Check the final ticket, receipt or tax invoice—not just the fare shown at booking. The document should identify the supplier and, where applicable, its GSTIN; describe the service; show the service value, GST rate and GST amount; and state the total charged. An electric vehicle does not have a separate, automatic GST rate. In India, the rate depends on the service arrangement and the conditions attached to that category.
Start with the final tax document
An app quote or rental headline is only a price display. It may combine the service charge, taxes, fees, discounts or deposits without identifying the GST component. After the ride or rental is complete, open the trip receipt, ticket or final invoice delivered by the platform or supplier.

For passenger transport, a ticket can serve as the tax invoice if it contains the required particulars. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) invoice rules state: “Where the supplier of taxable service is supplying passenger transportation service, a tax invoice shall include ticket in any form, by whatever name called.” See the CBIC Tax Invoice, Credit and Debit Notes — GST Invoice Rules for the complete conditions.

A taxi aggregator may issue the ticket or tax invoice after the trip rather than at booking. CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs describe issuance within one month from the supply of the service. Therefore, a missing tax line immediately after payment does not by itself prove that GST was omitted; first check whether a later document is due.

What a GST-inclusive ride or rental document should show
Use the invoice or ticket as your evidence of what was charged. The GST invoice rules list the core particulars below. A document can use different labels, but the information should be identifiable.
| What to find | Why it matters | Typical location |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier’s legal name and address | Shows which business made the supply; the app brand and the legal supplier may differ. | Invoice header or “sold by” section |
| GSTIN, where applicable | Identifies the registered supplier for GST purposes. | Header, supplier-details block or tax-information panel |
| Invoice or ticket number and date | Lets you match the document to the trip or rental and retain a dated record. | Top of the PDF, email or downloadable receipt |
| Description of service | Indicates whether the charge is passenger transport, a rental with an operator, or another arrangement. | Line-item description |
| Service value or taxable value | Shows the amount to which the stated rate has been applied. | Fare-breakdown table |
| GST rate and tax amount | Separates the tax from the underlying service value. | Tax columns, CGST/SGST or IGST lines |
| Total payable | Confirms the amount charged to your payment method. | “Grand total,” “amount paid” or similar line |
Section 33 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act requires the amount of tax to be prominently indicated in relevant tax documents. The Act also treats tax as part of the price at which the supply is made. In practical terms, a final total can include GST, but the document should still identify the tax amount where the rules require it.
How to check an EV taxi fare step by step
- Wait for the completed-trip document. Open the receipt or trip ticket sent by email, in the app’s ride history, or through the platform’s billing link. Keep the booking confirmation separately; it may not be the tax document.
- Match the trip. Confirm the date, pickup and drop-off details, vehicle or booking reference, and amount debited. This prevents you from analysing a quote, cancellation or pre-authorisation instead of the completed supply.
- Identify the supplier. Read the legal name and address, and locate the GSTIN if one is shown. The entity operating the platform, the vehicle operator and the entity issuing the invoice are not necessarily presented under the same consumer-facing name.
- Read the service description. Look for wording such as passenger transportation, cab service, ride service or another description. Do not classify the supply solely from the vehicle’s electric badge.
- Locate the value, rate and tax. Find the service or taxable value, then the GST rate and amount. Depending on the transaction, the tax may appear as CGST plus SGST, or as IGST, rather than one line labelled simply “GST.”
- Reconcile the arithmetic. Add the service value, stated GST and any separately identified non-tax amounts, then compare the result with the amount paid. Discounts, tolls, parking, cancellation charges or other line items can make the total differ from the base ride fare.
- Save the record. Download the PDF or screenshot the final document with its invoice number and date. Retain the payment record as a separate proof of what left your account.
If the platform has not supplied a final ticket or invoice, request it from the platform or the supplier shown in your booking. Ask for the tax amount and the service description rather than asking the support agent to confirm GST from the vehicle type alone.
How to check an EV car-rental invoice
- Use the final rental invoice. A reservation page can show an estimated or pre-tax amount. The closing invoice should cover the actual rental period and adjustments such as extensions, excess-distance charges, damage assessments, deposits released or fuel-related items.
- Determine whether an operator is supplied. Read the contract and invoice for “with driver,” “with operator” or equivalent language. A self-drive arrangement is not the same category as a rental of a passenger motor vehicle with an operator.
- Check what the price says about fuel. The CBIC rate entries distinguish arrangements in which fuel cost is included from other arrangements. An EV has no petrol or diesel line, but that does not eliminate the need to read how energy or operating costs are treated in the contract.
- Match the billed period and vehicle. Verify the rental dates, vehicle identifier, agreed daily or hourly basis, extra time and any add-ons. A tax line may apply to the complete rental supply rather than the advertised base rate.
- Inspect the supplier and tax fields. Confirm the supplier name, address, GSTIN where applicable, invoice number, service value, rate and tax amount. Compare the invoice total with the card, UPI or bank entry.
- Ask for clarification in writing. If the invoice only gives a grand total or uses an unclear “taxes and fees” label, request the final tax invoice or a written breakdown identifying the GST rate and amount.
Why “EV” does not determine the GST rate
GST classification follows the service supplied and its conditions, not merely the powertrain. The CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates schedule lists service categories and conditions that can apply to passenger transport and vehicle rentals. The cited entries do not create a special EV-only passenger-ride rate.

