Start by identifying who has the redemption right. With a U.S. Series EE or I savings bond, you (the owner) normally may cash it after holding it for one year, but cashing it before five years forfeits the last three months of interest. With a callable corporate or municipal bond, the issuer—not usually the investor—may redeem the bond before maturity under the call provisions in its prospectus, official statement, indenture, or other governing document. Treasury marketable securities held through a broker follow still different account and security terms.
The bond’s series or type, issue date, maturity date, registration, form (paper or electronic), custodian, and governing documents determine the answer. Use the procedure below before assuming that a stated maturity date means you must wait until then—or that you can demand repayment now.

What “redeemed early” can mean
The phrase describes two opposite actions:
| Situation | Who acts? | What happens? |
|---|---|---|
| Owner cashes a savings bond | The bondholder requests payment | The Treasury pays the eligible redemption value. Holding-period rules and, for an EE or I bond held less than five years, an interest penalty apply. |
| Issuer calls a callable bond | The issuer exercises a contractual right | The issuer pays the stated call price, usually plus accrued interest, and future interest payments end. The holder generally cannot force the call simply because cash is wanted. |
| Holder sells a marketable security | The holder places a sale through a broker or other market | This is a secondary-market sale, not necessarily a redemption by the issuer. The price can be above or below face value and depends on market conditions and the security’s terms. |
Do not apply the Series EE/I savings-bond rule to a Treasury note, Treasury bond, Treasury Inflation-Protected Security (TIPS), corporate bond, or municipal bond without checking that security’s terms.

How to check a Series EE or Series I savings bond
Confirm the ordinary one-year eligibility rule
The Treasury’s standard rule is that you can cash an EE or I savings bond after you have owned it for one year. A bond normally cannot be cashed during its first 12 months. Treasury describes limited exceptions for certain financial-hardship situations and for bonds affected by specified disasters; eligibility depends on the particular series, issue date, owner, and circumstances. Confirm an exception with Treasury before submitting a redemption request rather than assuming that a personal cash need qualifies.
Apply the five-year interest penalty
If an EE or I bond is cashed before it has been held for five years, the redemption value excludes the last three months of interest. Treasury charges no separate redemption fee. The penalty is an interest forfeiture, so compare the value shown with and without those three months when deciding whether to wait.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| When you cash an EE or I bond | Result under the general Treasury rule |
|---|---|
| Before 12 months | Not ordinarily eligible; only limited Treasury-recognized exceptions may change this. |
| After 12 months but before five years | Eligible to cash, with the last three months of interest forfeited. |
| After five years | Eligible to cash without the three-month early-cashing interest penalty. |
| At or before 30 years | Interest accrues according to the bond’s rules until redemption or maturity; EE and I bonds reach final maturity after 30 years. |
These are the cited U.S. Treasury savings-bond rules, not a rule for every historical savings-bond series or every type of bond. Check the specific issue if you have an older or unusual bond.

Check a paper EE or I bond
Use the Treasury’s Savings Bond Calculator to estimate the current value, including the effect of the three-month penalty when applicable. Then ask a bank whether it cashes savings bonds, what dollar limits apply, which identification it requires, and whether all registered owners must appear. Banks are not required to provide every redemption service.
If a bank will not cash the bond, follow Treasury’s current mail-in process and form instructions. Submit the correctly completed form, the original paper bond, and the identification or certification requested by Treasury. Keep a photocopy or scan of the bond and the mailing evidence. Do not mail a bond until you have verified the current address and document requirements on Treasury’s official cashing instructions.

Check the value and timing before submitting
Compare three items: the cash you need, the value after any three-month interest forfeiture, and the interest you would receive by waiting. EE and I bonds earn interest for up to 30 years; waiting can increase value, but a cash need may outweigh additional interest. Record the redemption date because it affects the interest reported for tax purposes.
How to check a callable corporate or municipal bond
Find the controlling document
Search the bond’s prospectus, official statement, indenture, trust agreement, or supplemental terms for headings such as Redemption, Optional Redemption, Sinking Fund, or Extraordinary Redemption. For a bond held through a broker, request the issue document if it is not available in the account’s research area. The governing document—not a generic description of callable bonds—controls the actual right.
Identify the call type
| Provision | How it works | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Optional redemption | The issuer may choose to redeem under stated terms, often after a no-call period. | First call date, subsequent dates or windows, call price, premium schedule, notice, and any conditions. |
| Sinking-fund redemption | The issuer redeems some or all bonds according to a scheduled amount or method. | Annual or periodic schedule, selection method, percentage or principal amount, and payment price. |
| Extraordinary redemption | A specified event permits redemption outside the ordinary schedule. | Events such as damage or destruction of a financed project, insurance proceeds, condemnation, tax changes, or other issue-specific triggers. |
Municipal bonds often include a call after a specified period, while corporate issues can have several optional, sinking-fund, or extraordinary provisions. Do not infer that one provision applies to all bonds from the same issuer.

Extract the six facts that determine whether a call is possible
- First eligible date: the earliest date the issuer can redeem under the provision.
- Schedule or window: later dates, annual periods, or a date range during which a call may occur.
- Call price: the principal amount, any premium, and whether accrued interest is added.
- Notice requirements: how and when the issuer or trustee must notify holders and where notices are published.
- Conditions: refinancing, fund availability, sinking-fund amounts, project events, tax events, or other prerequisites.
- Partial-call mechanics: whether only part of an issue can be called and how selected bonds are chosen.
A callable bond may be redeemed before its maturity date, but the issuer generally decides whether to exercise the right. A holder who wants cash usually must sell in the secondary market, ask the custodian about any issuer tender offer, or wait for a scheduled payment; the call clause itself normally does not give the holder a right to demand repayment.

