To verify whether a US-listed share has actually been delisted, identify the exact issuer, share class, ticker and exchange; check the exchange’s official suspension or removal records; search SEC EDGAR for the relevant Form 25-NSE or Form 25 filing; then read the issuer’s latest announcement for the reason, effective date and any move to another trading venue. A missing quote, trading halt or pending notice is not, by itself, proof that the exchange removal is complete.
What “delisted” means
A delisting is the removal of a security from a particular stock exchange. It does not necessarily mean that the company has ceased operating, that the shares have been canceled or that investors have automatically lost their ownership. The shares may move to another exchange, trade over the counter (OTC), or become difficult to quote while a broker reviews the security.

The key question is therefore specific: Has this exact security been removed from this exact exchange, and what happened afterward? A company can have common stock, preferred stock, warrants or other securities with different tickers and different listing outcomes. A ticker can also change during a corporate action. Always verify the security identity before interpreting a notice.

Confirm the security before checking any record
Write down all four identifiers from your brokerage statement, an issuer filing or the exchange page:

- Legal issuer name: Use the company’s formal name, not only a familiar brand name.
- Ticker symbol: Record the symbol as it appeared when you bought or last saw the security, and check whether it has changed.
- Share class or instrument: Distinguish common stock from preferred stock, units, warrants, rights or debt.
- Listing exchange: Note whether the security was listed on Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or another US venue.
Search the issuer and symbol together. Company filings can mention several securities, and an announcement about a warrant or preferred class does not establish what happened to the common shares in your account.
Understand the status shown by each official source
Different records describe different stages. Use the wording and effective dates in the record rather than treating every disappearance or warning as a completed delisting.

Nasdaq states that an issue is delisted 10 calendar days after the date its Form 25, Notification of Removal from Listing and/or Registration, is filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Treat that as a procedural timing rule, not as a substitute for checking the actual filing and any case-specific order or delay.
Step 1: Check the exchange’s official status page
Nasdaq-listed securities
Nasdaq publishes a daily list of issues pending suspension or delisting. Find the issuer or symbol and read the entry’s status, reason and dates. Nasdaq also distinguishes a noncompliance list from the pending suspension or delisting list. A noncompliance entry signals a listing-standard problem; it does not, on its own, show that the security has already been removed.
If the security appears on a pending list, record the date of the notice and the stated next event. Then confirm whether a Form 25 has been filed. If the symbol is absent, do not conclude that the shares are safe or that the delisting was reversed: the entry may have moved to another status page, the ticker may have changed, or the security may have transferred.

NYSE-listed securities
NYSE publishes separate lists for exchange-initiated and issuer-initiated removals. Determine which list applies. An exchange-initiated entry generally remains listed until the removal application becomes effective; NYSE describes the period as generally about ten days, but the individual filing and status control.
An issuer-initiated removal can reflect a voluntary decision, such as moving to another venue or ceasing a listing. Read the issuer’s announcement alongside the NYSE entry to identify the exact class of security and the planned effective date.

Step 2: Search SEC EDGAR for the removal filing
The SEC’s Exchange Delistings guidance directs investors to EDGAR for the formal record. For an exchange delisting, search for Form 25-NSE. For an issuer’s delisting notice, search for Form 25. Use EDGAR’s filing-type and company or exchange search options.
- Enter the issuer’s legal name or its SEC filing identifier, rather than relying only on the ticker.
- Filter by the relevant form type: Form 25-NSE for an exchange delisting or Form 25 for an issuer delisting notice.
- Open the filing and verify the named security, including the class and ticker.
- Record the filing date, stated reason and removal or effectiveness language.
- Compare the filing with the exchange page and the issuer’s latest Form 8-K or equivalent announcement.
The filing date matters because it starts the applicable effectiveness timetable. Do not infer a completed removal from a press release that says an application was submitted, or from a broker display that has not yet updated.
Step 3: Read the issuer’s latest filing and announcement
Exchange records establish the formal process; the issuer’s filings explain the context. Look for a recent Form 8-K or equivalent announcement covering:

- the reason for a voluntary or involuntary removal;
- the expected last trading date or effective date;
- an appeal, cure period or other condition that could change the timetable;
- a new exchange, OTC venue or replacement ticker;
- merger, liquidation, reverse split, bankruptcy or another corporate action affecting the shares.
Use the filing’s exact wording. “Plans to delist,” “has received a notice,” “trading has been suspended” and “the removal became effective” describe different events. If the company says the shares will trade OTC, verify the new symbol and class rather than assuming the old exchange ticker will continue unchanged.

