How to Check Whether a Diesel Blend Is Safe for Your Vehicle or Equipment

Do not decide from the word “diesel” or from a blend percentage alone. To determine whether a fuel is safe, identify the exact machine and market, find the blend limit and fuel specification in its current owner’s and engine manuals, and confirm the warranty position. If those documents do not clearly approve the blend you intend to use, contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before refueling.

“Diesel blend” can mean several fuels. The guidance below is specifically about petroleum diesel mixed with biodiesel, such as B5 or B20. It should not be extended automatically to renewable diesel, Fischer–Tropsch fuels, heating oil, or an unspecified product.

What the blend labels mean

The letter B identifies biodiesel content by volume. The number is the maximum percentage in the blend, not a promise that every engine can use it.

Label Meaning Fuel-quality standard cited by DOE guidance Compatibility point
B5 Up to 5% biodiesel Included within ASTM D975 diesel-fuel specifications Generally approved for diesel engines in broad U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency guidance, but the unit’s own manual and warranty still control.
B6–B20 More than 5% and up to 20% biodiesel ASTM D7467 Many engines can use these blends without modification, yet the engine maker’s warranty and approval must be checked.
B100 Neat biodiesel, with no petroleum diesel mixed in Separate biodiesel specifications and handling requirements apply Not a default fuel for ordinary diesel equipment; special handling and equipment changes may be required.

DOE’s Biodiesel Handling and Use Guide: Sixth Edition (approximately 2023) describes B5 as up to 5 percent biodiesel and B6–B20 as 6–20 percent. The Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) uses the same B20 range. Fuel standards describe the quality of the product; they do not, by themselves, grant permission from an engine manufacturer.

ASTM standards can be revised. When a manual names an edition or a specification, verify the current applicable requirement with the fuel supplier and the manufacturer rather than assuming an older guide is still the latest version.

Follow this verification sequence before you buy fuel

  1. Identify both the fuel and the machine. Obtain the pump label, delivery ticket, or supplier specification showing the proposed blend. Record the equipment make, model, model year, engine family or engine model, and the country in which it will operate. A tractor, standby generator, boat, truck, and construction machine may have different approvals even when they use similar engines.
  2. Read the exact documents. Check the equipment owner’s manual, the separate engine manual, the fuel-system section, maintenance instructions, and the warranty. Search the index or electronic copy for “biodiesel,” “B5,” “B20,” “fuel requirements,” “fuel quality,” and “warranty exclusions.” For equipment sold with an industrial engine, the engine maker’s document is essential; do not rely only on a vehicle or machine brand brochure.
  3. Find an explicit blend ceiling. Write down the highest blend the document permits, any required certification, and whether approval is conditional on temperature, storage, service intervals, or a particular market. “Biodiesel capable” is not a sufficient answer if the document does not state the percentage or specification.
  4. Match the fuel specification. For B5, check that the product is sold as diesel meeting the applicable ASTM D975 requirement. For B6–B20, check for ASTM D7467 compliance. Keep the specification and the OEM approval as two separate checks: a fuel can meet a standard while still being outside a particular engine’s warranty.
  5. Check operating conditions. Review cold-weather, storage, and infrequent-use warnings. Note the lowest expected temperature, how long the machine may sit, and whether the manual calls for accelerated filter changes or other precautions. Do not transfer a temperature limit from another manufacturer’s manual.
  6. Verify the market and label. Fuel names and pump labels differ by country. Use documentation written for the machine’s sales region and follow local fuel regulations. If a U.S. manual and a local supplier label appear inconsistent, stop and obtain clarification rather than guessing.
  7. Ask when anything is ambiguous. Give the manufacturer or authorized dealer the complete machine identification, proposed blend, fuel specification, climate, and storage pattern. Request a written answer that states the maximum blend and any conditions. Keep it with the service records.
  8. Purchase only after approval is established. Use a commercial supplier that can document the blend and applicable quality certification. Follow the exact manual’s requirements for delivery, storage, filtration, and labeling.

Take a photograph or save a copy of the pump label and delivery ticket. A verbal statement that a station “usually sells B20” is not enough when the warranty depends on the actual blend and quality. If fuel is delivered into a bulk tank, record the date, supplier, batch or delivery number, blend percentage, and stated specification so the fuel can be traced if a problem occurs.

How to read the approval language

Owner’s manual versus engine manual

Some equipment manuals cover controls and maintenance but defer fuel compatibility to the engine maker. Read both documents. If the machine manual allows B5 but the engine warranty limits use to conventional diesel, the more restrictive, engine-specific condition is the one to resolve with the manufacturer.

Warranty wording matters

DOE guidance says original-equipment manufacturers generally approve B5, while higher blends such as B20 require checking the OEM engine warranty. A statement that an engine can run on a blend is not necessarily a promise that fuel-related repairs remain covered. Look for exclusions involving fuel quality, storage, contamination, or unapproved biodiesel percentages.

