A no-cost EMI is worthwhile only when its complete outflow is no higher than the price you would pay immediately. Before accepting, add every installment, processing or convenience fee, applicable GST, and any other required charge. Then subtract a merchant discount or cashback only if the offer states its amount, eligibility and credit date clearly. Compare that result with the immediate-payment price after its discounts.
What “no-cost EMI” actually means
“No-cost” usually describes how the interest is funded, not a promise that the transaction has no charges. In a common arrangement, the lender calculates interest and the merchant gives a discount of roughly the same amount, or promises cashback, so the advertised installment total appears close to the product’s price. Merchant-funded discounts are described in Razorpay’s merchant documentation; an issuer-specific explanation appears on HDFC Bank’s EasyEMI page.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has historically warned that low- or zero-interest consumer-durable advances funded by adjusting a manufacturer’s or dealer’s discount can obscure the applicable rate and distort pricing. Its collected customer-service guidance says banks should refrain from such arrangements because of their transparency concerns. That older guidance is not, by itself, a complete statement of current law, but it explains why the label should never replace an all-in calculation. Read the RBI customer-service guidance alongside the current lender terms for the specific offer.
Why the label is not enough
The same product can show different prices depending on whether you pay immediately or choose EMI. A cash discount may disappear when you select financing. A cashback may arrive weeks later, require a particular card or minimum transaction, or be forfeited after cancellation. Processing, convenience, documentation or other charges can remain payable even when the interest is offset. The checkout disclosure, repayment schedule and lender’s terms—not the promotional headline—determine your cost.

Calculate the two outflows
Use two separate totals. Do not compare the installment amount with the sticker price or compare a delayed cashback with money saved today.
No-cost EMI total outflow
Write the calculation as:
EMI total outflow = (installment amount × number of installments) + upfront fees + separately billed fees + applicable taxes + other required charges − qualifying merchant discount or cashback.
Include a lender interest amount if it is shown, even when a merchant discount is intended to offset it. If a fee or tax is charged outside the installments, add it separately. Count a discount or cashback as a reduction only after checking the conditions and timing.
Immediate-payment total outflow
Use:
Immediate-payment outflow = cash price after immediate-payment discounts + charges that apply to that payment method.
Record the price actually available to you at checkout. A discount that is available only for a different card, wallet or payment method does not belong in your comparison unless you can use that method.
Keep the comparison on the same basis
| Component | What to record | Why it changes the answer |
|---|---|---|
| Cash price | Amount payable immediately after eligible discounts | This is the benchmark you give up when selecting EMI. |
| Installments | Installment amount and exact number of installments | The displayed monthly figure is not the total. |
| Interest and offset | Interest shown by the lender, plus merchant discount or cashback amount | An offset can make interest appear free without removing other charges. |
| Fees | Processing, convenience, documentation, foreclosure, cancellation or other required fees | These can make an advertised no-cost plan more expensive than cash. |
| Tax | GST or another tax shown on interest or fees | Tax treatment depends on the charge and the transaction. |
| Timing and conditions | When a discount is applied or cashback is credited, and the qualifying rules | A conditional or delayed benefit is not the same as an immediate price reduction. |

Capture the immediate-payment price
At the same product page and delivery address, note the price for paying immediately. Include a cash or instant discount only if it is available with the payment method you would use. Save a screenshot or download the order summary so the reference price cannot be confused with a later list price.

Record the complete EMI schedule
Write down the principal, installment amount, number of installments, first debit date and final debit date. Multiply the installment amount by the number of installments yourself. If the lender provides an amortisation or repayment schedule, retain it; a rounded monthly display can hide a different final debit.

Identify the interest-offset mechanism
Look for wording such as merchant discount, instant discount, bank discount or cashback. Record the amount, whether it is deducted at checkout or credited later, and whether it applies to the product price, interest, or a particular card transaction. An interest line in the lender’s schedule and a matching merchant discount are not automatically proof that every other charge has been removed.
-
List every fee and tax
Check the payment page, card statement terms and lender schedule for processing, convenience, documentation, platform, mandate or other charges. Note whether each is included in the installments or billed upfront. Record GST or another applicable tax exactly as displayed. Never assume that a fee is covered by the phrase “no-cost.”
-
Test the benefit’s conditions
Check the eligible card, minimum order value, product or merchant restrictions, validity period, required registration and cashback credit date. Read what happens if the order is cancelled, partially returned or refunded. A benefit that can be reversed may not be available for your full holding period.
-
Calculate both totals
Use the formulas above, keeping the currency and rounding consistent. Treat a delayed benefit as a reduction only when you can meet its conditions and the credit timing is acceptable to you. If a required amount is not disclosed, leave it out of neither total: ask for it before proceeding.

