To check, identify the legal institution that holds the deposit, verify that institution in the correct government directory, and review the account disclosures—especially when a financial-technology company is involved. Banks use FDIC insurance; federally insured credit unions use NCUA share insurance. The standard protection is generally $250,000 per depositor or share owner, per insured institution, per ownership category, with balances in the same category combined.
What you are actually checking
Insurance follows the institution and the legal account structure, not the phrase “high-yield” and not the company’s marketing name. A deposit held directly at an FDIC-insured bank can qualify for FDIC coverage. A share account at a federally insured credit union can qualify for NCUA coverage through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF). A nonbank company may arrange for a partner bank to hold customer funds, but the nonbank’s own name does not establish insurance.

| Institution holding the funds | Federal insurance system | Standard limit | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| FDIC-insured bank or savings association | Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) | $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category | Search the exact institution in the FDIC BankFind Suite or call 1-877-275-3342 |
| Federally insured credit union | NCUA share insurance through the NCUSIF | $250,000 per share owner, per insured credit union, per ownership category | Check the NCUA directory and the official NCUA insurance sign; use the NCUA share-insurance estimator for scenarios |
| Nonbank or financial-technology company using a partner bank | Potential pass-through FDIC coverage, if applicable requirements are met | Depends on the underlying insured bank, ownership category, records and aggregate balances | Read the account disclosures and identify the actual bank holding and recording the funds |
Insurance is automatic for an eligible deposit account opened at an FDIC-insured bank; you do not buy a separate policy. The same principle does not mean every product sold by that bank is insured. For a credit union, “deposit” is commonly described as a share account, and federal share insurance depends on the credit union’s insured status.

Start with the account agreement rather than the advertised rate. The legal institution should appear in one or more of these places:

- The account-opening agreement or terms and conditions.
- A periodic statement, confirmation email or tax document.
- Deposit disclosures identifying the bank, savings association or credit union.
- A section explaining where funds are held, custodial arrangements or pass-through coverage.
Record the institution’s complete legal name. A brand name, app name or website domain may differ from the chartered bank or credit union. That exact legal name is what you use in the FDIC or NCUA directory. If the documents name more than one institution, determine which one receives and records your particular balance; coverage is evaluated at the insured institution holding the funds.
When the account is offered by a nonbank
Some financial-technology companies are not banks. Their disclosures may state that customer money is deposited at one or more partner banks. FDIC guidance allows for pass-through coverage in qualifying arrangements, but requirements apply. The arrangement must identify the underlying insured bank and preserve records that connect each customer to the funds. Do not assume that an app’s statement that money is “protected” means the app itself is FDIC-insured.
Read the disclosure for the names of the partner bank or banks, how deposits are titled, whether funds can be spread across institutions, and what happens if the intermediary or a partner bank fails. If those details are unclear, ask the company for the legal deposit-holding institution and the documents describing pass-through treatment before moving money.
Step 2: Verify a bank with the FDIC
Use the FDIC’s BankFind Suite when the legal institution is a bank or savings association. Search the exact name from your agreement or statement, including the institution’s wording rather than only the consumer-facing brand.
- Open the FDIC BankFind Suite.
- Enter the complete legal bank or savings-association name shown in your account documents.
- Confirm that the result matches the institution named on your account, including its charter or location information when displayed.
- Check that the result identifies the institution as FDIC-insured.
- Save or print the result with the date of your check for your records.
If the search produces several similarly named institutions, compare the legal name and other identifying details in the result with your account agreement. A separate branch does not create a separate insurance limit; branches are locations of the same insured bank. A separately chartered insured bank is treated as a different institution.

For questions about whether a bank is insured, the FDIC lists the toll-free number 1-877-275-3342. Ask about the exact legal institution, not merely the brand under which the account is advertised.
Step 3: Verify a credit union with the NCUA
If your account is with a credit union, check the institution in the NCUA’s agency directory. Federally insured credit unions must indicate their insured status and display the official NCUA insurance sign. The sign’s wording is: “Your savings federally insured to at least $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government.”
- Copy the credit union’s complete legal name from your membership or account documents.
- Search that name in the NCUA directory.
- Confirm that the directory identifies the credit union as federally insured.
- Look for the official NCUA insurance sign on the credit union’s website, statements or premises.
- Use the NCUA Electronic Share Insurance Estimator when you need to analyze several accounts or ownership categories.
Some state-chartered credit unions use private deposit insurers instead of federal share insurance. Private coverage is not backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. If federal protection is important to you, rely on the NCUA directory’s federal-insurance status rather than a generic statement that an account is “insured.”
Step 4: Understand what the $250,000 limit means
The standard limit is generally $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category for FDIC coverage and $250,000 per share owner, per insured credit union, per ownership category for NCUA coverage. It is not automatically $250,000 for every account number.
Accounts in the same ownership category at the same institution are combined. For example, if one person has a high-yield savings account and another deposit account in that person’s single ownership category at the same bank, the balances are evaluated together. Opening the accounts at different branches does not create additional limits. Accounts at separately chartered insured institutions are evaluated separately.

