best starting point because it routes you to the appropriate official record. The three resources serve different purposes.

Resource Best for What you can typically review
Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) Investment-adviser firms registered with the SEC, most state-registered adviser firms, and available records for investment adviser representatives Current registration and reporting status, jurisdictions, professional background, conduct information, current Form ADV filings, brochure and relationship-summary documents when available
FINRA BrokerCheck Brokerage firms and brokers Where a broker works, registrations and licenses, qualification exams, employment history, and reported criminal, regulatory, customer-complaint, arbitration, civil, financial or termination matters
State securities regulator A state-registered adviser, an unclear or missing record, or a question requiring state-level information Information that may supplement IAPD or BrokerCheck, including state registration details and regulator guidance

IAPD can direct you to BrokerCheck when a search involves brokerage activity. Follow that redirect rather than assuming the first result is the complete record.

What the lookup costs

Investor.gov, IAPD and BrokerCheck are official, public lookup resources available without a fee. State securities regulators also provide public contact and registration information. You do not need to buy a background-check service to perform this basic verification. If someone asks you to pay merely to confirm their registration, use the official sites yourself and ask why the request is necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before searching, gather identifying details

Ask the professional for information in writing. A legitimate professional should be able to identify the legal entity and the registration record connected with the services being offered.

  • The individual’s full legal name, including middle initial or suffix if used in regulatory records
  • The firm’s legal name and any name under which it does business
  • The individual’s firm affiliation and office location
  • A registration number or CRD number, if available
  • Whether the proposed relationship is investment advice, brokerage, or both

Names are not unique identifiers. A CRD number, employer, location and registration history help you distinguish the right person from someone with a similar name.

Step-by-step: verify an investment adviser

  1. Open Investor.gov’s Check Out Your Investment Professional search. Select the investment-adviser path to reach IAPD. You can also use IAPD directly when you already know that the person or firm offers investment advice.
  2. Search the individual and the firm separately. Start with the person’s full name, then repeat the search using the firm’s legal name. If a CRD number was supplied, search that as well. A firm record and an individual record answer different questions and should match the relationship the professional described.
  3. Confirm identity. Compare the result’s employer, office or state, registration history and other identifying information with what the professional told you. Do not treat a similar name as proof that you found the right person.
  4. Check the current status and jurisdiction. IAPD’s registration or reporting status is the key indication of whether an adviser record is active. Read the jurisdiction and any effective date shown. A historical entry is not the same as a current registration.
  5. Open the full firm report. Review the latest Form ADV filing, including the adviser brochure and the relationship summary when provided. The brochure describes the firm’s business practices, services, fees, conflicts and disciplinary information. The relationship summary presents services, costs, conflicts, standards of conduct and questions investors can ask.
  6. Read the individual’s record and disclosures. Check background and conduct information and compare it with statements the professional made. If a disclosure appears, open the underlying detail so you understand the event, date, allegation or finding and its resolution.
  7. Check the other capacity when relevant. If the person or firm also offers brokerage services, follow the BrokerCheck link or run a separate BrokerCheck search. Adviser and broker records are not interchangeable.

Step-by-step: verify a broker or brokerage firm

  1. Start at Investor.gov and follow the BrokerCheck path. You can search by a broker’s name, a firm’s name or a registration number.
  2. Run two searches. Search the individual broker and the brokerage firm separately. Confirm that the individual’s current employer and location match the person you are dealing with and that the firm name matches the documents or account application.
  3. Review registrations and licenses. Note the jurisdictions and registrations shown, as well as qualification examinations. A registration in one role or state does not automatically establish registration for every service or location.
  4. Read employment history. Look for the firms and dates listed and investigate unexplained differences between the report and the person’s biography.
  5. Open each reported disclosure. BrokerCheck may report criminal, regulatory, customer-complaint, arbitration, civil, financial or termination matters. Read the underlying explanation and outcome; a disclosure by itself does not provide the complete context.
  6. Check for adviser activity. If the broker also provides investment advice, use IAPD to inspect the adviser-side record and the firm’s Form ADV documents.

How to interpret the records

Current status is more important than a name match

A database can contain historical registrations, former employers and records for people with similar names. The useful question is not simply whether a name appears. It is whether the correct person or firm is currently registered or reporting in the jurisdiction where the proposed activity will occur. Record the status and effective date displayed on the report.

