A death cross is confirmed only in the limited sense that the shorter moving average has crossed below the longer one and subsequent trading has maintained a bearish pattern. The conventional event is the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) moving below the 200-day SMA. That crossing is an observable chart event, not proof that a durable decline will follow.
To assess it, first verify the exact averages and data used. Then examine later price action, the slopes and separation of the averages, volume, support and resistance, and the stock’s sector and overall market. Describe the result as bearish follow-through present or absent so far; do not treat the cross as a guaranteed sell signal or rely on a universal accuracy percentage.

What a death cross actually measures
A death cross compares two moving averages calculated from a stock’s daily closing prices. In the standard version, the 50-day SMA crosses from above to below the 200-day SMA. The 50-day line represents a shorter recent window; the 200-day line represents a much longer trend window. When the shorter line falls beneath the longer line, the chart records a death-cross event.
The name describes the relationship between the averages, not a forecast with a fixed outcome. A crossover can appear during a long decline, near the end of a decline, or during a choppy range in which the lines repeatedly change order. The same label can therefore describe very different market conditions.

Settings determine what signal you are checking
Before interpreting a chart, write down all of these settings:
- Average type: SMA or exponential moving average (EMA).
- Lookback periods: 50 and 200 sessions for the conventional example, or whatever alternative periods the chart specifies.
- Price field: normally daily closing prices, unless the chart explicitly uses another field.
- Time frame: daily bars for a 50/200-day interpretation.
- Adjustments: whether the data series is adjusted for splits or distributions and whether missing sessions are handled consistently.
An SMA gives every observation in its window equal weight. As a new close enters, the oldest close leaves and the average is recalculated. An EMA gives more weight to recent observations, so it generally turns sooner when prices change. A 50/200 EMA crossover is not the same signal as a 50/200 SMA crossover, even if both are called a death cross.
Why the crossover alone is not confirmation
Moving averages are calculated from past prices. They cannot turn down until weakness has already entered the data, and the 200-day average changes especially slowly because its window is long. This lag means the cross can occur after a substantial portion of a decline has already happened. It also means a sharp rebound can begin before the long average has had time to respond.

Its moving-average guidance also says a golden cross or death cross does not, by itself, tell an investor to buy or sell mechanically. StockCharts’ ChartSchool similarly notes that the two averages indicate general conditions, not a definitive uptrend or downtrend, and that crossover events can fail to follow through.
Consequently, there are two separate questions:
- Did the event occur? Did the specified shorter average move from above to below the specified longer average?
- Did the market validate the interpretation afterward? Did prices and the averages continue to behave bearishly rather than quickly reverse?
The first question can be answered on the crossover date. The second can only be assessed as subsequent evidence accumulates. No reviewed source establishes a universal number of closes, percentage gap, or volume level that converts every death cross into a confirmed trend.
Step-by-step: check a death cross on a chart
- Select the stock and daily chart. Use a chart that displays daily closing prices and enough history to show both moving-average windows. A 200-session average cannot be calculated meaningfully from only a few weeks of data.
- Open the indicator settings. Confirm whether each line is an SMA or EMA. Check the lookback values and the source price used by the platform. Do not assume that a line labeled “50” is an SMA or that a default setting matches the conventional definition.
- Identify the two average lines, not the price line. A death cross occurs when the 50-day line crosses the 200-day line. The stock price crossing below one of the averages is a different event and should not be substituted for the average-to-average crossover.
- Verify the direction of the crossing. Immediately before the event, the shorter average should be above the longer average. Afterward, it should be below it. Zoom in around the crossing date or inspect the platform’s data cursor so a visual touch is not mistaken for a completed move through the other line.
- Record the event date and settings. Note the date, average type, periods, and time frame. Two analysts can be looking at the same symbol and obtain different dates if one uses EMAs, weekly bars, or a different data adjustment.
- Review the sessions after the crossing. Observe whether the shorter average remains below the longer one, whether both lines slope downward or flatten, and whether price continues to trade weakly. A quick move back above the averages is evidence against treating the cross as durable.
- Inspect price structure. Look for lower highs and lower lows, failed rallies, breaks of established support, or an immediate recovery that invalidates the bearish reading. These observations add context; they are not a mandatory checklist with a guaranteed pass/fail score.
- Check volume and the broader market. Compare the volume on declines and rebounds with the stock’s own recent activity. Review the sector and a broad market index on the same time frame. A stock falling with its entire sector presents a different context from an isolated decline while the sector is advancing.
- Write a probabilistic conclusion. State whether the crossover occurred and whether bearish follow-through is present, weakening, or absent so far. Avoid wording that promises a future decline.
What counts as bearish follow-through?
Confirmation is not a single technical threshold. It is a pattern of behavior after the event. Evaluate each dimension separately instead of turning the cross into a binary trading command.