Ownership categories can receive separate coverage when their applicable requirements are satisfied. Categories can include single-owner accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts and qualifying trust accounts. Because the rules depend on the ownership records and beneficiaries, do not assume that changing an account label automatically creates another insured limit.

|---|---|---|
| $180,000 savings account plus $90,000 certificate or other deposit in the same single-owner category | Single ownership | $270,000 is combined for that category; the standard limit generally applies to the first $250,000, leaving $20,000 above the standard limit |
| $240,000 savings balance with interest accruing before a bank failure | Single ownership | Principal and accrued interest through the failure date count toward the limit, so the final amount can exceed the stated principal |
| Deposits held at two separately chartered insured banks | Same owner, separate institutions | Each insured institution has its own applicable limit; branches of one bank would not be treated this way |

What FDIC and NCUA insurance does—and does not—cover
Eligible bank deposits
FDIC guidance identifies savings accounts among covered deposit products at an FDIC-insured bank. Insurance is tied to the deposit account and the coverage limits, not to the account’s interest rate. Principal and accrued interest through the date of a bank failure are included when calculating the covered amount.
Credit-union share accounts
At a federally insured credit union, savings and similar deposit products are generally described as shares. NCUA share insurance applies within the same $250,000-per-share-owner, per-credit-union, per-category framework, subject to the account’s ownership records.
Investments and other non-deposit products
FDIC insurance does not cover stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities or other non-deposit investments merely because you bought them through an insured bank. A bank can offer both insured deposits and uninsured investments. Read the product description and disclosures to establish what you own before treating a balance as an insured deposit.

How to compare two high-yield savings accounts safely
Compare insurance separately from the quoted annual percentage yield. Use this sequence for each account:
- Identify the legal holder. Write down the bank, savings association, credit union or partner bank named in the documents.
- Match the regulator. Use FDIC BankFind for a bank or savings association; use the NCUA directory for a credit union.
- Confirm current status. Make sure the exact institution is listed as insured, rather than relying on a logo or an old advertisement.
- Classify the product. Verify that the account is a deposit or share account, not an investment or another non-deposit product.
- Map ownership. List the owner, co-owners, beneficiaries or trust terms shown in the account records.
- Aggregate balances. Add all deposits or shares in the same ownership category at that institution, including expected accrued interest.
- Check intermediary conditions. For a nonbank offer, read how funds are titled, recorded and allocated among partner banks and how pass-through coverage is claimed.
- Run the scenario through an official estimator. Use FDIC EDIE or the NCUA Electronic Share Insurance Estimator when your balances span accounts or categories.
The rate can change while the institution and insurance status remain the same. Conversely, a high rate cannot compensate for failing to verify where the funds are held or whether the structure qualifies for coverage.
Using the official calculators
FDIC Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE)
EDIE is designed to analyze how account ownership and balances affect FDIC coverage. Enter each deposit at the same insured bank, assign its ownership category, and include accrued interest when estimating a balance near the limit. The result is useful only when the entries match the legal titling in your bank’s records.
NCUA Electronic Share Insurance Estimator
The NCUA estimator serves the same planning purpose for federally insured credit-union shares. Confirm federal insurance in the NCUA directory first, then enter the accounts, share owners and ownership categories represented in your membership records.
Neither calculator turns an uninsured product into an insured one. They help apply the rules to a structure that has already been identified as a qualifying deposit or share arrangement.

Problems that commonly lead to a wrong answer
Searching the brand instead of the institution
An app or marketing brand may not appear in BankFind or the NCUA directory because it is not the chartered institution. Search the legal name in the disclosures and then determine whether a partner-bank arrangement exists.
Treating an insurance logo as proof by itself
A logo or sign is a useful indicator, but verify the exact institution in the appropriate government directory. This is especially important when names are similar or an institution has changed ownership or charter details.
Assuming every product at an insured institution is covered
Insurance is limited to eligible deposits or shares. Securities, mutual funds, annuities and other investments can be offered alongside insured accounts without becoming insured deposits.
Counting each account number separately
The standard limit is generally applied to combined balances in one ownership category at one insured institution. Splitting money among several savings accounts at the same bank does not, by itself, create several $250,000 limits.
Ignoring interest when close to the ceiling
Accrued interest through a bank failure is included in the coverage calculation. A principal balance that appears just below $250,000 can move above the standard limit as interest accrues.
Confusing private credit-union insurance with federal insurance
A state-chartered credit union may use private insurance. If you specifically require federal protection, confirm federal NCUA insurance in the directory and do not rely on an unqualified “insured” statement.
A record-keeping checklist
- Keep the account agreement showing the legal institution and product type.
- Save the dated BankFind or NCUA directory result.
- Retain disclosures describing partner banks and pass-through coverage for nonbank accounts.
- List every deposit or share at the same institution by ownership category.
- Review balances periodically when interest pushes an account toward $250,000.
- Recheck the institution after a merger, charter change, account conversion or new intermediary arrangement.
This file gives you the information needed to repeat the verification without relying on a remembered logo, rate page or account nickname.

Bottom line for a high-yield savings account
Verify the legal institution first, then use the matching federal directory: FDIC BankFind for a bank or savings association, and the NCUA directory for a federally insured credit union. Confirm that the product is an eligible deposit or share account, calculate all balances in the same ownership category at that institution, and include accrued interest when you are near the limit. For a nonbank offer, identify the underlying partner bank and read the pass-through disclosures. The advertised yield is a separate question from whether your balance is federally insured.