Jurisdiction determines where to follow up

Investment advisers may be regulated by the SEC or by state securities authorities. In general, smaller and mid-sized advisers are state regulated and larger advisers are SEC registered, but exceptions apply; do not use a simple asset-size threshold as a complete rule. An SEC-registered adviser’s individual representatives may still be registered with state securities authorities. The regulator shown in the record is the appropriate place to direct questions about that registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firm and individual records are different

The firm record describes the entity responsible for the advisory or brokerage business. The individual record describes the person’s registration, work history and disclosures. A clean firm record does not answer questions about an individual’s history, and an individual’s record does not describe all of a firm’s fees, conflicts or services.

Disclosures require context

Disclosures are reported events, not a one-line verdict about a person. Read the event description, dates, parties, allegations or findings and resolution. Consider whether the event is connected to the services you are being offered and ask the professional to explain anything you cannot understand. Keep the report and the explanation with your decision records.

Common pitfalls that can produce a misleading result

  • Searching only a brand name: A marketing name may differ from the legal entity filed with regulators. Use the legal firm name and the individual’s name.
  • Stopping at the first matching person: Confirm employer, location, registration history and jurisdiction before opening documents.
  • Checking only the firm: The firm’s record does not replace the individual’s background and disclosure record.
  • Checking only IAPD or only BrokerCheck: Advice and brokerage activity can coexist. Use both systems when the proposal involves both capacities.
  • Treating a past registration as current: Read the current status and effective date rather than relying on a historical listing.
  • Reading a disclosure headline without its detail: Open the underlying entry, including the allegation or finding and its resolution, before drawing a conclusion.
  • Assuming registration guarantees a recommendation: Registration verifies a regulatory status; it does not establish that a strategy is suitable, inexpensive or risk-free.
  • Ignoring a mismatch in paperwork: If the account application, agreement or Form ADV names a different entity, pause and ask which entity is providing the service.

Compare the two records when both roles are involved

When adviser and broker records are both relevant, use the same questions for each side of the relationship:

Comparison point What to verify
Role or capacity Whether the person is offering ongoing investment advice, securities transactions, or both
Registration and jurisdiction Whether the current status covers the service and location involved
Firm and individual Whether the legal entity, employer and person match across the records and your documents
Documents Whether the adviser’s Form ADV brochure and relationship summary describe what was proposed
Disclosures Whether reported events appear in either system and what their resolutions were
Costs and conflicts Whether fees, incentives and conflicts differ between the advisory and brokerage services

IAPD and BrokerCheck cover different roles and can cross-link. A result in one system should prompt you to inspect the other when the professional or firm operates in both capacities.

What to look for in an adviser’s Form ADV documents

The latest Form ADV brochure is the firm’s detailed description of its advisory business. Use it to compare what you were told with the firm’s filed information.

  • Services: Identify whether the firm offers the type of portfolio management or planning you are seeking and whether there are limitations.
  • Fees and expenses: Compare the fee description with the proposal or agreement you received. Note how charges are calculated and any other costs the brochure identifies.
  • Conflicts: Look for relationships, compensation arrangements or other incentives that could affect recommendations.
  • Standards and conduct: Read the firm’s description of its obligations and how it handles conflicts.
  • Disciplinary information: Review the firm’s disclosures and the related detail rather than relying on a summary.

The relationship summary is a shorter companion document. It is designed to explain services, costs, conflicts and conduct standards in a comparable format and includes questions to ask. Read both documents when available; the summary is not a replacement for the brochure.

What to look for in a BrokerCheck report

BrokerCheck is organized around a broker’s and brokerage firm’s registrations and history. Check the sections covering:

  • Current and former employers
  • Registrations, licenses and qualification examinations
  • States or jurisdictions in which registrations are shown
  • Criminal, regulatory, customer-complaint, arbitration, civil, financial and termination disclosures

Open the underlying disclosure for dates, allegations, findings, monetary amounts when reported and the resolution. Ask the broker for an explanation that addresses the specific entry. If the explanation conflicts with the report, pause the process and seek clarification from the firm or the relevant regulator.

