The benchmark is independently administered by ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA), formed in an auction at 12:00 London time for unallocated silver delivered in London, and published in US dollars. Next, open the seller’s quote for the exact coin or bar, quantity and delivery method. Compare that complete checkout amount with the reference shown at roughly the same time. The benchmark is a market reference—not a promise that a retail product will be offered at that amount.
This process prevents the most common mistake: treating a futures marker, a delayed display or a dealer’s retail price as if all three were the same “spot price.”

A five-minute way to check silver before buying
- Identify the source. Write down whether the number is the LBMA Silver Price, a futures-derived marker, another clearly identified market quote or a retailer’s buy/sell quote.
- Record the update time. Note the displayed date, time zone and whether the display says real-time, intraday or delayed. If no latency is stated, do not assume the number is live.
- Read the basis. Confirm the currency, unit and market represented. The LBMA benchmark concerns unallocated silver delivered in London; a futures marker is tied to a contract and its market conventions.
- Capture the complete offer. For the exact item and quantity, record the product price, shipping or pickup terms, taxes, payment charges and any other checkout line items shown by the seller.
- Compare like with like. Align the timestamps, currency, unit, quantity and market basis before calculating a difference. Recheck just before paying because reference prices and futures quotes can move.
The result is a transparent comparison: a recognized market reference on one side and the actual delivered cost of your chosen product on the other.

What “silver spot price” can mean
“Spot” is not a single universal screen. Different services use the phrase for different instruments, publication schedules and delivery conventions. Name the source every time you write down a number.

LBMA Silver Price: the benchmark reference
LBMA states that “The LBMA Silver Price is administered independently by ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA).” ICE describes the benchmark as the price for unallocated silver delivered in London. Its auction takes place at 12:00 London time, and the final auction price is published as the benchmark in US dollars.
That description tells you what the number represents: a standardized wholesale market reference under London delivery conventions. It does not describe a particular minted coin, cast bar, shipping destination or retail checkout.
CME silver London marker: a futures-derived reference
CME’s silver London marker is calculated from the volume-weighted average of trades in the front-cycle month of the COMEX Silver futures contract during 12:00–12:02 prevailing London time. If no trades occur in that window, CME uses bids and offers instead.
This is a futures-derived marker, not the LBMA auction benchmark. The contract month, trading conditions and fallback method matter. A website may place both numbers under a “spot” heading, but you should preserve the label used by the underlying source.
London spot and COMEX futures are different markets
CME describes its Spot Spread as a spread between London Spot futures and COMEX futures. That terminology is a reminder to identify the market and contract behind any futures quote. Do not silently relabel a futures number as the LBMA auction benchmark or as the amount a dealer will charge at checkout.
A retailer’s quote is a product price
A seller’s number applies to a specific item: for example, a stated coin or bar, a quantity, a currency and delivery or pickup terms. It may include costs that do not appear in a market reference. The only reliable retail comparison is the seller’s itemized quote for the product you intend to buy.

- Auction time: the auction runs at 12:00 London time.
- Delivery basis and currency: it represents unallocated silver delivered in London and is published in US dollars.
“Unallocated” means the benchmark is not a quote for a numbered retail bar held for you. It is a market reference under the London market’s delivery framework. Use it to orient yourself, then assess the separate costs and terms of your physical purchase.
Check the timestamp and latency before trusting a number
Two displays can show different values without either being wrong if they update at different times or use different instruments. Make a small record whenever you compare prices:
- Source name and exact price label.
- Date and clock time shown on the page or feed.
- Time zone, especially when a London time is being compared with a US time.
- Whether the data is described as real-time, intraday or delayed.
- Currency and unit, including whether the display is per troy ounce.
IBA describes benchmark data as available on different latency bases through IBA or redistribution partners. A consumer page’s visual label alone does not prove that its value is real-time. If the page does not state its delay, record that the latency is unstated rather than treating the quote as current.
The LBMA auction’s 12:00 London time and CME’s 12:00–12:02 London-time calculation window are methodology times, not guarantees that either number remains unchanged afterward. A quote captured minutes apart can differ because the underlying market moved or because one display is delayed.
Compare the reference with the exact checkout quote
Use the seller’s final quote for the exact product and quantity. Preserve each line rather than copying only the headline price.
1. Define the metal amount
Read the product description for its stated fine-silver content and unit. Confirm whether the reference and the product use the same ounce convention. If the reference is quoted per troy ounce, convert the product’s stated fine content to troy ounces before multiplying. Do not substitute gross weight for fine-silver content when the product contains an alloy or another metal.
2. Convert the reference into a metal-value baseline
Use this worksheet:
metal-value baseline = reference price per troy ounce × fine-silver troy ounces in the item

