How to Check Whether a Jumbo CD Is Covered by FDIC or NCUA Insurance

Yes, a jumbo CD can qualify for federal deposit insurance, but the entire balance is not automatically protected. Coverage depends on the institution that actually holds the certificate, whether that institution is federally insured, the product’s legal classification, your ownership category, and all other deposits or shares you hold in that category at the same institution.

For a federally insured bank, the standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each qualifying ownership category. At a federally insured credit union, a share certificate is a time deposit covered by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, generally subject to a $250,000 individual-account limit. Follow the checks below before assuming a large certificate is fully protected.

What “jumbo CD” means for insurance

“Jumbo” describes the size or pricing of a certificate of deposit, not a special insurance class. A bank CD is an eligible deposit type, and a credit-union share certificate is a covered time deposit when issued by a federally insured credit union. Neither product receives a separate $250,000 limit simply because it has its own certificate number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The relevant question is how much you have in the same ownership category at the same insured institution. A $250,000 limit applies to the combined qualifying balance, not automatically to each CD, branch, account number, or maturity.

For example, opening three $100,000 individual CDs at one bank does not normally create three separate individual-account limits. The bank generally combines those balances with your individual checking, savings and other deposit accounts at that bank. By contrast, funds at a different insured bank are analyzed separately. A different ownership category may also be treated separately when its legal and recordkeeping requirements are satisfied.

First identify the institution holding the money

Start with the legal institution that holds the deposit. A certificate may be purchased directly from a bank or credit union, or through a broker, investment platform, or other intermediary. A marketplace name is not necessarily the insured institution.

Directly purchased certificates

Review the account agreement, confirmation, or periodic statement for the bank or credit union named as the depository institution. Record its exact legal name, because similarly named institutions can be separate entities. Also note whether the account is held by you personally, jointly, through a trust, for a business, or in a retirement arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brokered CDs

The FDIC glossary describes a brokered CD as one established at an insured bank by an agent or broker for one or more investors. The intermediary may arrange the purchase, but the underlying bank is the institution whose insurance status and deposit limits matter. Ask the broker for the issuing bank, the registration or ownership title, and the records the bank receives identifying you as the depositor.

Some platforms offer certificates from several banks under one login. Treat each issuing bank as a separate institution for the insurance review, but do not assume that a list of banks proves the registration is correct. Keep confirmations showing the bank, account title, principal, maturity and any accrued amount.

If you cannot determine which bank or credit union holds the funds, do not rely on the intermediary’s branding or a statement that the product is “insured.” Obtain the underlying institution and account-registration details first.

Verify federal insurance status

For a bank or savings association: FDIC

  1. Search the institution in the FDIC’s BankFind service using its legal name.
  2. Confirm that the result is the same institution named on your CD confirmation, not a similarly named bank or a parent company.
  3. If the listing is unclear, contact the FDIC at 1-877-ASK-FDIC (1-877-275-3342).

Only deposits at an FDIC-insured bank receive FDIC coverage. A bank’s membership in a financial group, a broker’s statement, or the location where a product was sold does not by itself establish insurance. If a bank has recently merged, changed names or transferred deposits, verify the current legal institution rather than relying on an old statement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a credit union: NCUA

  1. Use the NCUA Credit Union Locator to find the credit union by its legal name.
  2. Verify that it is federally insured and participates in the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund.
  3. Ask the credit union whether the certificate is held in an account covered by federal share insurance.

NCUA warns that some state-chartered credit unions use private insurance. Private coverage is not the same as federal NCUA share insurance or its backing by the full faith and credit of the United States. Confirm the insurer instead of assuming every credit union certificate has federal coverage.

NCUA says members do not need to apply for share insurance because it is provided automatically when they join a federally insured credit union. That automatic protection still depends on the credit union’s federal-insurance status, the account type and the applicable ownership limits.

Confirm that the product is an insured deposit

At an insured bank, a conventional CD is a deposit account. At a federally insured credit union, a share certificate is a time deposit or share account eligible for federal share insurance. Read the contract if the product is described with unfamiliar terminology or includes an investment component.

Products that are not deposits

A product sold in a bank or credit-union office is not automatically insured. FDIC and NCUA insurance do not cover investment products such as mutual funds, securities, or annuities. Those products can appear on the same statement or be offered by the same financial group as an insured CD, so identify the legal product rather than relying on the sales channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deposit insurance also does not protect you from an investment losing market value, a broker’s failure to perform, or a penalty for withdrawing a CD early. Its purpose is to protect an eligible deposit or share balance if the insured institution fails or closes, subject to the applicable rules and limit.

Check for unusual features

Ask whether the instrument is a deposit account or an investment security, who legally owns it, and which institution is obligated to repay the principal. Keep the certificate, disclosures, and confirmation; they provide the titling and institution information needed for an insurance calculation.

