How to Check Whether 5G Is Available in Your Area and on Your Phone

To check 5G properly, verify two separate things: whether a network is reported at the exact places you use, and whether your specific phone, plan and settings can use that network. In the United States, search your address on the FCC National Broadband Map under Mobile Broadband, compare providers and 5G map thresholds, then check the carrier’s own address map. Finally, confirm your phone model’s compatible bands, 5G plan and settings.

Maps are screening tools, not guarantees of indoor reception or a particular speed. The FCC’s mobile map represents modeled outdoor or in-vehicle availability and does not show indoor coverage. A 5G icon also reflects carrier configuration rather than an independent measurement.

What you need to check

A reliable answer requires four checks, in this order:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place: Is 5G reported at your home, workplace, commute or destination?
  2. Network: Which provider and 5G layer is reported there, and under what map threshold?
  3. Device: Does your exact phone model support that provider’s 5G bands?
  4. Account: Does your plan, SIM or eSIM, account provisioning and phone setting allow 5G?

Passing only one check proves very little. A phone can be 5G-capable but incompatible with a carrier’s bands, or a carrier can report coverage where your indoor signal is too weak to use comfortably.

Start with the exact locations that matter

Do not rely on a city-wide “5G available” label. List the places where service affects your work, safety or monthly phone decision:

  • Your street address and the parts of the home where you use data.
  • Your workplace, school or regular second location.
  • Key points along your commute, especially where you make calls or use navigation.
  • Frequent travel destinations, if you are considering a carrier change.

Coverage can change over a short distance, and a map’s outdoor result cannot tell you how a building’s walls, windows or floor level will affect reception. Checking each important address prevents an expensive switch based on a broad regional claim.

Use the FCC National Broadband Map (United States)

The FCC Broadband Data Collection Help Center’s guide, updated May 15, 2025, explains how to use the National Broadband Map for mobile coverage comparisons. The instructions below apply to the United States.

Open the mobile view and search an address

  1. Open the FCC National Broadband Map.
  2. Select Mobile Broadband, rather than the fixed-broadband view.
  3. Search your street address. If the address is not listed, enter the town and state, then zoom to the location.
  4. Use the provider controls to see which companies report service at that spot.

The FCC says the Mobile Broadband tab displays provider-reported 3G, 4G and 5G coverage. An address search is more useful than reading the color of an entire county because it ties the result to a location you actually use.

Choose a 5G threshold

The FCC’s mobile map offers two 5G-NR modeled minimum-speed categories:

Map category Modeled minimum download Modeled minimum upload What it means
Lower 5G threshold At least 7 Mbps At least 1 Mbps A provider models the area as meeting these minimums under the FCC’s prescribed assumptions.
Higher 5G threshold At least 35 Mbps At least 3 Mbps A stricter modeled category, not a promise that your phone will achieve these speeds.

These figures come from the FCC’s “Formatting Mobile Broadband Availability Coverage Maps” guidance, updated July 31, 2025. They describe map categories, not a guaranteed result at your desk, at a particular time or on a particular handset. Congestion, signal strength, spectrum, building materials and device capabilities can all change actual performance.

Compare the environment setting

The FCC map distinguishes modeled outdoor stationary coverage from in-vehicle mobile coverage. Select the environment that best matches the question you are asking:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use outdoor stationary when you want to know whether a person standing outside should be able to connect.
  • Use in-vehicle mobile when you are evaluating service while traveling in a vehicle.

The FCC states that its reported mobile coverage represents where consumers should be able to connect outdoors or in a moving vehicle and does not show indoor coverage. Treat a strong color on the map as a reason to investigate further, not as evidence that every room will work.

  • US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.

Compare providers at the same address

Keep the address, threshold and environment constant while switching providers. Otherwise you may compare different assumptions without realizing it. Record:

  • The provider shown.
  • Whether the result is 5G or only 4G/3G.
  • The selected 7/1 or 35/3 threshold.
  • Whether the layer is outdoor stationary or in-vehicle.
  • The map’s current data-as-of date, if displayed.

Coverage data and network builds change. Save the date of your comparison if you are making a long-term phone or plan decision.

