A fund-manager change is a prompt to review your mutual fund, not an automatic sell signal. First verify who changed, the effective date and which part of the scheme the person manages. Then compare the scheme’s objective, category, asset-allocation framework, benchmark, portfolio, risk measures and performance with earlier disclosures. Judge results against the stated benchmark and over matching periods, and make any keep, switch or redeem decision according to your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, costs and tax position. If you need a personal recommendation, consult a SEBI-registered investment adviser.
What a fund-manager change actually tells you
The headline establishes only a personnel change. It does not, by itself, establish that the scheme’s investment objective, category, benchmark, portfolio or risk level has changed. An asset-management company may assign different managers to separate sleeves, such as equity and debt, so the relevant question is not simply whether the named manager changed, but which assets and decisions fall under that person’s responsibility.

Treat the announcement as a date-stamped event. Your review should distinguish the last disclosure before the change from the first disclosure after it. A manager’s appointment may be effective on a date different from the announcement date, and the current factsheet may be published weeks later. Record both dates rather than assuming the publication date is the date management changed.
There is no established manager-change statistic that can tell you how much a scheme’s return will rise or fall. Market direction, sector exposure, interest-rate moves, credit conditions, cash levels and other portfolio decisions can affect returns at the same time. A before-and-after review can identify what changed; it cannot prove that one person caused every subsequent gain or loss.

Step 1: Verify the change from the AMC’s own documents
- Find the announcement or addendum. Use the asset-management company’s investor or scheme-document page and download the notice that names the outgoing and incoming manager. Prefer the document issued by the AMC over a headline or social-media summary.
- Write down the effective date. Note the date on which the appointment or resignation takes effect. If the notice gives an announcement date as well, keep both dates in your worksheet.
- Record each person’s disclosed responsibility. A manager may be responsible for the whole scheme, only the equity allocation, only the debt allocation, or a specific strategy within a broader product. Do not apply a debt-manager change to the equity sleeve, or vice versa.
- Check whether there is an addendum to the scheme documents. Read the stated changes and the effective date. An addendum may alter disclosures beyond the manager’s name, but the notice itself must identify what was amended.
Keep a PDF or saved copy of every document you use. Factsheets are replaced periodically, so a later version may no longer show the exact portfolio or manager tenure that applied on your comparison date.
Step 2: Gather the right versions of the factsheet and SID
AMFI’s guide to tracking investments with a mutual-fund fact sheet explains that a factsheet typically includes the manager’s name and experience, the scheme objective, benchmark, portfolio, risk measures and returns. The scheme information document, or SID, is the more detailed document. Download the current factsheet and SID, then locate the versions issued immediately before the manager change.
Use the SID for the formal wording of the objective, category, investment strategy, asset-allocation limits, benchmark and risk disclosures. Use the factsheets for a readable month-by-month view of holdings, allocation, risk indicators, manager information and returns. If the current document refers to an addendum, read that addendum rather than relying on a summary in the factsheet.

For broader document access, SEBI’s Mutual Funds and RTAs resource page links to scheme-performance and statement-of-additional-information resources. Historical SEBI material from 2008 describes offer-document filing and update processes, but those pages are not a complete statement of current requirements; use the scheme’s current SID, addenda and applicable current regulations for present-day details.
Step 3: Build a before-and-after comparison
Place the pre-change and post-change documents side by side. Record the date that each document applies to, not merely the month in which you downloaded it. The following framework keeps the comparison focused on evidence rather than the manager’s reputation.