Price direction and structure
Persistent weakness after the cross is more consistent with a bearish interpretation than an immediate rebound. Examine whether closing prices continue to make lower highs and lower lows, whether rallies fail near prior support that has become resistance, and whether the stock can reclaim the moving averages. A single down day proves little; a sequence of price behavior is more informative.

A dramatic move can push the 50-day average below the 200-day average while leaving the stock vulnerable to a reflex rally. The chart should be read over the subsequent sessions rather than judged solely by the dramatic appearance of the crossover date.
Slope and separation of the averages
The order of the lines matters, but their slopes and distance provide additional context. If the 50-day average remains below the 200-day average and both averages point lower, the bearish condition is more persistent than if the lines are nearly flat and intertwined. A widening gap can indicate that recent prices are diverging from the longer trend; a narrowing gap warns that the relationship may be reversing.
Do not impose a universal percentage gap. The appropriate scale differs by stock price, volatility, sector and market regime, and the supplied technical guidance does not validate one minimum separation as a standard.
Volume behavior
Volume can help distinguish conviction from a thin move, but it is supporting evidence rather than a confirmation rule. StockCharts cautions that declines on low volume can weaken the bearish interpretation. Compare volume with the stock’s own recent baseline and note whether selling expands on breaks of support or dries up while price stabilizes.
A high-volume decline is not automatically bearish forever, and low volume is not automatically bullish. News, earnings, index rebalancing and other events can create unusual volume that needs separate explanation.

Support, resistance and volatility
Mark prior swing lows, congestion zones and other visible support levels. A death cross that occurs just as price reaches long-standing support has a different near-term risk profile from one that accompanies a clean break to new lows. Likewise, a volatile stock may cross its averages repeatedly without establishing a sustained trend.
Sector and broad-market context
Compare the stock with its sector and a broad market benchmark using the same bar interval and data conventions. A market-wide selloff can produce many death crosses together; an individual stock crossing while its sector remains strong may reflect company-specific weakness. Fidelity recommends using moving averages alongside other technical and fundamental information rather than in isolation.
How to recognize a false or failed signal
A “false signal” is a hindsight description for a crossover that does not lead to the expected sustained weakness. It does not mean the crossover was miscalculated. The event may have been real while the bearish interpretation failed.

Immediate reclaim of the averages
If price quickly rises back above the 50-day and 200-day averages, or the 50-day average turns back above the 200-day average, the initial bearish case has lost support. Record the reversal and its timing rather than continuing to treat the original cross as active indefinitely.
Flat, tangled lines
When both averages are flat and repeatedly intersect, the chart is signaling indecision or a range more than a clean long-term trend. Crossovers in such conditions are vulnerable to whipsaws: one move changes the line order, and a later move reverses it.
Weak price response to the cross
If the stock stops falling, forms higher lows, or rallies despite the cross, the event has not produced bearish follow-through. A decline on unusually low volume, especially if support holds, also deserves a less confident interpretation under StockCharts’ guidance.

Conflicting market evidence
A stock can post a death cross while its sector and broad market are advancing, or while fundamental news improves. Such conflict does not cancel the chart event, but it lowers the confidence that the crossover alone describes the stock’s next major move.