The AFDC notes that many engines can use B20 without modification, but it still directs users to consult the warranty statement. “Can operate” and “approved under warranty” are separate questions. Ask specifically whether the proposed blend is allowed for your engine family, model year, emissions configuration, and country.

Approval may be conditional

A document can approve a blend only when it meets a named standard, is purchased from a certified source, or is used within a temperature range. Record every condition, not just the headline percentage. If the manual gives no answer for your exact model year or engine family, treat the status as unresolved.

Fuel standard and engine approval are different tests

Use this two-column check before refueling:

Question What it establishes
Does the supplier document the required ASTM or local fuel specification? Whether the fuel meets a recognized quality definition for its blend category.
Does the exact engine or equipment documentation approve that blend? Whether the manufacturer permits the fuel in that unit and under what conditions.
Does the warranty contain exclusions or special service requirements? Whether use could affect coverage or impose additional maintenance obligations.

Passing the first question cannot substitute for passing the second. Conversely, an approval in a manual does not remove the need to buy fuel that meets the stated quality standard.

B5 is treated within ASTM D975 diesel specifications in the DOE guide. B6 through B20 are covered by ASTM D7467. These designations describe the fuel category and quality requirements; they are not an engine certification mark. B100 is neat biodiesel and may require special handling, storage practices, or equipment modifications. DOE guidance does not present it as a default choice for ordinary diesel equipment.

Cold weather, storage, and infrequent use can change the answer

Cold temperatures

DOE warns that higher biodiesel blends can gel in cold temperatures. Gelling can restrict fuel flow and complicate starting. The temperature at which this occurs depends on the fuel, blend, climate, and equipment, so a generic internet temperature chart is not a replacement for the machine’s instructions.

A specific example illustrates why limits must not be generalized: the 2018 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax Diesel Supplement recommends avoiding biodiesel blends above B5 below 0°C (32°F) because of possible filter plugging, gelling, and freezing. That recommendation applies to the vehicles covered by that supplement and its market; it is not a universal limit for every diesel vehicle, tractor, generator, or boat.

Storage time

DOE guidance identifies storage issues with high blends. If equipment will sit for an extended period, read the storage section for maximum duration, tank preparation, filtration, and fuel rotation. A blend approved for daily operation may have additional requirements for seasonal or emergency equipment that is rarely run.

Do not assume that adding an aftermarket additive solves a compatibility question. An additive cannot turn an unapproved blend into an approved one, and the cited General Motors guidance warns against relying on home biodiesel test kits because their quality cannot be verified by approved scientific methods. Use the supplier’s documented quality certification and the manufacturer’s instructions instead.

Operating pattern

Record whether the machine runs continuously, makes short trips, operates only in winter, or remains idle between emergencies. Share that information with the dealer when asking for approval. The same percentage can present different practical risks when the fuel system is used daily versus stored for months.

Equipment-specific checks

Road vehicles

Use the vehicle’s model-year owner’s manual and diesel supplement, if one exists. Confirm the market because a North American supplement may not describe fuel sold in another region. Check the warranty section before accepting a station’s assertion that “all diesel trucks take B20.”

Tractors and construction equipment

Read the equipment manual and the engine manufacturer’s documentation. Identify whether emissions equipment, high-pressure injection, or a special fuel filter creates additional instructions. Do not assume that approval for a similarly powered road vehicle extends to off-road equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generators and emergency equipment

Pay particular attention to storage language, because standby units may remain unused for long periods. Obtain the engine maker’s written blend limit and any fuel-rotation schedule before filling a bulk tank. Include the generator’s load pattern and expected start-up temperature in the question to the dealer.

Boats and other seasonal machinery

Seasonal storage and temperature swings make the manual’s storage and climate conditions especially important. Confirm the blend for the exact engine, not merely for the boat model or fuel dock. A fuel approved for a frequently used vehicle may need different handling when a boat or mower is laid up for a season.

How to compare two fuel choices

When both a lower and higher biodiesel blend are available, compare the same five attributes rather than treating the higher number as an upgrade.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Biodiesel percentage What percentage is actually on the label or delivery document?
OEM limit and warranty What maximum does the exact engine documentation permit, and are there exclusions?
Fuel quality Does the product meet the applicable ASTM or local specification?
Temperature and storage Will the machine face cold weather, long storage, or infrequent operation?
Market labeling Does the label match the country-specific documentation and regulations?

A lower blend that is explicitly approved and correctly labeled is the safer choice than a higher blend whose approval is uncertain. DOE notes that B100 has lower energy per gallon than petroleum diesel and that blends above B20 may require special handling or equipment modifications; those are additional reasons not to select a high blend without written approval.