Leaving one exchange does not necessarily end trading. Search the named replacement venue and confirm that it lists the same issuer, share class and current symbol. An issuer may move from an exchange to another exchange or to an OTC market. A company filing can identify that venue and ticker.
OTC quoting can be less visible than an exchange quote. After a trading suspension, OTC quotation may require broker-dealer review. A stale quote, a zero displayed price or no search result can therefore reflect a quoting or account-display issue rather than a cancellation of the shares.
If no replacement venue is identified, check subsequent issuer filings and corporate-action notices. The absence of an immediate quote is evidence that you need more verification, not proof that the security has no value.
Step 5: Reconcile the result with your brokerage account
Broker systems often use internal symbols and may temporarily hide a security during a corporate action. If a ticker vanished, contact the broker and ask for the status of the exact security in your account.

- Ask whether the position is marked as delisted, halted, transferred, canceled or under corporate-action processing.
- Provide the issuer name, old ticker, share class and approximate purchase date.
- Ask whether a new ticker, CUSIP or venue has been assigned.
- Ask how the position is displayed, valued and restricted while no regular quote is available.
- Request the effective date and the document or notice on which the account treatment is based.
Keep the broker’s response with the SEC filing and exchange notice. The broker can explain how your holding is handled, but the exchange and SEC records establish whether the formal exchange-removal process occurred.
How to determine the effective date
Use the date in the applicable Form 25 filing and the exchange’s status record. Nasdaq’s stated rule is 10 calendar days from the Form 25 filing date. NYSE exchange-initiated issues generally remain on the removal list until the application becomes effective, often around ten days. Those are general procedures; the specific filing controls if the record shows a different date, appeal or delay.
Build a simple timeline:
- Notice date: The exchange or issuer announces noncompliance, a proposed suspension or a removal application.
- Filing date: Form 25-NSE or Form 25 is filed with the SEC.
- Effectiveness date: The exchange removal takes effect under the filing and applicable process.
- Post-removal trading: The issuer identifies a new exchange, OTC venue or another outcome.
Do not replace these dates with the day a quote disappeared from an app. Data vendors and brokers can update at different times.

Common mistakes that produce a false delisting conclusion
Confusing noncompliance with removal
A continued-listing deficiency can be cured or appealed. Treating the first notice as a completed delisting can lead you to sell, transfer or report a position incorrectly.

A suspension pauses trading on a venue. It does not itself prove that the security was formally removed. Check for the subsequent Form 25 filing and effective status.

Checking only the old ticker
Ticker changes and multiple share classes are common sources of false matches. Search by issuer, class and exchange as well as by symbol.
Assuming exchange removal means the shares are worthless
Removal from one exchange can be followed by trading on another venue or OTC. Even when no quote is currently visible, ask the issuer and broker how the shares are being handled before drawing a value conclusion.
Relying on a single data vendor
Broker and market-data displays are useful clues but do not replace the exchange notice and SEC filing. Use the official records to establish the formal status.

Use this sequence when you need a quick but defensible answer:
- Security identified? If not, obtain the legal issuer, class, ticker and original exchange from your statement or filing.
- Exchange status found? Check Nasdaq’s or NYSE’s relevant list. If the entry says noncompliance, continue monitoring; if it says pending removal, find the filing.
- SEC filing found? Search Form 25-NSE for exchange delistings and Form 25 for issuer notices. Verify the class and date.
- Effective date passed? Compare the filing date and stated effectiveness language with today’s date and any appeal or delay.
- New venue named? Search that venue under the issuer and new symbol. If no venue is named, review later issuer filings.
- Broker display differs? Ask the broker about the exact security and any corporate action; do not rely on the missing quote alone.
What the answer means for your shares
A completed exchange delisting answers where the security is no longer listed; it does not by itself answer whether your shares were canceled, exchanged, liquidated or transferred. Those outcomes depend on the issuer’s corporate action and the account records. Read the issuer’s announcement for any merger, liquidation, reverse split or replacement security, and ask the broker how the position is recorded.
If the shares continue OTC or on another exchange, the new venue may have different quote visibility, trading access and settlement procedures. Confirm the current symbol and class before placing an order or reporting a tax transaction.
Geographic and record-keeping limits
This procedure is designed for US exchange-listed securities and SEC EDGAR. Exchanges in other countries use different notices, forms and effectiveness rules. Exchange status pages and individual corporate actions can change, so check the official records close to the date on which you need the answer.
Save a copy of the exchange page, SEC filing, issuer announcement and broker response with the dates you accessed them. That file gives you an auditable record of what was known at the time and helps resolve discrepancies between public records and your account.
