What a Solana outage looks like

“Solana is down” can describe several different failures. The public status page may show a Mainnet Beta incident while your wallet still displays an old balance. A regional RPC provider can be unreachable even when validators are producing blocks normally. An application can also submit an invalid instruction to a healthy cluster. These cases require different fixes.

Do not retry repeatedly until you know which layer failed. A valid transaction may still land after a slow response, and a second submission can duplicate a state-changing action.

1. Check the official Solana Status page

1. Open the official Solana Status page and look for an incident affecting Mainnet Beta cluster, RPC nodes, regional RPC nodes, Explorer, or the region where your endpoint operates.
2. Read the incident start time, affected components, updates, and resolution status. Record the time if you are investigating a delayed payment or support case.
3. Review the historical incidents and the displayed 90-day uptime window. A green status indicator means the monitored services are operational; it does not prove that your particular RPC node is current or that your transaction is valid.
4. If an incident is active, avoid treating every pending transaction as an application bug. Preserve the signature, avoid unnecessary resubmissions, and wait for the service update or move read and write traffic to a healthy, independently operated endpoint.

If the page is green, continue with endpoint and transaction-level checks rather than assuming the network is unavailable.

2. Confirm the cluster and RPC endpoint

Solana has separate clusters. A wallet connected to devnet cannot see a mainnet balance, and a signature is meaningful only on the cluster where it was submitted. Confirm the network selector in the wallet and the RPC URL in the application configuration.

Check that every operation uses the intended cluster: fetching a recent blockhash, simulating, sending, reading signature status, and fetching transaction details. Mixing a blockhash from one cluster with a transaction sent to another produces confusing failures.

Recognize endpoint-level errors

• HTTP 429: the shared endpoint is rate-limiting requests. Reduce polling, add backoff, or use an endpoint with capacity appropriate for your traffic.
• HTTP 403: traffic may be blocked by endpoint policy, an invalid credential, or a prohibited origin. Check the endpoint configuration and provider rules.
• Timeouts or connection resets: test from another region or endpoint. A timeout does not reveal whether the transaction reached a validator.
• Successful but stale responses: a lagging node may answer quickly while reporting an old slot or missing a recent signature.

Run a basic cluster check with JSON-RPC. The returned slot is a health signal, not confirmation of any particular transaction:

Compare the slot and response time from your primary endpoint with a separately operated endpoint. A large slot gap or repeated timeout points to routing or RPC health rather than an invalid instruction.

3. Understand what a returned signature means

sendTransaction verifies the transaction’s signatures and, unless you disable it, runs preflight simulation before submitting the signed bytes. If the RPC accepts the request, it returns the first transaction signature. That response does not wait for a block and does not guarantee processing or confirmation by the cluster.

Use the signature as an identifier and query its state. A status of null means the node has no status at that moment; it can indicate that the transaction has not reached that node, has aged out of its search history, or was sent to another cluster.

When a status is available, inspect its confirmation state, slot, and error field. Then request full details:

getTransaction can show the slot, final error, logs, account balances before and after execution, and other metadata. A non-null transaction with an execution error was included but failed; a missing result is not proof of failure.

4. Keep preflight simulation enabled while diagnosing

Preflight simulation is the fastest way to expose instruction-level problems before broadcast. It can identify an incorrect account, a program-specific error, insufficient funds, invalid instruction data, or a transaction that would exceed compute limits. Save the simulation error and program logs rather than reducing them to a generic “failed” message.

skipPreflight only suppresses those checks. It cannot repair an invalid transaction, and it removes a useful diagnostic. If you must use it for a controlled production path, simulate separately and set the same commitment for simulation, blockhash retrieval, sending, and confirmation.

Common simulation outcomes

• Account or ownership error: verify every public key, account owner, writable flag, signer flag, and required associated account.
• Insufficient funds: include the transfer amount, the base fee, and any account-rent requirement in the balance calculation.
• Program error in logs: decode the program’s documented error code and inspect the instruction immediately before the failure.
• Blockhash not found during simulation: obtain a fresh blockhash and ensure the simulation node is using the same commitment as the node that supplied it.

5. Separate execution failure from transport failure

A transaction can be included in a block and still fail while its instructions execute. Solana documentation states that fees are still charged on failure. The documented base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature; this is a protocol fee figure, not a promise that your total cost is limited to that amount when additional signatures or application-specific costs apply.

Use getTransaction to distinguish these cases:

• Transport or RPC uncertainty: the client timed out, returned an HTTP error, or cannot yet find the signature. The transaction may still be in flight.
• Confirmed execution failure: the transaction has a slot and a non-null error, with logs explaining the instruction failure. Retrying may charge another fee and may repeat earlier instructions if the application is not idempotent.
• Confirmed success: the transaction has the required commitment and no execution error. Verify the expected account-state change rather than relying on a wallet toast.

Before retrying a state-changing action, check whether the original signature eventually reached the required commitment and whether the intended state change already occurred.