| CBIC-listed category | Rate shown in the schedule | Conditions or limits relevant to checking |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger transport by a motor vehicle where fuel cost is included | 5% total GST | Subject to the input-tax-credit condition stated in the schedule; confirm that the actual service fits this category. |
| Other passenger transport services | 18% total GST | A residual category in the schedule; the description and facts of the supply determine whether it applies. |
| Rental of a passenger motor vehicle with an operator where fuel cost is included | 5% total GST | Subject to the conditions stated in the schedule, including the operator and fuel-cost treatment. |
| Self-drive rental or another arrangement not covered by those descriptions | Not stated by the cited entries | The reviewed rate entries do not resolve every self-drive contract or platform structure; use the actual invoice and contract description. |
These percentages are legal rate entries, not a claim that every EV ride or rental is billed at that rate. Service type, whether an operator is supplied, how fuel or operating cost is treated, the supplier’s structure and other conditions can change the classification. Do not reverse-engineer a tax amount by dividing the total by 1.05 or 1.18 unless the invoice establishes that rate and the relevant value.
Included GST versus GST added at checkout
“GST included” and “GST added” describe how the consumer sees the price, but neither phrase replaces the tax details on the final document.
- Tax included in the displayed total: the amount you pay already contains the tax. The invoice should still indicate the GST amount where required, so you can distinguish the tax from the service value.
- Tax added separately: the app or rental desk first shows a service amount and then adds a GST line. The final amount payable should equal the service value plus the stated tax and any other disclosed charges.
- Only “taxes and fees” shown: this label is not enough to identify GST. Ask for the tax invoice or a breakdown naming GST, its rate and its amount.
- No tax line on the booking screen: do not treat that omission as proof that no GST was charged. The completed ticket or invoice is the document to inspect.
When comparing two prices, compare like with like: final amount payable, service description, operator or driver, treatment of fuel or operating cost, supplier identity and stated GST amount. A lower headline price may represent a different service category or exclude items shown only at settlement.

Example: app-based EV ride
An app shows ₹600 before you request a ride and later charges ₹642. The trip receipt identifies the supplier, lists a service value of ₹600, shows GST of ₹42 and gives a total of ₹642. The document establishes the stated tax amount and rate shown on that receipt. If the receipt instead says only “amount paid ₹642,” the total alone does not establish how much of it was GST.

Example: ride receipt issued later
You pay at the end of a trip but receive only a payment confirmation. The platform’s terms or support response says the ticket will be issued after processing. Check your ride history and email for the final document; CBIC’s sectoral FAQ describes a taxi aggregator issuing a ticket or tax invoice within one month from supply. Keep the payment confirmation until the ticket arrives.
Example: chauffeur-driven EV rental
A weekly invoice describes “passenger motor vehicle rental with operator,” identifies the supplier, shows the rental value, a 5% GST line and the total. That wording is consistent with the category listed by CBIC, but the category’s conditions still need to be satisfied by the actual contract. The vehicle being electric is not what establishes the rate.
Example: self-drive booking
A self-drive rental invoice lists a daily rental and a total but does not identify an operator. Do not apply the chauffeur-rental entry automatically. Ask the supplier to identify the GST classification and provide the tax amount; the cited rate entries do not settle every self-drive or platform arrangement.

The receipt shows a total but no GST amount
Download the full invoice rather than relying on the email preview or wallet notification. If the complete document still lacks a clear tax amount, contact the supplier or platform and request the final tax invoice with the GST rate, amount, supplier details and service value. Section 33 makes prominent indication of tax important in relevant tax documents.

The GSTIN is missing
Check whether you are viewing a provisional receipt, a payment confirmation or an invoice issued by a different entity. Ask which supplier made the supply and whether it is registered, then request the document applicable to that supply. Do not insert a GSTIN found on an unrelated website or an old invoice.
The rate seems inconsistent with the service
Compare the invoice wording with the actual arrangement: passenger ride, rental with operator, self-drive rental or another service; whether fuel or operating cost is included; and who supplied the vehicle or driver. Ask the issuer to explain the classification and conditions in writing. A consumer cannot establish the legally correct rate from “EV” alone.
The charged total does not match the receipt
Compare the payment timestamp and transaction reference, then check tolls, parking, waiting time, distance adjustments, cancellation fees, deposits and discounts. Request a corrected invoice or an explanation for any unexplained difference. Keep both the payment record and the issued document.
The platform and driver show different names
Use the legal supplier named on the final ticket or invoice for your tax records. The consumer-facing platform may arrange the ride while another entity appears as the supplier. If the document does not make that relationship clear, ask the issuer to identify who supplied the service and who collected the tax.

Questions to ask support or the rental desk
- “Please send the final tax invoice or passenger ticket for booking number [booking number].”
- “Which legal entity supplied this service, and what is its GSTIN, if applicable?”
- “What is the service value before GST, which GST rate was applied, and what is the GST amount?”
- “Does this invoice describe passenger transport, rental with an operator, self-drive rental or another service?”
- “Are tolls, parking, deposits, discounts or other charges included in the amount shown?”
Keep the request tied to one booking and one invoice number. That makes it easier to reconcile the answer with the amount actually paid.
India-specific scope and limits
This guidance is for transactions governed by India’s GST framework. GST rules vary by jurisdiction, so an EV ride or rental outside India requires that country’s tax documents and rates. Even in India, the cited CBIC schedules are category-level references; they do not confirm that a particular provider charged or remitted tax correctly.
No single percentage applies to every electric taxi, airport transfer, subscription rental, chauffeur hire or self-drive contract. The most reliable consumer evidence is the final document for the actual supply, read alongside the booking or rental terms. Where the document is incomplete, obtain an explanation from the supplier instead of guessing a rate from the vehicle type or from another company’s invoice.
