1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA federal student-loan forgiveness program fits only when your loan type, employer, employment schedule, repayment plan and payment history satisfy the same program’s rules. A public-service job or a long payment history by itself is not enough. The reliable way to check is to verify each requirement in your StudentAid.gov account, use the official PSLF Help Tool for your employer, and compare any teacher-specific option before changing loans or repayment plans.
Use the sequence below as a screening process, not as an approval decision. Federal Student Aid’s account records and current program instructions control the final determination, and eligibility rules can change.

Start with the five tests every forgiveness check needs
Before estimating a forgiveness date or deciding whether to consolidate, test these five conditions together:
- Loan: Is each loan an eligible federal loan, and is it in a status that permits qualifying payments?
- Employer: Does the organization itself qualify, based on its type and employer identification number (EIN)?
- Employment: Are you working full time in a qualifying arrangement for the required period?
- Repayment plan: Is the loan on a plan that can produce qualifying payments?
- Payment record: Do your individual monthly payments meet every applicable condition and appear in the official count?
For Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), Federal Student Aid describes qualifying government or nonprofit employment, full-time work, eligible loans, eligible repayment and 120 qualifying monthly payments as cumulative requirements. See the current PSLF requirements before relying on a checklist.

A “yes” to one test cannot cure a “no” to another. For example, qualifying work does not make an ineligible loan qualify, and an eligible Direct Loan does not earn PSLF credit while the employment or repayment conditions are missing.
Step 1: Identify every loan in your account
Sign in to StudentAid.gov and open your Dashboard or My Aid. Record the program name, current status and servicer for every loan, rather than checking only the account total. A borrower can have a mixture of loan programs, and one loan’s eligibility does not automatically transfer to another.
Direct Loans
PSLF generally requires a Direct Loan that is not in default. Confirm that the loan name in My Aid identifies a Direct Loan and review its status. If the account shows default, resolve that issue under current federal instructions before assuming new payments will qualify.
FFEL and Perkins Loans
Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) and Perkins loans are not themselves PSLF-eligible. Federal Student Aid says they may be consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan, but consolidation is a consequential decision: treatment of previously earned payment credit and other rules depend on timing and the applicable guidance. Read the current instructions before submitting a consolidation application, and keep a record of the balances and payment history you are evaluating. The PSLF Help Tool and the PSLF questions and answers provide the official starting points.
Make a loan inventory
Create one line for each loan with its type, outstanding principal, status, repayment plan and servicer. This inventory lets you see whether a proposed action affects all loans or only one. Do not use a servicer’s informal estimate as a substitute for the federal account record.

Step 2: Check the employer and the way you work
PSLF is an employer-based test. The specific job title or the public-serving nature of your work does not decide eligibility. Federal Student Aid’s Help Tool explains that qualifying employment is about who employs you, and its search uses the employer’s EIN. Start at the PSLF Help Tool, search the organization with the correct EIN, and save the result for your records.
Organizations that may qualify
Government employers and qualifying nonprofit organizations can meet the employer test. The organization’s legal identity and status matter, so do not assume that a contractor, grant recipient or similarly named entity has the same result as the government office or nonprofit it serves.

Qualifying employment requires full-time work under the program’s rules. Check your employment dates and hours with the employer before submitting a certification. If your schedule, employer or employment arrangement changed, treat each period separately when you document it.
Contractors and indirect public work
Contractors are generally not qualifying government employees, although the official FAQ describes limited circumstances that can produce a different result. If a staffing agency, consulting company or other intermediary pays you, search and certify the entity that is actually your employer, then review the exception language in the official PSLF FAQ. Performing services for a government agency is not, by itself, proof that the contractor qualifies.
Step 3: Verify the repayment plan and each monthly payment
A qualifying employer cannot turn every payment into PSLF credit. Your payment must be made under an eligible repayment plan while the other loan, employment and status conditions are satisfied.

Plans to examine
Federal Student Aid directs borrowers toward income-driven repayment (IDR) plans and the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan when evaluating PSLF. Plan availability and eligibility can change, so compare the options currently displayed for your loans and read the latest IDR plan FAQs. A plan name shown by a servicer is not enough; confirm that the plan is recognized for PSLF under current guidance.
The 120-payment requirement
PSLF requires 120 qualifying monthly payments. The 120 payments do not have to be consecutive, but a month counts only when the applicable loan, repayment plan, employment and payment conditions are all met. The threshold is a program requirement, not a promise that every borrower will finish after exactly ten calendar years.
Read the official payment count
Use your StudentAid.gov account to review the qualifying-payment count for each loan. Compare the count with your own employment and repayment records, and investigate any month marked ineligible instead of adding it to a personal spreadsheet as if it qualified. Federal Student Aid notes that periods involving an ineligible plan or certain deferment or forbearance statuses may fail review. The PSLF overview and PSLF FAQ explain the current treatment of payment scenarios.
Do not project a forgiveness date from a raw total
Take the official qualifying count, not the number of payments you remember making, and account for months that were excluded or are still under review. Recheck the count after an employment certification, a servicer transfer, a consolidation or a repayment-plan change. Before relying on a projected forgiveness date, confirm the current instructions in your account.
Step 4: Compare PSLF with Teacher Loan Forgiveness
Teachers should evaluate both programs against the same service history. The programs have different qualifying conditions and benefit structures, so the larger-looking benefit is not automatically the better choice.

