Do not infer your paycheck from a national strike headline. First confirm whether your own UAW local and facility were called out, then ask payroll how your time will be coded, check your local’s strike-assistance instructions, and verify benefits and state-law consequences with the organizations that administer them. A dispute can affect you directly if you stop working, or indirectly if an employer, supplier, or customer cuts operations.
Start with your local, not the national headline
A UAW national dispute does not automatically mean every local, bargaining unit, shift, or facility is on strike. UAW says national leadership communicates through regional and local leadership, and that local leadership tells members if their local is called out. Its Stand Up guidance says, “Always follow the lead of your local leadership.”

Look for a dated message from your local president, bargaining committee, official text or email channel, workplace bulletin, or local meeting notice. Confirm four details:
- the name of the local or bargaining unit;
- the exact facility, department, or campus covered;
- the effective date and time, including whether particular shifts are included; and
- whether you have been instructed to withhold labor, report for work, perform assigned duties, or complete strike activity.
If you cannot find a current notice, contact the local directly before changing your schedule. A television report, social-media post, or message from another facility may describe a different bargaining unit.

Verify whether your unit was called out
Ask local union leadership whether your specific local and worksite are on strike, still working under an expired agreement, or operating under another labor-dispute instruction. Ask how the instruction applies to your shift and job classification.
-
Get the employer’s pay-status rule in writing
Ask payroll or human resources which status applies to you, when it begins, how missed time will be coded, and where the official schedule or pay notice is posted. Ask whether the employer distinguishes a strike absence, furlough, temporary layoff, reduced hours, paid leave, or an approved leave. Keep the response and your time records.
-
Separate wages already earned from future time
Check the last pay period you actually worked. Hours worked must be recorded and paid under the applicable wage law, collective-bargaining agreement, and employer pay cycle. Do not assume that a dispute changes the due date for work you already performed.

Ask the local about strike assistance
If your local called a strike, ask when and where you must apply, what identification or payroll records are required, how picket or committee assignments are tracked, and when payments are issued. The International UAW FAQ provides general rules, but the local sets the application date and time.
-
Confirm every benefit separately
Call the union benefits contact and the plan administrator. Ask about medical, prescription, dental, vision, hearing, sick-and-accident, life, disability, dependent coverage, premiums, COBRA or other continuation rights, and qualifying life events. Do not assume that continuation of one benefit means all benefits continue.

Check state and federal consequences
If you are not working, ask your state unemployment agency how it treats strike participation, lockouts, furloughs, and reduced hours. If a supplier or customer interruption threatens your job, ask the employer for written status and review the Department of Labor’s WARN guidance. For a missing paycheck, use the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division or your state labor department.
Which labor-dispute situation are you in?
| Situation | What it usually means for your paycheck | Who must confirm the detail |
|---|---|---|
| Your local is called out and you withhold labor | Regular wages generally stop for time not worked. A local-specific UAW Local 4121 ASE FAQ says employees who withhold labor during its described work stoppage are not eligible for regular pay. | Your employer’s payroll office and local union. The Local 4121 example concerns its university work-stoppage context and is not a universal rule for every UAW employer. |
| Your local is not called out and you continue working | Your normal pay practice may continue, although an expired agreement or operational changes can affect schedules, overtime, or other terms. | Payroll and local bargaining leadership. |
| You are furloughed or receive fewer hours | Non-exempt employees generally are not owed wages for hours they did not work. Exempt salaried employees are subject to salary-basis rules and limited exceptions. | Payroll, the collective agreement, the Department of Labor, and your state labor agency. |
| You are not a striker but your plant is disrupted by a supplier or customer strike | You may face reduced hours, furlough, or employment loss even though you did not withhold labor. | Employer for your status; Department of Labor WARN guidance and the state agency for notice and benefit questions. |
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidance from the Department of Labor distinguishes hours worked from hours not worked. It is general guidance, not a ruling on your contract, state law, or a particular strike.

A worker who stops working should not assume regular wages will continue. The immediate questions are whether the absence is authorized under the union’s instruction, how the employer records it, and whether any agreement provides a different payment or leave rule.
Hourly and other non-exempt employees
For a non-exempt employee, the FLSA generally requires pay for hours worked, not for hours missed because of a strike, furlough, or reduced schedule. A collective-bargaining agreement or state law can provide additional rights. Review the posted time record and compare it with your actual hours. If an employer fails to pay for work already performed, do not wait for strike assistance to resolve the issue.
Exempt salaried employees
Exempt employees are paid under salary-basis rules that can restrict deductions from a weekly salary. The Department of Labor recognizes limited exceptions, and a dispute-related closure or partial-week absence can have different consequences from a full-week absence. Ask payroll how the employer is applying the salary rule to your classification; do not assume the hourly rule applies to you.