Check the carrier’s own coverage map

An independent map is useful for comparison, but the carrier’s map provides the carrier-specific address result and network labels you will see when checking eligibility. For example, the carrier coverage-map page distinguishes 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G and 4G LTE and lets users check coverage by address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the same address through the carrier map

  1. Open the carrier’s current coverage map.
  2. Enter the complete street address, including city, state and ZIP code when requested.
  3. Zoom in far enough to see the property and nearby streets.
  4. Note which 5G label appears and whether the map switches to LTE indoors or at the edge of the property.
  5. Read the map legend and any availability or device caveats before treating the result as a decision.

Carrier labels are not standardized. One provider’s premium 5G label may refer to a higher-frequency layer, while another may use a different name. Compare the underlying coverage and compatibility information, not the marketing label alone.

Understand what a 5G map can and cannot tell you

What a map can establish

  • Whether a provider reports a 5G layer at a selected location.
  • How the FCC classifies that location under its 5G speed threshold and environment setting.
  • Which providers report mobile coverage at the address.
  • Whether a carrier’s own map identifies a particular 5G tier in that area.

What a map cannot establish

  • Indoor coverage in your bedroom, basement, office or apartment.
  • Your exact download or upload speed at a particular moment.
  • Reliability during congestion, storms or large events.
  • Whether your specific phone supports the provider’s necessary bands.
  • Whether your plan or account is provisioned for 5G.

The FCC map is modeled and provider-reported. The 35/3 category, for example, means the area is modeled to meet at least 35 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up under the defined assumptions; it is not a personal speed guarantee.

Check whether your exact phone supports the network

“5G phone” is not a complete compatibility test. Manufacturers sell regional and carrier variants, and a handset may support some 5G bands but not the bands used where you live.

Find the exact model identifier

Use the phone’s settings, original box or purchase record to identify the full model number, not just a family name such as “Phone 12” or “Galaxy.” Regional suffixes and storage variants can have different radio support. Then use the phone maker’s specifications and the carrier’s compatibility checker for that exact identifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the carrier’s relevant bands

The carrier compatibility page warns that not all devices support both high-band and mid-band service. It identifies bands n77, n260 and n261 as necessary for access to all of that carrier’s 5G Ultra Wideband network. This is a carrier-specific example, not a universal list for every network. Check the bands named for the provider and plan you are considering.

A phone may connect to a carrier’s lower 5G layer while missing a faster or higher-frequency layer. That is still different from being fully compatible with the carrier’s entire 5G footprint.

iPhone requirements

Apple Support’s guidance, published May 13, 2026, states that 5G service requires an iPhone 12 model or later, a provider that supports 5G and a 5G plan. Those are minimum family and account requirements; they do not override the carrier’s band compatibility rules or guarantee indoor service.

Android phones

There is no single Android menu path that applies consistently across manufacturers and software versions. Use your phone maker’s model-specific support page or the carrier’s compatibility instructions to identify the model, supported bands and preferred network setting. Avoid assuming that a menu option labeled “5G” proves the phone is compatible with every carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the plan, SIM and account

A compatible radio can still remain on LTE if the account is not enabled for 5G. Before buying a phone or changing providers, verify:

  • The plan explicitly includes 5G access.
  • The SIM or eSIM is supported and correctly activated.
  • The line is provisioned for the provider’s intended 5G tier.
  • Your account is in good standing and has no data or roaming restriction that affects service.
  • The phone is approved for that carrier and region.

Apple’s requirements specifically include a 5G plan and a 5G-supporting provider. Other manufacturers and carriers may describe plan eligibility differently, so use the current account and device guidance for your exact combination.

Check 5G settings on an iPhone

On an iPhone 12 or later, Apple documents this path: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. The available choices are:

Setting Behavior Trade-off
5G Auto Uses 5G when Apple determines it will provide a noticeably better experience, and can switch to LTE otherwise. Balances 5G use and battery consumption.
5G On Uses 5G whenever it is available. May reduce battery life.
LTE Uses LTE even when 5G is available. Useful for troubleshooting or conserving resources, but it prevents normal 5G use.

Menu wording can vary by region and carrier. If the options are missing, that can indicate a plan, carrier or device limitation rather than a coverage problem.