Compare the difference and the risk
Subtract the immediate-payment outflow from the EMI total outflow. A positive result is the additional cost of financing. Also consider whether a missed debit, early closure or cancellation could remove the discount or add a fee; those contingencies belong in the decision even when the initial arithmetic looks equal.
Worked example: why a “zero-interest” headline can still cost more
The following figures are illustrative, not a quote from a lender. Assume a product is available for ₹60,000, with an immediate-payment discount of ₹2,000. The cash outflow is therefore ₹58,000.
| Item | Illustrative amount |
|---|---|
| EMI schedule | 12 installments × ₹5,000 = ₹60,000 |
| Processing fee | ₹999, billed separately |
| GST shown on that fee | ₹180, using the tax amount displayed for this example |
| Cashback | ₹2,000, credited after 90 days only if the stated conditions are met |
| EMI outflow before cashback | ₹61,179 |
| EMI outflow after qualifying cashback | ₹59,179 |
| Immediate-payment outflow | ₹58,000 |
If the cashback is earned, the EMI still costs ₹1,179 more than paying immediately. If the conditions are not met, the difference is ₹3,179. The installment amount alone—₹5,000 per month—does not reveal either result.
How to read the disclosure and lender terms
Distinguish the product price from the financed principal
The financed principal may differ from the product price because a discount, down payment, shipping charge or other item is applied separately. Confirm what amount the lender is actually financing and whether the first installment includes an additional adjustment.

An instant discount reduces the amount charged at checkout. Cashback normally requires you to pay the scheduled amount first and wait for a later credit. Check the destination of the credit, expected date, expiry and reversal rules. A future credit should not be treated as cash in hand when comparing affordability.
Read fee descriptions, not just the total
RBI’s digital-lending publication describes processing fees applying even to a no-cost EMI loan in its sample and includes GST on interest in that context. Those are examples from the described sample, not universal prices. Read the RBI publication and then use the fee schedule attached to your transaction. HDFC Bank’s EasyEMI information likewise illustrates that processing fees vary by product or merchant; one issuer’s terms cannot be applied to another lender.
Understand the tax treatment shown for the transaction
Do not infer tax from the phrase “interest-free.” The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) GST FAQ distinguishes exempt interest or discount from charges collected over and above interest or discount, which can be taxable consideration. The applicable treatment depends on the actual charge and current rules. Use the tax line displayed by the lender or merchant, and ask for clarification if it is missing.

Look for an all-in cost
RBI’s circular on disclosure of processing fees and charges says: “Further, the banks must inform ‘all-in-cost’ to the customer to enable him to compare the rates charged with other sources of finance.” The circular is dated November 25, 2008; its comparison principle remains a useful way to read a modern checkout, while the current offer’s terms control the amount you will pay. See the RBI circular.

When more than one plan is available, place the offers side by side using the same product and payment date. A plan with a lower installment can still have a higher total because it runs for longer or carries a larger fee.

Choose based on total outflow and terms, not on the lowest monthly number. If both totals are close, an immediate discount is generally easier to value than a conditional credit because its amount is known at the time of purchase.

Eligibility and tenure
Approval, card type, credit limit, merchant category, product selection and available tenure can vary. A promotional plan shown before login may disappear after the lender checks eligibility. Recalculate using the plan actually offered to your account.
Late or failed payment
A missed debit can trigger late charges, interest, collection costs or a reversal of the promotional benefit. The amount and grace period are lender-specific. Read the card or loan agreement rather than assuming that “no-cost” limits these consequences.
Early closure or prepayment
Some lenders charge a foreclosure or prepayment fee; some promotions require the account to remain open for a stated period. Ask how an early closure affects both the outstanding principal and the merchant discount or cashback.

Cancellation, return or partial refund
With EMI, a merchant refund and a lender reversal may occur on different schedules. Confirm whether interest already billed, processing fees, GST or a cashback credit will be returned. A partial return can leave a different financed balance from the one you originally calculated.
What the RBI figures do—and do not—tell you
An RBI publication surfaced as “Regulatory Innovations in Digital Lending” reports that around 50% of consumer-durable loans disbursed by scheduled commercial banks in its publication context carried interest rates below 13%. It also describes interest of 0.4% to 3.2% of product price depending on the EMI plan in a specific sample. The available publication page does not establish a publication year for those figures. They are not the share of no-cost EMI offers, a current market rate, or a universal cost range. Use them as context for why a lender can show an interest amount even when a merchant advertises an offset—not as a substitute for your transaction’s schedule.
If the checkout does not show enough information
Do not accept an offer you cannot price. Ask the merchant or lender for a written repayment schedule showing:
Recommended Free Tools
- financed principal and installment amount;
- number and dates of installments;
- interest, processing and every other required fee;
- GST or other applicable tax on each charge;
- merchant discount or cashback amount, eligibility and credit date; and
- late-payment, cancellation, refund and early-closure consequences.
Keep the response with the order confirmation. If the representative gives a monthly figure but cannot provide the all-in amount, compare using only the amounts you can verify and postpone the purchase until the missing terms are supplied.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Comparing EMI with the list price: use the best immediate-payment price that you can actually obtain.
- Adding only the installments: include upfront and separately billed fees and taxes.
- Assuming all cashback is guaranteed: verify eligibility, timing and reversal conditions before subtracting it.
- Using one bank’s fee as a market rule: apply only the lender and merchant terms attached to your offer.
- Ignoring a different tenure: multiply the actual installment by the actual number of debits.
- Forgetting payment-method charges: include charges that apply to the card, mandate or method required for EMI.
- Overlooking returns or early closure: read the consequences before relying on a discount that may be reversed.
- Accepting an undocumented promise: save the checkout disclosure and request a complete schedule before confirmation.
Make the decision
Proceed only when you can state both totals in rupees and explain every difference between them. If the EMI total is higher, the premium is the price of spreading payments; decide whether that liquidity is worth it. If the totals appear equal, confirm that no fee, tax, delayed benefit or cancellation condition has been left out. A “no-cost” label is a useful starting description, but the all-in calculation is the purchase decision.