Working under an expired agreement
An expired contract does not by itself answer whether you should report, what rate applies, or whether a work stoppage has begun. Follow the local’s current instruction and obtain the employer’s written pay and scheduling notice. Keep copies of schedules, timecards, pay stubs, and messages.
UAW strike assistance: amount, eligibility, and application
The current International UAW strike FAQ, accessed in 2026, states: “Weekly strike assistance is $500 per week ($100 per day, Mon-Fri).” It also says, “A member shall accumulate Strike Assistance credits effective on the first day of the strike.” Those are UAW’s stated program terms, not a guarantee that every worker in every dispute will qualify.
| Question | UAW’s stated guidance | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | $500 per week, or $100 per weekday from Monday through Friday. | Whether your dispute is covered and the payment method and schedule used by your local. |
| When credits begin | Credits accrue from the first day of the strike. | Your local’s official strike date and any local processing rules. |
| Good standing | The member must be in good standing the day before the strike. | Your membership status and any dues issue that could affect eligibility. |
| Payroll status at start | The member must be on active payroll when the strike starts. | How your employer classifies a layoff, leave, workers’ compensation, or sick-and-accident status. |
| Participation | The member must participate in strike activity, such as picket assignments or strike committees. | Your assignment, attendance method, permitted absences, and recordkeeping. |
| Application | Members apply at the date and time assigned by their local. | Location, documents, identification, and expected payment date. |
| Laid-off or benefit-status members | The FAQ says laid-off members and members receiving workers’ compensation or sick-and-accident benefits at the start are not eligible under its stated criteria. | Your exact status on the first strike day and any updated local interpretation. |
| Other gross pay | The FAQ says outside gross pay of $500 or more means the member will not receive weekly strike benefits, while medical and prescription assistance continues. | How the rule applies to your pay period, multiple jobs, and reporting documents. |
Ask the local before accepting a new job, changing a leave status, or missing an assigned duty. Those events may affect eligibility or the amount paid. Keep the application confirmation and every payment record.
Benefits may not all continue together
UAW describes its Strike and Defense Fund as covering medical and prescription benefits that mirror the contracted pre-strike plan. In the FAQ’s description, dental, vision, hearing, and sick-and-accident coverage are not covered. That distinction matters if you or a dependent has a prescription, dental procedure, vision appointment, hearing device, disability claim, or accident during the dispute.
Ask the plan administrator:
- the last date active coverage applies;
- whether the union fund pays the full premium or only a defined benefit;
- how dependents remain enrolled;
- whether COBRA or another continuation option is available and its election deadline;
- how claims incurred before and after the strike are handled; and
- what happens after a qualifying life event such as marriage, birth, adoption, or loss of other coverage.
Request written confirmation. A general statement that medical coverage continues does not establish dental, vision, hearing, life, disability, or accident coverage.

Unemployment, taxes, and garnishments
Unemployment
Eligibility depends on state law and the reason you are not working. UAW says participation in a strike disqualifies workers in many states, while a furlough, employer shutdown, reduced schedule, or indirect layoff can be analyzed differently. Apply or ask questions through your state unemployment agency and describe your status accurately: striking, locked out, furloughed, laid off, or still working reduced hours. Do not rely on another worker’s state or a social-media answer.
Taxes
UAW states that strike assistance is taxable. Its FAQ says the International reports $600 or more in weekly strike benefits received during a calendar year to the Internal Revenue Service on Form 1099-MISC. Treat the $600 threshold and reporting description as UAW’s guidance, not individualized tax advice. Save payment statements and consult a tax professional about withholding, estimated payments, and how your state treats the income.
Child support and other garnishments
The UAW FAQ also describes court-ordered garnishment from strike assistance. If you have a support order, tax levy, or other garnishment, ask the union how deductions are processed and contact the issuing agency before assuming the full stated amount will reach your bank account.
Indirect effects: when you are not on strike
A strike can interrupt materials, transportation, services, or orders. Your employer may reduce production even if your local did not authorize a strike. You may therefore see canceled shifts, a temporary furlough, a layoff, or a permanent employment loss without ever joining a picket line.

Its example includes a separate plant affected because a major supplier or customer is struck. WARN coverage depends on the employer, number of workers, length and type of employment loss, and statutory exceptions. Strike-related exemptions may apply, so do not assume every affected worker receives 60 days’ notice.

Ask your employer for a written statement identifying:
- whether the change is a schedule reduction, furlough, temporary layoff, or termination;
- the effective date and expected duration;
- whether health coverage and paid leave continue;
- how unemployment certification should describe the separation; and
- whether a WARN notice or exception is being relied on.
What to do if payday arrives and money is missing
First compare the pay stub with your time records and the employer’s pay calendar. Separate hours you worked from hours you did not work and identify any deduction you do not recognize. Ask payroll for a written explanation and keep the response.
If the regular payday for the last pay period you worked has passed and you have not been paid, the Department of Labor’s Last Paycheck guidance says to contact its Wage and Hour Division or your state labor department. Provide pay stubs, timecards, schedules, employment information, and your written payroll communications. A union grievance may also be available under your agreement; ask the local how to file it and whether a deadline applies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not treat a pending strike-assistance application as a substitute for wages owed for completed work. The two payments come from different administrators and address different questions.
A practical recordkeeping checklist
- Save the local’s strike notice, subsequent updates, and your assignment schedule.
- Download pay stubs, timecards, schedules, benefit statements, and leave balances before access to an employer portal changes.
- Write down the names, dates, and substance of calls with payroll, the local, the plan administrator, and government agencies.
- Keep strike-assistance applications, attendance confirmations, payment records, and any tax forms.
- Record the exact date your hours, coverage, or employment status changed.
- Use the same factual description of your status when speaking with payroll, the union, and an unemployment agency.
Bottom line for your own paycheck
Your answer depends on your local, facility, job classification, state, and the employer’s written action—not on the existence of a national UAW dispute. Confirm the local’s instruction, obtain payroll’s treatment of your hours, apply through the local if eligible, verify each benefit separately, and check unemployment, WARN, wage, and tax questions with the relevant government agency or professional.