6. Fix “blockhash not found” and expired transactions

Normal Solana transactions include a recent blockhash. Validators accept a limited recent-hash window with a maximum processing age of 151 hashes. Production guidance describes typical validity as about 150 blocks, roughly 60–90 seconds, although the exact duration varies with block production.

A blockhash error can arise because the hash really expired, because the simulation or confirmation node is behind, or because different commitment levels were used. Check validity and block height when diagnosing:

1. Fetch a fresh blockhash and its last valid block height from a healthy endpoint.
2. Build the transaction with that blockhash, sign it, and simulate it using the same commitment.
3. Send it with matching preflightCommitment and the same healthy endpoint when possible.
4. Confirm it before the last valid block height. If the hash is expired, discard the signed bytes, rebuild the transaction, and obtain new signatures.

Do not keep resending a stale signed transaction. A new blockhash requires a new signature, so a rebuilt transaction has a different signature.

7. Use commitment levels precisely

Choose the level based on the consequence of the action. A fast interface update may display processed status, while a withdrawal, accounting entry, or support decision should wait for confirmed or finalized status. Never tell a user that funds moved without stating which commitment was observed and checking the resulting account state.

8. Diagnose a lagging or unreliable RPC node

RPC health is more than a fast HTTP response. Measure median and tail latency, error and timeout rates, returned-slot freshness, time to observe signature status, and WebSocket recovery. A node that responds quickly but trails the cluster can provide an old blockhash or fail to see a recently submitted signature.

Production safeguards

• Set finite request timeouts so a stuck connection cannot block the transaction queue.
• Use bounded retries with exponential backoff and jitter; avoid synchronized retry storms.
• Operate or select a separately managed fallback endpoint rather than sending all traffic through one failure domain.
• Health-check both availability and slot freshness before routing writes.
• Keep blockhash retrieval, simulation, sending, and confirmation on the same healthy endpoint when practical, or compare slots and commitments when switching.
• Reconnect WebSocket subscriptions after disconnects and reconcile missed signatures through polling.

For a one-off wallet transaction, switching to another trusted RPC and reducing polling is usually safer than rapidly clicking Send again. For an application, record endpoint, cluster, blockhash, last valid block height, signature, commitment, HTTP status, and RPC latency in logs.

9. A safe end-to-end transaction procedure

1. Select the cluster: verify the wallet and RPC URL are both mainnet, devnet, or testnet as intended.
2. Check service health: review the status page and query the current slot from the endpoint.
3. Fetch a blockhash: request it with the commitment your application will use for simulation and confirmation.
4. Build and sign: construct the instructions, include the fee payer, and sign with every required signer.
5. Simulate: leave preflight enabled and inspect returned errors and logs. Fix the transaction if simulation fails.
6. Send once: submit the signed transaction and save the returned signature immediately.
7. Observe status: poll getSignatureStatuses or use a WebSocket subscription, with a bounded timeout.
8. Inspect metadata: call getTransaction after the desired commitment and verify the error field and account-state changes.
9. Handle expiry: if the last valid block height passes without confirmation, fetch a new blockhash, rebuild, re-sign, and submit a new transaction.

This sequence separates invalid instructions, endpoint problems, and blockhash expiry while preserving enough evidence to explain what happened.

10. Retry decisions without creating duplicates

For payments, swaps, and other state-changing actions, use an application-level idempotency key or a durable record tied to the original signature. The chain does not automatically know that two separately signed transactions represent the same business action.

11. Troubleshooting by symptom

“My wallet says pending”

Copy the signature, verify the cluster, and query signature status at the wallet’s commitment level. If the signature is absent, test the wallet’s RPC and a second endpoint. If it has a slot and error, treat it as an execution failure rather than a pending transfer.

“The signature was returned, but nothing arrived”

A returned signature is only RPC acceptance. Query status, then fetch transaction metadata and inspect the recipient account on the same cluster. Do not rely on the sender’s interface notification.

“Blockhash not found”

Compare the commitment used to fetch the blockhash with preflightCommitment, check whether the hash is valid, and compare endpoint slots. Fetch a new hash and rebuild after expiry.

“Transaction simulation failed”

Read the simulation error and logs. Check account addresses and ownership, signer and writable flags, token or native balance, instruction data, and program-specific prerequisites. Keep preflight enabled until the cause is corrected.

“The RPC is returning 429 or timing out”

Stop aggressive polling, apply bounded backoff with jitter, and test endpoint availability and slot freshness from another route. A successful retry does not establish whether the first request reached the cluster, so check the original signature before sending a new transaction.

12. What to record for support or accounting

• Cluster name and exact RPC endpoint.
• Transaction signature, blockhash, and last valid block height.
• Time zone and timestamps for submission, first status observation, and confirmation.
• Commitment level used for blockhash retrieval, simulation, sending, and confirmation.
• HTTP status codes, timeout details, returned slot, and endpoint region.
• getSignatureStatuses response and getTransaction error, logs, slot, and balance changes.
• Status-page incident identifier and affected component, if one was active.

These records let you distinguish a cluster incident from an RPC routing problem and an invalid instruction without guessing or charging a customer twice.
