The reliable way to check is to open the ETF sponsor’s dated holdings file, then search the complete list for both company names and ticker symbols. Record the file’s as-of date with your result. For ETFs covered by SEC Rule 6c-11, the sponsor generally must publish portfolio holdings on its website each business day before regular trading opens, showing the portfolio as of the prior business-day close. SEC Form N-PORT filings are useful for a monthly regulatory cross-check, but they are not a replacement for the sponsor’s latest daily file when you need a current answer.
What counts as evidence that an ETF owns a sports gambling company?
A company is confirmed as an ETF holding only when it appears as a security in the fund’s dated portfolio disclosure. A mention in the fund’s name, investment objective, index methodology, marketing page, fact sheet, watchlist, or a list of eligible stocks is not proof that the company is in the current portfolio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
“Sports gambling company” is a practical grouping rather than a universal regulatory classification. Depending on the fund, relevant issuers may operate online sports betting, casino gaming, iGaming, fantasy sports, or a combination of businesses. Decide what you are checking before you search, and explain that scope in your notes.
- Direct evidence: a matching security in the sponsor’s holdings file, with an as-of date.
- Historical evidence: a matching position in a dated holdings schedule or SEC filing for the period you are investigating.
- Context only: an index constituent list, investment objective, theme description, or old fact sheet without confirmation in the relevant portfolio file.
The finding should always be time-bounded. “The ETF owns this company” is too broad unless you specify when the portfolio was measured. A careful statement is: “The holdings file dated [date] lists [security name and ticker] at [weight].” If there is no match, write: “I found no matching position in the holdings file dated [date].” That does not prove the fund has never owned the company or that it will not hold it later.

Step 1: Identify the exact ETF
Start with the fund’s full legal or marketed name and its ticker symbol. Similar names can refer to different ETFs, share classes, or products with different portfolios. Check the ticker shown on the sponsor’s official fund page and make sure it matches the exchange and jurisdiction relevant to you.
Record the identity before searching
- Full ETF name.
- Ticker symbol and, if shown, exchange.
- Fund sponsor or issuer.
- Whether you are checking the U.S.-listed product or another regional listing.
- The question you are answering, such as current ownership, ownership on a particular date, or exposure to a specific company.
Do not assume that two ETFs with similar labels share holdings. One may use a narrow sports-betting strategy, while another may hold a broad group of casinos, resorts, technology vendors, or entertainment companies.
Step 2: Open the sponsor’s dated holdings disclosure
Go to the sponsor’s official page for the exact fund. Look for a tab or link labeled Holdings, Portfolio, Portfolio holdings, or Download holdings. Sponsors commonly provide a spreadsheet, comma-separated file, PDF, or an on-page table.

Capture the as-of date
Before searching, find the portfolio date. It may be labeled “as of,” “portfolio date,” “effective date,” or “holdings as of.” Save the file or record the date in your notes. The date determines what your conclusion actually means; a page viewed today may still display a file from an earlier business day.
Use the complete file, not just the top holdings
Do not rely on a “top 10 holdings” widget or a marketing summary. A company can be a small position outside the displayed top holdings. Download the full list where possible, or expand the page until every security is visible.
For an ETF that follows SEC Rule 6c-11, the SEC’s disclosure guidance says website holdings should represent the portfolio at the close of the prior business day and be available each business day before regular trading opens. The disclosure can include the security identifier, description, quantity, and portfolio weight. That timing makes the dated sponsor file the most direct route for a current public check, while still leaving a one-business-day reporting lag.
Step 3: Search names and ticker symbols
Search the entire file for both the company’s name and its ticker. Use the file’s search function or your browser’s Find command. Searching only one spelling can miss a position because portfolio systems may use a legal name, an abbreviated issuer name, or a different share-class label.

- DraftKings and DKNG.
- Flutter Entertainment and any ticker displayed by the fund.
- MGM Resorts International and its ticker if you are including casino operators in your scope.
DraftKings’ SEC annual report identifies the company as a digital sports entertainment and gaming company and gives its Nasdaq ticker as DKNG. That makes “DraftKings” and “DKNG” sensible starting searches, not proof that any particular ETF currently owns the stock.
Search for variations
- Search a distinctive fragment such as “Draft” or “Flutter” if the full name returns nothing.
- Try the issuer’s ticker without punctuation and with punctuation if the file formats it differently.
- Check for legal suffixes such as “Inc.”, “ plc”, or “International.”
- Look for share-class labels, depositary receipts, or a security identifier when the portfolio lists them.
- Check whether the file separates common stock, warrants, options, or other instruments into different rows.
Do not count a similarly named supplier, parent company, preferred share, derivative, or cash position as the ordinary shares you intended to investigate unless your question includes those instruments. Record the exact security description so another reader can reproduce your result.
Step 4: Verify and record a match
When you find a candidate row, verify that it is the issuer you meant. Then capture enough detail to make the result auditable.