| Comparison area | What to record before the change | What to record after the change | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandate and category | Objective, category label and strategy wording in the earlier SID | Current objective, category and strategy wording | Shows whether the product still serves the purpose for which you bought it |
| Asset allocation | Permitted and typical equity, debt, cash or other exposures | Current limits and actual allocation | Changes in exposure can alter volatility and suitability even when the name is unchanged |
| Benchmark | Benchmark name and return convention shown in the earlier document | Current benchmark and convention | Returns are meaningful only when compared with the benchmark that applies to the same period |
| Manager responsibility | Name, role, experience and the sleeve or strategy covered | Incoming manager’s name, role, experience and coverage | Prevents you from attributing a partial-sleeve change to the entire scheme |
| Portfolio | Holdings, sector or issuer concentrations and cash level at the earlier date | Current holdings, concentrations and cash level | Reveals whether the portfolio has moved toward a different risk or style |
| Risk measures | Volatility, riskometer or other measures disclosed in the earlier factsheet | Current measures using the same definitions where available | Helps distinguish a return difference from a change in risk taken |
| Performance | Returns for the periods ending before the effective date | Returns for matching periods after the effective date | Creates a consistent, date-aware record instead of a selective snapshot |
| Plan and expense basis | Direct or regular plan, growth or income option, and expense information | The same plan, option and expense basis after the change | Different plans or return bases can make an apparently large difference meaningless |
| Investor fit | Your original goal, horizon and tolerance for loss | Whether those personal requirements remain unchanged | A scheme can be well managed yet unsuitable for your current circumstances |
If wording differs, quote the exact sentence in your notes and identify the document and effective date. A changed phrase is not automatically a changed mandate; check whether the AMC issued a formal addendum and what that notice says.
How to tell whether the scheme itself changed
A manager change and a scheme change are separate questions. Compare the objective, category, asset-allocation framework, benchmark, portfolio and risk disclosures before concluding that the product has become different. Personnel turnover alone does not prove that any of those features moved.
Objective and category
Read the objective and category in both SIDs. If the wording is identical, record that finding. If it differs, identify whether the difference is an editorial clarification or a formal change described in an addendum. A category change can affect the level and type of risk you are accepting, so do not infer its effect from the manager’s biography.
Asset-allocation framework
Check both the permitted ranges and the actual allocation. A scheme can remain within the same stated limits while moving from a high-equity position to a more defensive one, or from short-duration to longer-duration debt. The allocation table and portfolio date tell you what was held; the SID tells you what is permitted.
Benchmark and risk disclosure
Confirm that the benchmark name and return convention are the same. Also compare the riskometer and any disclosed volatility, duration, credit-quality or concentration measures. If a measure is calculated differently in the two documents, label the comparison as non-equivalent rather than treating the numbers as a trend.

Formal notices
When the AMC announces a scheme-document amendment, read the actual notice and its effective date. Do not rely on a third-party description of what the notice means. Current rules can change, so historical circular pages should be used for background only, while the current SID and addenda govern the scheme’s specific disclosures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to evaluate performance without blaming the change
Start with the scheme’s stated benchmark and category. AMFI’s investor guidance recommends tracking a scheme against its benchmark and cautions that “Past performance does not guarantee future performance.” The statement appears on AMFI’s Myths and Facts About Mutual Funds page.
- Match the plan and option. Compare direct with direct and regular with regular, and use the same growth or income option. Check whether each figure is a total-return, annualised or point-to-point number.
- Match the ending dates. Use periods that end on comparable dates and note the manager’s effective date. A one-month result that straddles the appointment tells you little about post-change decisions.
- Use several periods. Review short, medium and longer windows where the documents provide them. A strong or weak single period can reflect market conditions rather than a durable management effect.
- Compare with the benchmark and category. A positive return can still lag the benchmark, while a negative return may be comparatively resilient in a falling market. Category comparison adds context but does not replace the scheme’s own benchmark.
- Inspect exposure and risk alongside returns. Look at sectors, issuers, duration, credit quality, cash and concentration. If returns improved while risk rose materially, the result may not represent better risk-adjusted management.
- Separate observation from attribution. You can document that performance changed after the appointment. You cannot establish from timing alone that the manager caused the change.
Use AMFI’s and SEBI’s published performance resources to obtain consistent figures, and retain the return basis shown with each number. Never combine an annualised figure from one source with a point-to-point figure from another as if they were identical.
How to assess the incoming manager’s previous record
Record the new manager’s disclosed experience, prior roles and the date the current responsibility began. Then examine decisions and results in this scheme after the effective date. A prior record at another scheme does not automatically transfer to this one: the mandate, resources, portfolio constraints, team, market regime and role may all differ.
Do not describe another fund’s historical return as a forecast for your scheme. The available investor guidance does not establish a universal method for assigning a predecessor’s or successor’s past performance to a new role. Treat the biography as context, not as a guarantee.