When the person or firm appears in both systems

Dual registration is possible. A firm may operate as an investment adviser and a broker-dealer, and an individual may be associated with both sides. The capacity being offered determines which record matters:

If the proposal involves Primary record to inspect Additional check
Ongoing investment advice or portfolio management IAPD and the adviser firm’s Form ADV documents BrokerCheck if the person or firm also has brokerage activity
Securities transactions through a brokerage account BrokerCheck for the broker and firm IAPD if the broker or firm also provides investment advice
Both advice and transactions Both IAPD and BrokerCheck Compare the capacity, registrations, fees, conflicts and disclosures for each service

Do not assume that registration for one activity covers the other. Ask which entity will provide each service and which agreement governs it.

If your search returns no result

A missing result can have several explanations: the spelling may be wrong, the professional may use another legal name, the search may have matched the wrong type of record, or the person may not be registered. Treat the nonmatch as an unresolved issue, not as proof of compliance or misconduct.

  1. Check the spelling, middle initial, suffix and firm name. Search alternate legal or business names supplied by the professional.
  2. Repeat the search using the firm and individual separately, and try the CRD number if one was provided.
  3. Ask the professional to provide the exact registration details and identify the regulator responsible for the relationship.
  4. Compare the response with the proposed account documents, Form ADV materials or other written disclosures.
  5. Contact the relevant state securities regulator. State regulators may hold information in addition to IAPD or BrokerCheck and can clarify whether a state-registered adviser or representative appears in their records.
  6. Do not send investment funds or sensitive account information until the identity and registration question is resolved.

Questions to ask after the lookup

Use the records to make a focused follow-up list:

  • Which legal entity will sign my agreement and receive any fees?
  • Are you acting as an investment adviser, a broker, or in both capacities for this recommendation?
  • Which registration and jurisdiction cover the service I am being offered?
  • Can you explain every disclosure that appears on your report?
  • Where can I read the current Form ADV brochure and relationship summary, if you are offering advisory services?
  • Are the fees, conflicts and services in the written documents the same as those you described?

Written answers make it easier to compare the professional’s statements with the official record and to preserve a record of what you were told.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a dated record of your check

Save the search results, full reports, Form ADV documents, relationship summary and written answers. Record the date, the exact name searched, the firm, the jurisdiction and any status or effective date shown. Because records and professional status can change, a dated copy tells you what you actually reviewed when you made the decision. Recheck before opening an account or transferring assets if significant time has passed or the professional changes firms.

Bottom line

For a U.S. investment professional, begin with Investor.gov’s Check Out Your Investment Professional search, then inspect IAPD for adviser activity and BrokerCheck for brokerage activity. Search both the person and the firm, verify identity, current status and jurisdiction, read the complete reports and disclosures, and use the state securities regulator when the record is missing or unclear. Do not rely on a name appearing in a database; confirm that the registration covers the exact service being offered now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is checking an adviser or broker’s registration free?

Yes. Investor.gov, IAPD and FINRA BrokerCheck are official public lookup resources available without a fee. State securities regulators also provide registration information and contact channels.

Should I search the person, the firm, or both?

Search both separately. The individual record covers the person’s registrations, employment and disclosures, while the firm record covers the entity’s status, services, fees and conflicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I find the person in IAPD but not BrokerCheck?

That may reflect the capacity in which the person is registered. If brokerage services are being offered, search BrokerCheck separately and ask which entity and registration cover the proposed transactions.

Does a registration prove that an investment is safe or suitable?

No. Registration verifies a regulatory status and jurisdiction. You still need to evaluate services, fees, conflicts, risks and the disclosures in the firm’s documents.

What should I do if no result appears?

Check spelling and alternate legal names, search the individual and firm separately, try the CRD number, ask the professional for exact registration details, and contact the relevant state securities regulator. Do not send funds or sensitive information until the issue is resolved.

How should I interpret a disclosure on BrokerCheck or IAPD?

Open the full entry and read the dates, allegations or findings, parties and resolution. A disclosure is a reported event that requires context, not a complete conclusion about the person or firm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I repeat the check?

Statuses and affiliations can change. Save a dated copy and recheck before opening an account or transferring assets if time has passed or the professional changes firms.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