Keep the reference currency unchanged until you have a documented exchange rate and a timestamp for that conversion. Mixing a US-dollar benchmark with a seller quote in another currency produces a meaningless difference.
3. Build the delivered-cost total
Copy the seller’s lines into a second calculation:
delivered cost = item price + stated shipping or delivery charge + applicable tax + payment charge − stated discount
Use the seller’s terms for the destination and delivery method you selected. A pickup quote and a shipped quote are not interchangeable, and a pre-tax display is not the same as the amount charged at payment.
4. Show the difference for this quote
For a transparent comparison, calculate:
difference = delivered cost − metal-value baseline
If you express it as a percentage, show the denominator:
difference percentage = difference ÷ metal-value baseline × 100

Label the result as the difference for that item, seller, destination and timestamp. It is not a universal silver premium. Official benchmark sources do not establish a standard retail premium, tax, shipping charge or payment fee.
A comparison worksheet you can reuse

Why a physical coin or bar can cost more than a benchmark
A benchmark describes a standardized market reference, while a physical product is manufactured, packaged and delivered. The seller’s quote can therefore include separate amounts for the product’s fabrication and handling, the seller’s margin, distribution, payment processing, shipping, tax and the specific item’s market demand. The official benchmark material does not establish a universal amount for any of those components.
Do not call the entire difference a “premium” unless you define what you included. If you subtract only the metal baseline from the item price, you have excluded shipping and tax. If you subtract the baseline from the final delivered total, your result includes every checkout charge. State which calculation you used.
Currency, quantity and delivery checks
Currency
The LBMA benchmark is published in US dollars. A seller may display another currency or convert at checkout. Record the conversion rate’s source and time if you convert; otherwise, compare values only after converting both to the same currency.
Quantity
A per-ounce reference must be scaled to the fine-silver amount in the whole order. Check whether the seller’s headline price is per item, per tube, per lot or for the entire quantity. Multiply only after you know which convention the page uses.
Delivery and pickup
Use one delivery assumption for both sides of your decision. A shipped order should include the shipping terms shown at checkout; a pickup order should not be compared with a shipped total. The benchmark’s London delivery basis is a market convention, not a promise of delivery to your address.

IBA says benchmark data is offered on different latency bases and through IBA or redistribution partners. LBMA says a licence is required for use of the benchmark in pricing, valuation, transactions and financial products. Those statements concern data rights and distribution; they do not tell you that a particular consumer display is free, current or licensed for republication.

For personal buying decisions, use the source’s own display and terms. If you publish, redistribute or embed benchmark values, check the applicable licence instead of assuming that a visible number may be copied into another service.
When a price comparison looks wrong
The two values differ sharply
First check the timestamps and latency labels. Then verify that one value is not a futures marker while the other is the LBMA benchmark, and confirm that both use the same currency and ounce convention. Finally, inspect the seller’s item, quantity and checkout lines. A mismatch in any one of those fields can explain a large apparent gap.
The page says “spot” but gives no methodology
Treat the label as incomplete. Look for the named benchmark, contract, update schedule and delivery or market basis. If those details are absent, record the value as an unidentified reference rather than presenting it as the LBMA benchmark.

Do not infer freshness from the number of decimal places or from a moving ticker. Use a source that states its update time or latency, or keep the value clearly qualified as time-uncertain and recheck with a documented timestamp before buying.
The dealer quote changes at checkout
Save the earlier quote and the final checkout screen, then compare the final amount with a newly captured reference. Note whether the change came from quantity, destination, tax, payment method, shipping or a market update. Use the amount actually charged for your decision.
The seller offers a buy price as well as a sell price
Record which side you are viewing. A dealer’s buyback quote answers a different question from the amount you pay to purchase a product. Neither should be relabeled as the LBMA auction benchmark.
Timing your final check
Because silver references and futures quotes are time-sensitive, perform the comparison again shortly before submitting payment. Capture the source label, timestamp, latency, currency and basis at that moment, then save the seller’s final itemized quote. This creates an auditable record of what you compared instead of relying on a number remembered from an earlier visit.