|---|---|---|
| ETF name and ticker | The exact fund identity | Prevents confusion with a similarly named ETF |
| Holdings-file as-of date | The date printed on the file or page | Limits the conclusion to a specific portfolio snapshot |
| Security name | The exact description shown | Confirms what instrument the fund reports |
| Ticker or identifier | Ticker, CUSIP, ISIN, or other identifier when supplied | Helps distinguish issuers and share classes |
| Portfolio weight | The reported percentage, if provided | Shows whether the position is material or very small |
| Quantity or value | The reported shares or market value, if provided | Adds a second check on the position |
Portfolio weights can change with market prices even when the number of shares is unchanged. Treat the percentage as the weight reported for that dated file, not as a permanent allocation or a recommendation.
How to write a positive finding
Use a sentence such as: “The ETF’s holdings file dated [date] lists [exact security name] ([ticker]) at [reported weight].” If the fund lists a different identifier or no weight, say so rather than filling in a value from another source.
How to write a negative finding
If your searches produce no matching row, write: “I found no matching position in the complete holdings file dated [date], after searching the relevant company names and tickers.” Add a qualification that holdings can change and issuer names or tickers can change. Do not turn a single dated absence into a claim that the ETF never owns the company.
Step 5: Use SEC Form N-PORT for historical or regulatory cross-checks
SEC Form N-PORT is a separate route from the sponsor’s daily website disclosure. It is used for monthly portfolio reporting by registered management investment companies and certain ETFs organized as unit investment trusts, subject to specified exclusions. The SEC publishes N-PORT datasets, and those datasets are updated quarterly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What N-PORT can answer
- Whether a fund reported a position for a particular filing period.
- What the fund disclosed in a historical monthly portfolio report.
- Whether a sponsor’s dated website file can be cross-checked against a regulatory record.
What N-PORT cannot answer by itself
- It is not a live intraday portfolio.
- It is not necessarily the latest position available on the sponsor’s website.
- A dataset update date is not the same as the portfolio’s measurement date.
When using N-PORT, identify both the reporting month and the filing date. A record filed later may describe an earlier month-end portfolio. Use the period represented in the filing when describing your result, rather than calling it current.

For an historical question—such as whether an ETF owned a company at the end of a particular quarter—match your question to a holdings schedule or N-PORT report covering that date. If the dates do not align, disclose the difference instead of presenting the records as an exact same-day comparison.
How Rule 6c-11 affects the timing of your answer
The SEC Division of Investment Management staff explained on January 19, 2024, that Rule 6c-11 requires ETFs to disclose portfolio holdings daily to facilitate the arbitrage mechanism that keeps ETF market prices near the fund’s net asset value. For a covered ETF, the website disclosure is generally based on the prior business-day close and must be available before regular trading opens on the next business day.
That rule creates a useful but limited expectation:
- Useful: you can normally obtain a dated public portfolio file each business day before the market opens.
- Limited: the file is not a real-time trade blotter, and it normally reflects the previous business-day close.
- Important: the exact availability and scope depend on whether the ETF is covered by the rule and on the sponsor’s disclosure practices.
A fund can trade after the disclosed close, rebalance, receive corporate-action adjustments, or change its portfolio before the next file is posted. Therefore, phrase a current check as “the latest posted holdings file shows…” and include its date.
Worked example: checking a sports-betting-themed ETF
Suppose you want to know whether a sports-betting-themed ETF holds DraftKings, Flutter Entertainment, or MGM Resorts International.
- Confirm the ETF’s full name and ticker on the sponsor’s fund page.
- Open the latest complete holdings file and note its as-of date.
- Search for “DraftKings” and “DKNG.”
- Search for “Flutter” and review any legal-name or share-class variation.
- Search for “MGM” and “MGM Resorts,” if casino operators are within your chosen definition.
- For every match, copy the exact security name, identifier, portfolio weight, and date.
- If there is no match, report the negative result only for that dated file.
A Roundhill Investments holdings schedule dated September 30, 2025, lists DraftKings, Flutter Entertainment, and MGM Resorts International among its holdings. That schedule is a dated example of why searching several names is useful. It does not establish that the ETF, or any other ETF, holds those securities today. A current claim requires the latest sponsor file available for the date of your check.
Comparing two or more ETFs
If you are comparing funds, use the same as-of date whenever possible. Otherwise, a position may appear different simply because one file is newer.

A repeatable checklist
- Write down the ETF’s exact name, ticker, exchange, and sponsor.
- Define what you mean by sports gambling company—for example, online sportsbook operators only, or also casino and iGaming companies.
- Open the sponsor’s official Holdings, Portfolio, or downloadable holdings page.
- Save or record the portfolio as-of date before searching.
- Use the complete list rather than a top-holdings widget.
- Search company names, ticker symbols, distinctive fragments, and identifiers.
- Verify each candidate row and exclude unrelated securities or instruments unless your question includes them.
- Record the exact security name, ticker or identifier, weight, quantity or value when supplied, and date.
- For historical questions, locate the matching dated schedule or N-PORT reporting period.
- Write a time-bounded conclusion that distinguishes an observed holding from a theme, index constituent, or old disclosure.
When the sponsor’s file is incomplete or unavailable
If the sponsor shows only a partial list, an undated table, or a broken download, do not present the result as a complete current check. Try the sponsor’s alternate portfolio format, such as an on-page table instead of a spreadsheet, and note what was unavailable. You can use a dated SEC filing as a historical cross-check, but make clear that it may not represent the latest portfolio.
If the file contains an unfamiliar identifier without a recognizable name, use the identifier to investigate within the sponsor’s own materials or the relevant SEC filing. Do not guess the issuer from a similar-looking abbreviation. If you cannot identify the row confidently, mark the result as unresolved rather than claiming a match.
What this method can—and cannot—tell you
This process can establish whether a named security appeared in a particular ETF portfolio disclosure, the reported weight at that snapshot, and the date represented. It can also help compare the actual breadth of exposure across funds and reconstruct historical ownership from dated records.
It cannot guarantee that the fund still owns the security after the file’s as-of date, predict the next rebalance, measure look-through exposure to a company held by another fund, or determine whether an investment is suitable for you. The result is a verification of disclosed holdings, not investment advice.