What to do when the documents disagree or say nothing

  • Do not average the limits. If one document says B5 and another says B20, ask the engine maker which statement applies to your engine family and model year.
  • Do not infer approval from the fuel pump. A B20 label shows the product category, not permission for your unit.
  • Do not rely on a generic “biodiesel-ready” claim. Obtain the percentage, specification, and conditions in writing.
  • Do not use an older manual as conclusive evidence. Model-year updates, warranty revisions, and ASTM changes can alter the answer.
  • Do not substitute a test kit or additive for documentation. Product testing at home cannot establish OEM approval or prove that a batch meets the required quality standard.
  • Pause the refueling decision. Contact the manufacturer or authorized dealer with the machine identification and supplier’s specification. If no authoritative answer is available, use a fuel that the current documentation clearly permits.

Fuel sourcing and station rules

After compatibility is confirmed, buy from a commercial source that can identify the blend and certify its quality. The 2018 Duramax supplement, for example, directs users toward certified commercial biodiesel and explains U.S. labeling for blends above B5. Follow the requirements in your own manual and local law rather than copying that example.

Fuel-storage regulations are a separate issue from engine approval. DOE’s codes guidance describes compatibility demonstrations and 30-day advance notification for certain U.S. underground storage systems holding blends above B20. Those station or tank requirements do not establish what a vehicle or engine may burn. A compliant storage tank can contain fuel that a particular engine warranty does not approve, and an approved engine can still require a storage system that meets local rules.

A printable pre-refueling checklist

  • Machine make, model, year, engine family, and operating country recorded.
  • Proposed blend percentage confirmed from the pump, supplier, or delivery document.
  • Owner’s manual and separate engine manual checked for biodiesel and fuel specifications.
  • Maximum approved blend and all conditions written down.
  • Warranty exclusions reviewed.
  • Applicable ASTM or local fuel standard verified with the supplier.
  • Lowest operating temperature and expected storage period compared with the manual’s cautions.
  • Any disagreement or missing information resolved with the manufacturer or authorized dealer.
  • Commercial, quality-documented fuel selected only after the checks above are complete.
  • Delivery records, labels, and written approvals retained with the maintenance file.

Key takeaways

The safe limit is unit-specific: there is no universal maximum biodiesel blend for every diesel vehicle or piece of equipment. B5 is broadly approved in DOE and EPA guidance, but higher blends require confirmation from the exact engine maker and warranty. ASTM D975 and ASTM D7467 tell you about fuel quality, not whether your equipment maker authorizes the fuel. Temperature, storage time, equipment type, country, and model year can change the practical answer. When the documentation is unclear, do not refuel until the manufacturer or an authorized dealer confirms the blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use B20 in my diesel truck?

Only if the exact truck, engine family, model year, market, and warranty documentation approve B20. AFDC says many engines can use B20 without modification, but that general statement does not replace the truck maker’s warranty. Check the owner’s manual and diesel supplement, then ask the manufacturer or dealer if the wording is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What biodiesel blend can my tractor use?

There is no universal tractor limit. Check the tractor manual and the engine maker’s manual for an explicit percentage, fuel specification, temperature limits, storage rules, and warranty conditions. Approval for a road vehicle with a similar engine does not automatically apply to a tractor.

How do I know if my diesel engine is approved for biodiesel?

Find the engine’s exact make, model, family, year, and operating market, then search the current manuals and warranty for “biodiesel,” “B5,” “B20,” and fuel requirements. The document should state the maximum blend and conditions. If it does not, obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before fueling.

Does ASTM D975 or D7467 prove that my equipment can use the fuel?

No. ASTM D975 generally covers diesel containing up to B5, while ASTM D7467 covers B6–B20. Those standards describe fuel quality. The equipment maker separately decides which fuel it approves and whether warranty coverage applies.

Is B100 safe in a normal diesel vehicle or generator?

Do not assume so. B100 is neat biodiesel, and DOE guidance says it may require special handling and equipment modifications. It is not a default fuel choice for ordinary diesel equipment; use it only when the exact manufacturer documentation expressly permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my station label says B20 but my manual says only B5?

Follow the manual’s more restrictive stated limit until the engine maker resolves the conflict. A pump label identifies the fuel being sold; it does not authorize that fuel for your unit. Provide the manufacturer or dealer with the machine identification and supplier specification and request a written answer.

Can a fuel additive or home test kit make an unapproved blend safe?

No. An additive cannot create OEM approval. The cited General Motors guidance also cautions against home biodiesel test kits because their quality cannot be verified by approved scientific methods. Use documented commercial fuel that meets the required specification and the manufacturer’s conditions.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact engine before choosing the blend. Confirm the percentage, applicable fuel standard, OEM approval, warranty terms, temperature limits, storage requirements, and country-specific labeling. If any part is unclear, use a clearly approved fuel or obtain written confirmation from the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before refueling.