Interpret the 5G icon correctly

Apple says the iPhone 5G icon means the provider’s 5G network is available and the phone can connect over it. Labels such as 5G+, 5G UW, 5G UC and 5GA can identify a provider’s higher-frequency or specially branded 5G network.

The icon is not an independent field measurement. Apple says the display follows carrier configuration and, rarely, can appear when 5G coverage is unavailable. Conversely, the absence of a 5G icon does not prove that no 5G signal exists nearby: the phone may be using LTE under 5G Auto, the plan may not be enabled, or the device may not support the local layer.

Test real service when the decision matters

If you are choosing between carriers, test at the places and times you actually use data. A practical test plan is:

  1. Run the same basic tasks on each service, such as loading a work site, joining a video call or streaming a short clip.
  2. Test indoors and outdoors separately.
  3. Test during your busiest normal period, not only late at night.
  4. Repeat at your workplace or commute route if those locations drive the decision.
  5. Record whether the phone shows 5G, LTE or no service, but judge the result by reliability and task completion rather than the icon alone.

Do not present one test as a universal ranking. A result belongs to that phone, location, time and account configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when the map and your phone disagree

The map shows 5G, but the phone stays on LTE

  1. Confirm that your exact phone model supports the carrier’s local 5G bands.
  2. Verify that the plan includes 5G and that the SIM or eSIM is provisioned correctly.
  3. On iPhone, check Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and make sure LTE is not selected.
  4. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off so the phone registers with the network again.
  5. Move outdoors and retest. The FCC map does not establish indoor coverage.
  6. If 5G still does not appear, contact the carrier; Apple gives the same escalation advice for iPhone users.

The phone shows 5G, but performance is poor

  • Check whether you are indoors, behind dense construction or at the edge of the mapped area.
  • Compare performance at another time to identify congestion.
  • Check whether the phone switched between 5G layers or LTE while you were testing.
  • Compare the result with the FCC threshold you selected, remembering that a modeled category is not a speed promise.

Your address is missing from the FCC map

Enter the town and state, then zoom to the location, as the FCC guide recommends. If the map still appears inaccurate, its mobile challenge process instructs users to run the challenge test outdoors or in a vehicle, not indoors. Keep notes about the location, date, device and observed result so the report is specific.

How to decide whether you need a new phone

Do not buy a replacement merely because a map shows 5G. First identify the failed check:

Finding Likely next step
No 5G is reported at the places you use Compare another provider or keep the current service; a new phone cannot create coverage that is not available.
5G is reported, but your phone lacks the required bands Consider a carrier-compatible 5G phone only if the coverage and plan justify the cost.
Your phone supports the bands, but the plan is LTE-only Compare the cost and terms of a 5G-enabled plan before changing hardware.
Maps show coverage but indoor service fails Test outdoors, check building-specific behavior and ask the carrier about remedies before replacing the phone.
5G works but does not improve your normal tasks Keep the less expensive setup unless the additional performance has a specific value for you.

The financially sensible sequence is coverage first, compatibility second, plan third and hardware last. That prevents spending on a phone that cannot solve the actual limitation.

Checking 5G outside the United States

The FCC workflow is U.S.-specific. In another country, use the national communications regulator’s coverage resource and the carrier’s own compatibility guidance. The exact map categories, terminology, bands, plan rules and challenge procedures vary by country, so do not transfer the FCC’s 7/1 or 35/3 categories or its environment labels to another jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable 5G availability checklist

  • Search every important address, not only the city name.
  • Select Mobile Broadband on the FCC map in the United States.
  • Compare providers at the same 5G threshold and environment setting.
  • Read the map’s data date and remember that outdoor or in-vehicle modeling does not show indoor coverage.
  • Run the address through the carrier’s own map and note its network labels.
  • Identify your phone’s exact model number and check carrier-band compatibility.
  • Confirm a 5G plan, supported SIM or eSIM and account provisioning.
  • Review the phone’s network setting; on iPhone, choose among 5G Auto, 5G On and LTE.
  • Test at the locations and times that matter before committing to a new plan or device.
  • If results conflict, retest outdoors, toggle Airplane Mode and contact the carrier after checking the account and settings.