Calculate the FDIC coverage for a bank CD

FDIC’s consumer guidance states: “The standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.” The calculation has four parts:

  • Depositor: the person or legal owner recognized for the account.
  • Insured bank: the specific FDIC-insured institution holding the funds.
  • Ownership category: the legally recognized category in which the account is titled.
  • Combined balance: all of your deposits in that category at that bank, including the CD and other accounts.

The CD does not get a separate limit from a checking account, savings account, or another CD in the same category. Deposits at separate branches of one insured bank are combined. Deposits at different insured banks are considered separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different ownership categories can receive separate coverage when the account is genuinely established in that category and the required owners, beneficiaries, records and other conditions are met. Merely adding a name, changing an account nickname or opening another certificate does not automatically create a new category.

Illustrative FDIC calculations

Situation at one FDIC-insured bank Combined balance in one ownership category Illustrative result before additional interest
One $200,000 individual CD and no other individual deposits $200,000 $200,000 within the $250,000 standard limit
One $300,000 individual CD and no other individual deposits $300,000 $250,000 within the standard limit; $50,000 exceeds it
A $200,000 individual CD plus a $100,000 individual savings account $300,000 $250,000 within the standard limit; $50,000 exceeds it
A $300,000 individual CD at Bank A and a separate $300,000 individual CD at Bank B $300,000 at each bank Each bank is analyzed separately; the same $250,000 standard limit applies at each insured bank

These examples assume the accounts really are in the stated ownership category and that no other balances or special rules apply. They are not a determination of any particular account.

Interest can push a certificate over the limit

Under FDIC guidance, the principal and accrued interest through the date of a bank failure count toward the applicable coverage calculation. A certificate with exactly $250,000 in principal can therefore have an uninsured amount if accrued interest brings the total above $250,000. Leave room below the ceiling when interest is accumulating, or confirm the treatment of the expected balance with the FDIC’s estimator.

Calculate coverage for a credit-union share certificate

NCUA share insurance covers a share certificate as a time deposit at a federally insured credit union. NCUA’s Share Insurance Coverage page, last modified May 20, 2025, states that individual accounts have a $250,000 limit. A member’s interests in all joint accounts are subject to the combined limit described by NCUA, rather than a separate limit for each joint certificate.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

NCUA describes share-account coverage as dollar-for-dollar, including principal and posted dividends through the date the credit union closes, up to the applicable limit. Posted dividends can therefore increase the balance counted toward coverage. A certificate that is exactly at the limit today may exceed it after a dividend posts.

Ownership and titling matter

Different ownership types may receive different treatment, but the requirements must be met and the records must accurately identify the owners or beneficiaries. A certificate titled individually is not analyzed the same way as one titled jointly, in a trust arrangement, for retirement purposes, or for a business. Do not assume that changing the name on a certificate creates additional insurance.

For a joint-account, trust, retirement, or business arrangement, gather the exact title, owner or member information, beneficiary details where relevant, and every other share account at that credit union before using the estimator. Contact NCUA or the credit union when the arrangement is unusual.

Use the official insurance estimators

FDIC EDIE

  1. Collect the issuing bank’s legal name, account titles, ownership categories, current balances, and related deposits at that bank.
  2. Enter the information into the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE).
  3. Include accrued interest where the calculator requests the current or projected balance.
  4. Review which portion is shown as insured and which portion is uninsured.

EDIE is an estimate based on the accuracy of the institution, titling, ownership, and balance information you provide. It cannot correct an incorrectly titled account or identify an institution you entered incorrectly. Print or save the result with the date and balances used, then rerun it after a renewal, deposit, withdrawal or ownership change.

NCUA Share Insurance Estimator

  1. Confirm the credit union’s federal-insurance status and gather the certificate and other share-account records.
  2. Enter each account in the NCUA Share Insurance Estimator under its actual ownership type.
  3. Include principal and posted dividends and combine accounts held in the same ownership type as instructed by the estimator.
  4. Save the result and ask NCUA or the credit union about any account the tool cannot classify clearly.

Complex trust, retirement, business, and brokered arrangements may require agency guidance because titling, beneficial ownership, records, and the identity of the insured institution can change the outcome.

Questions to ask before buying or renewing

Before committing a large sum, ask the bank, credit union or intermediary to answer these questions in writing:

  • What is the exact legal name of the institution holding the deposit?
  • Is that institution currently insured by the FDIC or federally insured by NCUA?
  • Is the product legally a deposit or share certificate rather than a security, annuity or mutual fund?
  • How is the account titled, and which ownership category will be used?
  • Will the institution combine this balance with my other accounts there?
  • Will interest or dividends be paid into the certificate, and how will the resulting balance be treated?
  • For a brokered CD, what records identify me as the depositor and what happens if the CD is transferred or renewed?

Do not let a quoted annual percentage yield substitute for these answers. A high rate does not increase the federal insurance limit.