When two charts appear to disagree, compare their definitions before comparing their conclusions.
| Comparison axis | Why it changes the interpretation | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Average type | An SMA weights all observations equally; an EMA responds more to recent prices. | Are both lines SMAs, both EMAs, or a mixture? |
| Lookback periods | Different windows describe different horizons and produce different crossing dates. | Are the periods actually 50 and 200 sessions? |
| Bar interval | Daily, weekly and intraday bars generate distinct averages. | Are both charts using daily closing data? |
| Event versus follow-through | Line order on one date is not the same as later price behavior. | What happened in the sessions after the cross? |
| Market context | Volume, support, sector trends and broader conditions can reinforce or weaken the signal. | Does the surrounding evidence agree with the bearish reading? |
If any answer differs, the charts are not measuring the same signal. Calling one “confirmed” and the other “false” without first aligning these axes creates a comparison error.

Use enough history
The 200-day line depends on a rolling 200-session window. Starting a chart at the first available observation can produce an unstable early line or no meaningful long-term comparison. Load substantially more than 200 sessions so you can see how the averages behaved before the crossing.
Keep the data basis consistent
Use the same exchange sessions, closing-price convention and corporate-action treatment throughout the chart. A split-adjusted series and an unadjusted series can produce different historical prices and therefore different moving averages. If you are comparing two platforms, verify their settings rather than assuming their defaults match.

Check the timestamp
A crossover can appear during a trading session and disappear by the close. For a daily-close analysis, use completed daily bars and record the date assigned by the platform. Do not call an intraday touch a completed daily death cross.

Do not confuse recalculation with a new signal
Moving averages update whenever a new observation enters and the oldest observation leaves the window. Historical lines can therefore change slightly when a platform revises data or applies a different adjustment. Preserve a snapshot of the settings and date if you need an auditable record.
A practical reporting template
After checking the chart, summarize it in a way that separates facts from interpretation:
- Definition: “The 50-day SMA crossed below the 200-day SMA on [date]” only if those are the settings actually used.
- Price follow-through: Describe whether subsequent closes made lower lows, stabilized, or rebounded.
- Average behavior: State whether the lines remained in bearish order and whether their slopes and separation widened, narrowed or flattened.
- Volume: Note whether selling or rebounds occurred with higher or lower volume than the stock’s recent activity.
- Context: Identify relevant support, resistance, sector and broad-market conditions.
- Conclusion: Use “bearish follow-through is present,” “follow-through is mixed,” or “the crossover has not held” rather than “the stock will fall.”
This format makes clear what the chart has already shown and what remains uncertain. It also prevents a later observer from confusing the original event with the subsequent judgment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling any price move a death cross: the averages must cross each other; the price crossing an average is a separate signal.
- Ignoring the average type: a 50/200 SMA and a 50/200 EMA can cross on different dates.
- Using an unannounced time frame: a weekly crossover should not be described as a daily one.
- Treating the event date as a sell command: the crossover is lagging and probabilistic.
- Inventing a confirmation threshold: no validated universal number of closes, gap percentage or volume multiple is established here.
- Reading only the two lines: price structure, volume and market context can contradict an isolated moving-average signal.
- Claiming a universal win rate: the reviewed sources do not establish a current, stock-specific or all-market false-signal percentage.
- Overlooking reversals: a fast reclaim of the averages can make the initial bearish interpretation obsolete.
Using the signal responsibly
A death cross can organize chart review by highlighting a change in the relationship between a shorter and longer trend measure. It cannot determine position size, tax consequences, diversification needs, or whether an investor’s financial plan still fits. Those decisions require information outside the crossover, including fundamental conditions, valuation, liquidity, risk tolerance and time horizon.
Because the indicator is reactive, waiting for the cross may also mean accepting that some price movement has already occurred. Acting before it appears introduces a different risk: anticipating a cross that never completes. Neither choice creates certainty. The disciplined approach is to define the signal precisely, observe what happens afterward, and keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence.
What “confirmed” should mean in plain language
For this indicator, “confirmed” should be a time-qualified description, not a promise. You can say: “The specified 50-day SMA crossed below the 200-day SMA, and subsequent sessions have so far maintained bearish price and average behavior.” You can also say: “The crossover occurred, but price rebounded and the averages are converging, so bearish follow-through is not established.” Both statements preserve the distinction between an observed event and an uncertain future.