Deciding whether to stay, monitor or switch
There is no one-size-fits-all sell rule based solely on a manager change. Use your completed comparison to decide which of three actions best fits your circumstances.
| Possible action | When it may be reasonable to consider | Checks required first |
|---|---|---|
| Stay invested | The objective, category, mandate and risk remain suitable, and the manager change does not undermine your reason for owning the scheme | Confirm the current disclosures and continue scheduled performance and risk monitoring |
| Monitor more closely | The mandate is still suitable but the new manager has a short tenure or the portfolio is in transition | Set a review date, save each factsheet and compare matching benchmark periods rather than reacting to daily movements |
| Switch or redeem | The scheme no longer fits your goal, horizon or risk tolerance, or a disclosed strategy change makes it unsuitable | Check exit costs, applicable taxes, transaction timing and the replacement scheme’s objective and risk before acting |
A switch is not free of consequences. Review any exit load or other stated cost, the tax treatment applicable to your holding period and jurisdiction, and whether selling would disrupt a planned goal. These details depend on your investment and tax circumstances; the scheme documents and a qualified tax professional can clarify them.
If you cannot weigh those factors, seek individualized guidance from a SEBI-registered investment adviser. An adviser can assess your complete portfolio and circumstances; a factsheet cannot.
A practical review worksheet
Create one page for each affected scheme. Fill it from the documents rather than memory.
- Scheme name, plan, option and folio or account reference.
- Outgoing manager, incoming manager, responsibilities and effective date.
- Announcement or addendum title, publication date and link on the AMC site.
- Pre-change and post-change SID versions, including their applicable dates.
- Objective, category, asset-allocation limits and benchmark in each version.
- Portfolio date, top holdings, sector or issuer concentrations and cash allocation.
- Riskometer and other risk measures, with their definitions and dates.
- Returns for matching periods, identified by plan, option, return basis and end date.
- Your goal, required time horizon, tolerance for loss and need for liquidity.
- Potential exit costs, tax considerations and the reason for any proposed action.
Save the worksheet with the source PDFs. On the next factsheet date, update only the fields that changed. This creates an audit trail and reduces the chance that a dramatic headline will replace a documented review.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Reacting to the headline alone
Mistake: redeeming as soon as a manager leaves. Correction: verify responsibility, date, mandate and risk disclosures first. The personnel event is a trigger for checking, not proof of deterioration.
Assuming the whole scheme changed
Mistake: treating a debt-sleeve manager change as an equity-strategy change, or assuming every holding changed on the appointment date. Correction: identify the managed sleeve and compare portfolio dates before and after the event.
Comparing incompatible returns
Mistake: mixing direct and regular plans, growth and income options, annualised and point-to-point returns, or different ending dates. Correction: standardise the plan, option, return basis and period before drawing a conclusion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Mistake: crediting or blaming the new manager for a few weeks of market movement. Correction: use multiple matching periods and examine exposure and risk alongside returns.
Borrowing another scheme’s track record
Mistake: treating the manager’s prior fund return as a promised result here. Correction: use the biography only as background and evaluate decisions and results in this scheme after the effective date.
Ignoring costs and taxes
Mistake: switching without checking exit charges or tax consequences. Correction: calculate the cost and confirm the replacement scheme still matches your objective, horizon and risk tolerance.
When to repeat the review
Repeat the comparison when the AMC issues a new addendum, changes the benchmark or objective, publishes a material allocation change, or appoints another manager. Otherwise, review the scheme on a schedule that matches your goal and the frequency of its factsheets rather than reacting to every market headline. Keep the review date and the document dates together so you know which evidence supported your decision.