| Comparison point | Public Service Loan Forgiveness | Teacher Loan Forgiveness |
|---|---|---|
| Loan eligibility | Generally eligible Direct Loans that are not in default; other federal loan types may require a qualifying consolidation. | Qualifying loans and borrower conditions must be checked under the current teacher-program rules. |
| Service requirement | Full-time employment for a qualifying government employer or nonprofit, verified through the employer process. | Qualifying teaching service and other program conditions; the current Federal Student Aid program page controls the details. |
| Qualifying duration | 120 qualifying monthly payments; payments need not be consecutive. | A five-year qualifying teaching service period is central to the comparison described by Federal Student Aid. |
| Benefit | Forgiveness after the required qualifying-payment threshold, subject to the remaining eligible balance and program rules. | Up to $17,500 for qualifying teaching and loans, according to Federal Student Aid’s current article; verify the amount and your borrower-specific conditions on the current program page. |
| Interaction with the other program | Payments from the same five-year teaching period used for Teacher Loan Forgiveness do not count toward PSLF after that service is forgiven under Teacher Loan Forgiveness. | You may be able to qualify for more than one program, but the same service period cannot provide duplicate payment credit after it has been used for Teacher Loan Forgiveness. |
| Repayment-plan question | Eligible repayment-plan rules, including IDR and the 10-year Standard Plan, apply. | Confirm the current repayment and loan rules for the teacher program before choosing it over a PSLF path. |
Federal Student Aid discusses the programs together in Student Loan Forgiveness and Other Ways the Government Can Help You Repay Your Loans. Because the programs can interact, write down which months and service years you would use for each application before submitting either one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: Use the PSLF Help Tool and create an audit trail
The official tool is the fastest way to test an employer and produce the appropriate form, but it does not replace your review of loan and payment records.
- Open the tool. Go to the PSLF Help Tool from StudentAid.gov and sign in when prompted.
- Gather exact employer information. Use the legal employer name, EIN, employment start and end dates, and your full-time status. Obtain the EIN from payroll or human resources rather than guessing from a public-facing brand name.
- Search the employer. Enter the EIN and review the result. If the organization is not returned as expected, verify the EIN and legal entity with the employer before treating the result as final.
- Generate the employment form. Follow the tool’s instructions to create the PSLF form for the relevant employment period, then have the employer’s authorized representative complete the certification.
- Submit and monitor. Send the completed form using the current submission instructions shown by Federal Student Aid or your servicer. Check that the employment period was accepted and that the account’s qualifying-payment count reflects it.
- Repeat at sensible checkpoints. Certify employment periodically and whenever you change qualifying employers. Keep copies of submitted forms, confirmations, pay records and correspondence.
- Pause before major changes. If you are considering consolidation, leaving an employer, switching plans or entering deferment or forbearance, check the current federal guidance first and save the account information that supports your decision.
How to read common situations
You work for a qualifying nonprofit but have FFEL loans
Your employer may pass the PSLF test while your loans do not. List the FFEL loans in My Aid, review whether a Direct Consolidation Loan is appropriate, and study the current consolidation and payment-credit rules before acting. Do not count nonprofit employment as proof that the existing FFEL loans are already eligible.
You work inside a government office through a contractor
Start with the entity that issues your paycheck and appears as your employer of record. Contractors generally do not qualify as government employees, although limited exceptions are described in the official FAQ. Submit an employer search only after confirming the legal entity and reviewing the applicable exception.

You are a teacher with several years of service
Separate your service into periods and compare the Teacher Loan Forgiveness conditions with the PSLF requirements. If you use a five-year teaching period for Teacher Loan Forgiveness, the payments from that same period cannot later supply PSLF credit after the teaching service has been forgiven under that program. A written timeline prevents you from assigning the same months to both benefits.

Your payments were interrupted
An interruption does not automatically disqualify you because PSLF payments need not be consecutive. The missing months still do not count unless they satisfy the applicable rules, and certain deferment or forbearance periods can be ineligible. Use the account’s month-by-month count and resolve errors through the current servicer and Federal Student Aid process.
Your employer changed names or merged
Keep the EIN, legal name and employment dates for each period. A rebrand does not necessarily create a new employer, while a merger or payroll transfer may. Ask human resources which legal entity employed you during each month and certify each period accurately.
Build a decision worksheet before you apply
Record the following information in one place and update it whenever your circumstances change:

- The legal employer name, EIN, employment start and end dates, and full-time schedule.
- Your repayment-plan name and the date each plan began.
- The official qualifying-payment count for each loan, including months marked ineligible or under review.
- Any consolidation, deferment, forbearance, employer change or plan change, with its effective date.
- For teaching service, the exact five-year period you would use for Teacher Loan Forgiveness and the months you would reserve for PSLF.
- Copies of Help Tool results, employer certifications, submissions, confirmations and account correspondence.
This record lets you explain a discrepancy with dates and documents instead of relying on memory. It also shows which requirement failed when a month or employer period is rejected.
When the answer is uncertain
Use Federal Student Aid’s current pages and your account when the facts are close to a boundary: a contractor exception, a nonprofit’s legal status, a loan consolidation, a plan transition, a deferment or forbearance period, or a disputed payment count. The official sources are the PSLF Help Tool, PSLF overview, PSLF questions and answers, program comparison article and IDR FAQs. Review them immediately before making a decision because repayment-plan availability and federal forgiveness rules are subject to change.
If all five tests line up and your account confirms the employment and payment periods, the program is a plausible fit to pursue. If one test fails, fix that specific issue or compare another program; do not assume that a broad public-service label or an estimated payment total will override it.