Understand the economic effect of a call
An issuer may call a bond when market interest rates fall and refinancing would be cheaper. If called, you receive the contractual call price, usually face value or a stated premium, plus accrued interest when the terms provide for it. Future coupon payments stop, and you may have to reinvest at lower prevailing rates. Callable bonds often offer a higher stated return than otherwise similar noncallable bonds as compensation for this call risk, but that general market observation does not predict whether a particular issuer will call or what return you will realize.
How Treasury marketable securities differ
Treasury notes, bonds, bills, TIPS, and other marketable securities are not Series EE or I savings bonds. The one-year savings-bond eligibility rule and the three-month interest forfeiture do not automatically apply.
TreasuryDirect explains redemption at maturity for marketable securities. If a bank, broker, or dealer holds the security, contact that institution about redemption options, transfer procedures, maturity payments, and whether the account permits a sale before maturity. Ask specifically whether the proposed transaction is:
- scheduled repayment at maturity;
- a secondary-market sale before maturity;
- a transfer to another account; or
- an issuer action under a special term.
A market sale can produce more or less than face value because prices move with interest rates, credit conditions, liquidity, and the remaining term. The institution can provide the current bid, settlement date, commissions or spreads, and any account restrictions. Do not describe that sale as an early redemption unless the issuer is actually paying the security off under its terms.

Tax and recordkeeping checks
Treasury says EE and I bonds earn interest for up to 30 years. Under the described deferral option, interest is generally reported when received or at maturity rather than annually; a holder receives Form 1099-INT for reportable interest. The exact reporting result depends on the bond, ownership, prior elections, and the tax year.
- Save the redemption confirmation, payment date, value calculation, and any statement showing the three-month interest adjustment.
- For a paper bond, retain a copy of the signed form and the bond’s serial and issue details.
- For a brokerage-held security, keep the trade confirmation, cost-basis information, accrued-interest allocation, and settlement statement.
- Use current Treasury and Internal Revenue Service guidance, or a qualified tax professional, for personal federal, state, and local tax treatment.
Do not assume that the tax treatment of a savings-bond redemption is the same as that of a corporate or municipal bond sale or call.
A decision checklist before you act
- Classify the instrument. Mark it as EE/I savings bond, Treasury marketable security, corporate bond, municipal bond, or another type.
- Identify the party with the right. Is this your request to cash, an issuer’s call option, a scheduled sinking-fund payment, or a market sale?
- Verify dates. Check issue date, one-year eligibility where applicable, five-year penalty threshold, first call date, maturity, and any redemption window.
- Calculate the payment. Include the three-month interest forfeiture for an eligible EE/I bond held under five years, the stated call price and accrued interest for a call, or the market bid and transaction costs for a sale.
- Read conditions and notice rules. Confirm hardship or disaster documentation, call triggers, notice periods, partial-redemption limits, and account requirements.
- Confirm where the bond is held. Use TreasuryDirect for electronic savings bonds, a qualified bank or Treasury mail process for paper savings bonds, and the custodian’s process for intermediary-held securities.
- Preserve records. Keep confirmations and tax documents before closing the account or discarding paper records.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Confusing maturity with a call date
Maturity is the scheduled end date. A call date is the earliest date an issuer may exercise a contractual redemption right. Recheck the call schedule instead of using the maturity date as the only answer.
Assuming every bond can be cashed by its owner
That assumption fits the owner-redemption model for eligible EE/I savings bonds, not most callable corporate or municipal bonds. If the document gives the issuer the option, ask the custodian about selling or wait for an issuer action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ignoring the holding period
An EE/I bond held for less than one year is ordinarily ineligible, and one held from one to five years loses the last three months of interest when cashed. Check the issue date before requesting payment.

Using the wrong document
A product page or account label may omit special call provisions. Obtain the issue-specific prospectus, official statement, indenture, or supplemental terms and use its definitions and schedules.
Treating a broker sale as an issuer redemption
A sale before maturity can occur even when the issuer has no early-redemption obligation. Ask for the transaction type, price, settlement date, and costs in writing.
Sending a paper bond without checking requirements
Bank limits, identification rules, signatures, forms, and mailing instructions vary. Verify the current Treasury or bank process and keep a copy before mailing an original certificate.
When the document or account does not give a clear answer
Escalate in this order:
- Ask the custodian for the exact security description and governing document.
- Search the document for “redemption,” “call,” “optional,” “sinking fund,” and “extraordinary.”
- Ask the trustee, paying agent, or issuer’s investor-relations contact which provision applies to your CUSIP or certificate.
- For an EE/I bond, contact Treasury using the current instructions for the relevant paper or electronic form.
- Before acting, obtain the expected payment, applicable penalty or premium, tax form, and settlement timing.
If the bond is inherited, jointly owned, held by a trust or estate, subject to a legal restriction, or affected by a disaster, ownership and documentation rules can change the process. Resolve those issues with the custodian or an appropriate professional before submitting a redemption request.