Common mistakes that leave a jumbo CD partly uninsured

  • Counting each certificate separately: multiple CDs in one ownership category at one institution are generally aggregated.
  • Counting branches as separate banks: branches of the same insured bank do not create separate FDIC limits.
  • Relying on a marketplace name: a broker or platform may not be the insured institution.
  • Assuming “credit union” means NCUA-insured: some state-chartered credit unions have private insurance.
  • Ignoring other deposits: checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, and other CDs in the same category can use the same limit.
  • Ignoring earned interest or dividends: accrued interest at a bank and posted dividends at a credit union count toward the applicable ceiling.
  • Confusing an investment with a deposit: mutual funds, securities, and annuities are not insured deposits or share accounts.
  • Assuming a new account title automatically qualifies: ownership-category requirements and account records must support the treatment.
  • Using stale information: a merger, charter change, new institution, renewal or ownership change can alter the calculation.
  • Relying on a verbal sales pitch: ask for the institution, registration and insurance details in the account documents.

A practical verification checklist

  1. Write down the exact legal name of the bank or credit union holding the certificate.
  2. For a brokered CD, obtain the underlying institution and registration details from the intermediary.
  3. Check the bank in FDIC BankFind or the credit union in the NCUA Credit Union Locator.
  4. Confirm that the instrument is a deposit or share certificate, not a security, annuity, or mutual fund.
  5. List every deposit or share account you hold at that institution in the same ownership category.
  6. Record current principal, accrued interest or posted dividends, and the certificate’s title.
  7. Run the appropriate FDIC EDIE or NCUA Share Insurance Estimator.
  8. Compare the result with your records and correct any wrong institution, title or balance entry.
  9. Contact the agency or a qualified professional before relying on the result if the account involves a trust, retirement plan, business, joint ownership, beneficiaries, or a brokered structure that the estimator cannot clearly classify.

What to do if the balance exceeds the insured amount

First confirm that the excess is real rather than caused by an incorrect institution name, duplicate entry or ownership category. If the excess remains, discuss options with the institution or adviser before purchasing or renewing the certificate. Possible approaches can include using different insured institutions or qualifying ownership categories, but each arrangement must independently meet the applicable rules. Merely opening another certificate, using another branch, or receiving another account number at the same bank does not by itself create additional coverage.

Moving money to another institution also requires checking that the new institution is separately insured and that the new account is titled as intended. Do not close a certificate early without considering early-withdrawal terms, tax consequences and the timing of the transfer. Insurance planning should not be based solely on a promotional rate.

Because federal limits and institution status can change, rerun the applicable estimator when a certificate renews, interest is added, ownership changes, or you move funds between institutions. The official agency result, based on complete and accurate account information, is more reliable than a product label or a sales description.

Frequently asked questions

Is my jumbo CD FDIC insured?

It may be. Confirm that the legal institution holding it appears in FDIC BankFind, that the product is a deposit, and that your combined balance in the applicable ownership category does not exceed $250,000 after including other deposits and accrued interest.

How do I check if a bank is FDIC insured?

Search the bank’s exact legal name in FDIC BankFind. If the result is unclear or the institution has changed names, call the FDIC at 1-877-ASK-FDIC (1-877-275-3342) and compare the result with your CD confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does FDIC insurance cover more than $250,000 in CDs?

It can cover more than $250,000 in total at one bank only when qualifying ownership categories provide separate coverage and all category requirements are met. Multiple CDs, branches or account numbers in the same category do not create extra limits.

How much of my CD is insured if I have other accounts at the same bank?

The bank generally combines your CD with your other deposits in the same ownership category. For example, a $200,000 individual CD plus $100,000 in an individual savings account produces a $300,000 combined balance, leaving $50,000 above the standard limit before considering any special category treatment.

Are credit-union certificates covered by NCUA insurance?

A share certificate is covered when issued by a federally insured credit union and held in an eligible share account. Verify the credit union through the NCUA Credit Union Locator because some state-chartered credit unions use private insurance instead.

Are brokered CDs insured?

A brokered CD can be an insured deposit when it is established at an FDIC-insured bank, but the underlying bank—not the broker or marketplace—is the relevant institution. Obtain the issuing bank, registration and balance records, then include the CD in the appropriate ownership-category calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does interest count toward the insurance limit?

FDIC guidance counts principal and accrued interest through the date of a bank failure. NCUA counts principal and posted dividends through the date a credit union closes. Leave room below the limit or include the expected balance in the applicable estimator.

Does using different branches protect more money?

No. Deposits at separate branches of one insured bank are generally combined. Separate account numbers and maturities do not by themselves create additional FDIC coverage.

What if my account is a trust, retirement account or business account?

Those arrangements can be subject to different ownership-category rules, but the exact title, beneficial ownership, records and account type matter. Enter complete information into the official estimator and contact FDIC or NCUA, or a qualified professional, if the result is unclear.

The Bottom Line

A jumbo CD is not automatically insured in full. Identify the bank or credit union that actually holds it, verify FDIC or federal NCUA insurance, confirm that the product is a deposit or share certificate, and combine every balance in the same ownership category. Include accrued interest or posted dividends, then run FDIC EDIE or the NCUA Share Insurance Estimator. If the account involves a trust, retirement plan, business, joint ownership or brokered structure, confirm the result with the agency before relying on it.
